SPANNER JAZZ PUNKS HAVE A NEW ALBUM OUT

"We... Are... Not... Alone..."

Out on Cordelia Records :

MORE RESIDENTS

From The Residents' newsletter :

Next, The Residents are pleased to report that their new album, ‘Intruders’, has been completed and is now being prepared for release. Of course, we’re here to hype it, but it really is a remarkable record, and, dare we say, the work of a refreshed Residents. Eleven songs in all, each of them framed within its own vaguely paranoid soundscape, and featuring several guest contributors old and new. It seems the album will be available in your usual favourite formats, alongside some special offerings from our friends at Psychofon too. ETA is currently sometime around October, so watch the skies for an official announcement via Cherry Red and MVD.

And lastly, a reminder that the ‘I AM A RESIDENT!’ album will be released commercially worldwide on August 24th. There’s the regular 2CD version, featuring the IAAR suite and a selection of hand-picked cover versions of all your Residents faves, alongside a very special vinyl edition featuring even more exclusive fan versions. As you probably know, The Residents were overwhelmed by the standard of material submitted by almost two hundred fans for this project, and were moved to produce a remarkable and enduring suite in return. The results may be weird, but it’s an essential addition to The Residents’ canon.

Yeah, they have a canon. Get used to it.

There’s more of course – always more – including ‘Commercial Album’ and ‘Eskimo’ pREServed news – but that can wait. For now, The Residents hope you enjoy ‘The Brickeaters’ and wish you all the best in trying to understand the ‘I AM A RESIDENT!’ and ‘Intruders’ records.

A NOVEL BY THE RESIDENTS

The Brickeaters is an absurdist buddy movie of a story featuring a very tall and young internet content screener teamed up with an aging career criminal whose primary companions are an oxygen bottle and .44 Magnum. After a short crime spree cementing their unhinged partnership, they work together to prevent a middle-aged lottery winner from polluting the LA water supply with massive amounts of fluoride. Their adventures unfold via a wholly unreliable alcoholic narrator desperately avoiding the reality of spousal abandonment.

THE SONICS - UNRELEASED

This 1980 "Unreleased" album by The Sonics collects material from some rare 7" records as well as some indeed unreleased studio material.
It includes their version of 'Any Way The Wind Blows' (Frank Zappa) from 1967, but also a fine version of 'Diddy Wah Diddy' (W.Dixon).

BURNT WEENY SANDWICH

Earlier this month, The Mothers Of Invention's "Burnt Weeny Sandwich" got re-released.
On 180 g vinyl. Comes with the poster.

This was the second Zappa album that I discovered, the first one being "Weasels"...
Both from the local library...
Must have been 1980.

ITZA UCHEN - (THEY'LL) MIX YOU UP / LASSITUDE

This little 7" might well be the first recording that features Pierre Vervloesem.
Playing the electric bass guitar.

Next week, Pierre will be playing the electric bass again. With Flat Earth Society.
There's a gig scheduled at The Gentse Feesten, but the band will also be playing at Zappanale !!

MAMARONECK HIGH SCHOOL STAGE BAND - SIDE GLANCES

Jazz and rock classics performed by a high school band.
Here's the Mamaroneck High School Stage Band.
Next to some original material and some Beatles classics, "Side Glances' includes FZ's 'Peaches En Regalia' in an arrangement of Joe Boerst,, and the 'Hairy Medley', which in fact is 'Little Umbrellas', 'It Must Be A Camel' plus 'Son Of Mr. Green Genes', also arranged by Joe Boerst.
Very fluent. Great dynamics. And an excellent percussion intermezzo during 'Son Of Mr. Green Genes'.
Superb !!

A fine addition to The Others Of Invention.

ALTERNATIVE TV - SPLITTING IN 2

This "Splitting In 2" Alternative TV compilation album includes the band performing Frank Zappa's 'Why Don't You Do Me Right?'.
It got previously released on the 1978 "The Image Has Cracked" album.

Here's 'Why Don't You Do Me Right?' performed by an ATV reincarnation, from 2012 :

A.S.H. PELIKAN - FALSCH AGEBOGEN

German rocker A.S.H. Pelikan has been making music since the early '70's. In 2008, A.S.H. started releasing a series of retrospective albums.
As A.S.H. used to play a lot of coverversions, a lot of them can be found on these albums.
Album number 6 in this series, "Falch Abgebogen", includes A.S.H. performing two Frank Zappa tunes : 'More Trouble Every Day' and 'Big Leg Emma'.

FREAK KITCHEN - NOBODY'S LAUGHING

Around the time of the release of "Move", Freak Kitchen's fifth album, a promotional CD got released in France.
"Move" was the first album with the new line-up. Guitarist Mattias IA Eklundh was still part of the band, but Christer Örtefors (bass) and Björn Fryklund (drums) had only recently replaced Christian Gronlund (bass) and Joakim Sjoberg (drums).

The CD presented and audio and the video clip for 'Nobody's Laughing', plus a medley of all the "Move" tracks.

LISA LESTANDER, JONAS KNUTSSON, MATS ÖBERG - SÅNGER FRÅN NORR

Lisa Lestander recorded a number of traditional folk songs from the upper northern part of Sweden.
With the aid of jazz saxophonisht Jonas Knutsson and keyboard / harmonica genius Mats Öberg, she produced a beautiful album.
Very nice.

The album got released in 2014 on the German WestPark Music label.

Here's a sample :

MATTIAS IA EKLUNDH - FREAK GUITAR

Mattias IA Eklundh released his first solo album in 1999 (not counting his Mr.Libido album from 1996).
As you might know, "Freak Guitar" included a dizzying version of Frank Zappa's 'The Black Page'.
The Japanese edition of "Freak Guitar" had a slightly altered album cover (pictured above), plus one bonus track : 'Our Man In Baijing'.

STUDENTORKESTERN TONGANGARNA - EGEN BLANDNING

I remember talking to Lennart Gustafsson at the Zappanale festival quite some years ago. He told me about this recording and he sent me the necessary data (band, album title, year of release, country and label) so that I could start looking for it.

It took me quite some years to find this particular release, but I finally did.
Too bad that Lennart isn't around anymore. He passed away a couple of years ago.
Thank you, my friend. I'm happy to have known you.

Tongangarne is a student orchestra from Sweden. They're like a brass band, but do include percussion and a guitar. They perform rock and jazz classic in a rather straight-forward way.
There are two medleys to be found on "Egen Blandning". The first one, 'Popen', includes the theme of Frank Zappa's 'I'm The Slime'.
I like it.

Here it is :

ZAPZAPZAPPA

As I just added a picture of Charles Ulrich's "The Big Note" to the United Mutations Archives, I thought it was only appropriate to add the cover of the very first book that was written about Frank Zappa as well.
"Zapzapzappa" was published in 1969. Written / compiled by Rolf Ulrich Kaiser.

For more info on this (or any other) book, go to :
http://www.afka.net/Books/zapzapzappa.htm

CHARLES ULRICH - THE BIG NOTE

  • the big note - a guide to the recordings of frank zappa
    by charles ulrich
(2018, book, canada, new star books)

Charles Ulrich's "The Big Note" is not just a book. It's the ultimate guide to the recordings of Frank Zappa.
Think encyclopedia.

Charles takes you through FZ's albums.
In an alphabetical way, from "Absolutely Free" to "Zoot Allures".
Discussing every song, every composition, and a lot of the musicians that took part in these recordings.

750 pages (!!) of info.
As essential as it can get.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - ELECTRIC MONSTER ROCK SHOW

Jean-Luc Ponty released his (Frank-Zappa-produced) "King Kong" album in 1970.
Later the same year, one of the tracks, 'The Idiot Bastard Son', got released on the "Electric Monster Rock Show" sampler.
Info has been added to The Others Of Invention over at the United Mutations Archives.

THE RUDY SCHWARTZ PROJECT - FULL FRONTAL KLUGMAN

The latest album in the series of re-issues by The Rudy Schwartz Project is the 2013 "Full Frontal Klugman" album.
If you don't have the CD that got released by DC-Jam Records in 2013, here's the opportunity to order it from Kunaki.

Excellent stuff.
Here's the 'Song Of The Coastal Artillery Women'.
Love it.

The album also includes '11 Poop Hatchcha Cha', that uses Captain Beefheart's '81 Poop Hatch' as an inspiration.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - HIGH FIDELITY 23

The bonus disc for High Fidelity Magazine #23 (from 1997) presented a.o. the Omnibus Wind Ensemble performing FZ's 'Inca Roads'.
From the 1995 "Music By Frank Zappa" album by the Omnibus Wind Ensemble.
Very nice.

MARCO PACASSONI GROUP - FRANK & RUTH

"Frank & Ruth" is a beautiful Frank Zappa tribute album by the Marco Pacassoni Group.
Well, not just a tribute to the music of Frank Zappa, but also to the musicianship of Ruth Underwood.

8 tracks, plus a 'Stolen Moments' (O.Nelson) bonus.

Superb.
And it comes in a gorgeous package.
Artwork by Sebastian Comelli !!

Available from Amazon, iTunes, Spotify, but also on CD.

41POINT9

from Glass Onyon PR

Prog ensemble 41POINT9 is premiering their second video titled “These Four Lands” from their forthcoming album “Mr. Astute Trousers” on Sonic Perspectives! The band has two albums being released internationally on September 21, 2018. One is the brand-new sophomore release “Mr. Astute Trousers” and the other is a remixed and remastered version of their debut album “Still Looking For Answers.” The band has been busy creating a series of high quality concept videos to help get word about the album out.

THE RUDY SCHWARTZ PROJECT - DON'T GET CHARRED... GET PUFFY!

Released in 1992 on the Musical Tragedies record label (from Germany, remember them?).
Re-issued in 2012 with a different album cover on the DC-Jam record label as a CD and as a download.
And finally re-released a couple of weeks ago as a CDR by DC-Jam / Kunaki.

If you need one album by The Rudy Schwartz Project (and you do, believe me), this is it.

Not only does it include quite a lot of weird and catchy tunes, the album also presents one of the best coverversions of a Frank Zappa composition that I have ever heard.

Here's Zappa's 1988-version :

VARIOUS ARTISTS - AUDIO CD-7

Audio Magazine (from Greece) used to include a free CD with the magazine.
I don't know if they still do this. I don't even know if the magazine still exist, but the person who compiled these little albums (in 1995 !)  did have a good taste in music.

CD number 7, from the April 1995 issue, included Harmonia's 'Barking Playful Sandwich' which is a mix of 'T'Mershi Duween' (F.Zappa), 'Igor's Boogie, Phase Four (O.Odori), 'Aerobics In Bondage' (F.Zappa) and 'Lumpy Gravy' (F.Zappa)

Originally issued on the "Harmonia Plays Zappa" album (from 1994).

Here's the Harmonia Ensemble live, in 2010, with their adaption of 'Alien Orifice'.

COL.BRUCE HAMPTON

Col. Bruce Hampton

THE RUDY SCHWARTZ PROJECT - POSTAL CODE FOR HAM

The brand-new album by The Rudy Schwartz Project !!
"Postal Code For Ham".
It's crazy. It's from the other side of the fence.

You need this !

DJ Z-TRIP

I knew that DJ Z-Trip's 'Rockstar', on which he samples FZ, could be found on the "Return Of The DJ - Volume Two" album, but the track also got released on "History Of The Hip Hop DJ - Volume Six"...

Are You Hung Up ?

VARIOUS ARTISTS - THE HISTORY OF NORTHWEST ROCK VOLUME TWO

This fine compilation album (from 1978) includes The Sonics performing Frank Zappa's 'Any Way The Wind Blows'. The Sonics originally released this track on 7" in 1967.

LLOYD MILLER AND THE HELIOCENTRICS

The psychedelics of The Heliocentrics meets the oriental jazz of Salt Lake City’s Lloyd Miller on a new collaboration album. Turbulent sessions threw up some inspired fusions of spiritual jazz, Arabic modes and Balinese instrumentation.
