There's a lot of radio broadcast concert recordings being released lately.
There's the Zappa NYC concert, a Little Feat release, a Tom Waits concert, ...
And now Captain Beefheart joined the ranks :
"Full Moon In Cowtown" is an April 1974 broadcast of a Kansas concert.

CORDELIA RECORDS IS RE-RELEASING R.STEVIE MOORE'S (1952-19??) ALBUM
This is a CD reissue of R. Stevie Moore's seventh L.P. which Cordelia originally released in 1986. In collaboration with the artist himself the new version has been remastered and expanded to about 77 and a half minutes. It comes in a digipak with, this time, a colour photograph on the front.

TOHPATI - TRIBAL DANCE
- tohpati: tribal dance
(2014, cd, usa, moonjune mjr064)
The album is called "Tribal Dance" and it features Jimmy Haslip on bass, and former Zappa and Holdsworth collaborator Chad Wackerman on drums.
"Tribal Dance" a superb album, focussing on melodic fusion guitar.
from the MoonJune website:
On Tribal Dance, there's no shortage of Tohpati's trademark breathtaking, acrobatic axe-wielding. Towering power chords, distorted spare-note lead lines, unexpected machine gun-blasting sonic assaults, chugging rhythmic grooves, and even a host of elegantly-nuanced jazz phrasings, are all in attendance -- summoned at will, and in omnipotent fashion.
His explosive fretwork often appears as the musical equivalent of a pounching cobra (or one that is coiled and ready to strike!), yet it is his intuitive, prescient interplay with this formidable world-class rhythm section that emerges victorious on this stage. A powerful synergy prevails, as Tohpati locks in with Haslip’s dubmaster basslines and the rubber-limbed, imaginative kitwork of Wackerman. The trio generate wave upon wave of infectious syncopations and robust grooves, gloriously decorating a very special session.
Highly recommended.

OGO DYS - THE REVENGE OF THE WICKED KING PICKLE NICKER
- ogo dys: the revenge of the wicked king pickle knicker
(2011, 2cdr, sweden, cosmic pancake productions)
On "The Revenge Of The Wicked King Pickel Knicker", Magnus Lundberg has collected 39 demos of his various Ogo Dys projects.
This 2CDR-set got released on Magnus' Cosmic Pancake Productions label in an extremely limited edition of eight numbered copies. Housed in an-handcraged packge, it is a perfect example of a DIY release. And it sounds great.
I can only repeat myself: you definitely need to check out Ogo Dys. I admit that it's not easy to find the music, but it will be worth your while.

NEW BOOK ON SUN RA
Thomas Stanley says :
The book is 262 pages with images by Lee Santa, Leon Collins, Michael Wilderman, Paula Stanley and Yusef Jones. The cover illustration was done by Erica Fallin and the book design by Al Morrow. The foreword was written by Greg Tate. John Szwed and Matt Shipp graciously provided back cover blurbs.
There are two appendices including the first published transcript of my October 1990 interview with Ra and several transcriptions of material held by the CAA at ESS. There's also a recommended playlist to enhance your reading pleasure.
The book is an interpretative response to Sun Ra's teachings. He talked all the time and was as amply recorded as any artist of the 20th Century. My book is an attempt to answer the question, "what would happen if a writer-scholar were to take Sun Ra as seriously as he took himself?"
The result has been, for me, one helluva ride. For you, it will hopefully be a good read and an additional tool for integrating Ra's cosmo-wisdom into your life.

MANNGOLD DE COBRE - S/T
- manngold de cobre: s/t
(2014, lp+cd, bel, vinylla)
Record Store Day 2014.
The fattest fish that I found on RSD2014 is without a doubt the first album of Manngold de Cobre.
Released in a limited edition of 125 copies on gold vinyl, with a bonus CD, and it swings !!
This is not bad. Actually, it is quite the opposite of bad.
Essential listening !!
This limited vinyl edition is probably sold out, but I have seen CD copies for sale as well.
Get it while you can.
MannGold de Cobre's debut album : Wild, energetic, tight and with a strong focus. Tribal repetitive mayhem (2 drums), the horn section sometimes hitting as hard as the MC5-ish guitars, as well as cosmic Sun Ra arrangements and scapes that heal and embrace as Davis' In A Silent Way. Add some proto space punk, free and noise and you're in for something really really unique.

COPERNICUS - IMMEDIATE ETERNITY II
- copernicus: immediate eternity II
(2014, cd, usa, nevermore)
It's a very clever point of view and Copernicus uses it to point out the things that go wrong in our world.
When "Immediate Eternity" got released in Spanish as "La Eternidad Immediata", Copernicus did 25 concerts in Ecuador. These recordings led to a remake of the original album in 2005, entitled "La Eternidad Immediata II".
This remake got recorded and released in Spanish (due to the concerts in Ecuador). Only recently, Copernicus re-recorded the vocals in English.
The results can be found on "Immediate Eternity II".
This is a very energetic, powerful album with a furious Copernicus on vocals and an excellent band behind him.
Out on Nevermore.

CÔTÉ JARDIN : HARDSCORE AND FLAT EARTH SOCIETY
The city of Ghent is one of my favourite cities. Especially on sunny days, Ghent is the place to be.
Last weekend, music center 'De Bijloke' opened it's new season with "Côté Jardin", a free festival. The perfect reason to spend an afternoon in Ghent.
The "Côté Jardin" festival listed 6 bands or ensembles, including two that I absolutely wanted to catch: Hardscore (at 18:00 h) and Flat Earth Society (at 20:30 h).
Frank Nuyts' Hardscore was formed in 1989 and at the time, besides the original compositions, they performed a number of Frank Zappa pieces from time to time as well. Around 2001, after releasing four albums, the project was put on hold. There just weren't enough opportunities to perform this music on stage.
But that's all history now. It's May 2014 and Hardscore is back.
On request of 'De Bijloke'.
As an octet.
It was good to see Hardscore in concert again. Frank Nuyts' Hardscore compositions always have this typical drive, supported by lots of percussion, zappa-esque twists (and crazy stories).
This was great. I hope to see them in concert in again real soon. It would be a pity if this would turn out to be a one-time event.
Most memorable was Frank Nuyts' marimba solo during the second half of the show. Amazing!
Flat Earth Society was scheduled to perform their latest program, "Terms Of Embarrassment", Peter Vermeersch's hommage to Frank Zappa.
Originally conceived to be performed at the "Arf Arf Arf" festival in Antwerp last March, FES is now touring witch "Terms Of Embarrassment".
Fun? You bet.
FES headmaster Peter Vermeersch has written a number of new compositions, but FES is also bringing a number of Zappa-penned compositions to the stage. Next to the excellent original material, one can enjoy FES' take on 'Take Your Clothes Off', 'City Of Tiny Lites', Zappa's never released 'Solitude' and Pierre Vervloesem's Zappa-mash-up 'Random Riffs'.
(Here's more info on 'Solitude' : http://globalia.net/donlope/fz/songs/Solitude.html)
This was the third time that I saw FES performing "Terms Of Embarrassment". The first time was at 'De Singel'. A fabulous concert (and a premiere if you're not counting the try-out in Holland one week earlier) for a hall of Zappa Freaks.
The second time was in Eindhoven, at the 'Nat Lab'. I had never been to 'Nat Lab' before and it was a revelation. A relatively small room, twelve or so seats in a row, fifteen rows high (?) and a perfect sound. What a difference with 'De Singel'. I could hear every instrument, every nuance, and (!!) the guitars (Pierre Vervloesem and Mauro Pawlowski) were up in front in the mix. What a joy.
So the Bijloke gig was number three. The atmosphere was perfect. Friends around me, sunset, and, again, a mesmerizing performance.
As far as I could tell, the setlist didn't include 'Broadway Boogie Woogie' this time, but 'The Previous Song' was performed as sort of an extended version.

ALCATRAZZ - DISTURBING THE PEACE

I liked it at the time.
Thought it was fun.
Still do.
Hardrock goes Prog.
A little while ago, the original 1985 got re-released as part of a 2CD set. The second disc presented a recording of the 1984 Shinjuku Koseinenkin-Kaikan Hall concert (= 1984/10/10 Tokyo).
The source for this live disc can be found in the Japan-only "Power Live" VHS-video from 1985. Probably released on DVD in Japan as well, but most definitely released as an audio live album in Japan.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - WOOD PANEL PACER WAGON WITH MAGS
- various artists: wood panel pacer wagon with mags
(1996, lp + 7", usa, too many records tm 76)
Here's another nice find. Even if I say so myself.
I stumble on this while looking for data on the band that participated to the "Mother People Ripped Our Blunderland" release. One of these bands is The Poops and they contributed to "Wood Panel Pacer Wagon With Mags". They perform 'Lottery Special' on it. More interesting is The Kegel Muscles who perform Frank Zappa's 'Bow Tie Daddy'.
"Wood Panel Pacer Wagon With Mags" comes as a vinyl album, plus a 7" and a magazine.
It's a punk compilation album, containing 100 songs !!
The Kegel Muscles fit in perfectly.

ZAPPA IN NEW YORK 1981
A new Zappa album?
It sure looks like it as it is being offered at different shops.
A closer look at the cover and the label (Goldfish Records?) does add a certain doubt, however.
A 2CD-set.
Previously available as mp3 download.
Recording taken from the FM radio broadcast.
This is the concert that featured Al Dimeola as a special guest on 'Clownz On Velvet'.

THE RESIDENTS' POLLEX CHRISTI
Early 1997, The Residents released "Pollex Christi".
Or as our Eyeballed Friends described it: The Residents Perform N.Senada's "Pollex Christi", N.Senada being one of the mysterious Residents' collaborators.
At this point, it might be interesting to add that Captain Beefheart And His Magic Band recorded "Trout Mask Replica" in a house in Ensenada Drive...
I'm not saying that N.Senada was Don Van Vliet. I just think that it's a nice reference to an obrious influence.
'Pollex Christi" got released in a limited, numbered edition of 400 copies. It sold out immediately.
May 1997, The Residents released a second batch of 400 copies of "Pollex Christi". Unnumbered this time, and with a slightly altered cover.
An abridged version got released on the "Roosevelt" album.

FRANZ HOHLER
I've been adding some more data to the Others Of Ivention section. People performing and recording the music of Frank Zappa.
Frank Hohler performed and recorded Frank Zappa's 'Mr.Green Genes' in the seventies.
The track can be found on two of his albums. "I Glaub Jetz Hoch I Ab" (a studio version, 1973) and "Iss Dys Gmües" (live, 1978).
The same weird Swiss version of 'Mr.Green Genes' can be found on "Der Gross Zwarg" a more recent compilation CD.

A MIKE KENEALLY UPDATE
A message from Mike Keneally
Yo!
We've done five shows on the Keneally-Bendian-Lunn tour so far and things are developing musically in a fascinating way every night. The setlist is being honed and altered each night and it's a challenging, fun ride for us and for the audience. Touching on so many different styles and dynamics, we've put together a song order that has a really satisfying flow. Response has been absolutely fantastic – thank you to all who've been a part of the shows, so far, from the superbly generous and helpful Guest Hosts and Associate GHs, to the venue owners and staff, and of course the audience. This is turning out to be a really enjoyable tour!
Check out the info below for the remaining gigs, and if you're planning to go to any, please consider buying your tickets in advance online (we're hitting up some new venues on this run and it's nice for them to see some decent sales in advance of the show, and helps us in the long run in terms of future touring).
Really looking forward to the rest of these shows. The band are raging every night. Gregg and Doug are killing it and I'm having a fantastic time.
Thanks for being superb!
Yours in perpetuity,
Mike

They'll be doing some concerts and festivals this summer.
Try-out at De Singer in Rijkevorsel, Belgium, early July.
TaxiWars is the result of a rebellious and intensive collaboration between dEUS frontman Tom Barman and Belgian saxphonist Robin Verheyen. A RESIDENTS UPDATE
Lots of things are happening with The Residents.
There's the "Theory Of Obscurity", the documentary on the Residents that premiered last week.
http://residentsmovie.com/
In the meantime, The Residents toured Europe, presenting the final part of the Randy, Chuck and Bob trilogy.
To be quite honest, the previous show hadn't really impressed me. It was the Leuven (B) show, where the sound was quite bad and the lighting was a disaster (a spotlight in our face, to be exact). Details maybe, but enough to ruin the experience.
This time, I went to Ghent (B) where I watched an enjoyable show: seated, not too loud, able to hear everything the way that it should be.
The trilogy started with a series of concerts in 2010, called "The Talking Light" and was all about death and ghosts.
The second part toured last year. It was entitled "Wonder Of Weird" and it was all about love and sex.
This time the focus was on bearth and rebirth.
You get the picture : the circle of life, in reverse.
The show itself was quite good. The played some great stuff in surprising arrangements.
setlist (thanks to Ulli)
Rabbit Habit * Fever Dreams * Golden Guy * Shadowland 1 (The Butcher) * Herman The Human Mole * Harry The Head * Bouncing Benny * Shadowland 2 * They Are The Meat * Judas Saves * Shadowland 3 (The Trash Collector) * Blue Rosebuds * Weight-Lifting Lulu * Shadowland 4 (The Diver) * Easter Woman * My Second Wife * Loss Of Innocence * Shadowland 5 (The Model's Mother) * Betty's Body * Caring * Micky Maccaroni * Shadowland 6 (The Engineer) * Is He Really Bringing Roses ? * Melon Collie Lassie * Hard & Tenderly * Ship Of Fools * The Making Of A Soul * Forty-Four * Outro
Here's a great set of pictures from Eyeballmuseum, taken during the Düsseldorf concert.
Randy, unearthly as always.
Chuck, playing an incredible Korg electronic percussion machine
Bob, adding screaming guitar lines when necessary.
Another highlight is the recent batch of releases. "Santa Dog", the 2 x 7" did get a re-release, and there's also the new "The Wonder Of The Weird" 2 CD set.
Dispite my bad experience during the Leuven 2013 concert, I have to admite that this is a fine album. A very fine album indeed.

NEW SUN RA 10" VINYL OUT ON THE ART YARD LABEL
- sun ra and his band from outer space: space aura
(2013, 10", uk, art yard 10/001)
Here's some additional info from Paul Griffiths from the Saturn newsgroup:
The
songs on this 10" are previously unreleased. They were recorded at
University of Buffalo NYC during the ESP college tour of 1966 that
produced 'Nothing Is' and
some of the songs on the 'Outer Spaceways Incorporated' Saturn lp. They
share the same detailed and beautiful recorded sound and show the
Arkestra in their full mid 60's prime.
The
recordings were mastered from a tape reel, originally in the possession
of James Bryant, that showed up on ebay. There is approximately 20
minutes of music on the 10" (everything that was on the reel) and is
clearly the first portion of the show. The whereabouts of the remaining
tapes from this concert are unknown.
Bernard
Stollman of ESP records engaged sound recordist David B Jones to record
all of the concerts from this tour and
apparently discarded the recordings that were not used for Nothing Is.
The remainder of the tapes must surely be out there somewhere?
Paul.

GOV'T MULE - COTTON CLUB
- gov't mule: cotton club
(2013, dvd-bootleg, ??, pignon-158)
Nice concerts.
The video quality isn't that good, but I guess one shouldn't expect to much when 331 minutes are crammed together on one single disc.
The september 1995 has Gov't Mule playing Zappa's 'Pygmy Twylyte'.
Nice.
Warren Haynes rocks.

TONY WILLIAMS LIFETIME
Last week, I posted this YouTube video of Allan Holdsworth playing with the Zappa Plays Zappa band.
It didn't do Allan right.
JP was kind enough to send me the following link, highlighting Allan Holdsworth guitar playing.

OGO DYS - AZYNDER!
The most recent Ogo Dys release is entitled "Azynder!". It's also his most impressive one.
Experimental, zappa-esque rock.
If you want to check out the music of Ogo Dys, try to find a copy of "Azynder!".
This album most certainly needs a proper CD and or vinyl release.
Highly recommended.

POOPY NECROPONDE / OGO DYS - POST OP TRANSATLANTIS (SPLIT LP)
- poopy necroponde / ogo dys : post op transatlantis (split lp)
(2009, cdr, sweden, cosmic pancake productions)
Poopy Necroponde (Matt T. Lindsay) took care of side A (6 tracks), while Ogo Dys (Magnus Lundberg) put 4 tracks on side B.
The vinyl album got released on 100% Zero Records record label, while Magnus Lundberg released a CDR-version of the album on his Cosmic Pancake Productions label.
I bought this album for the Ogo Dys material (this time with munchkin vocals), but I do have to admit that I like the Poopy Necroponde tracks as well.
Here's Poopy Necroponde performing with Clevo, his Devo-inspired band.
