PAZOP

Pazop was a Belgian progressive rock band that existed from 1971 to 1974.
The band recorded two album, but didn't manage to get them released by a record company.

Their first album, "Psychillis Of A Lunatic Genius", finally got a release on the Musea label in 1996.
More recently the French Replica Records label released both albums.

Here's a teaser (or two)

-

BENT KNEE - SAY SO

  • bent knee: say so
        (2016, cd, usa, cuneiform records)
Boston-based band Bent Knee has just released their third album. It's their first release on the Cuneiform Records label.
The band has a very friendly sound. It's a nice mix of pop and rock. However, a closer listening does reveal a sharper edge.

Adventurous and experimental.
This is nice. This is very nice.

D.F.A. - WORK IN PROGRESS LIVE

  • d.f.a.: work in progress live
        (2001, cd, usa, moonjune records)
As the MoonJune Records label recently offered this album as a free download (to celebrate its 15th anniversary), I'm happy to give this excellent album another listen.

Here's the info from the MoonJune Records website :

This live album documents D.F.A.'s stellar performance at NEARfest 2000. It most certainly marked the beginning of a new, exciting phase in the band's career, and was their first major exposure outside the confines of their native Europe. (D.F.A. is from Italy, a country with a rich progressive music history.)

It was early afternoon on June 17th, 2000, when D.F.A. took the stage for their first-ever live performance in the USA. Many among the large audience of progressive music enthusiasts at NEARfest were obviously unfamiliar with the Italian band and their music, but as the show progressed it became evident that history was in the making. Each successive song was greeted with a bigger roar of applause, and D.F.A. were becoming instant stars on the international progressive music scene. It was a spellbinding performance at a breakthrough event in the history of the group.

Recorded with crystal clarity, this is an exceptional recording of a very special live performance. Full of excitement, surprises and superb playing, Work In Progress Live is one album that's not to be missed by any fan of progressive music.

Here's a track from one of their later albums :

SANDRO, JOHN MALKOVICH, ERIC ALEXANDRAKIS - LIKE A PUPPET SHOW

A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned the "Illuminated" 12" picture disc vinyl album that got released by the same artists, as a limited edition, pre-order only album.
"Illuminated" included four tracks, three of which had been previously released on "Like A Puppet show. One of these three tracks was composed by Dweezil Zappa.
Hence, the Dweezil Zappa composition can also be found on "Like A Puppet Show".

"Like A Puppet Show" also was a limited edition release.
As this is more of an art project than just a music album (Sandro Miller is a photographer and John Malkovich an actor), it should come as no surprise that this is also a limited release (2000 copies) and a set 2 two 12" picture discs.

Here are some pictures :

REZ ABBASI & JUNCTION - BEHIND THE VIBRATION

  • rez abbasi & junction: behind the vibration
        (2016, cd, usa, cuneiform)
Cuneiform Recods has just released American jazz guitarist Rez Abbasi's latest album, "Behind The Vibration".
Next to Rez Abbasi, the album features Mark Shim on tenor sax and electronic MIDI Wind Controller, Ben Stivers on keyboards and Kenny Gohowski on drums.
"Behind The Vibration" presents 8 original pieces, all composed by Rez Abbasi. A beautiful equilibrium of modern electronic jazz, fusion, and progressive rock.

Impressive.

MIKE KENEALLY'S "SCAMBOT 2"

a message from Mike Keneally

Exclusive Scambot 2 pre-orders start now!

Kind folk! Hi! Hear ye!

The time has come, friends…we are now grinningly accepting pre-orders for the 2-CD special edition of Scambot 2.

Yes!

17 years in the making (I'm serious!), this signed, numbered limited edition of 2000 features two distinct albums for your ears.

Disc 1 is Scambot 2 proper, consisting of the following:

SCAMBOT 2

1. In The Trees (10:28)
2. Roots Twist (3:02)
3. Sam (3:20)
4. Clipper (4:36)
5. Forget About It (0:46)
6. Pretzels (4:25)
7. Buzz (4:32)
8. Race The Stars (3:44)
9. O (1:26)
10. Roll (6:23)
11. Constructed (3:46)
12. Freezer Burn (5:23)
13. Scores of People (5:22)
14. Cold Hands Gnat (4:00)
15. Proceed (3:19)

Disc 2 is a whole other freaking album, called Inkling (More From The Scambot 2 Sessions). It contains these things:

INKLING (More from the Scambot 2 Sessions)

1. Presence (0:48)
2. Scambot (2:17)
3. Boghe (4:01)
4. Sickness (2:01)
5. The Coma (2:11)
6. I Named You (0:45)
7. Falafel (1:29)
8. O Elastic Love! (1:23)
9. Cram (8:10)
10. Mystery Song (0:04)
11. E (0:37)
12. The Scorpions (5:32)
13. Skating Backwards (2:15)
14. Tom (7:01)
15. Mayday! (1:25)
16. Lovesong (1:27)
17. Back It Up (2:54)
18. Inkling (1:37)
19. Uncompressed Rag (2:04)

One hour and 53 minutes of music altogether.

Both albums are handsomely contained within a frequently blue package, with many absurd drawings and a lengthy story continuing the epic tale of Scambot and the other humans, animals and deities in his life. There's a 24-page booklet for Scambot 2, and an additional 8-page booklet for Inkling, both nestled within the attractive digipak.

Exowax will begin shipping the CDs in late July. But once your pre-order is processed, you will receive an advance download of Scambot 2 proper, to begin listening to at any moment you care to begin listening to it. No waiting for you, intrepid pre-orderer!

(For any non-physical-product people out there, Scambot 2 proper will also be available as a purchasable single-album download, with digital booklet, in late July. Inkling [More From The Scambot 2 Sessions] will not be available for download though – this album is exclusively available only as Disc 2 of the 2-CD edition.)

How to describe the music? Well, Scambot 1 was a dense, mostly instrumental and pretty darn abstract listen, so Scambot 2 may take you by surprise with its more melodic and accessible (for me, anyway) nature. I really wanted to write a bunch of songs, as opposed to compose a bunch of pieces, and that's what happened. From the multi-movement epic "In The Trees" to the rocking "Roots Twist" and "Roll" to the lilting "Sam" to the twangy "Constructed" to the proggity "Buzz" and "Clipper" to the… well I'll stop describing the songs, you'll hear them soon enough I hope.

Most of the more abstract instrumental music we worked on during this time has gone into Inkling, which really hangs together as an album in its own right, and also contains a few conventionally melodic songs alongside blazing madness and crazy space music and pseudo-ragtime and other things.

If I may so say, I am really freaking happy with both of these albums. Happy enough to italicize!

Scambot 2 has been a long time coming. We're grateful indeed for your patience, and we hope that you'll find your patience rewarded by this music.

And now, in the words of TV's Richard Deacon, sit back, relax, and pre-order Scambot 2 now!

Thank you - we very much dig you -
Mike

MAKE WEIRD MUSIC INTERVIEWS HOMER FLYNN

WOWIE ZOWIE !!!

Anthony (from Make Weird Music) interviews Homer Flynn (of The Residents).
Very nice.
Wanted to fly over and shake Anthony's hand.
Unfortunately, it didn't fit the planning as I still have this stack of music that I need to hear  :-(

Anyway, nice interview. Anthony doesn't go for the easy questions and Homer takes the time to reflect. Like it. Like it a lot.

http://www.makeweirdmusic.com/interview/homer-flynn/

During the interview, when asked what music he is listening to, Homer mentions Alamaailman Vasarat.
Saw them at the Zappanale festival in 2008.
Check them out.

ZFT

Bob Zappa :

It is difficult to understand or even explain the events that brought about the ZFT issues between Frank's children. If you're interested in trying to sort this out listen to Marc Maron's interview with Dweezil that was broadcast today on Marc's WTF pod cast. And then read the article by Kannii Powell Cleaver. That's how the pieces of the puzzle will fall into place.

JAGATARA - JAGATARA 1993.2.7

Japanese rock / funk band Jagatara was formed in 1979 by Edo Akemi.
After Edo Akemi's dead in 1990, the band broke up.

For years, I've had an mp3 of Jagatara performing Frank Zappa's 'Black Napkins'. On one of my recent searches, I did find the data of an album that included Jagatara performing Zappa's 'Peaches III'. No 'Black Napkins', but the info said that it included 'Peaches III'.

Imagine my surprise when I popped the CD in the CD-player to discover that after a couple of minutes into the first track, called 'Landscape', the band starts performing FZ's 'The Black Page'.
And, yes, it does includes a fine version of 'Peaches III' as well.

A great find, even if I say so myself, and an excellent addition to The Others Of Invention.

ALTERTAPE - GLASSTIC DROPS

Earlier this year, Altertape released their second album, "Nandrin Sessions". As I was quite impressed, I absolutely wanted to hear its predecessor as well.

It was a good decision.
Jonathan Callens on drums and keyboards (and compositions), Joshua Dellaert on electric bass and Jan Ghesquière on electric guitar.
"Glasstic Drops" is the perfect soundtrack for my Sundays.
Cinematic.
Melodic soundscapes.
Relaxing and exciting at the same time.

Out on Ijskasteel, available from Solidude Records :

THE MARRIED MONK - THE BELGIAN KICK

Originally released on CD in 2004 (also as a cardboard promo) and more recently re-released on vinyl : The Married Monk with "The Belgian Kick".
The album includes a coverversion of Don Van Vliet's 'Observatory Crest'.

Data has been added to the United Mutations Archives.

PRITSKER / JARVIS DUO - S/T

The latest release on de Composers Concordance Records label focusses on Gene Pristsker and Peter Jarvis. The duo, with Gene Pritsker on guitar and Peter Jarvis on drums, performs six compositions. The first two pieces on the album were written by respectively Peter Jarvis and Gene Pritsker. The other four pieces are by David Saperstein, Joseph Pehrson, Jessica Wells and Daniel Palkowski.

This music is not intended for the faint of heart.
Electric guitar plus drums.
Complex. Contemporary. Experimental rock.

This one will ask for you complete attention.
Once you've put this disc in your cd-player, there's no escape possible.

I love it.

http://www.composersconcordance.com/

SKORDATURA PE - EMPTY THE HEADBIN

The Skordature Punkjazz Ensemble has a new album out.
If my memory serves me right, listening to their first album made me write: "The quartet brings a raw and unbridled mix of fusion, jazz and rock."
I am happy to say that this is also true for "Empty The Headbin", the band's second release.

The album presents 10 pieces, composed by the various members of the quartet, Jakob Haghebaert (guitar), Thomas Vanhauwaert (keys), Joshua Dellaert (bass) and Sebastiaan Vekeman (drums).

Skordatura EP continues where it left off with "How To Chase A Minute In One Second". The band has definitely found its typical sound and explores it with pleasure. As do I.
I like the combination of the electronic sounds against the melody lines. I like the odd meters. I like "Empty The Headbin".

Released on and available from Solidude Records.

Here's the rehearsal of 'Kitten The Dog', a composition by Joshua Dellaert.

OZ NOY AND WARREN HAYNES

From "Twisted Blues Vol.2"

OZ NOY - WHO GIVES A FUNK

Guitar player and composer Oz Noy is best known for his incredible guitar techniques. He has various books and DVDs out explaining how to play guitar.
He also releases a record from time to time.

Oz Noy's latest album is entitled "Who Gives A Funk" and it features some original compositions next to some standards / classics.
Every (or almost every) track has a guest musician. Randy Brecker is featured on the Charles Mingus 'Better Get It In Your Soul'. Dweezil Zappa is featured on 'Damn, This Groove", written by Oz Noy.

'Damn, This Groove', 2nd guitar solo by Dweezil Zappa.

JACK DUPON - DEMON HARDI

While I'm at it, I added the data for the third album by Jack Dupon, "Démon Hardi", to the United Mutations Archives.

Here's the band at Zappanale in 2012 :

JACK DUPON - L'ECHELLE DU DESIR

French band Jack Dupon has been around since 2004. They released their first album in 2006 (privately released) and their second album on Gazul Records in 2008.
First time that I heard about them, was when I read the line-up for the 2012 edition of the Zappanale festival. They had performed at the RIO Festival in 2011.

Jack Dupon is Arnaud M'Doihoma (bass, vocals), Thomas Larsen (drums, vocals), Gregory Pozzoli (guitar, vocals) and Philippe Prebet (guitar, vocals).

Guitar oriented avant prog.
"L'échelle du Désir" was their debut album. It opened with a 30-minute 'La Trilogie Des Mouces...'.

Data has been added to the United Mutations Archives.

Here's the band at the RIO festival in 2011 :

SAVOLDELLI, CASARANO, BARDOSCIA - THE GREAT JAZZ GIG IN THE SKY

Italian vocalist Boris Savoldelli teamed up with saxophone player Raffaele Casarano and double bass player Marco Bardoscia to redo, to re-imagine one of the most sacred rock albums of all times: Pink Floyd's "The Dark Side Of The Moon".

The result is quite impressive.
"The Great Jazz Gig In The Sky" is an appropriate title as the trio does indeed take a jazz approach in redefining some classic Pink Floyd tunes.
Boris Savoldelli does a great job with the vocal work, but I'm as impressed by Raffaele Casarano and Marco Bardoscia.
Track number 6, 'Us And Them", needs a special mention as it features guitar maestro Dewa Budjana adding some beautiful guitar sounds.

Nice.
Very nice.

Out on MoonJune Records.

Here's the trio in concert, performing one of the pieces of this album.

LOW YO YO STUFF

After 8 years of being the artistic director at the NTT (dutch theater group from Groningen), Ola Maffalani will be succeeded by Guy Weizman.
To celebrate the 8 years with Ola, the NTT will perform highlights from the previous seasons.

One of these highlights was "Some Yo Yo Stuff", a play by Ko van den Bosch, performed by actor and singer Frank Lammers and a selection of Dutch musicians.

Originally performed in Groningen in 2010 and later in Amsterdam, in Eindhoven and at the Lowlands Festival.

The musicians :
  • Wouter Planteijdt - guitar (Sjako, Corrie en de Brokken)
  • Dolf Planteijdt - bass (Morzel Pronk)
  • Joost Buis - trombone, lap steel, harmonica  (Astronotes, Corrie en de Brokken, Vanbinsbergen Playstation)
  • René 'Tres Manos' van Barneveld - guitar (Urban Dance Squad)
  • Richard Hijerman - drums  (Morzel Pronk, Sjako)
This new performance will take place on :
December 5, 2016, at the Stadsschouwburg in Groningen NL.

And there will also be a concert at De Effenaar in Eindhoven, NL on December 4.

THE RUDY SCHWARTZ PROJECT - THEY SAVED GRANDPA'S GAUZE

Last week, I received the brand-new album by The Rudy Schwartz Project.
Those of you who think of The RSP a fun project by Joe Newman, or as a pastiche polka puzzle with strange lyrics, will be pleasantly surprised by this latest release.

Musicwise, "They Saved Grandpa's Gauze" sounds great. Actually, it sounds amazing.
There's a bunch of superb sounding songs on this disc. The music does still contain all the weird little sounds and instrumentation that one expects when playing a disc by The Rudy Schwartz Project, but for some reason or another, it sounds richer, more developed and more detailed than RSP's previous releases.

Beautiful music, combined with hilarious lyrics.
This is great.

Highly recommended !!
Available on iTunes, Amazon, etceteras.

Here's 'Moist Towelettes", with vocals by David Morrison !!

And 'My Pal Foot Foot' (written byDot Wiggin).

JACK DUPON - JESUS L'AVENTURIER

For those of you who are unfamiliar with French avant prog band Jack Dupon, "Jésus L'aventurier", their fifth release, would be a great place to start.
This is progressive rock, but with quite a dose of avant-garde weirdness mixed in.

Although mostly instrumental, "Jésus L'avonturier" is all about adventurous people: Mata Hari, Ulysses,... (all explained in the poster that comes with the album).
And the music is great.

Data has been added to the United Mutations Archives.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - HAM SESSIONS 2013

A couple of weeks ago, we went to the Ham Sessions festival in Ghent (BE). An afternoon festival with three bands. First band on stage was Sinister Sister (performing the music of Frank Zappa), and the evening closed with a concert by the Flat Earth Society (with their Zappa tribute).
I guess that I don't have to explain that this was amazing. And it all took place in Michel Mast's back-yard. Literally speaking.
This was day one. There'll be another afternoon in September...

These Ham Sessions have been going on for quite a couple of years and since 2013 a sampler with recordings of the festival is being produced.
"Ham Sessions 2013" presents live recordings of all the bands that participated : Black Flower, W.O.F.O., Nordmann, Synaesthetic Trip, Talking Cows, Sweet Defeat and Shakara United.

WRENCH - BLACK HOLIDAY

About 15 years ago, I received a Japanese CD sampler from Fred Tomsett. The album was entitled "Japanase Homegrown - Hardcore Punk and Junk Volume 1" and it included a band called Wrench, performing Zappa's 'I'm So Cute'.
It was only a couple of months ago that I learned that this piece by Wrench had been taken from an LP that they had released a couple of years earlier.

A fine addition to The Others Of Invention.

DAVE PIKE SET - AT STUDIO 2

Dave Pike's quartet had Frank Zappa's 'Mother People' on their setlist in the late sixties / early seventies. It even got released on their excellent "Noisy Silence - Gentle Noise" album in 1969.

This recent "At Studio 2" release, has the recordings from a concert from March 1971 in Cologne (DE).
It includes a superb 18-minutes of 'Mother People'. Arranged by guitarist Volker Kriegel.

BESTIAAL - ABSOLUUT

Bestiaal is drummer and composer Sebastiaan Vekeman, guitar player Jakob Haghebaert and double bass player Sebastiaan Gommeren.
"Absoluut" is their first album. It's out on Solidude Records.
The disc presents 10 tracks and although I don't have a clue to what the titles refer to, I do have the impression that there is a certain chronology, that there's a story being told.

I love the variety on "Absoluut". Certain pieces are slow, searching and almost hesitant. While others are fierce and turbulent.

Raw and unbridled jazz.
Beautiful compositions in a fine looking package !

Definitely something to check out.

SANDRO, JOHN MALKOVICH, ERIC ALEXANDRAKIS - ILLUMINATED

Earlier this year, the Cryogenia label release a 12" vinyl picture disc entitled "Illuminated".
It was a so-called limited edition pre-order only release. 1500 copies were made (but you can still find a copy if you want to).

It presented four tracks. Three of which were already released on the "Like A Puppet Show" album in 2015.
The "Like A Puppet Show" was quite a project. Photographer Sandro Miller, actor and voice John Malkovich and musician Eric Alexandrakis invited a number of guest to co-write and to mix the music.

One of the tracks was written by Dweezil Zappa, 'Cryozolon X'. You might know it from Dweezil's latest album where it's called 'Malkovich'.

ÖZ ÜRÜGÜLÜ - FASHION AND WELFARE

August 2014, Öz Ürügülü performed at the Zapperlot festival in Switzerland. It was my first encounter with the band. Glad that I was there.
Öz Ürügülü did a great job, played a fine concert. I remember buying their first album, "Forgotten Archives" (released in 2012), and enjoying it a lot.

We're a couple of years later now, and Öz Ürügülü has just released their second album.
"Fashion And Welfare".
To sum it up in a couple of words, this is a great album. It hit my mailbox the day before yesterday and I've been playing it (almost) non-stop since then.
Odd meters, crazy rhythms, progressive rock, melodic guitar lines, eastern influences and a rather particular instrumentation (including sitar and kaz).

All the compositions have these funny names like 'Android Moustache', 'Odd Waltz' or 'I Am The Fungus'. I love it.
With this music, when I close my eyes, I see bearded, long-haired men dancing with beautiful women. Like a scene drawn by Hugo Pratt, straight out of Corto Maltese. Fabulous.
This is great.
Did I tell you that I love it?

You need to hear this.

Here's Karl King in an attempt to promote the album. Buy it from his shop !!

And here's 'Odd Waltz'. Live. A studio recording of the song can be found on "Fashion And Welfare".
