THE RESIDENTS - FOR THE BENEFIT OF MR. KITE

This was London Sinfonietta playing "Remembering The Beatles", a tribute to the Sgt. Pepper's album. For each song they had a different guest singing or playing.
The Residents sung and "played" on "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite", whereas other songs featured Peter Murphy, Marianne Faithfull, Beth Orton and Jarvis Cocker. It all happend in Milan, Italy, on the 21st September 2007.

CHARLES BOBUCK - MISSING SOLDIERS

  • charles bobuck: missing soldiers - the favorite songs of clara barton
        (2016, cd, austria, klanggalerie gg236)
I somehow missed mentioning one of the previous Charles Bobuck albums.
"Missing Soldiers" is an abandoned Residents project. It never went beyond the basic MIDI files. I find it quite interesting as all the instruments (and vocals) are presented here as MIDI sound files.

The Klanggalerie record label adds:
Re-issue of a previously download only compilation through the Charles Bobuck web page. The third TOOK release and therefore limited to 300 copies and available only through our mail order. These MIDI arrangements started out in 2001 as sketches for a proposed album based on The American Civil War by The Residents. The rather un-sexy project did not get encouragement from European partners because the war meant little outside of the United States and is most prominently a part of history in the deep South. The project was abandoned.

Still available at Klanggalerie.

THE UNIVERSE BY EAR - S/T

Being the melomaniac that I am, I'm always on the look-out for bands that perform the music of, or that are influenced by the music of my musical heroes : Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart or The Residents.

Years ago, this quest brought me to Arf, a Swiss trio that featured Stefan Strittmatter on the guitar. I had seen the trio perform at the Zappanale festival in 2004 and was blown-away. The trio released four excellent albums but called it quits in 2012.

The very same Stefan Strittmatter had crossed my path again when I received the first album by Fido Plays Zappa, a Basel-based Swiss band that, as the name predicts, perfoms the music of Frank Zappa. The ensemble features Pascal Grünenfelder on bass.
The Fido sextet (or tentet when you count the horns) does a superb job. I saw them live in Germany and in Switzerland and they convinced on both occasions. They're touring Germany and The Netherlands at this very moment, I hope to see them in action again real soon.

Anyway, when I found out that Pascal Grünenfelder and Stefan Strittmatter had joined forces with Beni Bürgin to form Universe By Ear, I knew that I had to check them out.
Six months ago, the trio had already released 'Seven Pounds' as some sort of appetizer. I was impressed and very curious to hear their album.
This brand-new eponymous debut release arrived last week and is excellent.

The Universe By Ear plays energetic, contemporary guitar-oriented rock music. They have a very distinct, very recognisable sound, mixing prog and experimental influences in their rock sound. I love it.
Just take a listen to the below samples !

Available from Czar Of Crickets.

WIZARDS OF TWIDDLY - MAN MADE SELF

Two years after their debut, Wizards Of Twiddly released "Man Made Self".
More madness. More crazy music.
Carl Bowry on the guitar.
Data has been added to the United Mutations Archives.

THE RUBINOOS - ONE, TWO, THAT'S IT!

Although American pop band The Rubinoos started out in 1970, they sound a band from the early 1960's.
"One, Two, That's It'" is subtitled "another crimes & unreleased". It includes the band performing a nice pop version of Frank Zappa's 'Absolutley Free'.

Liner notes by Tommy Dunbar :
'Jon and I used to listen to "We're Only In It For The Money" by Frank Zappa and The Mothers Of Invention every day after school. My dad came in one day, took a look at the album cover and proclaimed, "that's the ugliest person I've ever seen!". Always wondered which guy in the band he was talking about!
Anyway, we still want to do a recording of the whole album a capella someday...'

PHISH - MADISON SQUARE GARDEN DEC 29, 2016

Phish performed Frank Zappa's 'Peaches En Regalia' during one of their New Year's Eve shows last December. All of the shows were made available as digital download, and also on CD (for the old folks).
I recently received my copy (and, yes, I was starting to get worried...) and it looks and sounds fabulous.

OK, so maybe it's not their best performance of 'Peaches' but they did play it.
A beautiful tribute.
And what a concert...

VARIOUS ARTISTS - QUANTUM WAMPUMP PRESENTS A TRIBUTE TO THE RESIDENTS

I'm guessing that I've mentioned this release before when I got directed to it, but since I received the cassette last week, I'm happy to give it another mention (and at least one other listening session).

The bandcamp page:
https://quantumwampum.bandcamp.com/album/015-quantum-wampum-presents-a-tribute-to-the-residents

This is a great selection of Residents tunes, performed by the likes of Parlay Droner, Doko Penzo, Native Mode, Skybattle, Frank Hurricane, and a lot of others.
I don't know if these are all artists from the Quantum Wampum label. Don't have a clue if these tracks were recorded especially for this compilation, but they sound great !!

Give it a listen !!

WIZARDS OF TWIDDLY - INDEPENDENT LEGS

Recent babbling about the upcoming Muffin Men tour and shelving some otherWizards (Of Ooze), made me go for the Wizards Of Twiddly earlier this week.
I first heard about the Wizards Of Twiddly when four of them joined Roddie Gilliard to keep The Muffin Men on the road. Must have been around 2000.

"Independent Legs" was the first album by Liverpool-based Wizards Of Twiddly. A remarkable debut that mixes Canterbury prog rock with jazz, with lots of zappa-esque twists and turns.

Very energetic.
Data has been added to the United Mutations Archives.

DON PRESTON - BERKLEE COLLEGE OF MUSIC PRESENTS DON PRESTON CLINIC

Ten years ago, former Mother Of Invention, Moog-pioneer and jazz and rock musician and composer Don Preston did a clinic at the Berklee College Of Music.
At the time, the lecture got recorded.
A couple of weeks ago, Don made this recording available on DVDR (in a nice package, see picture above).

As for the recording, it's not a multi-camera, professionally shot recording, but it's pretty decent. Image quality is great and the sound is excellent as well.
The lecture itself is great. Don talks about the approach to composing. How he does it and how other composers that he worked with did it.
Great stuff.
While lecturing, Don gives examples on the piano and on the moog, performing some original material, plus some pieces or parts of pieces by Carla Bley, John Cage and Frank Zappa.
This is superb.

Thank you, Don, for making this available.

BOBUCK - EGGS FOR BREAKFAST

  • bobuck: eggs for breakfast
        (2017, cd, austria, klanggalerie gg240)
Since Charles Bobuck seperated himself from The Residents, he has been posting tracks for various occasions on various locations.
These tracks have been collected and are being released on the Klanggalerie label.

From Klanggalerie:
Over the past few months, former Residents composer Charles Bobuck has released several Tiny Tunes through his website, newsletter and as free giveaways for holidays. We are now happy to present you the first collection of these songs on CD. Eggs For Breakfast collects 26 of these tunes, perfect little pop songs about important and unimportant things, with playful joy or rather melancholy. All songs composed and performed by Bobuck, and yes, all vocals, too.

Track list: 1. Headstand 2. Truck 3. War 4. General 5. Smoke 6. Pupil 7. Saw 8. Yellow 9. Bag 10. Dali 11. Sing 12. Car 13. Hands 14. Death 15. Lemon 16. Shroud 17. Rug 18. Blue 19. Music 20. Toe 21. Beer 22. Itch 23. Toast 24. Kid 25. Gang 26. Nail.

VIBES AHEAD ALLIANCE - THE BONE

If you've been checking out this blog from time to time, you might have noticed that I'm rather enthousiastic about the upcoming re-release of the Wizards Of Ooze albums. Especially since there will be an extra albums with special mixes, outtakes and the lot.
A couple of these extra tracks might be from "The Bone", a CDEP that got released in 1992. At the time, the Wizards Of Ooze were still called Vibes Ahead Alliance. The band had to change their name due to copyright reasons.
The titletrack, 'The Bone' got re-released on the first Wizards Of Ooze album, but I don't think the other three tracks of this EP appeared on one of the later albums.

Funky acid jazz...
'Cheesy', you say? Well, yes. I wouldn't like it any other way.

THE WRECKING CREW

Apparently, Frank Zappa makes a short appearance in the 2008 movie / documentary "The Wrecking Crew".

The Wrecking Crew is a 2008 American documentary film directed by Denny Tedesco. It covers the story of the Los Angeles-based group of session musicians known as the Wrecking Crew, famed for having played on numerous hit recordings throughout the 1960s. The film premiered at the 2008 South by Southwest Film Festival.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wrecking_Crew_(2008_film)

The movie got a screening on Belgian national tv a little while ago.

ZAPPING

In 2004, Furio Di Castri and Gianluco Petralla released "Under Construcion". The album included their version of Frank Zappa's 'Twenty Small Cigars'.

Also in 2004, Furio Di Castri presented a Zappa tribute called "Zapping". The Zappa tribute took place on 2004/05/10 at the 'Asioli di Correggio' in Parma, Italy. The event was called "Zapping - Jazz is not dead, It just smells funny". It featured Furio Di Castri, Stefano Bollani, Gianluca Petrella, Giorgio Canali, Gianni Maroccolo, Mauro Negri, Pierpaolo Ferroni, Cristiano Della Monica, Peppe Servillo, Giovanni Lindo Ferretti.

I recently received the setlist (thank you Renzo Notari) :

  • The Real FZ I
  • Peaches En Regalia
  • The Real FZ II
  • Little Umbrellas
  • King Kong
  • Figlio di Idiota Bastardo
  • The Real FZ III
  • Twenty Small Cigars
  • The Black Page
  • Let’s Move To Cleveland
  • Didja Get Any Onya p.1
  • The Real FZ IV
  • Didja Get Any Onya p. 2
  • Eat That Question
  • America Drinks and Goes Home
  • The Real FZ V
  • Didja Get Any Onya p.3 - America Drinks and Goes Home? Reprise
  • Willie the Pimp
  • Peaches En Regalia Reprise

where "The Real FZ" shots were Lindo Ferretti reading selected passages from The Real Frank Zappa Book.

2008 saw the release of the "Zapping" album :

PEARLY CLOUDS - S/T

On one of his latest musical adventures, Gary Lucas teamed up with Hungarian vocalist Enikő Szabó and Serbian saxophonist Tóni Dezső. The resulting ensemble was baptised Pearly Clouds and the trio recently released their first album.
This is beautiful.

"Pearly Clouds" mixes Hungarian folk with the blues and with psychedelic influences.
The result is indefinable but Gary Lucas' guitar playing is instantly recognizable.
It sounds great.

RACHEL FLOWERS

I guess most of you have seen YouTube videos of Rachel Flowers performing Frank Zappa compositions. Maybe you also saw some where she performed with Dweezil Zappa's ZpZ band.

In the meantime, November 2016, Rachel has released her first solo album, "Listen".

And later this year, a documentary film about Rachel will be released.
(and, yes, that's Dweezil Zappa)

The film should be released on DVD, and a soundtrack has been announced as well.
Let's keep an eye out for it !
I hope it features some of the moments that you can see here :

-

JANE BOXALL - ZERO TO EIGHT MALLETS

Jane Boxall's 2012 album, "Zero To Eight Mallets" combines technical skills with an excellent repertoire. Next to one original piece and Frank Zappa's 'The Black Page', the album offers performances of pieces by a number of composers that I had never heard of. And there's some great stuff to be discovered !

Frank Zappa's 'The Black Page' is performed on the marimba.
As Jane explains in the liner notes, the piece was originally written for drum-kit and melodic percussion.
While "Zero To Eight Mallets" has the piece performed on the marimba, the below video shows Jane playing the drums to the marimba part.

PETER TORK - STRANGER THINGS HAVE HAPPENED

Peter Tork (as in The Monkees' Peter Tork) made his first solo album in 1994.
He starts the liner notes saying : "For starters, we got Darren Elpant to bring his electronic drum pads in, and got Tommy Mars on the keyboard."

Mostly pop / rock, "Stranger Things Have Happened" is a nice album. I like it. Adrian Belew and David Bowie come to mind.

Universe By Ear's first album will be released on March 24, 2017.
I got the opportunity to give the album an early listening session and I'm totally amazed.

Album to be released on the Czar Of Revelations label.
More info soon.

WIZARDS OF OOZE - BAMBEE!

In 1996, the Wizards Of Ooze released their second album.
Eclectic, zappa-esque acid jazz.
Does that make sense ?
Featuring Marie Daulne and Sabine Kabongo (of Zap Mama) on vocals.

RUTH'S REFRIGERATOR

A message from Alan Jenkins :

There's a new edition of the first album by Ruth's Refrigerator, "Suddenly a Disfigured Head Parachuted", which has been out of print for 26 years. This new version (a CD in a gate-fold cardboard cover) has been remixed from the original multi-track tapes and sounds better than the 1990 version. Quick, go to the record shop at Cordelia Records and buy one.

CHAD WACKERMAN

As Steve Gadd is unavailable for James Taylor's upcoming concerts, Chad Wackerman will fill in for Steve until February 14.

This means that James Taylor's band is featuring three former Zappa bandmembers (Walt Fowler, Lou Marini and Chad Wackerman) the next couple of gigs.
Wonder if they'll be talking about their former employer backstage?

CHILLI WILLI AND THE RED HOT PEPPERS

Yes, Chilli Willi And The Red Hot Peppers.
Snakefinger's band.

Press note for the soon to be released 2CD anthology, "Real Sharp" :

When it came to recording their first LP "Chilli Willi and the Red Hot Peppers - Kings Of The Robot Rhythm" in 1972, duo Martin Stone and Philip Lithman asked various members of Brinsley Schwarz (Nick Lowe, Billy Rankin and Bob Andrews) to join them just for the sessions.

The result led the pair to recruit a bushel of full-time Red Hot Peppers in the form of Paul "Diceman" Bailey, Paul "Bassman" Riley and Pete Thomas to hit the road.Incredibly, not even the ensuing 400 gigs in two years and the release of a second album Bongos Over Balham by the expanded line-up, was enough to sustain the enterprise. Arguably, at their peak after the Naughty Rhythms Tour of 1975, (with other British "pub rock" groups, Kokomo and Dr. Feelgood), the band broke up.

In 1974, Zig Zag editor Andy Childs wrote "The number of English bands who are currently performing and perfecting the many eclectic styles of American music can be counted on the thumb of one hand…they are Chilli Willi and the Red Hot Peppers. To see them live is an experience. Their music melts your heart, invites you to dance and sing along, and when it's all over, you feel a rush of energy and exhilaration pulsing through your blood…like you don't quite believe what you've heard or seen, so come back and shout for more and you come back and see them again and again.” "REAL SHARP" is a thrilling two CD anthology from the epicentre of pub rock, packed tight with rare and original recordings plus twenty-four pages of antics and Barney Bubbles artwork – and still only for the price of a pint and a packet of fags. This collection is dedicated to the memory of Martin Stone, Phil Lithman and Barney Bubbles.
