KING GIZZARD & THE LIZARD WIZARD

Influenced by FZ, you say ?

-- info: Ive Hapers

VARIOUS ARTISTS - VIDEO GAMES LIVE, VOLUME ONE

This 2008 soundtrack / compilation album has various orchestras and ensembles performing famous video game tunes or melodies.
From the list, I only recognised Tron, Warcraft and Tetris, but the music is quite interesting.
The last track, 'Castlevania Rock (Live)' is performed by Tommy Tallarico (guitar), Dweezil Zappa (guitar), Martin Leung (keyboards), Joe Travers (drums) and Pete Griffin (bass).
Oh,... and 'Halo Suite' features Steve Vai... Wow. Hadn't noticed that before...

BALALAIKA NUEVO - NEW ART FOR THE PEOPLE

The Balalaika Nueva trio released "New Art For The People" in 2007. The album presents 12 of the trio's favorite melodies including Frank Zappa's 'Peaches En Regalia'. Performed on balalaika, accordion and contrabass-balalaika.

ALTERNATIVE TV - VIVA LA ROCK 'N' ROLL

Recorded live in England, France, Germany and the US of A, and released in 2004, this 'Official Bootleg' album features ATV performing two Zappa compositions : 'Why Don't You Do Me Right?' and 'Plastic People'.
It's the first time 'Plastic People' got released on one of ATV's releases. Previously, it could already be heard on the 2002 "Punk Aid" compilation album.
Another fine addition to "The Others Of Invention", bands performing Frank Zappa's music.

CHITARRE 1994 07

Nothing wrong with going through some old magazines...
Issue #100 of the Italian Chitarra magazine got published in July 1994.
There were a lot of Zappa specials after FZ's passing, but this one looks pretty impressive. Too bad I can't read Italian. Well, I can read it... I just can't understand it.
  • chitarre
    (1994/07, magazine, italy)

The july / august 1994 issue of Chitarre had FZ on the cover and included:

  • a 6 page article:"Dedicato a Frank Zappa" by Jacopo Benci
  • a 2-page transcription of 'Willie The Pimp' by Simone Sello
  • a 3-page article "Zappa Sulla Chitarra" by Gianfranco Salvatore
  • a 2-page trancription of "Treacherous Cretins' by Simone Sello
  • a 7-page article "Frank Zappa Trent'anni Di Strumenti" by Gianfranco Salvatore
  • a 3-page interview with Bunk Gardner by Jacopo Benci
  • a 2-page transcription of 'Blessed Relief' by Simone Sello
  • a 2-page piece on Steve Vai / Mauro Salvatori
  • a 3-page interview with Sandro Oliva by Jacopo Benci

ROB CUCCURULLO

Warren Cuccurullo's brother, Robert, wrote a book that includes a part where Frank Zappa visited the house.

https://www.bywayofcanarsie.com/
(Check out the "More" section for some nice pictures)

Available through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Kindle, and Kobo.

While growing up in the Canarsie section of Brooklyn, New York during the ‘70s and ‘80s, Robert and his siblings had to endure their father’s violent temper. Robert’s brother Warren found solace in music, first joining Frank Zappa’s band, then co-founding the group Missing Persons, and eventually becoming the lead guitarist for Duran Duran. Following an encounter with a violent sociopath and witnessing a mob murder, Robert became a heavy drug user by the age of sixteen. By his twenties, with his cocaine use spiraling out of control, he got involved with associates of the Lucchese Crime Family and found himself the target of a corrupt police detective. Desperately seeking to escape the neighborhood, Robert volunteered to serve in Operation Desert Storm, where he witnessed death and destruction on an unimaginable scale. Suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress, his drug woes continued as he experienced one life-changing event after another. Following a felony arrest and facing eight years in prison, Robert was forced to confront his demons.

THE RESIDENTS - PAL TV LP

  • the residents: pal tv lp
        (2019, cd, austria, klanggalerie gg307)
The latest Residents-release by the Austrian KlangGalerie record label is the CD re-issue of the 1985 "PAL TV LP".

The album combines live recordings from The Mole Show (originally on side one), and pieces of the Whatever Happened To Vileness Fats soundtrack (originally on side two).
As a bonus, the CD presents 35 minutes of "The Mole Show Live At The House".

Beautiful.

THE RESIDENTS - RMX

  • the residents: rmx
        (2019, cd, austria, klanggalerie gg276-2)

Klanggalerie has made a re-issue available of "RMX", the sold-out 2018 album.
The only difference is that the question mark is green.
Still, a fine album.
"RMX" does indeed mean that you get remixes of older tunes.

Here's the original cover :

VARIOUS ARTISTS - WAYSIDE SAMPLER 6

Here's another fine addition to The Others Of Invention.
"Wayside Sampler 6", a promotional album that got included with orders over at Wayside Music.
From 2009.

This Wayside sampler includes the Ed Palermo Big Band with FZ's 'Echidna's Arf (Of You), Fast 'N' Bulbous with Don Van Vliet's 'Smithsonian Institute Blues' and lots of other fine stuff !
Both tracks were taken from (at the time) recent Cuneiform albums.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - PUNK AID - 25 YEARS OF ANARCHY

This "Punk Aid - 25 Years Of Anarchy" compilation album includes Alternative TV performing Frank Zappa's 'Plastic People'.

FUN WITH THE FOO FIGHTERS

YouTube thought I'd like this.
YouTube was right.

KATZENJAMMER - A KISS BEFORE YOU GO

Norwegian pop/folk/cabaret band Katzenjammer was founded in 2005. They released their second album, "A Kiss Before You Go" in 2011.
Dweezil Zappa plays the lead guitar and guitar solo on on track 11.
The track is called 'Gypsy Flee' and does indeed have some sort of Gypsy feel to it.

The entire album is quite interesting.

Here's a live version of the latest track on the CD.
Nice !!

THE EXTREME MUSIC LIBRARY

The Extreme Music production house offers music for ads, movies, documentaries, and more.
The music is offered to potential customers on CD and is watermarked.
Dweezil Zappa contributed various pieces of music to the Extreme Music Library. It can be found on a series of albums that were made available between 2002 and 2005.

I only recently learned that Extreme Music also released a box with 3 DVDs, containing the entire Extreme Music Library (over 100 albums).
All of Dweezil's contributions are included in this package.

A LOUSY DAY IN HARLEM

The album cover of Ed Palermo's "A Lousy Day In Harlem" is a beautiful tribute to the famous "A Great Day In Harlem" picture by Art Kane.

SCOTT HENDERSON TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM

From Glass Onyon PR :

Guitar Virtuoso Scott Henderson To Release Instrumental Album For Guitar Trio “People Mover” On July 1, 2019

Los Angeles, CA – Guitar virtuoso Scott Henderson has finished his new album “People Mover,” the most ambitious project of his career! The highly anticipated instrumental album for guitar trio will be released on July 1, 2019.

Says Scott, “The music has a lot of interplay due to a busy touring schedule with bassist Romain Labaye and drummer Archibald Ligonniere. I'd say this album is a bit more harmonic than 'Vibe Station,' and the rhythm section plays a bigger role in the music. The challenge was to come up with new tones and effects I haven't used before, since like 'Vibe Station,' the songs are layered with multi guitar tracks.”

“People Mover” demonstrates Scott's striking ability to combine elements of jazz, rock, funk and blues in an even more authentic, seamless and musical way than any of his previous work. Proof that after 35 years as a bandleader, Scott is a musician who's playing and composing continues to grow.

From a recent interview, “My music isn't for purists, that's for sure, and I'm very thankful for my fans who are obviously open-minded and share my love for many different styles of music.”

Scott Henderson's impressive work over the years as co-leader of the group TRIBAL TECH, leader of his own ground breaking trio, and sideman to some of the best jazz artists of their generation, including the great Joe Zawinul, has elevated him to the front ranks of both Jazz and Blues. Catch Scott on tour in 2019: July in Europe, September in South America, and October in Asia.

DOMENICO SOLAZZO

Domenico Solazzo was the man behind PaNoPTiCon, the jazz impro project that featured a.o. Antoine Guenet, Pierre Mottet, Michel Delville (The Wrong Object) and Pieter Claus (Sinister Sister).

Domenico has just released a new (solo) album. It's called "KINO" and it sounds quite good !

YIN YIN

"One Inch Punch" by Yin Yin.
I like the combination of 70's psychedelica and eastern melody lines.

ORCHESTRE FRANCK TORTILLER - JANIS THE PEARL

Pretty impressed by Franck Tortiller's recent Zappa tribute album, I was eager to check out some of his previous releases. Especially the Orchestre material.
"Janis The Pearl" was the first release that was credited to the "Orchestre Franck Tortiller". However, looking at "Collectiv" and "Sing Yer Zappa", it shows a completely different line-up. As if Franck re-started from scratch with "Collectiv" (an album that I really enjoyed).

This Janis Joplin tribute is nice to listen to, but it's a bit too calm, too quiet. For my taste, it lacks dynamics and energy.

THE CARPENTERS

Finally, an excuse to listen to The Carpenters...

from
http://wiki.killuglyradio.com/wiki/Richard_Carpenter

Richard Carpenter (October 15, 1946) is an American singer and pianist, who with his sister Karen Carpenter (1950-1983) formed the popular singing duo the Carpenters. During the early 1970s the group scored hits like "(They Long To Be) Close To You", "We've Only Just Begun", "Goodbye To Love", "Yesterday Once More", "Top Of The World" and "Only Yesterday".

In June 1975 during Billboard Magazine's First International Talent Forum in Los Angeles Richard Carpenter had been invited to speak at the seminar. During his speech he mentioned to the crowd that he was personally responsible for every aspect of the Carpenters' song arrangements and repertoire. Then he asked the crowd how he could be considered so "straitlaced", when he and his sister owned every record by the Mothers of Invention? Frank Zappa was also in the audience that night.

“Frank was a talented fellow. I really liked the way he played the guitar, and I liked his take on certain cultural and sociological issues; he had a marvelously sardonic sense of humor. We saw each other very briefly in the 'Green Room' before going out to answer a few questions.” (Richard Carpenter in an Answers Archive on the Carpenters' fan page. JAMIROQUAI

Last year.
Jamiroquai at the Stuttgart Open Jazz Festival.
Funky. This gets me in a good mood.

HILLTOP HOODS - WALKING UNDER STARS

Hilltop Hoods sampled Captain Beefheart on his "Walking Under Stars" album.
'The Art Of The Handshake' includes excerpts of '25th Century Quaker'.
Here you go :

SUN RA - FATE IN A PLEASANT MOOD

Completing the series of (unofficial) re-releases by Grey Scale, here's "Fate In A Pleasant Mood".
The LP is from 1965 and this CD got released in 2017.

Grey Scale has (re-)released six essential classic Sun Ra albums that you need to hear.
This re-release is nothing fancy, but as far as I recall, it's the first CD release of this recording...
Beautiful.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - ZONA DE OBRAS, MUSICA INDEPENDIENTE, NUMERO 1, TRIQUINOISE

This 1995 sampler was included with Zona De Obras, a Spanish music fanzine.
The first track was Amor Sucio with FZ's 'Dirty Love', from their 1992 album.
Track number two is by Pachuco Cadaver, a band from Buenos Aires.
Data has been added to the United Mutations Archives.

THE RESIDENTS - ESKIMO DECONSTRUCTED

  • the residents: eskimo deconstructed
(2019, 2lp*cd, uk, cherry red records)

"Eskimo Deconstructed" arrived at the United Mutations Headquarters last week.
Haven't been able to give it a listen yet.
I should probably start by giving the original album another couple of spins.

RUDY TROUVE - ALFRED TROUVE - STEF KAMIL CARLENS

Rudy Trouvé has teamed up with his brother Alfred and Stef Kamil Carlens for an art exhibition at Museumstraat25 between 26th June and 13th July.

Museumstraat25 is an expo room at Galerie Bernaerts at (you guessed it) the Museumstraat 25, in Antwerp, Belgium.

THE CLAUDIO SERPENTINO PLAYS THE BEATLES

November 2015 The Claudio Serpentino released "The Wide Album", a vinyl-only release.
(The Claudio Serpentino = Kloot Per W. en Marleen Van Ende)

Sort of Mutated Beatles.
I love it.

Number NRT013.
I wonder what happened to NRT007, "Not Available"...

ORCHESTRA FRANCK TORTILLER - COLLECTIV

The recently released "Shut Up 'N Sing Yer Zappa" wasn't the first album by the Orchestra Franck Tortiller.
"Collectiv" got released a bit over a year ago and is an excellent discovery.
No Zappa this time. Just a beautiful album.
Recommended.

Here's a live fragment from the 2018 Paris Jazz Festival where the Orchestre Franck Tortiller performed with Guillaume Perret (who performed at Zappanale in 2014, and with LeBocal in 2010) !

CHUNGA'S REVENGE

Frank Zappa's "Chunga's Revenge" got released in 1970 in the US, Canada, the UK, France, Germany, New Zeeland, Argentina, Mexico,...
One year later, Australia, Japan, Venezuela and some other countries followed.

There's a couple of countries that produced a 'new' album title, like Argentina :
"La Revancha De Chunga" :

Or Spain : "La Venganza De Chunga" :

Or Mexico, reworking the lay-out : "La Venganza De Chunga"

For those of us who never bought the Mexican edition of "Chunga's Revenge", a counterfeit edition has been spotted on various shelves the last couple of months.

FRANK ZAPPA'S JOE'S GARAGE

Frank Zappa's "Joe's Garage" albums were re-released in the Czech Republic in the early nineties as picture discs. 12 " vinyl picture discs, that is.
Browsing through my Zappa albums, I noticed that I had the "Acts II & II" picture disc set. I don't  even remember when and where I bought it. Must have been years ago.
Anyway, I came across "Act I" recently, so I couldn't resist...
