FIELD RECORDING OF A FRYING EGG ON BBC3

Actually, March 2, BBC3 will be broadcasting some Zappa music. But the same program will also include a field recording of a frying egg.

Fiona Talkington - "Late Junction"

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00r2kz8

Fiona Talkington presents a late night feast of breakfasting music, from the pancakes of Frank Zappa, to Christian Lindberg's salute to sausages, and Lee Patterson's second and last field recording of a frying egg. Also features tracks from the new album by English folk duo Cath and Phil Tyler.

Sounds delicious :-)

A DRUM CHANNEL NEWSFLASH

Thursday, February 25th - DC Live - 6:00PM (PST)

Mike Portnoy

In a surprise visit, Mike will be hanging with Terry Bozzio this Thursday on DC Live.
Mike has won "Best Progressive Rock Drummer" in Modern Drummer 12 years consecutively, winning 20 awards overall. These two Hall of Famers will be jamming and answering your questions.

------------------------------------------------
http://www.drumchannel.com

Join DC LIVE here on Thursday, February 25th, at 6pm PST, with Mike Portnoy and host Terry Bozzio.

A performance not to be missed! Mike Portnoy is the acclaimed drummer of Dream Theater as well as various side-projects such as Liquid Tension Experiment, TransAtlantic, O.S.I. and tribute bands such as Yellow Matter Custard, Hammer Of The Gods, Amazing Journey and Cygnus and The Sea Monsters.

Mike was born and raised in Long Beach, New York, where his interest in music started at an early age. "My father was a rock n' roll disc jockey, so I was always surrounded by music constantly. I had this huge record collection when I was real young and loved The Beattles and then later on KISS. It was inevitable that I'd become a musician." Although Mike taught himself how to play the drums, he did take music theory classes in high school. During that time he began playing in local bands Intruder, Rising Power and Inner Sanctum, the latter which released their own album. Mike left the band after being awarded a scholarship to attend Berklee Music College in Boston.

Mike says his biggest influences are Rush drummer Neil Peart and the late Frank Zappa. Other favorites include drummers Terry Bozzio, Vinnie Colaiuta, Simon Philips, John Bonham and Keith Moon and bands such as The Beatles, Queen, Yes, Metallica, Jellyfish, Iron Maiden, U2 and Jane's Addiction. He is also a fan of rap music.

Mike's long list of Awards include 24 Modern Drummer Magazine Reader's Poll Awards including: 2004 Hall of Fame Inductee, Best Progressive Rock Drummer (12 years in a row!!), Best Clinican (twice), Best Educational Video/DVD for Liquid Drum Theater, and Best Recorded Performance of the Year (6 times) for Dream Theater's Awake, A Change of Seasons, Fallin into Infinity, Scenes From A Memory, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence and Score.

LAST SHOP STANDING

Last Shop Standing: Whatever Happened to Record Shops?
by Graham Jones
Sure looks interesting. Here's what the press release says:

Last Shop Standing lifts the lid on an area of the music industry in tatters – a sad but true tale of the decline of record shops and their beloved vinyl too. The author, Graham Jones has worked at the heart of the record industry since the golden 1980s. He was there during the fruitful retail years and has witnessed the tragic decline of a business blighted by corruption and corporate greed.

Undertaking a final tour of the last remaining independent record shops in Britain, Graham has collected a wealth of entertaining stories that explain why the best are still standing, and how the worst of them blew it.

The book includes revealing anecdotes about rock stars and industry figures including The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, , David Bowie, Joy Division, Oasis, The Sex Pistols and John Peel.

Last Shop Standing is a hilarious, addictive, yet sometimes harrowing account written by a man who has been there and sold that. It is a book that will bring a wry smile to the face of anyone who has ever bought a music CD or attended a concert, and still has the promotional T Shirt of a favourite band to prove it.

Since getting a break into the music industry following a colleague’s failed, comical suicide attempt, Graham Jones has amassed an excellent collection of anecdotes on his travels around the record shops of Britain – all included in Last Shop Standing:

¨ The hilarity of the UK’s worst record shop
¨ The most dysfunctional family in pop music
¨ How Take That were conned out of the Christmas number 1
¨ Why Mr Blobby has a special place in the heart of record shop owners
¨ The hysterical tale of the band that faked a murder
¨ The most hyped records ever and how they cheated their way into the charts
¨ The rock star who’s hobby is touring the UK record shops being horrible to staff
¨ The shop that sold £45,000 worth of records for a fiver

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART - YELLOW BRICK ROAD BUDDHA 7"

Thanks to Håkon Busterud, I was able to add a picture of the B-side of the 'Yellow Brick Road' 7".

TONY PALMER'S FILM OF FRANK ZAPPA'S 200 MOTELS

I know, I know, I already told you that Tony Palmer's film of FZ's 200 Motels is excellent, but I watched some more bits today, so I just wanted to repeat myself.

The official message goes like this:
"Available for the first time on DVD, Frank Zappa's 200 Motels is a cult classic. The story, scattered with performances by the Mothers of Invention and the Royal Symphony Orchestra, is a plotless tale of life on the road for touring musicians. Originally shot on video and restored here, 200 Motels is a surrealistic nonstop visual extravaganza starring Frank Zappa and the Mothers, Ringo Starr and Who drummer Keith Moon. Includes bonus commentary from director and script writer Tony Palmer." NTSC, All Region format; aspect ratio: 16:9; 98 minutes.
I also added the title to the various contributors' discographies.

PROJECT / OBJECT TO TOUR EUROPE?

Project/Object, featuring Ike Willis and Ray White, is considering a European tour in May 2010.

HAMILTON STERLING & JIMMY HASLIP - MIGRATION

Here's part of the press release for the new Hamilton Sterling & Jimmy Haslip album, "Migration":

MIGRATION is a modern programmatic composition in six movements. A world-ranging, dark-ambient journey from the rural to the urban and beyond. It was conceived as a journey in sound.

MIGRATION was produced, composed, arranged, performed, and programmed by Hamilton Sterling and Jimmy Haslip.

Hamilton Sterling is a Sound Designer, Composer, Editor and Musician who has worked on such films as The Dark Knight, War of the Worlds, and Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. The Dark Knight and Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World won the Academy Award for best sound editing. War of the Worlds was nominated for best sound editing.
Jimmy Haslip is a Producer, Composer, Musician and founding member of the jazz fusion group, Yellowjackets. He also plays in the Allan Holdsworth/Alan Pasqua group, The Jeff Lorber Fusion, and Jing Chi. He has won two Grammy Awards and been nominated for seventeen.

From Symbolic Sound – excerpt: “In Migration, Hamilton Sterling and Jimmy Haslip take us on a journey that begins in Senegal and ends up on another planet. Using Kyma timbre-scapes and live performances on bass and percussion, Haslip and Sterling create an immersive soundtrack tracing humankind's restless and inevitable journey out of Africa and outward to the stars. The best listening is in surround-sound with the lights dimmed: Side 1 (white band) of the DVD is a 5.1 Dolby Digital version and a 2 channel PCM 24-bit 48 kHz version. Side 2 (red band) is a 5.1 24 bit 48 kHz DVD-Audio 5.1 version; this is definitely a 'hi fi', 'audiophile' type experience. It's a soundtrack that creates its own visuals inside your head … with evocative cinematic ambiences, accessible ostinati punctuated with alien outbursts, and 'outside' improvisations. The result feels both genuine and delightfully idiosyncratic.”

Listen to a preview and order your own copy from Helikon Sound , CDBaby, or Amazon.

Thank you.

Best regards,

Hamilton Sterling & Jimmy Haslip

MACHACEK, SIPE & GARRISON - IMPROVISION

The last couple of days, I have been mentioning Alex Machacek on a regular basis. Ales was / is part of Eddie Jobson's UKZ project, and he also released a fine album entitled "The Official Triangle Sessions" a little while ago.
A couple of years earlier, Alex Machacek recorded with Terry Bozzio (and also with Patrick O'Hearn).
Reason enough to investigate...

"Improvision" finds Alex Machacek on guitar, Jeff Sipe on drums, and Matthew Garrison on bass.
I already knew that Alex Machacek's guitar playing is not from this world, but if you add Jeff Sipe's crispy drumming, and Matthew Garrison's energetic jazz bass, you get some of the finest and powerfull fusion that you'll have heard in a while.

UKZ - RADIATION

Late 2008, Eddie Jobson started UKZ. The band released a CDEP in (early) 2009 and did some concerts in Japan in June of the same year.

A little later, August 2009, Eddie Jobson started a new band called "The Ultimate Zero Project". The band toured the U.S.West Coast and recently did some gigs in Poland and in Russia.
During one of the Russian concerts, UZ was joined on stage by Adrian Belew for a couple of King Crimson tunes.

On his website, however, Eddie Jobson states that UKZ is still alive. UKZ will be touring and will be recording an album.
And that's exellent news.
"Radiation", the CDEP that got released about a year ago, is a very impressive dittie. It lasts about 20 minutes, and it left me wanting more.
UKZ features Eddie Jobson, Aaron Lippert, Trey Gunn, Alex Machacek and Marco Minneman. How's that for a line-up?
Superb musicians and great music. All four tracks written by UKZ.

Progressive rock is more alive then ever...

THE BONEDADDYS RECORDED A BEEFHEART TUNE

a message from Jeff Berkow:

I’m primarily a Zappa/MOI fan; like Beefheart as well. I didn’t notice among your covers of Beefheart tunes, “Crazy Little Thing” as performed by The Bonedaddys. Recorded live in the early ‘90s on a disc entitled “To Jam is Human, to Gig Divine.” Its actually a terrific CD by a little-known California club band.

TONY PALMER'S FILM OF FRANK ZAPPA'S 200 MOTELS

  • tony palmer's film of frank zappa's 200 motels
(2010, dvd, uk, tony palmer tpdvd127)

Yes!! Finally, here it is: "200 Motels" in all its glory.

We've all seen this movie as it got released on VHS video years and years ago.
And now, here's the high quality DVD version.

"200 Motels" got shot in 1971 and featured Zappa and The Mothers Of Invention plus Ringo Starr and Keith Moon, to drop just two names. Now that I think of it, Zappa always had this thing for drummers...

Anyway, "200 Motels" is a milestone in Zappa's career. I'm not too big a fan of the vaudeville aspect and the on-the-road stories, as you cannot keep on laughing with it, but the music is fabulous. It's Zappa at his best.

This DVD offers two versions of the movie: one with the standard soundtrack, and one that has a Tony Palmer interview and comments on top of it.
Excellent stuff.

ESSENTIAL !

Use your time at DWEEZILLA to get advice from the masters, perfect your sound, learn about life on the road, master improvisation, and much more!

"I decided to create a diverse music boot camp for people of all skill levels hoping to increase their musical prowess. It would make me very happy if I could help a fellow musician take their skills to the next level." - Dweezil Zappa
