BASSWORKS.DK - BASSWORKS.DK

Alex Choub's Bassworks.dk project released a funky trip-hop version of FZ's 'Dirty Love' on their "Bassworks.dk" album.

PIPCO - WELCOMETOTHESOUNDTRACKFROMACORNEROFMYMIND

Pipco = Dominic Giovinazzo, a Canadian musician. Not to be confused with the Italian Pipco band.

Dominic’s “Welcometothesoundtrackfromacornerofmymind” album sampled FZ (?) on ‘Media’ and included Dominic’s excellent version of FZ’s ‘Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance’.
In all, quite a fine release.

FLYING HORSEMAN - MOTHERSHIP

Mattias Cré, Bert Dockx, Loesje Maieu, Alfredo Bravo and Martha Maieu.
Flying Horseman.

Here's a band that keeps amazing me.
The eight tracks on "Mothership" are very colourful and exciting.
The direct, accentuated sound suits the songs. I love it.

THE KEGEL MUSCLES

The “Faux Pas Potpourri” 2 CD compilation album presented recordings from the Very Small Records label, previously named the Too Many Records label. The album included The Kegel Muscles recordings of FZ’s ‘Bow Tie Daddy’, a track that already could be found on the 1996 “Wood Panel Pacer Wagon With Mags” compilation.

Mörglbl.

Technically amazing and so funny to watch and listen to.

TWAN VAN GERVEN - JUNK DILEMMA / DUTCH X-ING

Dutch guitarist and composer Twan van Gerven released “Junk Dilemma” in 2014 and “Dutch X-ing” in 2015. Both were made available as digital downloads on Bandcamp.
The good news is that both albums were released together as a 2 CD set earlier this year.

Did someone say zappa-esque ?

Here's what it looked like live at the Paradox jazz club in Tilburg, NL, last year :

SOFT MACHINE

Leonardo 'MoonJune' says :
Soft Machine will record the new studio album this Fall in London, which will be released in the early 2021. For live shows in 2020, it's still too early to know, several things are pending, who knows, we live in a very weird era of the humanity. But in 2021, expect a lot of Soft Machine: UK, Europe, Japan, China, USA, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay....

PAUL & ANDRE - LIVE IN AMERICA

In 1979, Dutch duo Paul en André recorded a dutch version of Frank Zappa's 'Love Of My Life'. The track got released both on 7" and on LP later the same year.
The album got called "Live In America" (America is a small town in The Netherlands !)

I recently found out that the album got issued on CD as well. On the very same Universe Productions record label. Unfortunately, the CD doesn't mention a date of release (and I like to know such things).

JEAN-LUC PONTY

In 1970, the World Pacific Jazz label released the Jean-Luc Ponty / Frank Zappa collaboration entitled "King Kong".
A fascinating release.

The album got combined with "Electric Connection", another World Pacific Jazz release (from 1969) and released as a 2 CD package in 2004. On the Gott Discs label.
And again in 2009 on the BGO Records label.

THE PRIMITIVES GROUP - COMEBACK 2017 LIVE

Czech psychedelic rock band The Primitives Group existed from 1965 until 1969. They reunited in 2016 and released “Comeback 2017 Live” on year later, combining a 2017 live concert with an enhanced disc with archive material from 1968.
The 2017 live concert included FZ’s ‘Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance’ and the Archive disc presented the band performing FZ’s ‘Status Back Baby’.
Released as a digipack.

Here's the band performing 'Soul Kitchen' (The Doors)

SCUBA Z

A little while ago, I was able to score some more stuff by Scuba Z.
The Edinburgh duo sampled some Zappa on 'Californian Paranoia' a track that they already released in 1998 !

Here's the track in question. Album version.

AKA MOON - OPUS 111

This latest Aka Moon album got released early in 2020. I just finished adding the album to the United Mutations Archives.

"Opus 111" is inspired by the play "She Talks To Beethoven" by Adrienne Kennedy.
Fabrizzio Cassol, Michel Hatzigeorgiou, Stéphane Galland and guests Fredy Massamba, João Barradas and Fabian Fiorini take the listener on a journey, connecting with 'black spaniard' Beethoven and searching for the common ground in classical music and jazz.

ZAPPIT!

  • zappit!
    compiled by michele mordente
        (2017, book, italymuscles)
"Zappit!" is a 36-page booklet that got released a couple of years ago by a small Italian publisher. If offers illustrations and drawings of Frank Zappa, taken from various books and magazines, by various comic book artists.
The most famous one is of course Tanino Liberatore who did the album cover for "The Man From Utopia" but there's lots more.
Quite interesting and a bargain if you order it directly from the publisher :
https://musclesedizioniunderground.bigcartel.com/product/zappit

More info on Afka.net as well:
https://www.afka.net/Books/Zappit.htm

ALEX'S HAND - MADAME PSYCHOSIS

Alex's Hand released their first EP in 2012.
"Madame Psychosis" presented four tracks. The EP is available on Bandcamp, but I'm happy that I recently found (a physical copy of) this CD.
Not as energetic and outspoken as their later work, "Madame Psychosis" probably did turn some heads when it was released.

THE RESIDENTS - WONDER OF WEIRD SKETCHES

The Residents
"Wonder Or Weird Sketches" demo album.

RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS - THE CHEESE-FLOWER-LIVE-TRAX

During the 1990 Pinkpop concert, the Red Hot Chili Peppers performed a snippet of FZ's 'Inca Roads' as an intro to 'Funky Crime'.
The recording found its way to the "Holland 1991" bootleg.
I only recently found out that this 1990 concert was also featured on the "The Cheese-Flower-Live-Trax" bootleg, including the 'Inca Roads' intro.

From the tv-broadcast (around 8 minutes and 30 seconds into the movie)

NOLAN POTTER'S NIGHTMARE BAND

Austin, Texas-based Nolan Potter's Nightmare Band released their "Nightmare Forever" album on vinyl and on CD last year. On Castle Face Records.
https://www.castlefacerecords.com/products/nolan-potters-nightmare-band-nightmare-forever
Psychedelic rock.

More recently, frontman Nolan Potter recorded FZ's 'Dog Breath, In The Year Of The Plague'.
Wowie zowie !!

VARIOUS ARTISTS - THANK YOU FOR BEING YOU

Next to the promotional CDR-release that I added to The Others Of Invention last week, there's, of course, also the regular CD release. Digipack. Black on white (while the promo is the inverse).
It includes Frank Blake's rendition of FZ's 'Any Way The Wind Blows'.
Frank Blake, by the way, is a duo. Francis McDonald and Norman Blake.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - BOMB ANNIVERSARY COLLECTION 1991-2001

The Bomb Hip-Hop Records label celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2001 (which is almost twenty years ago...)
The "Anniversary Collection" 4 CD set included DJ Z-Trip's 'Rockstar', a track that sampled FZ's 'The Return Of The Son Of Monster Magnet'.
It came with a fold-out booklet/poster with pictures of all of their releases. Neat.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - SALVEM EL BOTÀNIC

The Salvem El Botanic compilation album included Bustamante's version of FZ's 'Camarillo Brillo", previously released on the first volume of the "Unmatched" Zappa tribute series.

ELIOT LIPP - SKYWAVE

My search for The Others Of Inventions (people who do something with Frank Zappa's music) led me to Brooklyn-based electronic artist Eliot Lipp.

Eliot Lipp's 2017 "Skywave" album opens with 'I Told Ya', a track that samples Frank Zappa's 'What's New In Baltimore'.
The album got released on vinyl and on CD.

ZAPPANALE FLASH-BACK

Here's a warm-up for the upcoming 'remote edition' of Zappanale :

The Z3 with Ed Mann.
2015.

THE PAPER CAT UPDATE

I mentioned Paper Cat a little while ago. It's an occasional collaboration project by Julie Slick, Eric Slick and Robbie 'Seahag' Mangano.
Julie and Eric both and recorded with Adrian Belew and Seahag performed with Project/Object and with The Grandmothers, to name a few.

In 2009 (!!), the three of them did a gig at John and Peter's. It got released on Bandcamp at the time.

Last month, Julie added a CDR version of these recordings to her Bandcamp page. Limited edition of 100 copies, hand-drawn artwork.
And she added a second album called "Buttered Noodles". Same trio but recorded in the Slick Studio. Also in a limited edition with hand-drawn artwork.

True, the music sounds great but these CDR's are real pieces of art !
Number 11 and number 9 arrived at the United Mutations HQ in Belgium last week and are treasured.

LES YEUX DE LA TËTE - MOSCA VIOLENTA

The third album from French experimental rock ensemble Les Yeux De La Tête was called "Mosca Violenta".
It was around the same time they changed the band name to Mosca Violenta, so maybe this is was the first album by Mosca Violenta, entitled "Les Yeux De La Tête". Who knows?

Energetic, angular rock.
Perfect.
From 2013, but it sounds like it could be released tomorrow.

Here's the rather dark 'Sloomer' :

available from Head Records

or from Mandaï

SOFT MACHINE - LIVE AT THE BAKED POTATO

  • soft machine: live at the baked potato
        (2020, cd, usa, moonjune records)
After a 37 year hiatus, Soft Machine released "Hidden Details" in 2018.
It was followed by a world tour by John Etheridge (electric guitar), Roy Babbington (bass guitar), John Marshall (drums) and Theo Travis (saxophones, flute, Fender Rhodes piano) in 2018 and 2019.

"Live At The Baked Potato" got recorded during this tour, in February 2019.
It got released on vinyl (200 numbered copies each on transparent, blue and marbled vinyl), on CD, and as a digital download.

The album shows the band in fine shape. Great tunes are enriched with beautiful, lyrical improvisations. Timeless.
I love the full sound, created by just four instruments. These musicians understand the fine balance between taking the space and giving it to someone else.
Recommended listening.

Check it out at Bandcamp :

NEW RELEASE BY ADAM MINKOFF

Guitarist / vocalist in Dweezil Zappa's "Zappa Plays Zappa" band.

AKINETÓN RETARD

Akinetón Retard is a rock quintet from Chile.
I recently got hold of their first two albums.
Both discs can be found on YouTube, although I'm quite happy with my CDs

Here's their first album. From 2001 !

The sound of the band did evolve through the years.
Here's an example from 2015 :

NOLAN COOK & HARRY ELEKTRON

Facebook told me that Nolan Cook contributed to an album by Harry Elektron.

Discogs confirmed :

CONCORDIA CHAMBER ENSEMBLE - CONCORDIA CHAMBER ENSEMBLE

On their eponymous album, the Concordia Chamber Ensemble, featuring the Sirius String Quartet, conducted by Marin Alsop, performed a ‘Tribute’ suite in three pieces. Composed by Peter Homas, the ‘Tribute’ opens with ‘Frank’, a musical tribute to Frank Zappa.
It also quotes 'King Kong'.
Quite appropriate.

SANDRO OLIVA - CICCIO / SAUNA

I recently got hold of this 2 track promotional CDR single by Sandro Oliva.
The liner notes say 'Both songs are alternate mixes of the ones included in the "Heavy Lightnings" CD.

As far as I know, "Heavy Lightnings" got released in 2004 and it didn't include any of those two tracks. But then again, maybe there was an earlier version of "Heavy Lightnings" that I still need to discover.
'Ciccio' and 'Sauna'. Two fine zappa-eque tracks that feature none other than Jimmy Carl Black on percussion.
Nice.

Sandro Oliva for those of you who might not know him, toured and recorded with Jimmy Carl Black, Don Preston and Bunk Gardner as The Grandmothers, but he also released some great music before and after that.
He also played a memorable concert at Zappanale (with Tim op het Broek on vocals). Who remembers that ?

FLASHBACK TO ZAPPANALE 2007 WITH TRIGON

Guitar power trio Trigon performed at Zappanale in 2007.
The band released a part of this concert on DVD (in 2008).
Fun.

The band performed FZ's 'Filthy Habits' during this gig. The songs did not make it to the DVD, but it's still an excellent concert to see again.

CABALLERO REYNALDO - ANTOLOGIA VOL. 1 & 2

Luis G., better known as Caballero Reynaldo, recently released two anthology albums.
They're both available as downloads on Bandcamp, but Luis has produced a small number of CD's as well.
Celebrating his 25 years as Caballero Reynaldo, Luis had a lot of material available for these anthologies. The result is a nice mix and both albums do include a couple of FZ tunes.

PIERRE VERVLOESEM - PONOROGO (THE ART OF GOING SOMEWHERE)

Pierre Vervloesem is keeping his promise to release an album every month.
His June release is called "Ponorogo (The Art Of Going Somewhere)", after a region in Indonesia, presenting one 43-minute piece !!
Beautiful.

Bandcamp adds:
From his 'The Art of Going Nowhere' to his new album 'the Art of going Somewhere' Pierre is demonstrating again all his craftsmanship when composing a 45 minutes piece of music. All his science and technique of mixing guitars, heavy basses and synthesizers is this time associated with Indonesian radio captations which add this time the spices to a road going Somewhere! A thrilling adventure as always with Pierre!

Check it out !
Your perfect road trip in these Covid-19 times.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - SEE AND HEAR - FAST FORWARD

Another nice addition to the Others Of Invention series.

This “See And Hear” promotional album got released in 1999. It presented musical excerpts by composers featured in forthcoming Fast Forward events. The CD included several Frank Zappa compositions, two of which were performed by the Britten Sinfonia, broadcast on BBC radio on June 17, 1998 : 'Igor's Boogie' and 'G-Spot Tornado'.

Looking for a YouTube movie with the Britten Sinfonia, I came across their collaboration with Jaga Jazzist :

VARIOUS ARTISTS - ISOTEK - THE ULTIMATE SYSTEM SET-UP DISC

The Opus 3 record label provided this CD as an insert for issue 351 of the German Hi Fi Choice magazine in 2011.
Intended to set up the Hi Fi installation, this album also included the Omnibus Wind Ensemble performing Frank Zappa's 'Dog Breath / Uncle Meat'.

The disc even got a re-issue with Audio Magazine in 2018 (with a slightly altered album cover, but with the same tracks !!)

VARIOUS ARTISTS - THANK YOU FOR BEING YOU (PROMO)

Frank Blake is duo: Norman Blake on vocals, bass, guitar, keyboards and percussion, plus Francis Macdonald on drums, vocals, keyboards, guitar and percussion. They recorded Frank Zappa's 'Anyway The Wind Blows' for a Shoeshine Records compilation album that got released in 1997 !
The track resurfaced on "Thank You For Being You", a compilation that got released in 2007 on the Electric Honey label.
This promotion CDR release came in a plastic sleeve with a paper insert.

NEW MUSIC BY ARTHUR BARROW AND LARRY KLIMAS

Arthur Barrow says:
My 2 man band with Larry Klimas, MVP=X, has released our first recording, "Martian Sunset." It is a very abstract piece, using a resonant piano technique, among other things. Thanks to Bob Rice for his mastering magic. Enjoy!

ALAMAAILMAN VASARAT - HUURO KOLKKO

  • alamaailman vasarat: huuro kolkko
        (2009, cd, europe, laskeuma)
Eclectic madness from Finland.
Alamaailman Vasarat's "Huuro Kolkko" is another gem.

VUELVETELOCA - SONORA

  • vuelveteloca: sonora
(2017, cd, uk, fuzz club records)
Santiago, Chile based stoner rock.band Vuelveteloca released their first album in 2009.
"Sonora" is their fourth (or fifth?) release (from 2017) and it sounds pretty impressive.

A great discovery.

Check it out !!

SUN RA - HELIOCENTRIC WORLDS 1 & 2 REVISITED

Another Sun Ra reissue appeared a couple of months ago.
The album combines the two "Heliocentric Worlds" albums on one CD.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - LET'S PARTY! RAMBA ZAMBA 93

My search for Frank Zappa cover versions brought me to "Let's Party! Ramba Zamba 93", an Austrian radio hit compilation album from 1993.
It included Ostbahn Kurti's German version of FZ's 'Bobby Brown'.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - SE IL CIELO FOSSE CARTA

Paolo Lotti's version of FZ's 'Muffin Man' can be found on the "Sonora" magazine CD, released in 1994.
On year later, the track got re-issued on the Se Il Cielo Fosse Carta album, an album that got released in remembrance of the victims of WWII.

ZAPPA - THE MOTHERS 1970

I received this brand-new Zappa album yesterday.

  • alamaailman vasarat: maahan

The last couple of days, I have been enjoying several albums by Alamaailman Vasarat, the Finnish avant-garde ensemble.
"Maahan" got released in 2007 and presents again Alamaailman Vasarat's eclectic mix of rock, folk and jazz.
I love the crazy rhythms.

THIERRY MAILLARD ZAPPA TRIBUTE ON HIS 2016 "ETHNIC SOUNDS" ALBUM

"Ethnic Sounds" is an album by the Thierry Maillard Trio with Philharmonic Orchestra (the Prague Philharmonic to be exact).
It includes Thierry's 'Zappa' piece, with beautiful guitar lines by Nguyen Le.

The title piece :

-- info: Danny Mathys

TATVAMASI - HALDUR BILDUR

  • tatvamasi: haldur bildur
        (2019, cd, poland, audio cave)
Mixing jazz and rock with an ethnic flavour, Polish band Tatvamasi's "Haldur Bildur" album sounds fabulous.
This is the kind of music that brings a smile on my face.

"Haldur Bildur" is the quartet's latest album, released in 2019!
http://www.tatvamasi.pl/

A Polish quartet performing instrumental rock music enhanced by the tenderness of jazz, dimmed with psychedelic mist, distorTed with tensions of underground. Music built on twisted riffs, seducing pulsations, intriguing improvisations, fictitious images, magical stories. Music of the third ear.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - TOP OF THE DIAL - A SWINGIN' TRIP THROUGH 60S KIWI RADIO

This “Top Of The Dial” compilation album got released in New Zealand in 2004.
It included New Zealand blues rock band The Underdogs’ version of Frank Zappa’s ‘Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance’, retitled ‘There Will Come A Time’ and originally released on 7” in 1969.
Another addition to "The Others Of Invention".
http://www.united-mutations.com/z/frank_zappa/fz_ooi_albums.htm

THIERRY MAILLARD BIG BAND - ZAPPA FOREVER

The album cover might be a bit misleading as the Thierry Maillard Big Band does not perform the music of Frank Zappa on "Zappa Forever".
All compositions are by Thierry Maillard. Modern big band jazz, in the spirit of and in tribute to Frank Zappa although the first track does sample a Frank Zappa interview.

I do like the album a lot.
Apparently his third release after "Ethnic Sounds" with the Prague Symphony Orchestra (2015) and "Pursuit Of Happines" (2018).

Love the packaging / artwork (by Mister K) !
