BORIS SAVOLDELLI - BIOCOSMOPOLITAN

MoonJune Records has released a new album by vocal wonder Boris Savoldelli. If the name doesn't ring a bell, you absolutely need to check him out.

Boris Savoldelli is not just a great singer, he's a vocal orchestra all by himself.

Recording multiple layers of vocals (and sounds !), Boris creates a very full and powerful sound. It's hard to believe that this is just one guy in a multitrack recording studio. "Biocosmopolitan" presents jazzy, vocal stuff, and features a couple of impressive guest appearances as well. Jimmy Haslip plays astonishing bass on 'Biocosmopolitan', while Paolo Fresu adds great trumpet lines to 'Concrete Clima' and 'Kerouac In New York City'.

Worth checking out.

TODD GRUBBS RELEASES NEW ALBUM

Florida Guitar Virtuoso Todd Grubbs Releases New CD 'Return of the Worm' Featuring All-Star Line-Up

3/11/2011 – Tampa, Florida - Much to the anticipation of guitar aficionados across the globe, Florida guitar virtuoso Todd Grubbs is releasing his new CD 'Return of the Worm' this month (March 2011). Todd Grubb's previous CD 'Space, Time and the Electric' garnered rave reviews throughout the wworld, elevating the guitarist to cult status amongst seasoned musicians. Now Todd is back with an album that is sure to thrill and inspire those who listen. “My new CD is a little different than my previous few releases,” explains Todd, “although it really may be more of a progression in being truer to myself. I really have gotten to the point where I am creating my music without any consideration of what others might think, or what I think others might think. Don't get me wrong, this is still a crazy guitar CD with tons of varied guitars flying around, but I had a lot of fun with the addition of 'field recordings'; a group of interesting recordings that I have made over the years and then I have built compositions around them or interjected them into preexisting songs. That was definitely the best time I have ever had making a CD and I am excited about continuing in this direction.”

Like his last CD, Todd Grubb's newest masterpiece features and array of special guest artists including Mike Keneally (Zappa), Blues Saraceno, John Wesley (Porcupine Tree), Sean Malone, Mark Prator, Jerry Outlaw, Pattrick Bettison, Jeff Henry and Alan Tatum. “I am thrilled to have some great guest artists on this CD,” Grubb's exclaims excitedly. “I was very happy to get Mike Keneally to do a solo, he is a huge inspiration to me on a number of levels, number one his talent is huge, but even more important, his true passion for creating pure music for art's sake has moved me to do the same. Blues Saraceno also contributes an excellent solo, he has always been one of my favorite players because he has such a cool feel. Last but not least, my friend John Wesley from Porcupine Tree was nice enough to add a great solo and help me finish my CD with a dual jam as it fades out.” Todd Grubbs studied at Berklee College of Music and has been voted 'Most Outstanding Guitarist' at the Tampa Bay Music Awards, as well as winning the 'Most Outstanding Video' two consecutive years in a row. Along with Frank Zappa, Grubbs has a large range of influences such as Steve Vai, John Coltrane, The Beatles, Charles Mingus, Kate Bush, Paul Gilbert, Jeff Beck, Michael Schenker, Shaun Lane, Ulli Jon Roth, Adrian Belew and Jonas Hellborg.”

As well as releasing his new CD, Todd Grubbs has been busy with many side projects such as creating the Todd Grubbs School of Rock; a teaching program that teaches kids and adults how to play in a band. Along with a steady roster of students he teaches, Todd has recently been producing other acts, like the debut CD by Young Rockers Beyond Ariose. “I am working on a DVD project,” adds Todd. “It really is a work in progress. I have a lot of old stuff I am compiling, I have shot some live in studio footage and I plan to shoot a live concert as soon as I can get all the logistics together. I also play guitar in an electric blues/jam band called 3 Green Windows, we have just released a CD called 'Deep Green Blues' which I produced.”

FIDOPLAYSZAPPA NEWSFLASH

From the FidoPlaysZappa newsletter:

- For the first time in its long history FpZ is gonna rock the stage in Bad Doberan's ZAPPANALE 22 on Sunday August 21 this summer, featuring the 3 Zappa-Alummni Ike Willis, Bobby Martin & Ray White. We're happy to finally play europe's (the world's? the universe's??) biggest Zappa-Festival and are looking forward to meeting some of you there!

http://www.zappanale.de/

- "Too Big To Fail", FpZs still brandnew acoustic album is now available digitally in all major stores, eg:

http://itunes.apple.com/ch/album/too-big-to-fail/id420597089?uo=4

- We had some nice & polite critics for the album we don't want to deprive you of; while some people like cupkaces better, some even preferred our contemporary 16minute-artyfarty-epic-hit musician's salary to all the rest. Maybe a good idea for the next album?!?

THE SAARLÄNDISCHES STAATSORKESTER PERFORMS THE YELLOW SHARK * * A REVIEW

Here's a short review of the "Shark" by Andreas Hosse.

The Saarländisches Staatstheater / Staatsorchester performed Frank Zappa's "The Yellow Shark" at a sold out, 300 visitors, Radialsystem in Berlin on 2011/03/15. The stage was divided in two parts: the martial arts sportsmen and woman were in front, and the 24-headed orchestra was in the back.

The concert was often interrupted to give the sportsmen the chance to say something about their personal relationship to martial arts. This lasted up to four or five minutes, often followed by a sparring. The audience, including me, was quite irritated with what was going on on stage. The first applause only came up after half an hour, silence until that point.

For me, it was two different events at the same time. It didn't fit. I tried to concentrate on the orchestra by looking over the sportsmen und by trying to ignore the martial artists as much as possible.

The performance of the Orchestra was OK. It was not as dynamic as the Ensemble Modern, but it was OK. 'Girl In The Magnesium Dress' was definitly a highlight of the show.

SUN RA / TRANSPARENCY UPDATE

Here's a message from fellow Saturnian John on the Sun Ra newsgroup:

Transparency has a new DVD offering that will be new to most everyone. Here are some notes from the Transparency 0318 DVD "Sun Ra - Jazz Session" sleeve:

This black and white portrait of the Arkestra is startlingly beautiful and is possibly the single finest film of the band ever. This surpasses even Space Is The Place in its details of how this tribe conjures the purest magic of costumes, percussion, and joyous science fiction truth.

Captured during a momentary stop in France (1/8/72) on their way back to Oakland after the Autumn/Winter 1971 European and Cairo, Egypt tours, this flawless video recording has never been seen by even the most hard core Sun Ra collectors and discographers.

Produced and Directed by Bernard Lion

02. Watusi
03. Discipline
04. Synth

And there's also a new Sun Ra album in the works: "Sun Ra at 'The Red Garter' NYC 1970."

SOUND LIBERATION - OPEN UP YOUR EARS AND GET SOME

Sound Liberation is the brainchild of Gene Pritsker. The ensemble was formed in 1996 and has performed all over the world.

"Open Up Your Ears And Get Some" combines various musical styles. The first track, for instance, mixes a Chopin piece (performed on violin) with a hip-hop beat, adds a sitar and has people rapping over it. Some of the other pieces have classic vocals, or a jazz guitar solo, or a string quartet.
As Gene Pritsker put it: "In this album we combine our love for classical music, jazz and music of various cultures with our love for hip-hop by incorporating our own unique lyrical style."

To my ears, this is a very fine experiment. Intriguing to say the least.

Check out the band's MySpace site for more samples!

HAMILTON STERLING AND JIMMY HASLIP - MIGRATION

When I talked about this Hamilton Sterling / Jimmy Haslip collaboration last year, I was very impressed. "Migration" is a journey through sound. One big soundscape. From Africa to the stars.
The only thing that has me wondering, was the fact that it was a double-layer DVDA (dvd audio) release.

The good news is that "Migration" has been relased as a plain audio CD.
As the factsheet says: "This 2011 audio CD release is a wide dynamic range remix of the original surround recording. Now available at Amazon, CDBaby, Abstract Logix, and Helikon Sound."

ALON NECHUSHTAN - WORDS BEYOND

Pianist Alon Nechushtan, drummer Dan Weiss and bassist François Moutin showcase their virtuosity in a set of excellent, melodic, yet complex jazz tunes. The album starts with 'Muppet Shock', which, when I close my eyes, shows Charlie Brown and his buddies dancing around at the playground. And somehow, this joyful feeling stayed with me for the entire album.

The beauty of "Words Beyond" lies in the contrast of the melodic lines and the complexity of the songs. Changing rhythms, tone variations, colourful melodies and impressive interactions.

I like it.

The below sample is not on the album, but it'll show you what the trio sounds like (at a quiet moment).

CPT.CHEESE-BEARD UPDATE

I received some fine pictures of Cpt.Cheese-Beard at the "Alter Ego Festival" 2011 02 19.
Didn't know about it sooner. But the pictures are good.
Added almost the whole bunch to the Sisters Of Prevention entry over at the U.M.Archives.

Wait a minute! No horns in sight? Did they perform as a quintet??
And did you notice the Cpt.'s new guitar?
