ZAPPATIKA UPDATE

I'll just repeat what the flyer says :-)

Friday, the 21st of January, Zappatika will be performing the music of Frank Zappa at 'The Rambler' in Eindhoven, NL.

If you're into something experimental, you should give Signal Break a listen.

They will be touring in January.

GIDGET GEIN - SUSPENSION OF DISBELIEF

"Suspension Of Disbelief" is the collage of sounds that goes with the "UnPoP Can" artwork which both have been produced by Gidget Gein.

Gidget Gein's alias is a mixture of the title of a novel and the name of a serial killer. (and so is Marilyn Manson's.)
The "UnPoP Can" artwork which is shown on the cover of this album, displays a series of cans that have a label that says "Zyklon B - Gift Gas" (poison gas). The soundcollage on the album is made up of a German speech, march music, animal noises and laughter.

Gidget's art site says:
"This CD is a representation of the sounds Gidget heard somewhere "out there" while creating the Unpop Can painting that is represented on the album cover. No conventional instruments were used in this effort - rather, a Mac computer, antique toys, a gramophone and deconstruction were responsible for making this disc possible."

The album got released in 2007 on the Transparency label.

In the following YouTube movie Gidget Gein presented some of his work. There's a nice segment on his UnPoP Can.

THE RESIDENTS - LOST IN A VACANT LOT

  • the residents: lost in a vacant lot
    (2010, cdr & dl, --, ralph records rz 1010)

The latest Residents album, "Lost In A Vacant Lot", is a compilation. Subtitled "The Best Of The New Millennium", it presents some fine tracks from "Demons Dance Alone", "Animal Lover", "Tweedles", "The Voice Of Midnight", The Bunny Boy" and "The Ughs".

Album and cover have been added to The Residents' entry at the United Mutations Archives.

THE RESIDENTS - BRAVA

  • the residents: brava
    (2010, cdr & dl, --, ralph records rz 1009)
It has been quite a busy year for the Eyeball Buddies. Our Resifriends have been releasing loads of material. It started with a couple of dowload-only-albums, continued with the Talking Light concerts, a CD, more download-only-stuff, a DVD, and, finally, two CDRs-on-demand.

"Brava" is one of these CDRs-on-demand (or download - whatever you prefer). The album was recorded live at the 'Brava Theater' in San Francisco, October 2001.
It was a great show, emphasizing the importance of Nolan Cook and Molly Harvey for the Residents' sound the last ten years or so.
I really like this.

Essential !!

GIDGET GEIN - THE LAW OF DIMINISHING RETURNS

The little sticker on the CD cover says: "Gidget Gein. Artist, Author, Funeral Assistant and former bass player for Marilyn Manson", which I like as an introduction.

It even could have said "co-founder of Marilyn Manson", as the late Bradley Stewart (Gidget Gein) and Brian Warner (Marilyn Manson) started the band together.
Anyway, that's got nothing to do with "The Law Of Diminishing Returns".

"The Law Of Diminishing Returns" is a fourty-minute soundtrack to the sculpture "In Case Of Emergency Break Heart", also by Gidget Gein, and, if I'm not mistaken, depicted on the album cover.
The music / soundtrack is very dark. The repeated lines on Gidget Gein's fuzz bass plus Brian Butler's guitar soundscapes results in a lugubrious atmosphere. It fits the cover art rather well.

The liner notes add: "This is not a record, in the ordinary sense of the world. No, this is a prolongued insult, a gob of spit in the face of art, a kick in the pants to god, man, destiny, time, love, beauty... What you will..."

Impressive.

Available from Transparency.

Here's a link to some of his artwork. It includes a piece entitled "Residents 1". Looks great.

THE KENEALLIST

Here's a recent issue of Mike Keneally's newsletter.
Please notice that Mike will be in The Netherlands in February, and he's looking for possible gigs in NL, but also in Belgium and / or Luxemburg !!
I you have contacts, tell them about it.

THE KENEALLIST Dec. 21 2010: Holidays & Holland!

Hello! Happy Frank Zappa's birthday! I write to you from my hotel in Denver, a couple of hours prior to the last gig on the first leg of the Satriani North America tour - tomorrow I go home for a blessed 10 days of rest and holidays and repacking, and then we start it up again on Jan. 3 (see dates elsewhere in this missive). I'm really grateful for this touring experience and the whole experience of being in Joe's band - phenomenally good fun.

In February, KMB (myself, Bryan and Marco) will be going to Arnhem, The Netherlands to conduct workshops and perform for a couple of days. We'd love to do more shows while we're there, but the standard channels of organizing such things have thus far yielded zilch. Bryan Beller, who is so eloquent in such matters, has penned the following entreaty which I'm delighted to steal, rather than attempt to rephrase weakly:

"This is directed specifically to the people of The Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg. I wanted to tell you about something, and also ask for your help with something.

Here's what I want to tell you: Mike Keneally, Marco Minnemann and I are coming to do a two-day instructional workshop/performance at the ArtEZ in Arnhem, The Netherlands on February 17 and 18! We're very excited about this and will have more news about it posted on our websites soon.

Now here's what I want to ask you: Would you like to help us book a KMB (Keneally-Minnemann-Beller) gig while we're there?

Since we booked the workshop on somewhat short notice and there's not much time, we thought it would be most effective to simply reach out to everyone we know to see what the possibilities are.

If you've been reading BellerBytes this year [BellerBytes is Bryan's emailing list - ed.], you know that my wife Kira Small and I have had a lot of success in reaching out to the folks on our mailing lists - not just about house concerts, but about venue shows as well, and just general connections to folks who love music and want to help. Are you that person?
Then e-mail us at kmbholland@keneally.com and let us know what you're thinking.

As far as dates are concerned, Saturday February 19 and Sunday February 20 are both good, as well as the entire week leading up to Thursday February 17. We know it's been way too long since we've done gigs in Benelux, and we want to fix that as soon as we can. If you think you have an idea that will help, now's the time.

Thanks and happy holidays, Bryan Beller"

Wasn't that nicely stated? I think it was! Happy holidays to you, Bryan Beller!

All righty! Love to the whole bunch of ya! Severely happy holidays to you!

Yours forever,

Mike

CHICANERY - CHICANERY

Chicanery is a collaboration between Warren Cuccurullo and Neil Carlill.

Neil Carlill first met Warren Cuccurullo in England in the late 1990s. Carlill was a guest on the TV Mania project that was created by both Cuccurullo and Nick Rhodes of Duran Duran. A number of years after both Cuccurullo and Carlill relocated to the U.S., they began work on "Chicanery".

The band recorded one album, released on dPulse Recordings simultaneously in North America, and Europe on May 2010. Chicanery was made available in CD and digital formats in America, and in digital format initially in Europe.
Guest musicians include a.o. Terry Bozzio and Joe Travers.
The debut single, 'Hubert Selby Song', was released, along with 'Gold Pavillions' as an extra track, on iTunes on April 27, 2010.

There's a fine review of the album in the latest issue of The Arf Dossier.
Haven't heard the actual album yet. Just added the data into the United Mutations Archives.

NEW ZAPPA CD BOOTLEG "VIENNA IS CALLING"

Haven't heard or seen it, but I received this newsflash with pictures and info, so I added all of it to the FZ CD Bootleg section.

ARF DOSSIER VOL.66

The latest Arf Dossier (the december 2010 issue) arrived last week.
There's always something new in there, and I love browsing through a magazine. I even find it more appealing than reading stuff on the internet :-)

Volume 66 of the Arf Dossier has a number of fine articles: the Baltimore Zappa bust, Thomas Jung on the Sheik Yerbouti adventure, reviews of new releases (including the two latest Zappa album: "Congress..." and "Hammersmith..."), and lots more.

(personal note) Things to remember / CDs to check out: Warren Cuccurullo's new Chicanery project, Michael Kieran Harvey's "48 Fugues For Frank" (Zappa that is!!), the new Chad Wackerman Trio DVD.

NEW ZAPPA BOOTLEG ALBUM "ZAPPA DOWN UNDER"

A new Zappa bootleg album has turned up: "Zappa down under".
It's a 2 LP set that includes the 1973/06/25 concert.
The album has been produced in limited edition of 500 copies in 5 different colours.

DAEHN, BRUHN & SCHMITZ - IN ROCK WITH NAPOLEON MURPHY BROCK

November 2010, Napoleon Murphy Brock did two concerts with Dähn, Bruhn & Schmitz GBR in Hamburg, Germany.
A promotional CD and DVD with recordings of the performances got released.

The band performed classic rock songs from the 70's and 80's, spiced up with a couple of Zappa compositions.
Napoleon was in good shape. Unfortunately, he does not sing too much on these recordings, and the vocals aren't the strongest point of Daehn, Bruhn & Schmitz.
He does play a lot of saxophone, however, and I have to say that NMB still is one of the funkiest sax players around.

As stated above, Dähn, Bruhn & Schmitz released a promotional CDR and DVDR of this concert. Both are audience recordings, so don't expect soundboard quality.
Still, very enjoyable.

THIERRY DE MEY - UNDO

(picture and data of) Another beautiful album has been added to the United Mutations Archives.
Thierry De Mey might be known to you as one of the founders of the Maximalist! ensemble and of the Ictus Ensemble.
"Undo" is a project from 1991. Out on the legendary Sub Rosa label.

SHAKERS N' BAKERS

"Shakers n' Bakers" you say?
Yes, "Shakers n' Bakers". It's one of the best discoveries that I've made in a while.
When Tom LaRosa sent me some mp3 samples of Shakers n' Bakers a little while ago, I was sold immediately.
The emphasis of the songs on these albums lies in the melody. Beautiful, almost hypnotic melodies are sung, shouted or chanted, accompanied by a bit of piano and by a saxophone.
This is really great. And funny.

From the website:
"Shakers n' Bakers performs Shaker "Vision" songs. These are songs that were received in states of trance by young women of the Shaker religious community during the years 1830-50.
These songs were researched in Shaker archives and many are sung in languages of inspiration (including moon language). This music is interpreted through the lens of creative music by leading improvisors on the New York scene, and travels stylistically from free jazz to rock anthems, but always with love and respect for the sacred origins of the songs."

So this asked for a small investigation. The Shakers were some sort of religious group from a couple of hundred years ago. There's quite a bit that you can read about it on the web.
The hilarious thing about it is that they believed quite strongly in celibacy. Nothing wrong with that if you're into that sort of thing, but it did imply that the Shakers did not get any children and so their number decreased rather rapidly...

I thought it was quite a funny story. I even thought it was all bogus (I'm still not convinced that it's all true. It's just too funny.)
Anyway, Shakers n' Bakers is a group of musicians led by Jeff Lederer and Mary Larose, and they play some great music.

Check out the previews at CDBaby. You won't be dissapointed.

NEW ZAPPA CD BOOTLEG "JOE'S DEMOGE"

Over at the Zappa CD Bootleg Section, at the U.M.Archives, I've added a new item. It's called "Joe's Demoge" and it's a brand-new Zappa bootleg CD.
It includes recordings of two 1980 rehearsals.

Don't forget that if you want to hear some Zappa concert recordings, you don't have to get if from bootlegs. There's a nice batch of new live titles available from www.zappa.com, and if that isn't enough, you can always check out Zappateers for more.

I recently added the picture and data of this Wim Vandekeybus album to the United Mutations Archives.

For "Immer Das Selbe Gelogen", the music was written by Charo Calvo, Carlo Verano and Peter Vermeersch, and performed by X-Legged Sally.

EXTRA INFO ON THE NEW SUN RA SPACE PROBE ALBUM

Over at the Saturn newsgroup, Paul said:

The Artyard re-issue of Space Probe will be released at some point in early 2011 but I can't say precisely when. It will be worth the wait however. There are a number of bonus tracks that are from the choreographers workshop sessions with the same stripped down Arkestra sound found on side 2 of the original lp. Two of the bonus pieces feature Theda Barbara on vocals from the same session that produced 'Circe' on the lp When Sun Comes Out. There is the full version of Primitive (the other half of which was released separately as 'Dimensions In Time' on the Evidence cd of When Sun Comes Out) and a few other short but cool pieces.

Then there is Space Probe itself. For me this is one of Sun Ra's great recordings. Full of extraordinary sounds and textures, there is a section about a third of the way in where two Moog pulses are set alongside each other and from out of the midst of the deepest space music Ra conjures ancient African 12/8 cross rhythms. Sublime Ra music and perhaps the quintessential Afro-Futurist moment.

SATURN NEWSGROUP ON THE MOVE

The (excellent) Saturn Newsgroup is relocating.

********************************

Dear Saturnites, Saturnoids, and Saturnalia—

As you know, the nic.surfnet.nl listserv mailing list server will no longer host the Saturn list, and this list will shut down at the end of December 31 of 2010. The time has come to migrate across the wilderness of cyberspace to a new home where we can continue to celebrate, speculate, debate, and even spectate (lurk) about all topics about Sun Ra and the Arkestra.

Over the past few weeks the beta team has been busy trying out the new mailing list and website, and I'd like to think that it is ready for us to take occupancy. It's time to perform the migration. Here is the new website:

VARIOUS ARTISTS - CONCEPTUAL CONTINUITY - A COVER FREAK TRIBUTE TO FRANK ZAPPA

Over at Cover Freak Dot Com, WebMaster Steve has compiled a Frank Zappa tribute.
11 artists, 40 minutes and a free download.
I like this sort of concept.

You know that in my book, I'm not really looking for the exact replica. I like it when something new is added, or when the 'angle of incidence' is a bit different from what we're used to.
And I'm quite satisfied with this album.

My favourite tracks are 'Dirty Love' by John Dissed, Hector Ferreiro and Myra Washington; David T. Allen with 'Later That Night'; Lumpy and his 'Willie The Pimp' in reggae style; and Butt-Out's bluesy 'Yellow Snow'.
Very nice, thankyouverymuch.

THE FZ AAA FNRAA AA BIRTHDAY BUNDLE 2010

The ZFT celbrated Frank Zappa's 70th anniversary with an iTunes release: The Frank Zappa AAA FNRAA AA Birthday Bundle 21 Dec 2010.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/the-frank-zappa-aaafnraaaa/id410582595

I think that it's a very fine little album: a great rap version of 'Willie The Pimp' by Ahmet Zappa and his posse, Ahmet's rendition of 'Bobby Brown', a bunch of FZ live tracks, 2 Zappa Plays Zappa tunes (that we already have, but they fit in fine), Macy Gray (!!) performing 'Your Mouth', singer/songwriter Holland with 'Take Your Clothes Off...', and 'Chloe and Robert Trujillo (of Metallica fame) doing 'The Torture Never Stops'.

Very nice.

FAST & BULBOUS - THE CAPTAIN BEEFHEART PROJECT

Somewhere in 2001, I received a demo of Fast & Bulbous, Phillip Johnston's Captain Beefheart project, that also would feature the great Gary Lucas.
When the band started touring in October of the same year, they performed their first concerts in Italy, Belgium and Germany. I was at the Brugge, Belgium, concert and I still have vivid memories of it. Instrumental Beefheart Jazz. I loved it.

We're ten years later now, and Fast & Bulbous have released two beautiful albums: "Pork Chop Blue..." and "Waxed Oop", both on the Cuneiform record label.
And about a week ago, a digital audience recording of the Brugge concert turned up at The Traders Den. What a nice X-mas present :-)
