NEW RELEASE BY Z.E.R.O.

The Z.E.R.O. ensemble, or the Zappa Early Renaissance Orchestra, is preparing a new album. It might even be a Christmas album. And it will be released by Cordelia Records.

Next to the core members (Kevin Crosby, Rupert Kettle) and the familiar faces (Prarie Prince, Juliana Brandon, Jimmy Thomas,...), the album also features Ike Willis, Craig Twister Steward, Joe Trump (of the Kiki band !!), Fred Händl, Niklas Lychou and Magnus Liljqvist (of MagniFZnt), Herman Schindler and narrator extraordinaire Andrew Greenaway.

Next to the set of rearranged Zappa tunes, there's also a composition from Danny Elfman to be found on the album : 'The Oogie Boogie Song'.

Something to look out for.

THE YELLOW SNOW CRYSTALS - LIVE

German ensemble The Yellow Snow Crystals plays the music of Frank Zappa, with lyrics translated into German.
Actually, they use Zappa's songs as a vehicle to tell and to sing funny stories, and to improvise. They're hilarious.

The Yellow Snow Crystals got founded by Paul Hubweber in 2011.
With Paul on the trombone, Alexander Morsey on the double bass (and sousaphone), Martin Verborg on the violin and saxophone, Simon Camatta on drums and the engaging Gerhard Horriar on  lead vocals, they're not your average rocking teenage combo.
This is jazz. This is not just a band playing the music of Frank Zappa. And it's great fun to hear and to see.

I've seen the band on a couple of occasions (Mosae & twice at Zappanale) and I'm glad to tell you that the joy that the band showcases in concert has been translated on this live album.
"Live" collects the Yellow Snow Crystels in concert at various times and at various occasions. An excellent collection.
The 2 CD set is accompanied by an informative booklet (lyrics and pictures) and is housed in a beautiful package. Artwork by Alfred Reuters.
Even if wouldn't understand German, this album is worth your while.

Check it out here:

Z.E.R.O. PLAYS ZAPPA

FRANK ZAPPA & EDDIE JOBSON 1976

24th October 1976 - Boston Music Hall, Boston, Massachusetts

THE CROSSWALKERS - GOT TO GET BACK THE BEATLES

About a month ago, Chato Segerer performed at Zappanale with his Chato! band. He performed a very impressive set of original material (plus a Zappa and a Cardiacs tune) and he showcased his amazing talent on the guitar.

The Crosswalkers are a German quartet (guitar, organ, drums, bass) that performs the music of The Beatles. Next to Simon Oslender (organ), Benjamin Keil (drums) and Benjamin Gutzeit (bass), it features Chato Segerer on the guitar. No prog rock or zappa-esque madness here, but excellent instrumental renditions and interpretations of Beatles classics.
The ensemble just released their second album.

Do I like it? I love it !!
All four of these musicians do a fabulous job, but Chato's phrasing is outstanding. He makes his guitar sing.

Got To Get You Into My Life, Get Back, Lady Madonna, Let It Be, I Feel Fine, All You Need Is Love, Can't Buy Me Love, She's Leaving Home, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Yesterday, In My Life, Paperback Writer.

Recommended !!

From their first album:

ORCHESTRE TOUT PUISSANT MARCEL DUCHAMP - S/T

The Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp was created by Vincent Bertholet after a one-night-stand / concert at 'Cave12' in Genève, Switzerland in 2006. After some changes in the line-up, OTPMD consisted of Vincent Bertholet, Liz Moscarola and Anne Cardinaud.
It's this trio plus Guillaume Fernez, Julien Israelien and Seni who recorded the first album in 2007, a private release with a nice reference to Marcel Duchamp's "Fountain" on the cover.

Sounds great.
And is fun.

FRANK ZAPPA - OVER-NITE SENSATION

  • frank zappa and the mothers of invention - one size fits all
        (2011, book, usa, hal leonard)

Guitar freaks have been spoiled the last couple of years.
Three complete Zappa albums have been transcribed for guitar : "One Size Fits All", Hot Rats", and "Over-Nite Sensation". They've been published by Hal Leonard.
More recently Hal Leonard has also re-issued "The Frank Zappa Songbook Vol.1" and "The Frank Zappa Guitar Book".

DIETER JAKOB - ZAPPANALE #27

  • zappanale #27 - impressionen
    by dieter jakob
        (2017, book, germany, private release)

Dieter Jakob has selected his best photos of last year's Zappanale and collected them in a hardbound book. Almost 100 pages of beautiful pictures of the bands and of the audience.

ORCHESTRE TOUT PUISSANT MARCEL DUCHAMP - THE THING THAT EVERYTHING ELSE IS ABOUT

L'Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp released their second album in 2010. It was their first release on the Red Wig label.
On "The Thing That Everything Else Is About", the OTPMD sextet presents their unmistakable exotic postpunk. It is no wonder that they have taken Marcel Duchamp as an inspiration.

Makes me happy.

DOCUMENTARY - FRANK ZAPPA, EAT THAT QUESTION

The German release of the "Frank Zappa - Eat That Question" documentary by Thorsten Schütte includes over 40 minutes of bonus material.
(extra) Interviews with Tommy Mars, Arthur Barrow, Bruce Fowler, Tom Fowler, Ed Mann, Kurt McGettrick, Chad Wackerman and Robert Martin.

MARCO MINNEMANN - BORREGO

Marco Minnemann's latest release "Borrego" features Joe Satriani and Tony Levin as special guests.
Nice album.
Music for on the road.
Or not.

BOB ZAPPA - FRANKIE & BOBBY, THE REST OF OUR STORY

  • frankie & bobby, the rest of our story
    by bob zappa
        (2017, book, uk, amazon)

"Frankie & Bobby, The Rest Of Our Story" is the sequel to Bob's book from two years ago : "Frankie & Bobby, Growing Up Zappa".

In "The Rest Of Our Story", Frank's younger brother talks about his personal life and his interactions with his brother. There's also chapters on Gail and the Zappa Family Trust, on his recent meetings with Moon and with Dweezil, and on the Zappanale festival (where the picture for the book cover was taken).
Enjoyable reading.
Emotional and frustrating at times, this must not have been an easy book to write.

Highly recommended !!

from http://www.writeamusicreview.com/2017/06/music-legend-frank-zappas-brother-bob.html

Says Co de Kloet, well-known radio personality and music producer in Amsterdam, “By sharing personal, sometimes extremely personal stories about his relationship with Frank, Bob gives us a clear view of that 'regular-guyness' quality, leaving the importance and impact of his brother intact. By not just focusing on Frank and giving us information about other relations and some of his own experiences, he puts Frank in a new and sincere perspective. I had a great time reading it and I hope it will do well. Over the years I had a friendship with Herbie Cohen, Frank's manager and business partner. He was at my farmhouse a few times and once when he was reading something in a book about Zappa, he smiled and said, 'It is always fun to read what people THINK really happened (in Frank's life) but they haven't got a clue.' Bob Zappa has! And that is what makes this book a must have.”

The book is also one of rejection, reconciliation and closure... As James Cohen: Zappanale Master of Ceremonies explains, “A memoir is more than recollection, it exposes a continuum of related events: Bob Zappa's 'Frankie & Bobby - The Rest of Our Story' is wisdom gained over time. Picking up where his first book left off, it focuses on Bob's adventures in the US and elsewhere - a Swedish university course in Deviant Behavior or a close brush with Soviet espionage. Bob's ultimate purpose of understanding how his alienation from his brother Frank's world developed, or was created, overshadows these episodes. Climaxing with a series of rejections relating to the passing of their mother Rose Marie and finally of Frank himself, Bob celebrates his subsequent reconciliation with Dweezil and Moon and a new life rooted deep in his past…A great read, and for the Zappa faithful, optimistic closure.”

PHISH - 06.22.12 RIVERBEND MUSIC CENTER, CINCINATTI, OH

Live Phish Downloads produces CDRs with Phish concert recordings.
Looks neat. Sounds pretty good as well.

June 22, 2012, Phish performed FZ's 'Peaches En Regalia' as the second song of their first set.
This concert is available through LivePhishDownloads.

Another fine addition to The Others Of Invention.

ORCHESTRE TOUT PUISSANT MARCEL DUCHAMP - ROTOROTOR

If you saw or heard the band in concert at Zappanale and you liked it, this is the album that you need.

"Rotorotor" is the band's third album and latest to date. It presents 10 tracks. 10 adventurous pop songs that float on African rhythms and repetitive percussion.
Produced by John Parish (PJ Harvey !)

Here's a sample.

BOB ZAPPA - FRANKIE & BOBBY, GROWING UP ZAPPA

  • frankie & bobby, growing up zappa
    by bob zappa
        (2015, book, usa, crz publishing)
Actually, I wanted to mention the sequel to "Growing Up Zappa", called "The Rest Of Our Story", but then I decided that "Growing Up Zappa" could use some extra attention.

Bob Zappa is Frank's three year younger brother.
In "Frankie & Bobby: Growing Up Zappa" he talks about their childhood and about events that were important or even decisive for the both of them.
Just until the 1967 "Absolutely Freee" shows in NYC.

I was a bit afraid that the book would be a bit opportunistic of maybe even voyeuristic, but that's not the case. The book is fun to read and very informative at the same time.

Highly recommended !

Amazon adds:
Written by Frank Zappa’s younger brother, Bobby, this new “coming of age” memoir provides readers with never before told stories about events that helped shape Frank’s political, social, intellectual and creative development. The book begins with the brother’s time in Maryland from the late 1940’s until the summer of 1967 in New York City before Frank and the Mothers went on their first of many European tours. This fascinating account describes how the two brothers lived through, and handled, a series of events ranging from amusing to life threatening. It is a must-read for anybody interested in Frank’s amazing life that only his closest confidant and brother, Bobby, can tell.

ZAPPANALE 2017 - PART 04 - ORCHESTRE TOUT PUISSANT MARCEL DUCHAMP

Swiss band L'Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp performed at the latest edition of the Zappanale festival on Sunday, July 16, 2017.

Despite the weather conditions, OTPMD showed where the 'orchestre tour puissant' in their name comes from : African rhythms, repetitive marimba lines, chants and trance.
Combined with the fragile voice of the lead singer, it resulted in a laid back feeling that everybody enjoyed. No wonder that it stopped raining.

Perfect for a festival. Especially on a Sunday afternoon.
Too bad that didn't add a Zappa tune to their repertoire. Could have been nice.

For the occasion, the ensemble performed as OTPMD XXL with extra violins and a cello.
I didn't count them, but I guess they had ten or even twelve people on the stage.

Here's a snippet :

The concert got recorded by the Arf Society, was put on DVDR and made available in very limited quantity during the festival.

FLAT EARTH SOCIETY

I took this picture a couple of months ago.
As you can see, the numberplate on this car says "FES". Indisputable.
And we all know that FES stands for Flat Earth Society.

Is this an attempt by Flat Earth Society to go for some subliminal advertising ?

My sources tell me that there are 1000 similar number plates driving around in Belgium.

Flat Earth Society's teaser for their 2013 "13" album.

MANZAP

A couple of days ago, ManZap (= Stanley Zappa, sax and Andrew Wedman, Rhodes) performed at UFDA, the second edition of the annual untempered festival of dissonant arts, in Naramata BC.

CRYPTIC ARCHIVES AUCTION

CRYPTIC ARCHIVES AUCTION
THE VAULT IS OPEN!

Sort of... The Residents and The Cryptic Corporation are proud to announce the FIRST EVER sale of items hand picked from their OFFICIAL ARCHIVE! The recent retirement of longtime Cryptic associate Hardy Fox stimulated the relocation of this extensive collection from an armored depository on Mr. Fox's estate to the less spacious storage facility at the Cryptic World Headquarters. Consequently, WE NEED TO CLEAR OUT SOME SPACE! And would love to do so by sharing these cherished items with Residents fans.

An auction of the first 31 items will be starting on Friday, August 18 with an initial posting on eBay. Additional pieces will be going up for one month until a total of 31 items have been auctioned off. Each item will come with an Official Archive Certificate of Authenticity.

GABBA ZAPPA HEY! - HEY PUNK

Gabba Zappa Hey! is a London-based trio. A punk band to be more exact.

This "Hey Punk" release presents 12 short and powerful tracks, all about two and a half minutes long.
Raw and unbridled.
Intertwined with guitar riffs from various punk classics (The Ramones, The Clash,...).

I started my day with this album and I have to say that I love it.
It put a big smile on my face.
Love the artwork too. Superb.

Now this is what I want to see at any Zappa festival !!

Here's a clip from a recent concert !

For those of you who can handle torrents, the recordings that are on this album have been seeded on Zappateers.

COSMIC MYTH RECORDS

Earlier this year, Irwin Chusid and Michael D. Anderson started adding the music of Sun Ra to Bandcamp. They're doing this in agreement with the heirs and rightholders of Sun Ra's music.

https://sunramusic.bandcamp.com/

This will also be the place where one can buy CD and vinyl editions of (some of) these digital albums. For this purpose, the Cosmic Myth Records label has been created.

Recently, the stereo / remastered version of "The Magic City" has been made available on CD and on vinyl.

And more recently, "My Brother The Wind" (expanded and remastered) got materialised on CD and vinyl as well.

Irwin Chusid adds:
"God Is More Than Love Can Ever Be" is one of my personal favorites — an amazing power trio (Sun Ra, acoustic piano; Hayes Burnett, bass; Samarai Celestial, drums — his first recording session with Ra).
By coincidence, this week Ben Young, Joe Lizzi and I completed a new restoration/remaster of this album, which will be the third or fourth LP/CD issue on our new Cosmic Myth Records label. The other album in the CMR pipeline is the solo piano set "Monorails and Satellites Vols. 1, 2, and 3". (Yes, there is an unreleased volume 3.) We expect to have special guest liner note writers for each new release. Christopher Trent (and Ben Young) contributed notes for Magic City, and Moog historian Brian Kehew (and Ben Young) did notes for MBTW. Edley ODowd is designing these stellar-looking packages.'

MORE PIERRE VERVLOESEM ON BANDCAMP

I assume that you all know that a remastered and augmented (= with bonus tracks) version of the complete Pierre Vervloesem discography can be found on iTunes?
If not, go to iTunes and get it right away.

In the meantime, former Carbon 7 record label chief Guy Segers has been posting a lot of material on his Bandcamp page, including some nice tracks by Pierre Vervloesem. Not a surprise as Pierre released his first albums on the Carbon 7 label (and Guy played bass on all of these tracks).
I'll try to walk you through them.

Amazing Grease (Pierre Vervloesem), a track from the "Grosso Modo" album.
Guitar instrumental. Mixing different styles into one powerful composition.

Anti Caking Agent (Pierre Vervloesem), or postassium ferrocyanide as we say in the trade, a track from the "Grosso Modo" album.
Starts as an up-tempo track and morphs into a contemporary classical piece, and back. Has Peter Vandenberghe on the keyboards.

Bon Courage (Pierre Vervloesem), from the album "Home Made".
Guitar instrumental with a shifting melody line. Has a nice intersection with two basses.

Country Of Certitudes (Pierre Vervloesem), a previously unreleased track from the "Grosso Modo" sessions.
Beautiful and energetic !

First Time Machine (Pierre Vervloesem), a previously unreleased track from the "Grosso Modo" sessions.
Another beautiful gutiar instrumental. Bass-driven.

Full Metal Carpet (Pierre Vervloesem), from the album "Grosso Modo".
Has Pierre's signature all over it. Superb track. With Peter Vermeersch on clarinets.

Hairdressers Go Home (Pierre Vervloesem), from the album "Grosso Modo".
Another great track. Chaos and energy turned into music. Have to play the Grosso Modo album today.

Are You Out Of My Mind (Guy Segers). Written by Guy Segers, arrangement and computer sounds by Pierre Vervloesem.

PIERRE VERVLOESEM - SERVING SUGGESTION

Guy Segers just released Serving Suggestion by Pierre Vervloesem through his bandcamp page.

SERVING SUGGESTION – 3’52“
Composition (01/01/2002) : Pierre VERVLOESEM

Bonus track from the album "Grosso modo" by Pierre Vervloesem (Carbon 7)

credits
released January 1, 2002
- Pierre Vervloesem (Guitar)
- Peter Vandenberghe (Keyboards)
- Guy Segers (Bass)
- Charles Hayward (Drums)

As far as I know, the track is previously unreleased.
There's some weird noises in the background, but I like this track.
Perfect for a soundtrack or a road trip.

GEORGE CLINTON AND PARLIAMENT FUNKADELIC

I have been / am still listening to an audience recording of George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic concert this morning.
A show they did in Glasgow, Scotland, last May.

The concert opened with 'Super Stupid', 'Cosmic Slop' and about two minutes of Frank Zappa's 'I'm The Slime' before George Clinton entered the stage to continue the show with 'Atomic Dog'.
Nice.

The recording is available at DimeADozen.

THE HERMETO PASCOAL DISCOGRAPHY

I like data.
So I started with the Hermeto Pascoal discography over at the United Mutations Archives.

If you think that I'm missing certain album titles, or if you have jpg's of album covers that I haven't depicted, let me know.

http://www.united-mutations.com/p/hermeto_pascoal.htm

HERMETO PASCOAL - NO MUNDO DOS SONS

  • hermeto pascoal & grupo: no mundo dos sons
        (2017, 2cd, brazil, ??)
Let's be honest. Hermeto Pascoal is quite a name in the avant garde / jazz world. He released over 20 albums and his eclectic approach might appeal to people who, let's say, like the music of Frank Zappa.
I'm not always convinced, but his latest album, "No Mundo Dos Sons", is spot on.
This is one excellent album.

... You’re not going to want to forget Mother’s Day 2018, either. For that date, May 13, is the publication date for a very special project about some other Mothers that’s been way more than ten years in the making.
It is, quite simply, the Mother of All Books About its subject, which also explains why it’s taken so long.

A PHISH UPDATE

Jamband Phish makes every concert that they play available. As a download, but most of them also on CD. They've been doing it for a  couple of years now;
I have a couple of these shows. Yes, the ones where they play 'Peaches En Regalia', the Frank Zappa composition.
I mentioned some recent ones a couple of weeks ago.

I should check the Live Phish website again one of these days, 'cause I'm pretty sure that more shows that feature 'Peaches' have been released...

In the meantime, my friend Danny sent me an update for the Phish discography. Counting the Live Phish concert album that the band has released the last year, they have released 385 albums to date !!
Three hundred and eighty-five albums.
I updated the Phish entry at United Mutations with the studio albums.
Album titles only. 18 to date.

Here's Phish performing 'Purple Rain' with a vacuum cleaner (!!) solo...

MILOSZ PEKALA AND MAGDALENA KORDYLASINSKA

In 2016, Polish duo Miłosz Pękala and Magdalena Kordylasińska released an album on the Polish Lado ABC record label that included their recording of Frank Zappa's 'The Black Page #1'.

The album got re-released as an LP (also with the Zappa piece) on the German Gagarin record label earlier this year. For the occasion, the original title got translated into German : "Werke Für Schlagzeug Und Elektroakustische Geräte", which in English would say something like : "Pieces for Drums and Electro-Acoustic Equipment".

THE RUDY SCHWARTZ PROJECT - DELICIOUS ASS FRENZY

Last month, Joe Newman remastered two of his albums and made them available through Kunaki.

The first one was "Delicious Ass Frenzy", an album that he originally released in 2010.
The album kicks of with a sea shantee in some sort of ancient and long forgotten language, mixing in another couple of almost familiar sounding melody lines. Next up is 'Trailer Queen', The Rudy Schwartz Project's take on Queen's collaboration 'Killer Queen'. Hilarious. And it just doesn't stop.
My favourite track is 'Invasion Of The Chrome Fish People'. It starts as synclavier piece and continues as a guitar solo. A respectful tribute, if I may say so.

Highly recommended.

SUM OF R - ORGA

  • sum of r: orga
(2017, cd, switzerland, czar of revelations)
Swiss duo Sum Of R are Reto Mäder (guitar, bass guitar, effects, organ, drums, electronics, synthesizer) and Fabio Costa (drums, effects, synthesizer). They released their first album in 2008. It was followed by the "Ride Out The Waves" EP in 2012 and by another full album, "Lights On Water", in 2013.

Sum Of R is typified by their instrumental and dark soundtrack-like compositions.

Their brand-new release is entitled "Orga" as in 'organic' or as in 'organism'. The 11 tracks on "Orga" are dim and gloomy. Hypnotic.
The band adds : ...the listener will enter into a self-contained dimension that speaks its own language: a wordless, organic language made of pieces of an orchestral wall of sound, raw-boned melodies and repetitive mantras, where spirit, body and instruments become one.

Fascinating.
The album comes in beautiful artwork. It fits the total package.

Out on Czar Of Revelations.

As an appetizer, here's their previous album :

MOSAE ZAPPA 045 PRESENTS MÖRGLBL AND APE SHIFTER

Mosae Zappa is the name of a festival that takes place in and around Heerlen, NL.

The first edition counted two evenings and took place in 2011. It featured Lilo, The Wrong Object, The Yellow Snow Crystals, The Beefheart Project and Tarentatec.

The second edition happened in June 2012. Ensemble Mosae, The Muze Jazz Orchestra, The Lex Bronkowitz Orchestra, Grupo Go, and Peach Noise all made an appearance.

After a bit of an hiatus, the festival returned in 2016 (with an extended crew) as Mosae Zappa 045 : one evening (plus some afternoon activities) with John's Got A Sausage, Bits From Hell, The Wrong Object, and The Foolz.

In the meantime, the team behind Mosae Zappa 045 decided that they should do more than organize a festival. Mosae Zappa 045 has the intention to promote music by organizing concerts.
Fortunately, they plug the music that I like.

September 21, Mosae Zappa 04, in collaboration with concert venue De Nieuwe Nor, will present Mörglbl and Ape Shifter.
For French guitar wizard Christophe Godin and his Mörglbl project, this will be the first date of their 3 or 4 day tour in The Netherlands. I've seen the band in concert two times and they're not to be missed.
German band Ape Shifter doesn't ring any bells with me. The clip sounds promising. They have one album out. Released last March.

STING - LIVE VOL.1

I guess that most of you know that I'm always on the lookout for recordings of artists that perform the music of Frank Zappa. One of these recent detours brought me (back) to Sting.
Every Zappa fan knows that Mr.Sting performed with Frank Zappa on stage during the 1988 tour in Chicago. On March the 3rd to be more precise. They did 'Murder By Numbers'.

Shortly thereafter, Sting asked Frank for the music of 'The Idiot Bastard Son'...

The above pictured "Live Vol.1" bootleg CD captured Sting in concert. It includes Sting performing 'The Idiot Bastard Son'.
Beautiful.
