PHISH - NEW YEAR'S EVE 1993 - LIVE AT WORCESTER CENTRUM

  • PHISH: new year’s eve 1993 - live at worcester centrum
(2026, 3cd box set, USA, jemp records)
(2026, 5lp box set, USA, jemp records)

A fabulous concert presented as a 5 LP but also as a 3 CD box set.
Including Phish performing FZ's 'Peaches En Regalia', shortly after FZ's passing.

Additional info on this release:

Phish’s defining humor, in which you weren’t quite sure if they were making fun of arena rock tropes or living inside them, was happily pervasive as well, obviously with the gag itself but also interspersed throughout the musical program. Drummer Jon Fishman showboated his way through Neil Diamond’s “Cracklin’ Rosie,” the band transformed into a barbershop quartet for “I Didn’t Know,” and they paid tribute to the recently deceased Frank Zappa by weaving the melody to Zappa’s “Peaches En Regalia” into multiple songs throughout the night. (That’s in addition to a proper full rendition—their third in the four-night run.)

PHISH - - - PHISH - JUNTA - LAWN BOY - PICTURE OF NECTAR - RIFT

  • phish: phish
        (1998, cd, usa, phish archives)
It's sort of a Phish day over here.
I started the day with "Phish".
Originally made available as a set of demos in 1986/1987 and eventually released as an eponymous CD in 1998 (and re-issued in 2010).
Fine album. It has the typical Phish sound.

  • phish: junta
        (1992, 2cd, usa, elektra)
The Phish adventure continued with "Junta", Phish' debut studio album.
Released on tape in 1989, the album did get a CD release in 1992 (with some bonus material).
Sounds more 'prog' than I would have expected.

  • phish: lawn boy
(1990, lp, usa, absolute a go go records)

The best Phish album I've heard so far. A typical, relaxed jam band feel plus some great guitar solos by Trey Anastasio.
Love it.

  • phish: a picture of nectar
        (1992, cd, usa, elektra)
Moving from the smaller Absolute Go Go Records label to Elektra must have been quite the step for Phish.
Lots of different styles or blending of different styles on "A Picture Of Nectar".
Nice.
  • phish: rift
        (1993, cd, usa, elektra)
"Rift" was the fourth studio album by Phish.
A bit mellow an soft, maybe, but still a very nice album.

I guess I'll have to call it a day... Don't want a Phish overdose...
But I'm quite happy with what I've heard.

PHISH - SIGMA OASIS

  • phish: sigma oasis
        (2020, lp, usa, jemp records)

Last week, I was happy to enjoy Phish's "Sigma Oasis" album.
Jam-band Phish does exactly what they're expected to: delivering 9 fine songs with their typical groove.

I'm familiar with their live shows as I have listened to a lot of their shows in which they performed FZ's 'Peaches', but a studio album is quite a different thing.
I love it !

Note to myself : I've got to dive into the Phish discography...

PHISH - SIGMA OASIS

  • phish: sigma oasis
        (2020, 2lp, usa, jemp records)
A couple of months ago, Phish released "Sigma Oasis", a studio album that featured a lot of strings and even some additional vocals next to the familiar Anastasio - McConnell - Gordon - Fishman quartet.

Laid-back and uplifting.
I like this a lot.

By the way, did you see the stunning artwork for the recent Phish shows at Madison Square Garden?
Wow !

LIVE PHISH VOLUME 13

Shame on me !
The Phish 1994 Halloween concert (of which the second set was the Beatles tribute) has been officially released by the band as "Live Phish Volume 13".

I mentioned the "Unsurpassed White Album" bootleg yesterday.
Didn't know that it was released by the band as well.
"Excellent news that is, dear Padewan."

PHISH - UNSURPASSED WHITE ALBUM

Jamband Phish has the habit of celebrating Halloween in a rather particular way. They don't dress up. They  just pretend to be another band.
Phish has done their Halloween version of Pink Floyd, The Who, Talking Heads, and more. They even thought about doing Frank Zappa's 'Joe's Garage' but for some reason that didn't happen.

October 31, 1994, Phish performed an entire set of Beatles classics. It got released on a 2 CD bootleg set shortly thereafter called "Unsurpassed White Album".
Great stuff. Both for Beatles and for jam band fans.

I'm still hoping they'll do an entire set of Zappa tunes somewhere in the future. Meanwhile, "Unsurpassed White Album" will do.

As it happens, the wonderful world of Youtube can give you a taste of this 1994 Beatles tribute :

NEW PHISH BOX ANNOUNCED

Jam band Phish not only releases a lot of their concerts (download and/or CD), but they also put out these beautiful boxes from time to time.

The latest one is called "The Bakers Dozen" and collects the 13 shows that Phish did at Madison Square Garden in July 2017.
36 discs.

https://consequenceofsound.net/2018/06/phish-the-bakers-dozen-box-set/

The July 22, 2017 concert (2nd night, already available as a 3 CD set) included Phish performing Frank Zappa's 'Peaches En Regalia', so I'm assuming it will be also be available in this box.

MORE LIVE PHISH DOWNLOADS

Here's two more "Live Phish Downloads" cdr-on-demand albums that include a Zappa track.
Resulting in a total of 10.

'Peaches En Regalia'.

Track 10 on disc one. In concert in Saratoga Springs.

Track 7 on disc one. Live in St. Louis.

LIVE PHISH DOWNLOADS

Here's two more "Live Phish Downloads" albums that belong in The Others Of Invention section :

About one week later, Phish played a completely different set at the Outside Lands Festival in San Fran. They did, however, play 'Peaches En Regalia' again as the fifth song on their setlist.

PHISH - LIVE PHISH 07/18/2017 NUTTER CENTER, DAYTON, OHIO

Jamband Phish is another story. They play Frank Zappa's 'Peaches En Regalia' in concert from time to time but they never seem to get it right.
But I like them. I like them a lot.

As the band releases every concert that they do as a download, and most of them also as a CDR set, I was happy to buy the recent July 18, 2017 concert. 'Peaches' was included as the second song in their setlist.

Here's Trey talking about giving a Phish t-shirt to Frank Zappa...

PHISH - LIVE PHISH 07/22/2017 MADISON SQUARE GARDEN

All of the shows that Phish did at 'Madison Square Garden' in New York City recently, have been released as official downloads and on CD(R).

The second night saw the band performing Zappa's 'Peaches En Regalia', as the first encore.

Listening to it at this very moment.
It does include some very wrong notes, as always, but I think it's great that it keeps popping up during Phish concerts every once in a while.

PHISH - 06.22.12 RIVERBEND MUSIC CENTER, CINCINATTI, OH

Live Phish Downloads produces CDRs with Phish concert recordings.
Looks neat. Sounds pretty good as well.

June 22, 2012, Phish performed FZ's 'Peaches En Regalia' as the second song of their first set.
This concert is available through LivePhishDownloads.

Another fine addition to The Others Of Invention.

A PHISH UPDATE

Jamband Phish makes every concert that they play available. As a download, but most of them also on CD. They've been doing it for a  couple of years now;
I have a couple of these shows. Yes, the ones where they play 'Peaches En Regalia', the Frank Zappa composition.
I mentioned some recent ones a couple of weeks ago.

I should check the Live Phish website again one of these days, 'cause I'm pretty sure that more shows that feature 'Peaches' have been released...

In the meantime, my friend Danny sent me an update for the Phish discography. Counting the Live Phish concert album that the band has released the last year, they have released 385 albums to date !!
Three hundred and eighty-five albums.
I updated the Phish entry at United Mutations with the studio albums.
Album titles only. 18 to date.

Here's Phish performing 'Purple Rain' with a vacuum cleaner (!!) solo...
