BIG BAND DEL FORO - QUIET

  • big band del foro: quiet
        (1995, spain, cd, sufre records)
Founded in 1985 by guitarist, composer and band leader Angel Rubio, the Big Band del Foro released "Quiet" in 1995.
The second track on the CD was entitled 'Vals Para Frank Zappa', a jazzy tribute to the music of Frank Zappa.

DICKEY BETTS & GREAT SOUTHERN - THE OFFICIAL BOOTLEG

  • dickey betts & great southern: the official bootleg
        (2007, 2cd, uk, evangeline records)
Dickey Betts was a founding member of the Allman Brothers band. Next to performing and recording with The Allman Brothers, Dickey had several side and solo projects.
It's needless to say that these side and solo project became more important when he got kicked out of The Allman Brothers band because of his alcohol and drug addiction in 2000.

Anyway, the man could play guitar.
"The Official Bootleg" album, subtitled "2006 North American Tour", is a perfect example.
Dickey Betts and band are in fine shape and perform a set of classic tunes.
Jam band galore.

HEATHER ROCHE - PINK NAPKINS

L'ORKESTRE DES PAS PERDUS - TARAPATAPOMM2

  • l'orkestre des pas perdus: tarapatapomm2
        (2021, download / streaming, --, bandcamp)
After having released a demo tape in 1993, the Montréal, Québec-based brass band L’Orkestre Des Pas Perdus released their first album in 1996: “T’Auras Pas Ta Pomme”. Several other albums followed: “Maison Douce Maison” (1998), “Mondo Cuivro” (2003), “Projet 9” (2007), and “L’Âge Du Cuivre” (2011). All on CD.
In 2021, “Tarapatapomm2” got released as a download / streaming released through digital music services such as Bandcamp and iTunes.
Claude St-Jean added:
“Tarapatapomm2” contained some exclusive music which was recorded before our first CD.

The album included L’Orkestre’s arrangement of FZ’s ‘Chunga’s Revenge’.

Extraordinary !!
That's the word that came to mind when I first heard this album a couple of days ago.
An excellent discovery, even if I say so myself.

It just shows that bands that have a Frank Zappa tune on their setlist, or that have recorded a FZ piece on one of their albums are worth investigating.
This is superb !!

Check out this album, and listen to the fine arrangement of 'Chunga's Revenge'.

BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE - IF 60's WERE 90's - YOUTH REMIXES

  • beautiful people: if 60's were 90's - youth remixes
       (2021, cd, uk, gonzo)
In 1992,  British techno-dance group Beautiful People recorded an album based on Jimi Hendrix samples and riffs. One of the pieces ('Feel The Heat') sampled ‘The Stars That Play With Laughing Sam’s Dice’, a track that featured crowd noise by an unidentified group of people (referred to as The Milky Way Express) providing backing vocals, whistles and other sounds, which is said to include Frank Zappa.

“If 60’s Were 90’s” got re-released a couple of times, with different album artwork.

One of these re-issues was entitled "If 60's Were 90's - Youth Remixes".
This one does not include 'Feel The Heat', but presents different mixes of some other tracks.

Get a taste of the 1992 album here:

PIERRE VERVLOESEM - DARK MATTER 5 - DARK MATTER 6

  • pierre vervloesem: dark matter 5 - dark matter 6
        (2023, download / streaming, --, bandcamp)

"Does Pierre Vervloesem release a lot of material".
Yes, he does. He released over ten albums in 2023 alone.

"Does it all have the 'wow' factor".
Probably not. But I like what he does, in all its different musical forms and shapes. And every once in a while, he releases music that will have you raise your eyebrows. "Dark Matter 5 - Dark Matter 6" is such an album.

Cinematographic, narrative.
What a fine journey. Beautiful pieces (and instrumentation) !

Pierre added:
The third and final album about dark matter. We don't know more.
A big thank you to all the scientists of this expedition.
Dark Matter 6 is dedicated to Bill Laswell.

  • Bruno Vansina : saxes
  • Jan Kuiken : cellos
  • Thomas Mayade : trumpets
  • Elie Gouleme : drums
  • Pierre Vervloesem : guitar, bass, vocals, keys, mix and master

Highly recommended !!

THE SUN RA ARKESTRA IN CONCERT

We saw The Sun Ra Arkestra (under the direction of Knoel Scott) in concert at De Singer in Rijkevorsel a couple of days ago.
We were told that Marshall Allen wasn't present on the tour as he would have had to pay extra insurance to get on the plane. Because of his age. (He's 99 years old). Incredible.

But what a show.
Chris Hemingway on saxophone. A name to remember.

The band is doing another couple of shows on the continent, but you'll have to hurry:

  • Sat Oct 28th. Zurich, Switzerland, Zentralwascherei
  • Sun Oct 29th. Luzern, Switzerland, Salquin Concert Hall, University of Luzern
  • Tue Oct 31st. Milano, Italy, Triennale Milano

at De Singer

a recent YouTube video, with Chris Hemingway taking the first solo !!

PRINCE & THE NEW POWER GENERATION - DIAMONDS AND PEARLS DELUXE EDITION

  • prince & the new power generation: diamonds and pearls deluxe edition
        (2023, 7cd+bu-ray, --, warner records)
The re-issue of Prince's 1991 "Diamonds And Pearls" album comes in different shapes.
I went for the 7 CD / blu-ra set, and I this 12" box set does look pretty impressive.
The box houses two books. One is a gigantic hardcover picture book (that also includes the blu-ray), the second folds open to show the 7 CD's, nicely distributed, in pockets. Each album in a separate album cover.

The book looks fine and I'm sure I'll browse through it later, but I went straight for the audio CD's.

A remastered version of "Diamonds And Pearls". The sound is great.

Single Mixes and Edits. Party time.

Three CD's with material from the vault. Amazing.

"Live At Glam Slam, 1992". In concert. Amazing...

FRANK ZAPPA & THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION - LIVE... BUFFALO, N.Y. 1974

  • frank zappa & the mothers of invention: live... buffalo, n.y. 1974
        (2023, cd, europe, timeline)
Another 'radio show album'.
Unofficial and unauthorized, but not illegal as such....
It has been out a little while but my shipment kept being delayed so I had to cancel and buy it at another source.

Recorded on 1974 11 15 at the Memorial Auditorium, Buffalo, NY
  1. Tush Tush Tush
  2. Stink-Foot
  3. RDNZL
  4. Village Of The Sun
  5. Echidna's Arf (Of You)
  6. Don’t You Ever Wash That Thing?
  7. Penguin In Bondage
  8. T’Mershi Duween
  9. The Dog Breath Variations / Uncle Meat
  10. Building A Girl
  11. Don’t Eat The Yellow Snow
  12. Nanook Rubs It
  13. St. Alfonzo’s Pancake Breakfast
  14. Father O’Blivion
  15. Camarillo Brillo
  16. Trouble Every Day

It changes every now and then, but today, for me, this is the best line-up Frank's band ever had: FZ, Napoleon, George, Ruth, Tom and Chester.
And if would have to pick some of my favorite tunes, you can just see them listed in this setlist.

If my memory serves me right, this was one of the first recordings that I got during the tape trading days...
I'm not convinced that this is the best available recording of this concert, but what a show...

STEPHEN FOGLIA / SPF - A TRANSIENT DICHOTOMY

  • Stephen Foglia / SPF: A Transient Dichotomy
(2021, 2cd, USA, ramblood recon records / private release)
        (2021, download / streaming, --, amazon)
San Jose, California-based multi-instrumentalist and composer Stephen Foglia (or SPF) released “A Transient Dichotomy” in 2021. The 2 CD set offered 7 original pieces and 21 (jazz) covers, including a bluesy version of FZ’s ‘Zoot Allures’.

Next to the 2CDR set, the album also got released through digital music platforms such as Amazon.

‘Zoot Allures’ featured Stephen Foglia (guitar, Rhodes, bass, synth marimba) and Terry Carleton (drums).

NEW OLD WORK BY PHI YAAN-ZEK

Phi Yaan-Zek:
“Is There..." is a six part electroacoustic suite that I composed and recorded between March and June of 1997 under the alias of Julius Crab. First premiered on July 17th 1997, the initial impetus for starting this piece came after hearing a performance of Karlheinz Stockhausen’s Hymnen at Cardiff University several months earlier which opened me up to some electroacoustic compositional possibilities. However the initial musical inspiration for this piece was somewhere between the Aphex Twin's early ambient works and Steve Reich's 1960s experimental tape loop phasing pieces such as "Come Out”.

Remastered and made available through Bandcamp in 2023 !

THE OZRIC TENTACLES - LOTUS UNFOLDING

  • the orzic tentacles: lotus unfolding
        (2023, cd, uk, k scope)
Prog / space / psychedelic band The Ozric Tentacles have a new album out, "Lotus Unfolding".
According to a trustworthy source, this is their 37th release !

A first listening session left me quite happy.
Still spacy, but more up-tempo. With a lot of nice solos.

This is nice.
Watch the brand-new promo video :

CROSS - HALFWAY TO SOMEWHERE

  • cross: halfway to somewhere
        (2020, cd, Sweden, progress records)
Multi-instrumentalist and composer Hansi Cross passed away in October 2017.
The posthumous “Halfway Of Somewhere” album presented alternative versions of previously released material, plus some previously unreleased tracks, all of them recorded in 1997 !
One of the unreleased tracks was FZ’s ‘Zoot Allures’.
Digipack.

The album is OK, but the Zappa piece sounds great !! Really great.

Another beautiful addition to The Others Of Invention series...

ROBERT JON & THE WRECK - WRECKAGE VOL.2

  • robert jon & the wreck: wreckage vol.2
        (2022, cd, usa, ktba)

A bit misleading maybe, as "Wreckage Vol.2" might be the album title of  a compilation album, but that's not true at all.
Robert Jon & The Wreck's "Wreckage Vol.2" was the band's 10th album, released last year.

Released both on Robert Jon's label and on the Keep The Blues Alive label, "Wreckage Vol.2" is another fine release by the southern California-based band.
Bluesy southern rock.

An excellent way to start the day.

MARCO MINNEMANN HAS A NEW ALBUM OUT

Marco Minnemann - ‘Glass Attack’ (from the new album ‘Their Colors Fade’)

'Egg Nog'

DISTRICT 97

From GlassOnyon PR

The title track from District 97's upcoming album, "Stay for the Ending".

Spirit of Unicorn Music are delighted to announce a brand new single and video from DISTRICT 97, to mark the launch of their new album Stay For The Ending which is now available worldwide.

The new single is the album’s title track, Stay For The Ending and combines dual themes rooted in both the real world and in metaphor. The song’s narrative addresses the ever-shifting, omnipresent threat of Covid-19 in its many variants and forms. The track also speaks to personal relationships, deceit and the breaking of trust. The band describe the song as being about “ghosts and flames, smoke and deception.”

The track was written by band keyboard player ANDREW LAWRENCE and vocalist LESLIE HUNT (AMERICAN IDOL FEMALE VOCALIST FINAL 2007). Andrew comments, “In writing this song, I tried to fit within the existing D97 canon whilst also adding my own twist. I kept the form of the song pretty simple so that we could focus more of our energy on getting these very difficult unison lines as tight as possible.”

Lead singer Leslie goes on to say, “When I heard the demo of Andrew’s new song, I could not wait to sing that chorus melody and perform it with the band. It’s so powerful and catchy - and I knew it would be insanely fun to wail on! It’s probably one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to sing in my life - but it also caused me to expand my range and now it feels easy and awesome to perform.”

Lawrence continues, “It’s been a pleasure hearing this song evolve, and I’ve loved the personality that all of the other band members have added to it.”

2 MELLO - SOUNDS OF TOKYO-TO FUTURE

  • 2 mello: sounds of tokoy-to future
        (2021, cd, usa, private release)

2 Mello sampled (or used) a Frank Zappa interview in his 'I Shoulda Known', track 12 on the album.
Out on CD. Comes in a nice digipack.

The music is more for Prodigy fans, I think, but the Zappa sample is cool.

FRANK ZAPPA & THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION - LITTLE HOUSE I USED TO LIVE IN

  • frank zappa & the mothers of invention: little house i used to live in
        (2016, 3cd-bootleg, europe, scorpio)
Today's spotlight goes to "Little House I Used To Live In", a 3 CD bootleg that got released on the Scorpio label in 2016.
That's the same Scorpio label that issued "Chunga's On Tour" and "Muffin Research Kitchen".
Similar gatefold sleeve with collage pictures all over.
The music is exactly the same a on "The Legendary 1970 Fillmore Tapes" 3 CD bootleg set that got released by the Eat A Peach label. Also in 2016.

Enjoyable, but obsolete if you have "The Legendary 1970 Fillmore Tapes", or if you have the Zappateers recordings.

MATHIEU FISET - ONE MORE !!?!??

Mathieu Fiset is a keyboardist, drummer, composer and record producer from Quebec City, Canada.

  • robert jon & the wreck: robert jon & the wreck
        (2017, cd, usa, private release)

Southern rock, with its roots in the 1970's.
Feel good music.

SUN RA ARKESTRA - NOTHING IS... COMPLETED & REVISITED

  • sun ra arkestra: nothing is... completed & revisited
(2022, cd, switzerland, hat hut records)
Initially, Sun Ra's "Nothing Is..." album got released in 1966 !! On the ESP record label.£

During Sun Ra's career the album got re-released on different labels throughout the world. But it wasn't until 2010 that ESP released a 2CD set with lots of bonus stuff.

Last year, the "Completed & Revisited" recording of "Nothing Is..." was made available. Not as complete as the 2010 2 CD set, but still lots of additional material compared to the 1966 album.

And it still sounds astonishing.
1966. Incredible...

DEAD CAT BOUNCE - CHANCE EPISODES

  • dead cat bounce: chance episodes
        (2011, cd, usa, cuneiform)
Drummer Bill Carbone was recently mentioned in this blog because of the new Z3 release, "Filibuster For Frank", a very fine Frank Zappa tribute album.
Bill is also part of the Max Creek band, probably the longest existing jam band (also mentioned in this very blog a little while ago).

And to my surprise, I was recently made aware that Bill was the drummer for Dead Cat Bounce, a superb jazz ensemble that released (only) a handful of albums.
"Chance Episodes" was the ensemble's fourth and final album and it got released by Cuneiform !!
In 2011 !!

Beautiful compositions, fine improvisations.
Wow !!
Recommended listening !!

THE RESIDENTS - SAM'S ENCHANTED EVENING

  • the residents: sam's enchanted evening
        (2023, cd, austria, klanggalerie)
I'm listening to The Residents' brand-new "Sam's Enchanted Evening" album at this very moment.
A weird and exciting puzzle of musical fragments and stories.

Sam's Enchanted Evening is a theatrical performance by Randy Rose, lead singer of The Residents. It was performed between October 2011 and March 2012 in Berkeley, California and New York City. Rose's only companion on stage was long-time Residents collaborator Joshua Raoul Brody on piano. A one-man cabaret performance consisting largely of re-interpreted renditions of popular songs from the mid-to-late 20th century, interpreted by Rose in the guise of "Sam the Stranger", it was the first Residents-related performance piece to be credited to an individual member of the group.

Out on the Klanggalerie label.
