This show should provide a very interesting "change of pace" for the series.
The Don & Bunk Show started in 2001 when Don Preston and Bunk Gardner, both original members of the Mothers of Invention with Frank Zappa, wanted to show audiences their unique abilities which were revealed in Zappa's first band. Gardner and Preston have both been longnown for their amazing improvising abilities and interpretation of Zappa's music. They will be playing a full range of Zappa's music from Freak Out to Zoot Allures. The evening will be full of the zany antics, wild improvisations and strange electronic music the early Mothers were famous for, along with the expert mastery of their instruments. "We're doing this tour because I think Zappa fans need to come and hear how Zappa's music was performed by the originals.
Hey people! We're still doing it!!" Don said. Their performance also includes bits of spoken word, often accompanied by ambient soundscapes, and even a nugget or two of wit and wisdom from the late George Carlin. This is sure to be a very interesting and deliciously deviant bit of performance art by genuine masters of the craft and is something you won't want to miss, even though you might not realize it!
As an added treat, I've been informed that the one (and thank your favorite deity) and only Paul Sears will be joining Don and Bunk, adding some rhythmic mayhem to the mix! They need more mayhem? This will be fucked up my friends!!!
Don and Bunk have recorded 2 CDs for Brain Records: "Ahead of Their Time" and "Joined At The Hip". Bunk has also recorded and/or performed with The Cleveland Philharmonic Orchestra, Geronimo Black, Tim Buckley, The 4 Winds Ensemble and many others while Don recorded/performed with The Los Angeles Philharmonic, Gil Evans, Carla Bley and many others. Preston also completed 23 film scores including Apocalypse Now.
