JOHN ZORN / NEW MASADA QUARTET - VOL.2

  • john zorn / new masada quartet: vol. 2
        (2023, cd, USA, tzadik)
John Zorn's New Masada Quartet recently returned with "Vol. 2".
  • John Zorn - alto sax
  • Julian Lage - guitar
  • Jorge Roeder - bass
  • Kenny Wollesen - drums
True, exploring the Masada songbook most probably is a never-ending story but this "Vol. 2" album is an essential part of the Zorn discography.

Here's some live impressions from a 2022 concert :

JONATHAN SCHLACKMAN

Composer Jonathan Schlackman recorded and released four zappa-esque pieces through Bandcamp.

Jonathan added:
Using some of the compositional techniques Frank Zappa employed when writing his "serious" music (in truth it's all over his work), I composed some stuff too. While it's not nearly at that level, it is somewhat Zappaesque.

PIERRE VERVLOESEM - EXPECTED NOISES

  • pierre vervloesem: expected noises
        (2023, streaming/download, --, bandcamp
"Expected Noises" is the complete reconstruction from the English band Brian Brain sole album "Unexpected noises" released in 1980 on Secret Records. It was the band of Martin Clive Atkins, drummer for Public Image Limited for the albums "Metal Box," "Flowers of Romance," "Commercial Zone" and "This Is What You Want...".

For this project Pierre asked his faithful friend Bruno Vansina to play a handful of saxes and divers instruments. Jordi Geuens (drummer of Selah Sue) added his drums and Gaëlle F her vocals to arrive to a perfect hit album mixing new-wave, post-punk and modernity from 2023!

  • Gaëlle F. : vocals
  • Bruno Vansina : saxes, flûtes, castagnets, melodica, megaphone, glockenspiel, ship bell, clarinet, percussion, xun.
  • Jordi Geuens : drums
  • PV : bass, guit, keys, vocs
The result sounds wonderful.
Recommended listening !!

For those unfamiliar with the original album artwork of the Brian Brain release :

JACOB BOOTE - CASSETTE BEEF MELON BALLS

  • Jacob Boote: Cassette Beef Melon Balls
        (2022, streaming / download, --, bandcamp)
Multi-instrumentalist, Jacob Boote’s music is strongly influenced by the music of Frank Zappa.
Several pieces on his "Cassette Beef Melon Balls" album were inspired by FZ compositions. (I’m The Slime, Wonderful Wino,…)
'Mandarins' even includes a (very short) snippet of Inca Roads in the guitar solo.

Check it out ! It's great.

FRANK ZAPPA THE NORDIC STORIES

"Frank Zappa - The Nordic Stories" is getting its 5th update / 5th edition.

We are waiting for some additional stuff that will complete the book. Personally, this is the best book of all the versions. IT WILL NOT deviate much from the 4th edition. We did find a couple of holes regarding early and late show dates. Adding: unpublished anecdote, some additional stuff to some of the stories and a bunch of unseen photos. The finances is NOT optimal but the document is so fuc..ing important that it has to be gathered between the sleeves. Only a 100-120 copies will be available. Some to all who have pre-ordered. Some copies goes to Libraries, there will be a few copies available at one or two record stores in Norway. The rest is available here.

NORMIL HAWAIIANS - DARK WORLD (79 - 81)

  • normil hawaiians: dark world (79 - 81)
(2021, lp, uk, upset! the rhythm)
Formed 1979 in Orpington, Greater London, England, UK, Normil Hawaiians were an ever-changing collective based around guitarist / vocalist Guy Smith.
May 20, 1980, the band recorded a session at the BBC studios for John Peel's radio show. The recording included 'Uncle Green Genes', the band's take of FZ's 'Mr. Green Genes'. The session got its first broadcast on BBC Radio 1 in June of the same year.
The Peel Session got included on Normil Hawaiians' "Dark World (79 - 81)" album. It was made available on LP and on CD.
In 2022 it got released for download & streaming through Bandcamp.

BLACK FLOWER IN CONCERT

Black Flower will be performing a concert at the Paradox jazz club in Tilburg, NL, on April 8, 2023.

Reason enough to give their latest album another spin...

Here's 'O Fogo', from their latest "Magma" release :

ORPHEI DRÄNGER - CAPRICER MED OD - DEL 9: 2003-2005

  • Orphei Drängar: Capricer Med OD - Del 9, 2003 - 2005
(2011, cd, Sweden, sångsällskapet orphei drängar)
The Swedish male choir and singing society Orphei Dränger got founded in 1853 (yes, that's eighteen fifty-three) at the Uppsala university.

In 2011, they released highlights from their 2003 to 2005 concerts. The album included Peter Carlsson’s guest appearance during the 2005 concert, performing ‘Mystiska Mannen’, a Swedish version of FZ’s ‘Cosmic Debris’, that Peter Carlsson had initially recorded for his 1994 “Carlsson På Scen” album.

The album itself is OK. Sound quality is a bit of a problem as the recordings were taken from various sources, some of these not being of high quality.
The included 'Mystiska Mannen' / 'Cosmik Debris' is a nice version but I would have liked the choir to be more up front...

Nevertheless, another fine addition to "The Others Of Invention".

GRAHAM COLLIER - DOWN ANOTHER ROAD

  • graham collier: down another road
        (2023, download, uk, bandcamp)
The Graham Collier Sextet recorded in concert at the Stockholms Jazzdagar 1969.

From the liner notes:
Previously unreleased recording of bassist/composer Graham Collier's seminal British jazz album 'Down Another Road' recorded live in 1969 at Stockholm's Jazz Day festival, his all-star sextet includes jazz heavyweights Harry Beckett, Stan Sulzmann, Karl Jenkins and John Marshall.

Since it's release in 1969 on Fontana, 'Down Another Road' has become a cornerstone of British jazz, with the LP now a much sought-after rarity that regularly exchanges hands for over £200. It's considered the revered composer Collier's greatest album by many of its fans, thanks to its highly melodic, almost pop-like themes and irresistible '60s groove, spurred on by the on-point drumming of Soft Machine/Nucleus drummer John Marshall.

Beautiful !
  • Graham Collier: double bass
  • Harry Beckett: trumpet, flugelhorn
  • Nick Evans: trombone
  • Stan Sulzmann: tenor and alto saxophone
  • Karl Jenkins: oboe, piano
  • John Marshall: drums

About 35 minutes into the interview, The Real Music Observer mentions Frank Zappa...

SCOTT PARKER - THE MOTHER PEOPLE ANTHOLOGY VOL.1

Scott Parker is releasing another book !

"The Mother People Anthology Vol.1"

Scott added:
"Here it is at last, folks...more than ten years in the making, THE MOTHER PEOPLE ANTHOLOGY reprints all 39 issues of what I personally consider to be the greatest-ever Frank Zappa fanzine, MOTHER PEOPLE! This 'zine was created and edited by ROB CERRETA -- wit, raconteur, bon vivant, bootlegger and writer of no little talent. This series (this is the first of three) is a loving tribute to Rob and his work. For more of Rob's story, check out the book THE ZAPPA SUPPLEMENT, which can be purchased at this very website.
This volume covers the first 13 issues of this glorious publication, which ran from 1981 to 1989. It's a time capsule, custom-made for anyone who wonders what it was like to be a Frank Zappa fan in the 1980s. Oh and but also, the original tiny, eeny weeny little print of the fanzines has been enlarged to make it easier my old eyes like mine to enjoy. Hotcha!"

THEY SAVED ZAPPA'S MOUSTACHE

from the liner notes :
This program, 'They Saved Zappa's Moustache' (also known as 'Zapped' as coined by co-creator of the program Don Joyce of Negativland) is the full, official, re-mastered release of this sound collage show mixed live on the air by Don Joyce and Phineas Narco (of The National Cynical Network).

It was broadcast in March of 1995 on Negativland's KPFA radio show, 'Over the Edge'. It is an almost 5-hour experimental remix of, and tribute to, Frank Zappa and his music. The program primarily focused on the music Frank Zappa created early on in his career. It is available for the first time in lossless (and other) formats on a name-your-own-price basis at The National Cynical Network's Bandcamp site.

Released through Bandcamp in 2012.

A KOENJIHYAKKEI UPDATE

Just a short note to mention that Skin Graft has been re-issuing the Koenjihyakkei albums.

"Dhorimviskha", the band's most recent album, from 2018.

"Angherr Shisspa", originally released in 2005 on both the Magaibutus and the Skin Graft labels, got a re-issue in 2019 with three bonus tracks.

"Nivraym",, from 2001, recently got reissued with three bonus (live) tracks.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - APPETIZERS FOR 2003

  • various artists: appetizers for 2003
        (2003, cd, usa, favored nations)
I recently stumbled upon this 2003 sampler and bought it because it included The Banned From Utopia.

It was only when I took a closer look that I noticed that it included the BFU's 'So Yuh Don't Like Modern Art', one of the (few) non-Zappa pieces from their album with the same title.
Still, a nice little sampler.

PIERRE VAN DORMAEL - VIVACES

  • pierre van dormael: vivaces
        (2001, cd, Belgium, igloo)
The late guitarist and composer Pierre Van Dormael is best-known for the soundtracks he did for films like "Toto Le Héros" and "Le Huitième Jour".
Less known is that, in 1989, Pierre started Nasa Na with Fabrizio Cassol, Michel Hatzigeorgiou and Stéphane Galland, a short-lived band that preceded Aka Moon.

Pierre only made a handful of albums, including the beautiful "Vivaces" one from 2001.

KJELL GUSTAVSSON RHYTHM 'N' BLUES ORCHESTRA - FIFTY / FIFTY

  • Kjell Gustavsson And The Rhythm ‘n’ Blues Orchestra feat. Peter Carlsson: Fifty / Fifty
(2018, cd, sweden, kg music production)
Swedish drummer Kjell Gustavsson started The Rhythm ‘n’ Blues Orchestra in 2008. The band has released several albums since then. Their 2018 “Fifty / Fifty” album had them team up with Peter Carlsson.

As a result, the recording included the Rhythm 'n' Blues Orchestra's version of ‘Mystiska Mannen’, a Swedish version of FZ’s ‘Cosmic Debris’, that Peter Carlsson had initially recorded for his 1994 “Carlsson Pa Scen” album.

JACOB BOOTE - JAKEY'S MIRAGE

  • Jacob Boote: Jakey’s Mirage
    (2020, cassette, Australia, private release)
From the liner notes of Jacob Boote’s “Jakey’s Mirage” album:
The Jakey’s Mirage story wasn’t planned as such but was the result of spending to much time with some cheap giveaway instruments and homemade apple jack in my dusty old shed via some weird nostalgic cassette fetishism. It follows Lil’ Jakey in an imaged story that runs somewhat parallel with Jacob’s journey though the COVID epidemic and lockdown and is somewhat reminiscent of Frank Zappa’s album Joes Garage.

Well, I really enjoyed listening to this album.
There’s the Central Scrutinizer voice overs and several tracks were inspired by FZ compositions (The Torture Never Stops, Heavy Duty Judy, Love Of My Life,...).

The album cover of features Frank Zappa in his “We’re Only In It For The Money” outfit.
And the album title is in line with Joe's "Corsage", "XMasage" or "Menage". Nice!
Out on cassette in a limited edition of 30 copies, and I guess I bought the last available copy.
But also available for streaming and download through Bandcamp !!

Lo-fi madness. I love it.
Another fine addition to "The Others Of Invention".

Check it out!!

ALIENO DEBOOTES - UNCONVENTIONAL RESIDENTS II

  • alieno debootes: unconventional residents II
        (2023, cd, austria, klanggalerie)
What makes The Residents sound as The Residents?
Is it the simple keyboard / synthesizer melody lines? The recognizable vocals? Is it the fact that it all sounds deconstructed? Stripped down to the essence?

Alieno deBootes (Alessandro Pizzin) has the answer. He recently released the second volume of "Unconventional Residents", the sequel to the 2022 album.

On "Unconventional Residents", most of the pieces are by The Eyeballed Ones. Performed as a rock band, including solo spots for the participating musicians.
The arrangements are fabulous and the sound is great.
And I came across quite a number of familiar names: Roberto Marchetto (Lagunable), Franco Moruzzi (I Fratelli Di Mascia aka De Break A Dabrians, Ruins), Christophe Godin (Mörglbl), Dave Newhouse (The Muffins), Ken Field (Birdsongs Of The Mesozoic),...

This is great ! It swings. It rocks. And it's funny.
I love it.

Essential listening. And not only for Eyeball Buddies.

LARRY KUTCHER

From GlassOnyonPR

Pianist/Composer Larry Kutcher Releases Debut Album For Solo Piano “Kindred Souls” Balancing Technical Virtuosity With Raw Emotional Expression

Having been a session musician for over 20 years, playing, writing, and arranging on other artist’s albums, pianist/composer Larry Kutcher decided it was time to release his own music. His debut album for solo piano entitled “Kindred Souls” was released on March 1st. Each of the album’s 10 tracks tells a personal story, an audio diary of the highly personal journey that led to this debut release.

Says Larry, “This debut album has been nine years in the making. I first intended to release it in 2014, but then life took me on an unexpected roller coaster ride of one serious health crisis after another. As a result, I had to put it on hold for long periods of time. Each piece on the album expresses a unique emotional and spiritual aspect of my nine-year odyssey. Written, recorded, and produced by me in my home studio, much of this music came through me instantaneously and was captured as such. My best work happens when I get out of the way and just let the music flow through me!”

Larry Kutcher began his musical odyssey with the study of classical violin at the age of six. He moved on from there to the drums and guitar, eventually settling on the piano, with which he could more fully realize and express all the music flowing through him.

Influenced by Surrealism, The Beat Poets, The Firesign Theatre, and Frank Zappa, in particular, Larry also developed theatrical and comedic skills. This led him to recording and performing with Zappa alumni, guitarist Steve Vai. You can hear Larry’s stream of consciousness performance art piece “Little Pieces Of Seaweed” on Steve Vai’s CD/EP “Flex-Able Leftovers”.

An aficionado of Prog Rock as well, Larry helped co-write “The Emperor’s Clothes” with Alan and Neal Morse of Spock’s Beard, for their 2010 CD release of Spock’s Beard “X”.

Larry’s extensive musical explorations throughout the years have helped him become very well versed in a variety of genres including classical, jazz, progressive rock, ambient soundscapes, musical theater, and film scores. He is best known for his powerful and intensely personal solo piano work, balancing technical virtuosity with raw emotional expression.

BUD SHANK - MAGICAL MYSTERY

  • bud shank: magical mystery
(1968, lp, usa, world pacific records)
Saxophone player and arranger Bud Shank released "Magical Mystery" in 1968.
Re-released on CD in 2010.
As the title predicts, there are quite a number of Beatles tunes to be found on this album.
As are John Guerin, Gary Barone and Dennis Budimir, who all three recorded with FZ.

ELECTRIC MASADA - AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS

  • electric masada: at the mountains of madness
        (2005, 2cd, usa, tzadic)
Electric Masada is one of John Zorn's many projects.

"At The Mountains Of Madness" is the second album by the Electric Masada band. The album presents two discs. The first one recorded live in Moscow in 2004, the second on in Ljubljana the same year.

Featuring John Zorn, Joey Baron, Marc Ribot and Trevor Dunn, just to name half of the octet, the ensemble combines hard bop power and speed with beautiful solos and melodies.

It's pretty remarkable that the both shows have more or less the same setlist, yet the music sounds so different.
Wonderful.

TREVOR TOMKINS - FOR FUTURE REFERENCE

  • trevor tomkins' sextant: for future reference
(2023, cd, uk, jazz in brittain)
Never-before-released early 1980s sessions by a band of top British players and composers which never released an album, led by drummer Trevor Tomkins. This is, in effect, the late Trevor Tomkins debut album release as leader, as well as his memorial. We were working on this with Trevor when he died last last year and it's now released with the help and support of his family.

Recorded between1980 and 1983, the sessions featured Trevor Tomkins (drums), Chris Pyne (trombone), Phil Lee (guitar), John Horler (piano) and Paul Bridge (bass), plus Jimmy Hastings (sax & flute) on the 1980/1981 sessions, and Brian Smith (sax & flute) on the 1982/1983 sessions.

moe. - WARTS AND ALL VOLUME TWO

  • moe.: warts and all volume two
        (2002, 3cd, usa, fatboy records)
About a month ago, I wrote:
Jamband moe.'s guitar player inserted a snippet of FZ's 'Inca Roads' during some of the live performances of 'Four' !! (around 11 minutes into the song)

An example of this can be found on the "Warts And All Volume Two" 3 CD set that got released on the Fatboy Records label in 2002.

The album presents a recording of the February 23, 2002 concert at The Tabernacle in Atlanta, GA.
3 CD digipack release on Fatboy Recors (moe.'s label).

THE BERLINER PHILHARMONIKER

Following measures taken by the Federal and regional authorities in Germany to contain the corona pandemic, the Philharmonie Berlin will be closed from 2 to 30 November 2020. In view of this, the Berliner Philharmoniker and their chief conductor Kirill Petrenko added another work, 4‘33‘‘ by John Cage, to their concert from 31 October.

Quite the statement.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - FARMER & THE OWL - FAMILY VALUES

  • various artists: farmer & the owl - family values
(2020, cd, australia, farmer & the owl records)
The “Family Values” compilation album that got released by the Farmer & The Owl record label in 2020 included Tumbleweed’s recording of FZ’s ‘Trouble Every Day’.
I knew about the standard black vinyl edition, and of the blue and orange splatter vinyl as both were available from the label's Bandcamp page, but apparently, the album was also made available on CD (from the label's website).

WILMA ARCHER - A WESTERN CIRCULAR

  • wilma archer: a western circular
(2020, lp, uk, weird world records)
The excellent "A Western Circular" has been mentioned a couple of times already on this blog.
Released on CD and on LP, there have also been LP re-issues on clear vinyl and, more recently, on creamy white vinyl, the latter being an "I Love Record Stores" edition.

It did take me a bit of time to track down a copy on creamy white vinyl, but it looks and sounds great !

Check out 'Scarecrow', Wilma Archer's reworking of Frank Zappa's 'Black Napkins'.

ODIN - SWF SESSION 1973

  • Odin: SWF Session 1973
    (2022, cd, Russia, long hair)
The Long Hair record label released Odin’s “SWF Session 1973” on CD in 2007. The disc included recordings of FZ’s ‘King Kong’ and ‘Oh No’.
The album got a vinyl re-issue in 2020 with a live version of FZ’s ‘Oh No’ as a bonus track.

The CD got an unofficial Russian re-release in 2022.
The Russian CD label had different colours and a white ring in the middle.

PEANUT BUTTER WOLF'S 2K8 B-BALL ZOMBIE WAR

Producer and presenter Peanut Butter Wolf included MF Doom and Guilty Simpson’s reworking of J Dilla’s ‘Mash’ in his “2K8 B-Ball Zombie War” compilation album.
Released in 2007.
J Dilla's 'Mash' and MF Doom's reworking both sampled FZ's 'Dance Contest'.

The album cover and back-cover artwork switched places for the 2LP and the CD version.

AKA MOON - QUALITY OF JOY

  • aka moon: quality of joy
        (2023, cd, bel, outhere music)
The latest album by Aka Moon is entitled "Quality Of Joy". And although the title of the album as well as the names of the individual pieces sound a bit mellow and new age, those who will acquire this music to be used as background music for their weekly meditative yoga session to clear their head, will get quite a surprise.

Aka Moon is a Belgian jazz trio.
Fabrizio Cassol:alto sax - Michel Hatzigeorgiou: Fender bass - Stéphane Galland: drums.
They have been pushing boundaries for over thirty years: applying new ways to improvise and to interact as a trio, but also exploring new musical cultures, collaborating with artists from all over the world.

"Quality Of Joy" is a continuation of this journey. The guest musicians, aptly called The Orchestral Constellation, fit in perfectly: contributing but still keeping their distinctive sound.

Fabrizio Cassol is playing his 'B half flat key' saxophone throughout the album.
Listen to 'Where Are The Angels?', where the saxophone fuses with Claron McFaddon's vocals.

I've seen Aka Moon at Jazz Middelheim last summer where they performed as a quartet with João Barradas, enjoyed their 30th anniversary concert with the Brussels Jazz Orchestra a couple of weeks ago, and now there's this new album.
Impressive each and every time.

POIL - DINS O CUOL

While waiting for the Poil Ueda album that should arrive in my mailbox any day now, I thought I'd give "Dins O Cuol" another spin.
I bought the vinyl 2018 re-issue a couple of years ago, but some copies of the actual CD EP turned up for sale  recently, which made me quite happy.

Released ten (!!) years ago already !

Poil is playing in Brussels tomorrow.
I might go to hellhole Brussels. Haven't decided yet.

SAVOLDELLI, CASARANO & BARDOSCI - THE GREAT JAZZ GIG IN THE SKY

  • savoldelli, casarano, bardoscia: the great gig in the sky
        (2016, cd, usa, moonjune)
Boris Savoldelli: all vocals, vocal noises and electronics
  Raffaele Casarano: saxes and electronics
Marco Bardoscia: double bass and electronics
guests:
Dewa Budjana: guitars on 'Us and Them'

Boris Savoldelli, Raffaele Casarano and Marco Bardoscia took it upon themselves to perform an impossible task: performing and recording Pink Floyd's "Dark Side Of The Moon".

Released in March in 1973, "Dark Side Of The Moon" is celebrating quite an anniversary this month.
Reason enough for Moonjune Records to put the Savoldelli / Casarano / Bardoscia reworking that got released in 2016 back in the spotlight.

My ears always need some time to get used to Boris' vocals, but in this setting it works fine.
"The Great Jazz Gig In The Sky" is more a re-imagination than just a rendition or a jazzy reworking.
Nice.
Give it a try :

HAWKLORDS - LIVE AT KOZFEST 2022

  • hawklords: live at kozfest 2022
        (2022, cd, uk, hawklords)
Listening to some space rock is a perfect way to get the energy level up in the morning.
Here's what Discogs says about the Hawklords:

Active between 1978 and 1979, Hawklords were an offshoot from a recently disbanded Hawkwind and originally featured Hawkwind members Robert Calvert, Dave Brock and Simon King with the addition of Harvey Bainbridge, Martin Griffin and ex-Pilot keyboard player Steve Swindells.

By 1979, Steve Swindells and Robert Calvert had left, whilst Dave Brock, Simon King and Harvey Bainbridge were joined by Huw Lloyd-Langton and Tim Blake in 1979 in a newly reformed Hawkwind.

In 2009, the Hawklords re-formed without Dave Brock, consisting of ex-members Steve Swindells, Martin Griffin and Harvey Bainbridge and joined by other ex-Hawkwind members such as Nik Turner, Alan Davey, Adrian Shaw, Jerry Richards, Ron Tree, Terry Ollis and is set to also include Bridget Wishart.

Recorded at Kozfest in 2022, this album features Jerry Richards (guitar, vocals), Chris Purdon (keyboards), Mr Dibs (bass, vocals), Dave Pearce (drums) and guest Paul Woodwright (guitar).

"Live At Kozfest 2022":

Recorded live at Kozfest 2022 where Hawklords headlined the closing night of this quintessentially British festival at Axminster Showground, Devon, in the UK.
A sold-out crowd packed the Daevid Allen Kozmik Stage to thrill to a set that included the title track of the band's 2012 recording debut, We Are One, and a heartfelt version of Ghost In My Machine from the 2017 SIX album, alongside Devil In Your Head from 2018's Brave New World, plus a twisted performance of One Way Trip from 2019's Heaven's Gate, and a rocking version of fans' favourite, SR-71, from the Fusion album of 2016.
Also included in this set of blistering performances were three songs from 2021's Time album: set opener, Speed of Sound; pop classic, Turn You On; and the dark-edged poem of the metaphysical, Obscura.
And the set would not have been complete without a grinding rendition of Robert Calvert's AI-inspired masterpiece, Robot, alongside Nik Turner's space-rock classic Master of the Universe.

An excellent start of the day.

Meanwhile, here at New Ralph Too we're looking ahead to the ongoing pREServed series. An 'American Composers Series' box set looks likely, and as we speak The Residents are revisiting 'Demons Dance Alone' and 'Animal Lover' - you can expect the usual raft of previously unheard recordings, remastered albums and impossibly insightful sleevenotes, possibly by the end of this year.

And what else is happening? Well, word is The Residents are already plotting at least two new albums, overseeing a forthcoming 'Sam's Enchanted Evening' release, allowing themselves to be filmed for a proposed documentary and contemplating the possible revival of UWEB (!?!). Busy day! Oh, and they've also just announced the release of 'Our Finest Flowers' on vinyl for this year's Record Store Day extravaganza. We've also received what claims to be a first draft of something called 'Leftovers Again?! AGAIN?!?!?!?', but that could well be a practical joke only the group themselves find funny. It wouldn't be the first time.

PICTURES FROM THE ANTON CORBIJN EXPO

I still haven't visited the Anton Corbijn expo.
There's probably about one month left...

But I did receive some fine snapshots : Anton Corbijn as FZ.
Anton did a series where he pictured himself (literally) as John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix, Elvis, Kurt Cobain,... and also Frank Zappa.

Founded in 2009 on the initiative of the Fondazione Musica per Roma and directed by Tonino Battista, the PMCE Parco della Musica Contemporanea Ensemble is a unique institutional reality in Italy. With a variable formation, the ensemble is able to interpret the manifold richness of today's music, successfully confronting the repertoire of classics and other music.

In the first part of the season Contemporanea 2023, the PMCE will present Music for Two Pianos, with pieces for two pianos by John Adams, Frank Zappa and Steve Reich (30 March), Daniele Ghisi's music video work An Experiment With Time (reloaded) on the occasion of the Festival of Sciences (20 April), the tribute to Luciano Berio centred on the most significant pieces of his chamber music production (4 May), and the performance of The Yellow Shark, by Frank Zappa, with the narrator David Moss (13 June).

MOTHERLY LOVE

WIGWAM - FAIRYPORT

  • Wigwam: Fairyport
    (2022, 2cd, Finland, svart records)
    (2022, 4lp, Finland, svart records)
Finnish progressive rock band Wigwam formed in 1968. They released their third album, “Fairyport”, in 1971.
To celebrate the 51st anniversary of “Fairyport”, it got re-issued as a ‘deluxe edition’ in 2022, including previously unreleased live material.
This bonus material included Wigwam’s version of FZ’s ‘Peaches En Regalia’, recorded in concert at the Gyllene Cirkeln in Stockholm, Sweden, on December 16, 1970, where they performed it as part of a medley.
This anniversary edition was made available as a 2 CD set but also as an extremely pretty and impressive 4 LP box with four separate albums, the latter limited to 1 000 copies.

Another fine addition to "The Others Of Invention".

ARTI & MESTIERI - ESSENTIA - LIVE IN JAPAN

  • Arti & Mestieri: Essentia (Live In Japan)
        (2020, 2cd+dvd, Italy, warner music)

Here's a recent discovery, thanks to Facebook.

On May 18, 2019, Italian prog / jazz-rock band Arti & Mestieri (Arts & Crafts) performed at the Jazz Rock Legends festival in Japan.
During the encores, Arti & Mestieri was joined on stage by Patrizio Fariselli's Area Open Project to perform two additional pieces, one of which was FZ’s ‘King Kong’.
The concert got released as a 2 CD / DVD package.
The CDs and the DVD were packed in a slipcase as mini LP sleeves and accompanied by a 16-page booklet.
Arti & Mestieri's rendition of 'King Kong' got included on both the CDs and on the DVD.

At least as important is that the entire album is amazing.
Recommended listening.
