THE NEXT EPISODE OF THE "MUSIC ACROSS" RADIO SHOW FOCUSSES ON NAPOLEON MURPHY BROCK, HAMBURG & ZAPPANALE
Every first Monday of the month, at 21h00 CET
RADIO ORANGE - ORANGE 94.0

Under the title "Zappa spielt für Bach" (Zappa plays for Bach), concerts have been taking place in the main church of St Katharinen in Hamburg, Germany, for several years in the run-up to the Zappanale in Bad Doberan on the Baltic Sea, in which the charismatic former Zappa musician Napoleon Murphy Brock is brought together with various ensembles to inspire with new and unusual listening experiences. In 2023, the concert was entitled "The Great American Songbook", and in addition to Zappa pieces, Frank Sinatra classics were also interpreted by Napoleon Murphy Brock with this fantastic jazz trio. In this programme you will not only hear music from this concert, but also interviews with the mastermind Sebastian Knauer, who developed the concept for this concert series, the pastor of St. Katharinen, Ann-Kathrin Brenke, and the sound engineer Ralph Kessler. This programme is, so to speak, a final review of the Zappanale 2023, which has already been reported on in 4 "Music Across" programmes, all of which can also be listened to in the Cultural Broadcasting Archive at the web address cba.media and the "Music Across" series. At the same time, this programme is also a foretaste of the next "Zappa spielt für Bach" concert in St. Katharinen on 17 July 2024 with Napoleon Murphy Brock and the Dutch ensemble "Fuse", as well as the subsequent Zappanale in Bad Doberan from 19 - 21 July 2024.

AZ IGAZI FRANK ZAPPA KÖNYV
"Az Igazi Frank Zappa Könyv", which translates into "The Real Frank Zappa Book".
This is the Hungarian version.
From 1991.
Afka.net adds:
The hungarian translation of the Real Frank Zappa Book was published quite fast, in 1990. It's publisher was József Laux, former drummer of the almost-world-famous Hungarian rock group, LGT (Locomotiv GT). Unfortunately the translation was a really fast work, so it has quite a few mistakes, and almost one-third (!!!) of the book is (and lots of pictures are) missing..
My copy is from 1991 but it only arrived last week. Apparently, it got re-issued in 2008 (with publisher name JLX printed in the below right cover).
And indeed, it's only 180 pages, and it doesn't include many pictures or drawings.
I guess I will have to learn Hungarian to enjoy this book.
A FINE ZAPPA DEAL TO BE MADE WITH CORDELIA RECORDS
For the next couple of weeks Cordelia Records is giving away a copy the "20 Extraordinary Renditions" CD (20 versions of the song "Idiot bastard Son" by the world's top Frank Zappa covers bands) to anyone who buys another full price CD directly from www.cordeliarecords.co.uk
In order to be fair to people who already own this CD you may drop me a line (jimdpie@gamail.com) and ask for something else. (As long as it is light to post - postage rates are way higher than they used to be you know).
THE BOB MOOG FOUNDATION (AND MORE)
Robeone (aka Robert Schindler) is celebrating the 90th Birthday of inventor Bob Moog and the 5th Anniversary of the Moogseum with a special nod to this founding father of the modern day synthesizer.
Moog was a pioneer in electric sound, and dedicated his life to musicians, music, and innovation. His inventions innovated the sound, usages, and sizes of synthesizers, hence establishing the brand of the Moog Synthesizer.
The Bob Moog Foundation (founded in 2006) thanks Robeone for his contributions. Says founder Michelle Moog-Koussa, “Robert has supported us in just about every way possible, from frequent financial donations to volunteering to in-kind donations to attending all of our events and purchasing all of our new merch releases. He's always the first to show up to our events, and always offers to do more.” The Moogseum and the Bob Moog Foundation online store features his CDs and vinyl; 100% of the sales of his music there and online benefit the Bob Moog Foundation.
The Moogseum, a project of the Bob Moog Foundation, opened in 2019, and has welcomed over 40,000 visitors from all over the world. Ms. Moog-Koussa says that the Bob Moog Foundation was founded after communications from “tens of thousands of people from around the world during my father's illness and passing” in 2005. “People sent us testimonials about how Bob Moog had changed their lives, and even transformed their lives, through his instruments. We felt this legacy of inspiration deserved to be carried forward to the next generation.”
Tours of the museum included viewing recent additions of rare instruments and historical materials from Bob Moog’s legacy. Visitors were allowed to play a rare Minimoog Voyager Signature Edition serial number 0176.
Robeone says, “The importance of Bob Moog’s inventions and his complete passion helped create an industry that still allows musicians to express themselves in ways we never dreamed possible. My life was changed when I heard the Moog solo at the end of ‘Lucky Man’ by Emerson Lake and Palmer. I couldn’t wait to be able to not only play one but to own one. The Minimoog was just being released, and I was saving every penny.”
Dr. Bob’s SoundSchool, the hallmark education project of the Bob Moog Foundation, teaches young children about the science of sound through music and technology . Robeone explains, “With the lack of music education in schools, it is so important to me to inspire the youth of today.” Dr. Bob’s SoundSchool has trained over 200 teachers. Over 30,000 children have been reached through Dr. Bob’s SoundSchool multi-sensory lessons.
The Moogseum is at 56 Broadway Street, Asheville, NC 28801. 828-258-1262

FRANK ZAPPA AND THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION - WHISKY A GO GO 1968
- frank zappa and the mothers of invention: whisky a go go 1968
(2024, download, --, qobuz)
From the present perspective, that is. The band, at the time, was already around for a number of years and had already recorded some amazing albums.
Halfway disc one at the moment and I love what I'm hearing.
Ray Collins on lead vocals, FZ giving some info between the songs, a nice balance between classic Zappa tunes, group improvisations, and some great doo-wop.
This is so much fun to listen to...

FRANK ZAPPA AND THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION - LIVE AT THE WHISKY A GO GO 1968 (VAULT FOOTAGE)
MAN - KINGDOM OF NOISE
- man: kingdom of noise
(2009, cd, uk, point)
Welsh rock band Man released "Kingdom Of Noise" in 2009.
I'm not really familiar with the band, so I was rather curious to give this one a listen.
Wikipedia adds: "Kingdom Of Noise" no longer featured any of the original members.
As Man formed in 1968, that didn't really come as a surprise.
That being said, this is an enjoyable album. Beautiful in its simplicity.
The title track:
PETR DORUZKA - SUPLIK PLNY ZAPPY
I've had Petr Doruzka's "Suplik Plny Zappy" book for years.
It's a nice hardcover book that got published in the Czech Republik in 1993.
True, I don't understand one word of the book but it does look quite good on the shelf.
It was only recently that I learned that this 1993 edition wasn't the first one.
The excellent https://www.afka.net/ website told me that the book got already published in 1984 but that it had only been made available in a rather limited edition to the members of the Young Musicians Union.
Fortunately, in today's world, that's only a handful of mouse clicks away.
Which means that I know have this great looking square version standing next to the 1993 book.
While searching the internet shops for the above mentioned book and assisted by https://www.afka.net/, I also came across the Slovak translation...
From 1990.
HUUN-HUUR-TU & FUSE
Classical ensemble Fuse is sort of the house band for Podium Witteman.
They performed a Frank Zappa piece when Dweezil was a guest at the TV show a little while ago.
As part of the Zappanale program, Fuse will be performing in Hamburg on Wednesday, 17/07/2024, together with Napoleon Murphy Brock.
Also with Napoleon.

THE STINKFOOT ORCHESTRA
Arthur Barrow says:
I am going to sit in on a few Zappa songs on Thursday, June 20, at Venice West at 1717 Lincoln Blvd, Venice, CA 90291. The band is called The Stinkfoot Orchestra. It is a large group with horns, mallets, and singers. Napoleon Murphy Brock, and maybe Bruce Fowler will be there. Nappy is the main lead singer of the group. The sets are early. I will play at the end of the first set which starts at 7PM. Come on down, LA friends!
And later, he added:
I just talked with Bruce and he is coming!
THE FURIOUS BONGOS - BIG SWIFTY / SHALL WE TAKE OURSELVES SERIOUSLY?
While a recording of 'Big Swifty / Shall We Take Ourselves Seriously?' from the 13th of May is up on Bandcamp, a video of both pieces from the 15th of May can now be enjoyed on YouTube.
It was an absolute joy to see The Furious Bongos at Zappanale last year.
I do hope they will return to Europe some day.

FRANK ZAPPA - CRUSH ALL BOXES
"Crush All Boxes" was an album project by Frank Zappa.
Acetates exist and these might even have been distributed to radio stations. All of the tracks got remixed and were eventually released on "You Are What You Is".
The actual "Crush All Boxes" never got released although the recording can be found on various bootlegs.
One of these was released on the Way Of Wizards Records label. The album came with a bonus CD that presented the same material. Three vinyl editions were made: red, blue and green.
My copy (that I only came across by accident earlier this year) is on blue vinyl (as the little sticker shows).
Released in 2015.
For the best recording around, check out Zappateers.
TASAVALLAN PRESIDENTTI - LIVE AT RUISROCK 1971
- tasavalla presidentti: live at ruisrock 1971
(2024, 2lp, finland, svart records)
The Finnish Svart Records label released the “Live At Ruisrock 1971” recording earlier this year, on vinyl and on CD.
The black and purple vinyl versions got distributed, while the smoky clear marbled vinyl version was only available from the label’s webshop.
The purple vinyl edition was limited to 400 copies.
The smoky clear marbled vinyl edition was limited to 150 copies.
“Live At Ruisrock 1971” included a 20-minute version of FZ’s ‘King Kong’.
The band featured Frank Robson (vocals, organ, tambourine), Pekka Pöyry (soprano sax, alto sax, flute, cowbell), Jukka Tolonen (guitar), Måns Groundstroem (bass), Vesa Aaltonen (drums).
Not the best audio quality, but you'll get a glimpse of what Tasavallan Presidentti is about.
LAZULI - LORELIVE
- lazuli: lorelive
(2024, cd/dvd, france, l'abeille rode)
Their latest release presents their concert at the "Night Of The Prog" festival at the Lorelei Amphitheater in St. Goarsgausen, Germany, on July 23, 2022.
The band has gone through some slight changes in the line-up the last couple of years (the last one being Gédéric Byar being replaced by Arnaud Beyney), but that didn't change their overall sound.

THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION - FREAK OUT
Some of my friends collect all the different pressings of the various Frank Zappa albums.
This is an exercise that never stops. It probably starts with the vinyl editions and then moves on to 8-tracks, cassettes and CD's.
Check out the huge Grand Zappa book if you want to get an idea of what the Zappa vinyl collectors world looks like...
Although I do not consider myself a collector in that sense of the word, I do admit that I have different pressings of several albums.
And to be completely honest, I even started to buy some (or most) of the 'latest' vinyl series that was released on the Zappa records label.
Especially, these brand-new editions of the first Mothers album look and sound amazing.
That being said, I somehow misplaced (?) my copy of the 2013 re-issue of "Freak Out". I'm rather convinced that I framed it
** I have these re-usable 12" x 12" frames that I use to brighten up the house :-) **
and even had it up on the wall for a while, with the other early Mothers releases, but I can't find it anymore. Or maybe that was the initial idea but it never actually happened... Aarghh... I'm getting old...
Long story short, I bought another (?) copy of the 2013 "Freak Out" and it arrived last week.
Includes the "Freak Out Hot Spots" Map.
And I couldn't resist to fill a gap, so I bought the 2013 re-issue of "Uncle Meat" as well.
Includes the "Uncle Meat Booklet".
Now where are these frames...
SUN RA - EXCELSIOR MILL
- sun ra: excelsior mill
(2024, cd, usa, modern harmonic)
I'm catching up with the recent Sun Ra releases, so I was quite happy that the "Excelsior Mill" CD arrived last week.
Sun Ra on the Wurlitzer pipe organ.
Mystic and magisterial, Ra comes off here like a cross between a demonically riffing ‘50s horror movie villain and a futuristic congregation leader delivering the interplanetary gospel. Brassy stabs provide the kind of punctuation that could be graphically rendered as an endless string of exclamation marks in 500-point font. String-like swoops and swirls dance across the top of the carnage, cooling the flames just enough to keep the whole thing from combusting (for a while at least) but never dousing the fiery fury that Ra draws forth from the instrument.
Recorded on December 31, 1984, when Sun Ra and his Arkestra appeared at the Excelsior Mill in Atlanta, GA.
Out on LP, CD and through Bandcamp.
The CD presents the entire recording as one track.
Nice package by Modern Harmonic.

THE MELAMINE DIVISION PLATES - NOVOSIBIRSK OUT-TAKES
Anyone in need for a bit more twang should check out The Melamine Division Plates' "Novosibirsk Out-Takes".
Only available through Bandcamp as a digital download, Alan Jenkins will take you for a fun journey.
Lovely melodies.
And I also learned that the typical surf guitar twang sound that you get by adding some reverb and vibrato was meant to emulate the sound of waves !!
BRUNO VANSINA'S NEW ALBUM IS RELEASED TODAY
Bruno Vansina - "Blauw Kou"
Out on CD and Bandcamp.
Building on the experience with the Vansina Orchestra in 2014, Vansina revisits orchestral sounds. This time the wind section makes way for a string ensemble, the drums have to share space with a battery of percussionists. Musical giant 'Magic' Malik Mezzadri once again joins ranks. Don't expect sugar sweet arrangements, but music deeply rooted in Jazz with rhythmic elements reminiscent of Steve Coleman (and others), nods to the exotic sounds of Les Baxter and Martin Denny and melodies that flirt with Frank Zappa.
Album release concert will be this Sunday at De Bijloke in Ghent, BE.

CHICAGO UNDERGROUND DUO / TRIO
Bounderies were pushed today.
Credit goes to the Chicago Underground Duo.
The 2000 "Synesthesia" album is described as futuristic fusion on the Wikipedia page.
I have to admit that it would suit perfectly as the soundtrack for a Star Trek episode.
And the Star Trek boys and girls might even be up to it as I watched Star Trek Strange New World's "Subspace Rhapsody" the other day. Sort of a musical episode that had the interstellar crew singing and dancing. Oh, how nice it would be for them to enter the Chicago Underground Quadrant...
OK, I'm getting carried away here, but I do understand why Wiki calls it futuristic fusion.
It sounds great!!
the opening track: 'Blue Sparks from Her, and the Scent of Lightning' :
But there also was "Slon", the 2004 album where the duo expanded into a trio.
Rob Mazurek on cornet, Chad Taylor on drums, plus Noel Kupersmith on bass.
Including electronics and ambient noises, "Slon" is another fine improvised jazz album.
Here's 'Protest', which may be a reference to their 2003 European No War Tour.
Love the energy.
And then there was the 2010 "Boca Negra" release. By the Mazurek / Taylor duo.
Quite intense and a nice finale of a trio of Chicago Underground albums...
Here's 'Spy On The Floor', superbly constructed...

ZAPPA PLAYS ZAPPA
Dweezil Zappa will soon embark on another Zappa Plays Zappa tour.
Flashback to 2008 when he released "Zappa Plays Zappa".
It was made available as a single CD album (worldwide release), but also as a 2 DVD set (in the US and in Europe), and even as a 2 DVD / 3 CD deluxe set (in the US).
I only recently learned that there was also a 2 DVD / CD combination. It got released in Australia and in New Zealand. Also in 2008.
I got hold of a copy and it even looks like a promo copy as it has a "Sample Product - Not For Sale" sticker on the back.
ALAN JENKINS - THE WORLD OF STRING
- alan jenkins: the world of string
(2012, download, --, bandcamp)

"The World Of String" is another chapter in the wondrous world of Alan Jenkins, starring Alan's surf guitar.
Eleven instrumental tracks, celebrating surf music.

WHISKY A GO GO 1968 CELEBRATION
Yesterday, (June 10) the release party for the new Zappa album was held at the Whisky A Go Go.
And Mike Keneally
Here's the setlist :
FRANK ZAPPA - NETHERLANDS 1970
The Frank Zappa "Netherlands 1970" radio show CD arrived as well.
This is a recording of the Dutch VPRO Piknik / Uddel show, as broadcast on TV.
Recently (in 2020) officially released on the "Mothers 1970" 4 CD set.
An excellent show and recording, but we already knew that.
I'm guessing this will not be the last time we see this recording on a radio show release...
FRANK ZAPPA - UNFASTEN YERSELF
The "Unfasten Yerself" radio show LP that got released a little while ago, is available in a standard black vinyl edition, as well as in a limited (300 copies) red vinyl edition.
As said earlier, the material is taken from the well-known X-Mas Flower Hour broadcast, Munich, Germany, 1980.
