STUDION DAN

A message from Studio Dan

Two weeks ago, we would have finally celebrated our debut in the myth-enshrouded Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, but ... well, you know... Never mind!

We made the best of it, the replacement program for our performance turns out to be a wonderfully wondrous short film: Departure to Planet Globokar tells the dramatic prologue (director: Melanie Hollaus) of our music theater production Planet Globokar, which will - hopefully - be shown in April 2022 in Hamburg.

The movie, for the whole family, is available from Saturday, February 27th, 11 a.m. at the Elbphilharmonie media library :

IN TODAY'S RAPIDLY CHANGING WORLD...

from FZ's 'Punky's Whips' ("Zappa In New York")

Don Pardo: In today's rapidly changing world, musical groups appear almost every day with some new promotional device. Some of these devices have been known to leave irreparable scars on the minds of foolish young consumers. One such case is seated before you, live on stage—yes, Terry Bozzio, that cute little drummer. Terry recently fell in love with a publicity photo of a boy named Punky Meadows, lead guitar player from a group called ANGEL. In the photo, Punky was seen with a beautiful shiny hairdo in a semi-profile which emphasized the pooched out succulence of his insolent pouting rictus, the sight of which drove the helpless drummer mad with desire!

ANGEL Signs with Cleopatra Records for New Album, Takes to the Radio with Keith Roth This Sunday

Legendary Rock Band ANGEL is set to start recording a brand new album on Cleopatra Records. This will be the second album on Cleopatra and a follow up to the very successful album “RISEN” released in 2019. Founding members Punky Meadows and Frank DiMino have been working with new partner and band member, guitarist Danny Farrow to write and craft the new songs. The three recently got together and wrote 13 brand new songs and the band is super excited to get back in the studio to record. “We've written some great songs and are excited for all you guys to hear,” says Meadows, continuing “We’re recording our second album for Cleopatra records and couldn't be happier about it! They're an awesome record company and we can't wait to get started.” Says guitarist Danny Farrow, “We are all super Excited to be working with Cleopatra Records again on a follow up album to RISEN. It will be great to get back in the studio again with the band as well as working on lots of positive things for the future of ANGEL.”

In 2020, Angel also signed with veteran artist manager Ron Rainey in Beverly Hills, CA. “Ron is the real deal and has already done great things for Us!” Punky says. The respect goes both ways says Rainey, “I'm happy to be working with Angel again. The group is sounding great live and they are prodigious writers, testified by the success of their 2019 Cleopatra album ‘Risen.’ They are now writing songs for their next Cleopatra album and we at Ron Rainey Management are proud to be a part of their resurgence.” Part of that resurgence will be the eventual return to touring and Ron has already hired Mike Weinstein from American Artists Corporation to help bring their show to Angel fans across the USA. “We have a great team now and are looking forward to an amazing year, and of Course we'll be back out on the road to blow the roof off in a town near you!” celebrates, Meadows.

But you don’t have to wait long to reconnect with Angel. Tune in to hear Punky, Frank and Danny interview with the radio rocker Keith Roth this Sunday night (Feb 28, 2021) from 8:00 to 10:00 pm Eastern time on The ELECTRIC BALLROOM show on WRAT 95.9FM Click "listen live" on www.WRAT.com, or play WRAT on iHeartRadio.

THE OTHERS OF INVENTION -- FEBRUARY 24 UPDATE

Eventually, The Others Of Invention will count three volumes.
Each volume will be made available as a black & white paperback, but also as a full colour hardcover book.

“The Others Of Invention” lists bands and artists that have recorded and released compositions that were written by Frank Zappa. It also includes recordings that Frank Zappa contributed to, a handful of tributes, and even a couple of albums that include references to Frank Zappa.

The paperbacks will be available through Amazon. Print-on-Demand.
The luxurious hardcover through a Dutch on-line book shop. Print-on-Demand.

The paperback versions of Volume 1 and Volume 2 are already available.
If you want to order a copy, pick an Amazon location near you to avoid high shipping costs.
A paperback copy = 30 US $ (or 26 €), plus shipping.

The hardcover versions of Volume 1 and Volume 2 will be ready in about two weeks.
A hardcover copy will cost 72 € plus shipping (and these are heavy books as each volume counts over 400 pages).

  • Volume 1 = FZ discography + OOI 1966 - 1999
  • Volume 2 = OOI 2000 - 2012
  • Volume 3 = OOI 2013 - 2020 + Zappanale productions
+ composition and artist index for the 3 volumes.

Paperback through Amazon is offered on Amazon.com, Amazon France, Germany, Spain and Japan.

Here's the link for Amazon.com (USA) for Volume 1
https://www.amazon.com/Others-Invention-Vol-1-recorded-artists/dp/B08WZJK4MP/ref=sr_1_2

Here's the link for Amazon.de (Germany) for Volume 2
https://www.amazon.de/Others-Invention-Vol-2-recorded-artists/dp/B08X65PJPD/ref=sr_1_1?

This link has an "Look Inside" option, mentioned above the picture on the book on the Amazon website. This should give you a pretty good idea of what's inside.

Here's a snapshot of the black & white print proof:

And from the hardcover print proof (although the lines between the entries have been removed in the meantime):

RÊVE D'ELEPHANT ORCHESTRA - LOBSTER CARAVAN

  • rêve d'éléphant orchestra: lobster caravan
        (2004, cd, belgium, werf records)

"What do elephants dream of?"
Your answer is as good as mine.

But I do know that "Lobster Caravan" has been played a lot of times, the last week.
I bought "Lobster Caravan" only recently. Together with "Racines du Ciel", the band's first release.
I haven't listened to "Racines du Ciel" yet. I keep reaching for "Lobster Caravan".
It has this oriental, hypnotic vibe.
Beautiful.

Try track no.4 : 'Pop Stoemp'.

UZ JSME DOMA & RANDY

Last year, the Klanggalerie record label (Austria) released the 2010 concert by Uz Jsme Doma & Randy (of Residents fame), performing the music of The Residents.

Much to my surprise, the very same album was also released by the Indies MG label (Czech Republic).
With different artwork.

ANOTHER ZAPPA RADIO SHOW ALBUM

Another Frank Zappa radio show set.
This "Capitol Theatre 1978" 4 CD set presents the early and late show from 1978/10/13, 'Capitol Theatre', New York City.

FZ (guitar, vocals) with Vinnie Colaiuta (drums), Arthur Barrow (bass), Patrick O'Hearn (bass), Tommy Mars (keys), Ike Willis (guitar, voc), Denny Walley (guitar, voc), Peter Wolf (keys) and Ed Mann (percussion).
WDHA-FM broadcast, but I doubt if they got the original tapes.

THE OTHERS OF INVENTION

I’ve compiled a book. Well, three books to be more precise.

“The Others Of Invention” lists bands and artists that have recorded and released compositions that were written by Frank Zappa. It also includes recordings that Frank Zappa contributed to, a handful of tributes, and even a couple of albums that include references to Frank Zappa.
The final thing is being published in three volumes.

Here's a picture of the print proof for Volume 2.

Volume 1 lists FZ’s albums (as a reference) and takes a closer look at the albums on which artists and bands recorded one or more pieces by Frank Zappa, from 1966 to 1999.
Volume 2 mentions the albums from 2000 to 2012.
Volume 3 lists the albums from 2013 to 2020, the Zappanale productions, a song index and an artist index (for the three volumes together).

It’s hard for me to imagine, but for those of you who would like a copy, all three volumes will become available as print-on-demand books.
The paperback version, in black and white, will be available from various Amazon locations.
An inessential, over-the-top, too luxurious hardcover version (in colour) will be available from a Dutch on-line shop.
And in case you were wondering, the amazing artwork was done by Maximiliano Lopez Barrios.

More info soon.

GUUS JANSSEN - MEETING POINTS

Every music enthusiast knows (or should know) the Bimhuis venue in Amsterdam, NL.
Home for improvised music and modern jazz concerts, Bimhuis also accommodates a record label.

One of the albums on the label presents live recordings by Guus Janssen in various settings..
I'm enjoying the CD at this very moment.

Live Bimhuis recordings from 1989 to 2014.

DENNIS REA - GIANT STEPPES

  • dennis rea: giant steppes
        (2021, cd, usa, moonjune records)

I started the day with Dennis Rea's brand-new album. On repeat.

Guitarist and composer Dennis Rea continues his musical journey around the world. Literally. Where his previous release focused on China and Tawain (where Dennis and his wife, Anne, lived for a while in the early 1990s), his latest endeavors took him to him to Russia and to Tuva.
The adventure resulted in a book, "Tuva And Busted", and the accompanying "Giant Steppes" album.

"Giant Steppes" offers four tracks, traditional Tuva songs, recorded in Seattle and in Tuva.
Although the pieces are quite different, they fit well together.

Thanks to Leonardo Pavlovic / Moonjune Records for making this available.

Essential listening (and reading):

MACHINE MASS - INTRUSION

I've just ordered my CD copy of Machine Mass' "Intrusion" album. It got released yesterday.

Listening to the digital download in the meantime.

It sounds great. Far more jazzy than I expected.
If I had only looked at the tracklist, that would have been obvious as the album opens with Coltrane's 'Africa' and ends with Joe Zawinul's 'In A Silent Way'.

http://off-recordlabel.blogspot.com/2021/02/ocd049-machine-mass-sextet-intrusion.html

Featuring Tony BIANCO (Elton Dean, Paul Dunmall, Evan Parker), Michel DELVILLE (The Wrong Object, Vegir), Antoine GUENET (The Wrong Object, Univers Zero), Damien CAMPION (The Wrong Object), Laurent BLONDIAU (Mâäk's Spirit, Andy Emler MegaOctet, Octurn) and Manuel HERMIA (Slang, Orchestra Nazionale della Luna, Hermia-Ceccaldi-Darrifourcq Trio).

GINGERBREAD MAN

The Residents' "Gingerbread Man" is one of my favourite albums.

I'm quite happy that Cherryred Records is re-releasing this album on LP and on CD.

PIERREJEAN GAUCHER'S NEW ALBUM

Here's a snippet of Pierrejean Gaucher's new album, to be released next month.

"Zappe Satie" is Pierrejean's tribute to the music of Erik Satie.

On a similar note, here's Joel Thome discussing why he added Erik Satie's 'Socrate' to the 1991 Zappa Universe program :

The program at Zappa's Universe includes not only his works but also Erik Satie's 'Socrate'. What led to this pairing of composers?

I feel that there's a unique connection between their music. I'm not sure that Frank would share that feeling, but as someone coming from a more objective standpoint I think that Satie and Varèse should both be recognized as pillars in Frank's music. There was a very close feeling between the musics of Satie and Varèse, which is important because Frank considers Varèse his mentor.

Did Zappa object to having Satie on the program?

Not really. His feeling was that he didn't know how the audience would react to Satie. But my feeling was that audiences often react to Satie and Varèse in identical ways, which would be something in the neighborhood of the reaction at the premiere of [Stravinsky's] Le Sacre du Printemps. In any event, I felt that the audience reaction would just be a part of the totality of the theatre that occurs. In fact, I would have liked to have had the Socrate moving during the Zappa pieces.

Simultaneous performances?

Sure. If you took Zappa's Universe and superimposed the Satie Socrate on it, that would be a very special moment. In a way, that's what happened, regardless of who listened and who didn't listen to the Socrate, because the piece made a very powerful impact.

So the audience at the Ritz has been pretty vociferous?

Yeah, because with Frank's music they're used to shouting out the text and singing along and all of that. But at the same time, there is that part of the audience that has come to hear the Socrate and see the Calder sets. [Artist Alexander Calder designed the hanging sets at the Ritz in 1934, based on the sets used at the premiere of Socrate in 1918.] In the last two concerts, after doing the video and CD recording, we had to be very careful about overtime, so we had to limit the performances of the Socrate on those nights to just the second movement. I remember that when Dweezil [Zappa, guitarist and son of Frank] announced that we were going to do only the second movement on the second night, one rocker stood up and shouted, "But what about all three movements?" That was really wonderful because it shows that a crossover exists.

Unlike Satie's work, much of Zappa's orchestral music can hardly be called simple. He seems to pursue a harmonic complexity that is more characteristic of the Schoenberg school than of what Satie was doing.

Those are surface characteristics. When you get in touch with the similarities of their work, in dynamics, in texture, even in text, that overcomes the dissimilarities.
