NEW CAPTAIN BEEFHEART DVD ANNOUNCED

Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band - The Lost Broadcasts (DVD)

http://www.gonzomultimedia.co.uk/product_details/15486

On the 12th April, in the middle of the European leg of the tour Captain Beefheart and The Magic Band stopped off at the Beat Club studios in Bremen to film a session for later transmission. Of the four song session filmed that day only one track has ever been broadcast. The band at that time included: Captain Beefheart (Don Van Vliet), vocals, harp. Rockette Morton (Mark Boston), guitar/bass. Zoot Horn Rollo (Bill Harkleroad), guitar. Orejon (Roy Estrada), bass. Ed Marimba (Art Tripp), drums. Winged Eel Fingerling (Elliot Ingber), guitar. Jon Kirkman describes the recordings: “The session kicks off with a bass solo entitled ‘Mascara Snake’. This short piece was named after a former member of the Magic Band Victor Hayden, who had appeared on the Trout Mask Replica album. The solo is played by Mark Boston although at this point former Mothers of Invention bassist Roy Estrada had joined The Magic Band following his departure from Little Feat in early 1972. The other songs in the set here include a track dating back to Trout Mask Replica (‘Steal Softly Thru Snow’) and also a track that would feature on Clear Spot some eight months later (‘Golden Birdies’).

Tracks: 1. MASCARA SNAKE (BASS SOLO) 3:06 , 2. CLICK CLACK 1 3:44 , 3. CLICK CLACK 2 1:26 , 4. GOLDEN BIRDIES 1:58 , 5. BAND INTROS 0:56 , 6. I'M GONNA BOOGLARIZE YOU BABY 1 4:26 , 7. I'M GONNA BOOGLARIZE YOU BABY 2 5:02 , 8. STEAL SOFTLY THRU THE SNOW 3:33 , 9. I'M GONNA BOOGLARIZE YOU BABY 3 5:19.

EUGENE CHADBOURNE - ZUPA DUPA KUPA

Recorded in the U.S.A. with a bunch of fellow musicians and released (on vinyl !) on the Polish MonotypeRec label, "Zupa Dupa Kupa" brings new material by Eugene Chadbourne.
You get Eugene Chadbourne in a familiar setting: fingerpicking on an acoustic guitar, and singing his folky, bluesy songs about the things he (dis)likes.
And quite good it is, "Zupa Dupa Kupa".

I still don't have a clue to what the album title refers to, but I like what I hear.
It may sound pretty straight-forward to those who are familiar with Doctor Chadbourne's output, but it's also a good starting point for those who have never heard the man.

PREVIEW OF THE NEW ZAPPATIKA SINGLE

"here is a preview of the new 2012 single from ZAPPATiKA . The song is available on most major music stores from 1st June, including CDBaby.com,i-Tunes,Napster etc"

FREAK KITCHEN - LAND OF THE FREAKS

Freak Kitchen is recording their new album, "Cooking With Pagans", as I'm typing this. So to avoid running behind, I added the data for their latest album earlier today.
"Land Of The Freaks" got released in 2009 and it displays the Freak Kitchen Trio in all its splendor.
  • Mattias IA Eklundh on guitar and vocals;
  • Christer Örtefors on bass and vocals;
  • Björn Fryklund: drums and tabla.
Heavy rock / prog rock at its best with spotlights on guitar wonder Mattias IA Eklundh.

Here's 'Teargas Jazz', with a nice input from V.Selvaganesh and Neyveli S Radhakrishna.

and my personal favourite: 'OK'.

VINCENZO VASI / GIORGIO PACORIG - PERFAVORE SING

"Pervavore Sing" is a music project commisioned by AngelicA. It was premiered at the AngelicA international music festival in Bologna, Italy on May 21, 2009.
The album includes Frank Zappa's 'It Just Might Be A One-Shot Deal' and The Residents' 'Hell No' as performed by Vincenzo Vasi and Giorgio Pacorig.

Do I like it?
Well, yes and no. I do like the avant-garde & jazz approach and their coverversions sound great. It's just that the entire album is a bit too much of the same.

ISKRA - LIBERTE EGALITE HUMANITE

Bengt Berger's Country & Eastern record label, recently released two albums : Bengt Berger, Roland Keijser & Kjell Westling's "The Vedbod Tapes", and ISKRA's "Liberté Egalité Humanité".

I talked about "The Vedbod Tapes" album a couple of days ago, saying that the album offers a collection of improvisations in which jazz, free jazz, western folk and eastern melodies and percussion are mixed into adventurous musical pieces. Recommended listening.

ISKRA goes one step further.
from the liner notes:

"From 1970 to 1992, ISKRA was Skandinavia's foremost group for free improvised music. They made finciful, unpredictable, uniquely personal music that transgressed all genre boundaries. ISKRA's music was built on the collective improvisation, and the arsenal of instruments used was limitless."

Named after the early 20th century Russian socialist newspaper, ISKRA wanted to translate their political ideas into music. They use three key-words to demonstrate this.
'Liberté' / Liberty stands for playing freely. ISKRA searches the music of the moment, created on the spot. 'Egalité' / Equality means that there is no conductor of bandleader present. ISKRA opposes hierarchical thinking. Anyone can come up with an iniative, with any instrument. 'Humanité' / Humanity shows that the ISKRA musicians want to connect to the ongoing struggle for equal rights for all humans around the world.
So when original ISKRA members Jörgen Adolfsson, Tuomo Haapala, Sune Spångberg and Arvid Uggla teamed up for a reunion in Stockholm in 2003, they played a spontaneous, completely improvised set.
"Liberté Egalité Humanité" brings us a recording of this concert.

This is not for the faint hearted. I've listened to the album a couple of times already, and it needs another couple of listenings. The music is completely free with very few interfaces or reference points. There is, however, a fine interaction between the musicians and you can tell that they have played together before.

"Liberté Egalité Humanité" needs multiple listenings, and it asks for you complete attention.

Beautiful.

Recommended listening.

Here are two YouTube samples to give you an idea of what ISKRA is about: two animated movies with music by ISKRA.

SUN RA BOOK 2000

"Sun Ra Book 2000" is a collection of xeroxed newspaper and magazine articles, and pictures, compiled by Peter Hinds / Sun Ra Research. It's a spiral bound, thick book.
Fun to read and to browse through.
Another great job by Sun Ra Research.
My copy got released in October 2001 and is the 2nd edition.

It reminds me a lot of the excellent "Beat The Books" series that Ron van den Boom compiled years ago. 12 volumes of Zappa articles.
Early ninetees, I think.
Thanks again, Ron.

FRIED DÄHN & THE YELLOW STRING QUARTET AT ZAPPANALE

Fried Dähn & The Yellow String Quartet

You know what it's like: Just when you think that you set up a nice program... something is happening. In this case it's the icing on the cake. And it's a really impressive icing we like to present you at Zappanale #23:

The cellist, composer and sound-artist Friedemann 'Fried' Dähn is working in classical, contemporary and electronic music as well as in media and video arts.
In 1989 he completed his studies with Johannes Goritzki at the Düsseldorf music conservatory "with exellence", after having taken part in additional master classes with Boris Pergamenschikow, Heinrich Schiff, Michael Flaksman and Misha Maisky.
Between 1990 and 1993 he has been cellist of the well known Ensemble Modern in Frankfurt, where he had the possibility to work with K.-H. Stockhausen, Ornette Coleman and Frank Zappa, to mention only a few. The Ensemble Modern was working a few years with Frank Zappa and finally presented 'The Yellow Shark' in Frankfurt.
Fried Dähn is a big Zappa fan and with the Yellow String Quartet, founded in the beginning of 2011, he wants to set a memorable counterpoint against all the electric guitars, keaboards and several drums at Zappanale.
The members of the Yellow String Quartet are soloists from the Württembergische Philharmonie. Timo de Leo (violin), Konrad Balik (violin), Benjamin Hartung (viola) and Friedemann ,Fried' Dähn (cello) will play compositions from Igor Strawinsky, Dimitri Schostakowitsch, Joseph Haydn, Terry Riley, Fried Dähn and of course from Frank Zappa.

DON PRESTON DATA ADDED

When I mentioned the latest Don Preston album a little while ago, "Filters, Oscillators & Envelopes 1967 - 75", out on Sub Rosa, I told you that there was a limited print-run being pressed on marbled white vinyl.
I added a picture of the vinyl to the Don Preston entry over at the United Mutations Archives earlier today.

It even smells good...

GREG MALCOLM AND EUGENE CHADBOURNE - JAZZ SCHOOL

  • greg malcolm / eugene chadbourne: jazz school
(2010, lp, poland, monotyperecords monolp 002)
The polish MonotypRec label has been issuing CDs since 2005. Somewhere around 2010 they started releasing a vinyl albums as well. One of the first ones, was a collaboration between Eugene Chadbourne and Greg Malcolm, two guitarists with an interest in avant-garde music.

The duo found one another in New Zealand, and recorded "Jazz School", going through Steve Lacey and Eric Dolphy compositions.
This is interesting. Just two guitars in a low-fi environment, exploring music.
Recommended listening.

Released in a limited edition of 250 copies, with few still available.

Here's a sample:

2 MANY DJ'S - AS HEARD ON RADIO SOULWAX PT.2

Record Store Day 2012 saw the rerelease of this 2002 album by 2 Many DJ's. Originally released on CD, the album was now made available on vinyl.
One of the tracks that the duo toys around with, is The Residents' 'Kaw-Liga'.

2 Many DJ's are so-called mash-up artists. The take a couple of tracks and mash them up. Quite funny at times. Here are some examples, all taken from this very Volume Two.

DWEEZIL ZAPPA - RETURN OF THE SON OF...

"Return Of The Son Of..." got released in 2010 as a 2CD set.
The same album got a vinyl re-release as a 3LP set in 2011.
Same tracks, all Frank Zappa compositions taken from the Zappa Plays Zappa tour, but put in a different package.
Data have been added to the United Mutations Archives.

SUN RA RESEARCH, THE FANZINE

I added another couple of pictures of the Sun Ra Research fanzine to the Sun Ra Research entry over at the United Mutations Archives. Numbers 2, 3, 4, 5, 32 & 33.

Jazz vocalist Gretchen Parlato contributed to Marcus Miller's latest album "Renaissance".

Gretchen Parlato is the daughter of Dave Parlato, the bass player that toured with Zappa Grand and Petit Wazoo Orchestra.

"Renaissance" includes a composition entitled "Mr.Clean". It's a funky jazz tune, not to be confused with the Zappa-penned tune.

RESIDENTS UPDATE

Charles Bocuck, composer for The Residents for the last 40 years, has released a solo album: "Codgers On The Moon". It's available through the Ralph ebay-outlet only.
Sold in smaller batches and announced through the website.

DOCKER'S GUILD - THE MYSTIC TECHNOCRACY (SEASON 1)

  • docker's guild: the mystic technocracy (season 1: the age of ignorance)
    (2012, cd, --, lion music)
Here's something that you don't hear that often: Douglas R. Docker wrote a rock opera in five parts. Part one, or season one as it's called, is about to get released on the Lion Music record label.

Although Douglas Docker says that he's inspired by progressive bands like Yes, ELP, Dream Theater and Genesis, the album has a heavy AOR signature.
Besides Douglas R. Docker (keyboard & vocals) the album features quite a selection of musicians: Gregg Bissonette, Magnus Jacobson, Tony Franklin, Guthrie Govan and John Payne, to name just a few.

As you might guess by the cover, the opera itself is a science fiction story. It's about all the wars and murders that people have comitted in the name of their God.
It's not a story against religion as such, but more about the madness of fundamental, dogmatic views.

Fans of keyboard-oriented OAR need to check this out.

Here's the official trailer:

THE CAPTAIN BEEFHEART RECORD STORE DAY 7"

I love record store. I think the idea behind Record Store Day is great: you schedule some specific releases; you do some in-store concerts; it's good promo. But I do not understand the 'available on Record Store Only' blah blah.

A couple of weeks ago, I did drive to a participating record store. I did not have a lot of time, so I picked the one that was closest to home. Unfortunately, this one did not offer the Beefheart 7" that I had on top of my list. He had only received one copy, and that had been reserved for someone else.
I did ask around, and it seemed that it had sold out in the stores that carried it. Too bad.
The funny thing, however, is that you can still find loads of them for sale at ebay. For a slightly augmented price that is.

I did buy one, and it does look & sound great. But I wasn't able to buy it at Record Story Day and that's a bit sad.

THE BELGIAN BEEFHEART 7"

I have had numerous questions about this one over the years. The main one being: 'Does it exist?'.
Appearantly, a belgian collector said that he had a copy for sale, but he never showed his copy to anyone. And that's how the rumour started.

Anyway, it does exist. And it did change hands a while ago.
The latest owner (who lives in the UK) offered his copy up for sale at ebay.
For a mere 600 UK Pounds.

It did not get sold, but we did get to see the pictures.

from the ebay listing

"I am selling this 'Ultra Rare" Belgian 7" Single which is extremely scarce. It took me '20 YEARS' to verify a copy actually existed - The Magic Band's debut 45 was released in the USA and Canada on A&M Records in Jan 1966 and had a very 'limited' pressing outside the USA. It was actually only released in *Feb '66 in Canada (on A&M also), plus a very limited pressing in Australia (on Festival Records) and this obscure European pressing on London Records 5 5559 - who were distributors for A&M at the time. [*The Date can be seemingly verfied as Roy Orbison had 2 Singles released in 1966 on London Records 5564 + 5.581 - The 1st being only 5 Numbers after Beefheart's!]

Why it didn't merit an original release here in the UK but was pressed in Australia + Belgium of all places, is just another strange story in History of The Magic Band? - Strange as there was a burgeoning R&B/Blues Scene in the UK - but with no promotion until John Peel championed The Magic Band in 1967 on his Pirate Radio Show, the single only had local success in their home town of Lancaster, California.

In 1971 - A&M decided to try again by releasing all 4 tracks from the two A&M Singles on a 7" P/Sleeve EP but this project was aborted with only a few advance/promotional pressed before it was withdrawn (due possibly to the band cancelling their much publicised UK appearance at the Hollywood Music Festival in Stafford that year..) making that demo highly collectable also.

Why was it released in Europe & not in the UK? Whatever reason, it has made it the 'rarest' stock Magic Band single without doubt! I was only made aware of it's existence by Bill Pircz & John Ellis (2 US Beefheatarians) almost 20 years ago when they both posted me details of this record and the Canadian pressing on their Beefheart 'wish' lists and I must have written to over 1000 European record collectors over the years until I uncovered a copy (and believe me I paid a lot of money for it!)"

JOE DENINZON TRIO - EXUBERANCE

Talking about the new Stratospheerius album, I thought I should mention another side of Joe Deninzon as well.
With Stratospheerius, you get progressive rock with an electric violin that makes you think of Zappa, Hendrix or Vai. In the Joe Deninzon Trio however, it's all about the gypsy jazz of Stephane Grapelli and Django Rheinhardt.
The tracklist is excellent, including original compositions by Joe Deninzon and by Bob Bowen (on bass), alongside tunes by Steely Dan, Alice In Chains, Jimmy Webb, Fats Waller and Radiohead.
And I forgot to mention Django Rheinhardt's 'Nuages'.

Nice.

STRATOSPHEERIUS - THE NEXT WORLD...

"The Next World..." is Stratospheerius' sixth album (if you count their live DVD as number four).
Stratospheerius plays progressive rock. On this latest release, frontman Joe Deninzon (electric violin and vocals) gets Aurelien Dudynek (guitar & fretless guitar) by his side.
Fine compositions, crazy time signatures and great solos.
Perfect for a sunday morning, or any other moment of the week.

Joe Deninzon mentions Frank Zappa and Jean-Luc Ponty as him main influences. I guess he might add Yes, King Crimson and the Mahavishnu Orchestra to that list.

Recommended listening !

BENGT BERGER, ROLAND KEIJSER & KJELL WESTLING - THE VEDBOD TAPES

Drummer, percussionist and composer Bengt Berger has performed with many jazz and world music ensembles. He has been studying music in India since 1965 and in Ghana in the seventies.
He performed with Don Cherry and with the Bitter Funeral Beer Band, and has recorded as Berger Knutsson Spering, and Beches Brew to name a few.

Bengt Berger started the Country & Eastern record label in 2005.
Country & Eastern has released improvisational jazz, indian world music, and much more.

Bengt Berger: "Country & Eastern will produce live music and albums with what we consider Great music regardless of style. The common factor is quality"

www.countryandeastern.se

The story behind "The Vedbod Tapes" is quite interesting: Bengt Berger, Roland Keijser and Kjell Westling had been playing together since the second half of the 1960's. Their ways parted, but occasionally crossed again. One of these occasions took place in the summer of 1977.
Roland Keijser: "I was at the time close to taking a break from music. I had moved out into the country, and a year earlier sawed my left hand badly. A quiet life in the woods beckoned...
But what is one to do when good friends call by, thirsting to play?"

And that's where "The Vedbod Tapes" start, at Roland Keijser's vedbod (= woodshed). Roland Keijser on soprano sax, clarinet, bamboo flute and cornet; the late Kjell Westling on bass clarinet, sopranino sax, harmonium and violin; and Bengt Berger on drums and mridangam (an indian drum).

The result sounds very impressive. You get a collection of improvisations in which jazz, free jazz, western folk and eastern melodies and percussion are mixed into adventurous musical pieces: fine improvisations and great interaction. This is great.

As Roland Keijser adds in the liner notes: "What do we play? Apparently free from the heart, memory and imagination. Mostly collective improvisations. But also a couple of Ornette Coleman tunes, some popular songs, the odd polska, waltz and halling, a few tango bars... But, above all, sundry lengthy chunks of unidentifiable invetions, the names of which are known only to the woodshed..."

"The Vedbod Tapes" is a beautiful album, and a fine salute to Kjell Westling who passed away in the autumn of 2010.

Recommended listening!

THE RESIDENTS - FINGERPRINCE

  • the residents: fingerprince
    (2012, cd, usa, mvdaudio)
MVD continues their series of Residents re-releases with another classic: "Fingerprince".
Originally intended to be a 3-sided vinyl album, entitled "Tourniquet Of Roses", the project got divided into the "Fingerprince" LP and the "Babyfingers" EP.
As with the previous CD editions, the entire project is released on one disc, so we get the complete album.

I love this album. It has all the typical Residents elements inside, including Snakefinger's excellent guitar.

An excellent introduction to those who aren't familiar with the Eyeballed Ones.

THE RESIDENTS - THE THIRD REICH 'N ROLL

  • the residents: the third reich 'n' roll
    (2012, cd, usa, mvd)
"The Third Reich 'N Roll" was The Residents' second release. It got released in 1976. Actually, it was to be their third album, but the already recorded "Not Available" only came out in 1978.
With "The Third Reich 'N Roll" it became clear that The Residents' World would not be limited to releasing music. The album cover shows TV host Dick Clark in a nazi uniform, and the music is a parody / collage / reworking of music that The Residents grew up with.
A track list might look something like this:
side one - Swastikas on Parade
  1. Let's Twist Again
  2. Land of a Thousand Dances
  3. Hanky Panky
  4. A Horse with No Name
  5. Double Shot (Of My Baby's Love)
  6. The Letter
  7. Psychotic Reaction
  8. Little Girl
  9. Papa's Got a Brand New Bag (German version)
  10. Talk Talk (The Music Machine)
  11. Telstar/Wipe Out
side two - Hitler Was A Vegetarian
  1. Judy in Disguise (With Glasses)
  2. 96 Tears
  3. It's My Party
  4. Light My Fire
  5. Ballad of the Green Berets
  6. Yummy Yummy Yummy
  7. Rock Around the Clock/Pushing Too Hard
  8. Good Lovin'
  9. Gloria
  10. In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida
  11. Sunshine of Your Love
  12. Hey Jude/Sympathy for the Devil

Re-released by MVD audio on CD.

DON PRESTON IN SINISTER FLESH (1974)

In 1974 the famed showman and impresario Maxwell DeMille went against the popular trend of talking pictures and produced the silent feature film Sinister Flesh. At last, this rare movie has been restored from the vault negatives. Featuring a wonderful soundtrack by Dean Mora playing the Mighty Wurlitzer Theatre Organ. Included are additional sequences, plus new titles created in the style of the classic silent pictures of yesteryear.

The movie features Don Preston as Ogo Moto !!

ARTHUR VEROCAI

The wondrous world of the internet brought me this beautiful composition by Arthur Verocai. Released on an extremely rare vinyl album in 1972, and more recently on CD.
Jean-Pierre Vidal shared this on Facebook on the L'Homme Wazoo page.
It sounds very zappa-esque.
The rest of the album sounds quite good as well, but 'Karina' is great. Enjoy !

THE ROXY DVD...

two days ago, this message from the Zappa Family Trust came in.

Hello Boys & Girls,

About 10 Years Ago, shortly after Al Gore invented the internet, we here at UMRK, where we feel it is our duty … decided to announce plans for the Roxy Performances to be unleashed at last on a wholly suspecting public and others besides. What We Knew Then compared to What We Know Now about what is possible is something completely different. I could romanticize and say that over here at the Other Side of the Miracle of Time & Space there is nothing stopping us but the Movie Monster. Every Monster Movie has at least one. Our Movie Monster is THE BUDGET.

Because of the condition the condition was in - no synch, no idea what was what, no idea of the actual coverage, no idea of the quality; all the et ceterae that caused FZ to abandon the project completely - it took all this time (if you include all the other priorities and distractions) to get to this point, so near and yet so far: All of the footage has now been transferred on a best light basis into HD and all camera angles have been "synched" by eye and heart and hand and edit to the original Nagra tapes. We now need to identify all usable camera angles and begin the actual edit. Still, we have miles to go in order to bring the best of the possibilities to a screen near you. And we need your help.

We still have a few wrinkles but our irons are hot and the details of our plan for the next Official Release is bundled in a unique opportunity to participate in a special, social experiment designed to open lots of doors for all Artists and their fans everywhere. Participate and You'll be First. First with your own copy of a Soundtrack to The Roxy Performances. First with your name credited in The Roxy Performances, The Movie. And there are more Firsts. Stay Tuned.

But first, a word from our sponsors. We'll be back with all the relevant details right after the other Mothers' Day.

Thank you for your kind attention to this matter.

FABRIZIO CASSOL - STRANGE FRUIT

Fabrizio Cassol plays the saxophone in Aka Moon. He's also the man behind Aka Moon's beautiful compositions.
The last couple of years, Fabrizio Cassol has released "Vsprs" and "Pitié", albums that were inspired by Monteverdi and by Bach. Fine albums.
On "Strange Fruit", however, Fabrizio has surpassed himself. "Strange Fruit" is an amazing album.

As Fabrizio explained on Cobra TV, it took him several years to finish the project, recording with various musicians with different musical backgrounds.
This is world music at it's best.
To name a few of the vocalists, the album features Oumou Sangare from Bali, Baba Sissoko from Mali, classical soprano Claron McFadden, and lead singer of Zap Mama Marie Daulne.
The music is brilliant, mixing jazz, world music, classical music and catchy themes.

I love it.

Essential listening !!
