Djam Karet is one of those bands that have existed for as long as I can remember.
It had been quite a while since I had played one of their albums, so I was quite happy to be able to give their most recent release a listen.

Instrumental spacey progressive soundscapes.

As a Halloween suprise, Dweezil Zappa sent out a recording of 'Zomby Woof' to his Reward Music Platform subscribers.
Recorded in concert in London by the Zappa Plays Zappa band with the Norwegian Wind Ensemble. In 2019.

FRANK ZAPPA - BREST 1979 VOLUME ONE AND TWO

The Parachute Recordings record label recently released two more Zappa radio show albums. Well, 'recently' might be a bit of a rough estimate as both albums got released in 2020.
Anyway, the 100 minute soundboard recording of the Brest 1979 concert that is circulating among concert tape traders (and that can be found on Zappateers !) has been put on one two LP set plus on  one single LP, aptly called "Volume One" and "Volume Two".

Florida-based blues guitar player Tommy McCoy recorded FZ’s ‘Cosmik Debris’ and released it on his “Coast To Coast Jump” album.

During an interview, Tommy added:
“I love Frank Zappa,” McCoy said. “I’ve always wanted to do one of his his songs. ‘Cosmik Debris’ is one of my favorites. It’s bluesy and it has that tempo change. I hadn’t planned on doing it, but when I found out Rick Estrin was willing to do the session, this was my chance.”

I only have a digital download of this album. Still looking for the CD...

Canadian rock band White Cowbell Oklahoma released a live version of FZ’s ‘Magic Fingers’ on their “Mixto Sixto” album, a digipack CD release on the Slick Money record label.
Another live version had previously been released on their “Viva Live Locos - Alive At The Burg Herzberg Festival” in 2011.

The promotional CDR for White Cowbell Oklahoma’s “Mixto Sixto” album, pictured below, came in a fold-out cardboard sleeve. The album cover artwork was different, zooming in at the cowgirl and placing the plectrum on the left. The disc presented the same tracks as the actual album, including the live version of FZ’s ‘Magic Fingers’.

One of the Most Sought-After Krautrock Albums, Twogether’s A Couple of Times, Has Been Re-Released on CD and Digital Platforms – OUT NOW!

Twogether were a German drums and keyboards rock duo from Düsseldorf, formed in 1973 out of musicians previously in The Crew and Blue Squad. They never did many gigs and only existed for a short while after completing their sole self-produced album.

A Couple of Times is a much sought-after rarity among collectors and was released in 1973 and has been unavailable on CD for over a decade.

This 2022 remaster features new liner notes by surviving member Reinhard Fischer and has also been approved by the Klaus Bangert Estate. Two bonus tracks from a non-album single (their only other release) have also been included.

Surviving Twogether member Reinhard Fischer said “We didn't play together long enough for something to develop from it but from the mixture of our individual ideas about music this album came into being, a bit of everything and many opposites.”

THE RESIDENTS - SO LONG SAM 1945 - 2006

So Long Sam (1945-2006) was a one-off performance by The Residents, held at Berkeley Art Museum & Pacific Film Archive on June 4th 2010. It was a work-in-progress version of lead singer Randy Rose's one-man cabaret performance Sam's Enchanted Evening, which Rose performed solo between October 2011 and March 2012. So Long Sam featured re-interpretations of popular hits from the mid-20th century, and told the story of Sam (personified by Rose) and his troubles with romance, his unhealthy sex addiction, and his questions about his sexuality. During the performance Rose and The Residents were accompanied by a small string orchestra. An EP of the same name credited to The Residents, featuring four songs recorded during the June 4th show, was released later that month on the group's Robot Selling Device. The rest has never been made available. Klanggalerie are proud to finally present you the full concert, plus an extra full of demos recorded for the show.

Krautrock fusion band formed 1969 in Göppingen, Germany, with three school friends: Berthold "Bea" Maier (drums), Helmut Krebs (guitar) and Frank Fischer (bass) and later adding winds player "Büdi" Siebert. They were unreleased during their lifetime, with radio sessions only released decades later.

Again, it's the German Long Hair Records label that released a superb radio session by an 'unknown' fusion band.
Their only release.

Fun facts:
- bass player Frank Fischer would later join Pierre Moerlen's Gong
- drummer Berthold Maier started Zomby Woof, a band named after the Frank Zappa composition.

SNARKY PUPPY - - - RL'S

From the latest Snarky Puppy release.

Snarky Puppy's new album Empire Central is a love letter to Dallas and pays homage to the band's early years in the city. It felt like a crime to make a record dedicated to Texas without a Texas shuffle, so Michael League wrote "RL's" with Snarky Puppy drummer, Jason "J.T." Thomas, in mind, which alternates between typical blues/shuffle elements and variations. The full live-in-studio video of “RL’s” is available now.

Frank Zappa's "The Grand Wazoo" and "Waka/Jawak" are getting vinyl re-issues.
Next to the standard black vinyl edition, a coloured vinyl edition will be made available as well.
Both will include a litho.

Stagg was a 1970's German progressive rock band.
They did a session for the SWR radio station in 1974.

The German Long Hair Records label has now made these recordings available on CD and on LP.
It's Stagg's only release, which is hard to believe because this is great stuff.

ZAPPA WAKA/WAZOO BOX OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED

After a couple of temporary and alluring appearances at a couple of on-line record shops, the official notification got launched :

In celebration of half a century of this pioneering phase of Zappa’s peerless career, Zappa Records/UMe will be releasing Waka/Wazoo, a five-disc multi-format box set that features a complete historical rundown of the entire project on December 16th.

The comprehensive 4CD + Blu-Ray Audio set boasts unreleased alternate takes of almost every composition recorded during the album sessions, Vault mix session outtakes and oddities, and also includes the full final show of the 10-piece tour, recorded at the famous Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco on December 15, 1972.

Additionally, the collection includes a set of demos for George Duke’s solo material that Zappa produced and played guitar on during the album recording sessions at Paramount Studios. Although Duke would go on to re-record the compositions for his own albums, the versions with Zappa have never been officially issued until now.

Waka/Wazoo is available to pre-order now and is being previewed with an alternate take of The Grand Wazoo favorite “Cletus Awreetus-Awrightus” from disc 2.

Beautiful repetitive patterns, combined with angelic voices.

SPANISH FLY'S - HOVER

I finally came across the cassette copy of Spanish Fly's "Hover" album.
Czech band from Prague, says Discogs.

My copy looks brand-new, so I'm guessing it's reissue.

It includes a track entitled 'Bobby' which is in fact their version of FZ's 'Bobby Brown'.

The song can also be found on the "Salute Zappa" tribute / compilation CD that was issued in 2003. 

THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION - LIVE 1969

Another radio show album turned up.
"Live 1969" which is known by Zappaphiles as the "Pachuko Hop" bootleg CD, or even as the "Bacon Fat" 2 LP bootleg from about ten years ago.

Even issued by Keyhole in 2017 as "Bacon Fat Live At The Rockpile 1969".

It's one of those shows that has been circulating in the concert trading circuit for many, many years.

TV MANIA - BORED WITH PROZAC AND THE INTERNET?

TV Mania featured Warren Cuccurullo (who was in Zappa's band and later in Duran Duran) and Nick Rhodes (Duran Duran).

The duo released "Bored With Prozac..." in 2013, both as a digital download and on as a 2 LP set.
Ignoring the unofficial CD and CDR releases that were produced, the album has been released on CD for the first time earlier this year.

Next to the "Bored With Prozac..." album, Tape Modern did release a 7-track remix EP CD in 2013. Different mixes / versions of three tracks that had been previously released on "Bored With Prozac...".

This album and the remix EP are completely different from Warren's solo stuff.

According to my list, "Empire Central" is album number 17 for Snarky Puppy.
Recorded live with a small audience featuring three guitarists, four keyboardists, two brass and two reed players, a violinist, multiple percussionists and drummers and band leader Michael League on bass.

Michael League adds:

Empire Central doubles down on Snarky Puppy’s distinctly Southwestern influences, like the blues, hard rock, classic soul, modern gospel, percolating funk, new tech, ever-misunderstood “fusion” and jazz, without sounding derivative. Rather, it conjures from them music that’s fresh and original. League asked his confreres to compose in homage to the town they consider their common ground, and artists from it who’ve changed music history, “especially Black music history,” he asserts (that honor roll includes Erykah Badu, Kirk Franklin, Roy Hargrove, also touching on St. Vincent, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Buddy Miles). Eleven of the bandmates, as well as Michael himself, contributed tunes which were developed and refined over two weeks of rehearsals.

“Snarky Puppy has always been a band that prioritizes the sound of the music,” he says. “On this record there was some collaboration in the writing process but when a song goes to the band and the players start making suggestions or changing things our collective feeling really comes through. The songs ended up being a lot more direct and funkier than those on our previous records. I think it reflects the many moods of the city’s scene.”

DR. JOHN - THINGS HAPPEN THAT WAY
