DE LORIANS - DE LORIANS

Mentioned on this blog a couple of weeks ago but as I recently received the CD (and the gorgeous looking vinyl edition on 'splatter vinyl'), I'm happy to bring them up again.

...and sometimes it just turns out that the newest members of the freak music family are a bunch of long-haired Japanese twenty-somethings playing Zappa-loving Canterbury-inspired blissed-out spiritual jazz rippers. If you had that on your predictions list, right on, you’ll be extra amped. But either way, meet De Lorians, Tokyo’s newest fire music exports, by way of their self-titled debut.

Grown from the always-heady Tokyo music scene and led by Takefumi Ishida, playing sax and synth, all five De Lorians contribute material to what they call pataphysical music. The seven tracks here burst with overstuffed Weasels Ripped My Flesh-style action: bonkers horn arrangements, savage guitar solos, constant movement, through-composed sections, improv, surreality, and the occasional peaceful woodwind-dabbled valley. No singing, no poodle play, just constant surprises, rich vibes, and heavy fun.

GOV'T MULE - THE TEL-STAR SESSIONS

Recorded in 1994, shortly after Warren Haynes, Allen Woody and Matt Abts started Gov't Mule.
As Warren explains in the liner notes: "We had no designs on touring or making a follow-up album - much less on staying together for five, ten or twenty years."

An essential Gov't Mule album.

STEFAN HÜFNER'S ZAPPATA

I recently got hold of another gem.
November 11, 2011, Stefan Hüfner's Zappata project got performed at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Germany (with permission of the Zappa Family Trust).
The Folkwang University documented this concert by releasing a promotional CD of the event.

Amazing.
Beautiful arrangements. Superb vocals by Mara Minjoli and great guitar stuff by Werner Neumann (Drei Vom Rhein !).
I remember being pretty impressed when I saw them at Zappanale in 2015 and this CD only acknowledges that.

SANDY HURVITZ / ESSRA MOHAWK

"Sandy's album is here at last" is getting an upgrade / reissue.
Originally released on Frank Zappa's Bizarre Records label.
In 1968.

She was scheduled to perform at the Woodstock Festival in August 1969, but her manager missed the turn in the road, resulting in them arriving too late to perform. Sadly, this seems an encapsulation of her entire career. She has made some fantastic music, but always seems to have been in the wrong place at the wrong time.

PIERRE VERVLOESEM FEAT. MORGAN AGREN - ARTISTE INTERNATIONAL

Wowie Zowie !!
A lot of excellent music has been released the last couple of months. There's the Ed Palermo jazz album, The Zappa In New York set, new titles in The Residents' pREServed series plus their "In Between Dreams Live" album, and there's Pierre Vervloesem's brand-new "Artiste International"!!

It seems like Pierre's previous release, "Artiste Belge", only got released a couple of months ago and now he's already back with the follow-up, "Artiste International".
This time, it's not just Pierre with his guitar, bass and machine wizardry as he is joined by Morgan Ågren, drummer extraordinaire who just finished recording and performing with Magma and who will soon join Devin Townsend on his new tour.

They're a perfect match.
The result is amazing. 12 instrumental, energetic tracks.
I've played the album at least once every day this week (together with Frank Zappa's "Quaudiophiliac" if you really want to know) and it keeps putting a huge smile on my face.

My cup of tea !
Essential listening.
Also out on CD but you'll need to hurry as there are only fourty-something copies left !!

And Devin’s band also features Mike Keneally and Morgan Ågren, among others.

MAGMA'S "ZËSS" ALBUM GETS A LIMITED EDITION GOLD COLORED VINYL RELEASE

from Glass Onyon PR
French Music Legends Magma To Release New Album “Zëss” On Limited Edition Gold Colored Vinyl

Limited edition of 1500 numbered copies on 180 gram audiophile gold colored vinyl

Magma's critically acclaimed newest album Zëss is a 38-minute musical work by Christian Vander. Composed in 1970, Zëss had long been plagued by its incompleteness, its recording was deferred for years. Four decades after its first draft, the work has finally been recorded in an orchestral version that gives it both its true dreamlike dimension and its transcending power. The first public performance took place in Bourges in 1979. It is the last piece in a series of unfinished compositions from the 1970s. During the last 15 years, they finished and released all these different pieces. Zëss is described as a work that touches the philosophical domain by its treatment of the idea of nothingness and its evocation of the theme of time.

Magma turned fifty this year, catapulting into the very exclusive circle of bands who for five decades have never laid down their instruments, nor turned down their volume! The oldest French band still in existence has always played at full sail, never yielding to the siren song of passing trends. The fiercely original music has tirelessly adhered to the highest artistic standards while still reaching a wide audience of all ages.

Zëss is available for pre-order as a limited edition of 1500 numbered copies on gold colored vinyl. The package includes a 4-page booklet. The vinyl edition will be released on September 20, 2019.

Various Artists

A cornucopia of carefully curated covers…
This triple vinyl album features 34 carefully-chosen songs from the late 1960s and early 1970s, from genres that encompass progressive, folk and psychedelic rock.

Original compositions from artists as diverse as Genesis, Cream, The Zombies, Nick Drake, The Doors and Frank Zappa have been given the deluxe treatment by a phalanx of great talent including Teddy Thompson, Eliza Carthy, Jackie Oates, Marry Waterson and Julie Tippetts.

It’s been three long years in the making; the result is an extraordinarily diverse and diverting record.

Side E features Frank Zappa's 'Montana', performed by Iamesh and the Secret Collective

THE RESIDENTS UPDATE

from the newsletter :

As ever, The Residents’ train continues to roll, and August 9th sees the release of their ‘God In Three Persons’ pREServed 3CD set, which is choc full, as usual, of related stuff – this time around there’s the instrumental OST version of the album, live recordings, singles and, most exciting of all, some demos and a previously unheard 23-minute piece entitled ‘Knot In A Million Years’. It’s must-hear stuff if you’re a fan of the original album. You may know the group are particularly keen on this record, and are currently bringing it to life as a stage show, which is something they’ve been hanging on to since 1988. So, y’know, stay up to speed and check it out.

https://www.cherryred.co.uk/product/the-residents-god-in-three-persons-3cd-preserved-edition

Meanwhile, next up in the pREServed series, we’re delighted to confirm, will be two highly anticipated sets. Firstly, a 2CD 1971-1972 thing, which will include ‘The W***** B*** Album’, ‘B.S.’, three live recordings made during that period and some other related bits and pieces. You’re probably aware that ‘The W***** B*** Album’ and ‘B.S.’ were released as Record Store Day only titles over the last couple of years, but this is the first time on CD for both. Something of a bumper 2-fer about that one! And, drumroll…. we’re also pleased to confirm that a 2CD ‘Not Available’ set will be along at the same time. It took a while, and The Residents took some persuading, but eventually they dug those multitrack tapes out and dove into that material as it was before Ralph Records broke trust, re-processed it and turned it into ‘Not Available’ in 1978. So there’s an entire disc of previously unreleased stuff on there, some of it familiar (but different) and plenty of it never-before-heard. Personal favourites are ‘Where To Begin?’, ‘Theme From X’, ‘Fairly Well’ and ‘Love Sprong’, but that’s just us. Along with sleeve notes that try to explain what the hell was going on with that album, its paradigm-shifting stuff, honestly. Not to be missed.

Meanwhile, the group are busy with their next surefire hit album, the ‘Dyin’ Dog’ project. Word is things are almost-but-not-quite in the can, and there’ll soon be news of tracklist, formats and so on. We’ve heard some of it, and have struggled to let go of a couple of the tunes ever since. Some of the record will be familiar to those of you who came along to the ‘In Between Dreams’ tour too. Who could forget ‘Die! Die! Die!’ being screamed at a room full of people hoping they’ll play ‘Santa Dog’ at some point?

As ever, there’s more, and there’ll be more of these missives. Tell a friend, share the love and just try to enjoy the ride. Until next time….

Your Pals,
New Ralph Too
