- frank zappa: the freak-out list
(2010, dvd, uk, chrome dreams)
About a year ago, Chrome Dreams released "Frank Zappa: The Freak-Out List", a documentary about the musical roots of Frank Zappa using the artists that got listed on the 1966 "Freak Out" album as a starting point.
This release does take an in-depth look at some of the composers that influenced Zappa: the classical ones (Schoenberg, Varèse, Stravinski, ...), R&B (Johnny Guitar Watson), and some of the Doo-Wop material, but it's a pity that there's no mention of Raymond Scott or Paul Buff, two names that should not be overlooked in this puzzle.
I would also have liked to find out if Zappa and the Mothers frequented some of the (free) jazz groups that were playing in New York City around 1967.
Being influenced does not stop after your first record...
Still, an impressive document.
