Superb.
One word. Superb.
This is not what I expected. No drum / percussion pieces this time but actual compositions that Terry composed on paper, on the piano, on the drum set or on the computer. Each piece got linked to one of Terry paintings (all pictured in the (very impressive) booklet). There's two discs with fusion music, a third one called "Classic" and number four, "Ambient".
The bonus blu-ray has Terry performing a drum solo at the Landmark Studio.
I love Terry's drum / percussion album, and this one's even more impressive.
Caballero Reynaldo celebrates his 20 years anniversary with a tour and with a new album.
"Reynaldo Plays Zappa?" presents 13 tracks that were originally released on earlier Caballero Reynaldo albums, but that got a complete make-over for this new release.
Beautiful.
Frank Zappa compositions, performed by Luis G. and his cohorts, Rebeca Ibánez, Román García and Santiago Serrano.
In Spanish and in English.
I love it.
info from Kangman : BLUTCH is an improvised music project, founded by David Treesome and Kim Kang, organised at least once a year when a group of friends/musicians come together during a weekend to record music. Here’s how it works: Everyone brings his own musical instruments, the musicians split up in groups of 2 or 3. Each pair gets 30 minutes to record one or more pieces of music onto a multitrack recorder. After their session is over a second pair can either add music to the first pair’s recordings or start a whole new track. During the course of the sessions each musician will have worked with all of the others, because after each session the pairs change. Also; sometimes all musicians jam at the same time or a musician goes solo. This process goes on until the end of the weekend.
When all the recordings are finished Kim Kang takes on the incredible task of mixing all the different pieces, songs, cut-ups etc… into one session. The result can be a popsong, a bizarre soundscape or pure dada collages…
The first Blutch session took place in 1999.
Material from the first two sessions (recorded in October 1999 and June 2000) can be found on the first Blutch album. Here's the back-cover, or the cover for "Blutch 2", if you like.
If you like improvised and experimental music, you should definitely check out this superb release.
Think Los Angeles Free Music Society or The Residents,
In album 127 of the "Nero" comic book series, "Doe De Petoe", main character Petoetje walks into a hallway that shows pictures of Frank Zappa, Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, Michael Jackson and Eddy Wally on the wall.
"Nero" is a classic Flemish newspaper comic series by Marc Sleen.
This album, comprised of six works from a research that interconnects the passionate aspects of Shakespeare sonnets with religiously sourced African rhythms. Unlike the "immaculate condition" notably held by Christians, African beliefs are based on human archetypes. Orixas, like all of humanity, have an emotional response stirred by love, respect and, sometimes, possession. Counterpointed by a where the ego comes before the common good, well described and found in reasonable portion among mundane literature, including Shakespeare sonnets.
THE CHILLS – Night of the chill blue
BATTLES – Leyendecker
ELEANOR FRIEDBERGER – He didn’t mention his mother
BOBB TRIMBLE – Premonitions (the fantasy)
COIL – Wrong eye
MASAKI – My tinware
WHITE STAINS – Let it be thus
NURSE WITH WOUND – The sensual sexual shoe
ENNIO MORRICONE – L’ultima diligenza di Red Rock (Version integrale)
CONDOR GRUPPE – Montenegro
GRAEME REVELL – The sleeping sickness
KRENG – Nerveuze man
17 PYGMIES – Icarus
Charles Bobuck, composer for The Residents, left the (touring) band last year to focus on his music.
His first solo album, "What Was Left Of Grandpa", still carried the * Residents * label.
His next album, "This", will be a Charles Bobuck release, collecting music from recent Residents projects and more.
To be released by Klang Galerie in February 2016.
the residents: strange culture - the river of hades - haeckel's tale (2015, 2cdr, austria, klang galerie gg215)
This new Residents release (out on Klang Galerie) collects three Charles Bobuck projects : "Strange Culture", "The Rivers Of Hades" and "Haeckel's Tale".
"Strange Culture" and "Haeckel's Tale" were made available through the Residents web-shop in 2010. It was a download-only album in the "Film And Video Series". "Rivers Of Hades" was previously released on CDR in 2011. So you might have heard some (or all) of this music before, but this is its first CD release.
Dark and mysterious...
From the Klang Galerie website: Residents music from 2007: Strange Culture (OST): In 2007, Director/artist Lynn Hershman-Leeson heard of a strange situation of an artist being arrested as a bioterrorist due to the fact that his “art” used harmless mold. She gathered a number of friends to make a film to bring more attention to the artist’s plight. Among the friends were Tilda Swinton and The Residents who had worked with Ms Hershman on her previous film, Conceiving Ada. The Rivers of Hades: An aural art piece, Chaos Is Not Just A Theory, was written by The Residents in 2007 to accompany the release of The Residents toy figures designed by Steve Cerio. The sound installation was not included in the final gallery presentation, however, and the essence of the much larger project was reduced to this piece, The Rivers of Hades. Haeckel’s Tale: The Showtime Channel has a long running horror TV series, Masters of Horror. The season included a Clive Barker story, Haeckel’s Tale. Director, John McNaughton (Henry, Portrait of a Serial Killer), was employed to oversee the project. McNaughton called in The Residents to score the film after having worked with them on a previous film, Condo Painting. For unknown reasons, the score was not used for the broadcast. Of these three 2007 projects overseen by Charles Bobuck, only The Rivers of Hades has been released on CDr in an extremely limited fan edition. This is the first release of Haeckel’s Tale and Strange Culture on CD.
A couple of months ago, I picked up this huge cardboard box at a friend's place.
The box was filled with magazines, articles, press clippings, cassettes, etceteras... All related to Frank Zappa. A perfect gift for a Zappa freak like me. (Thanks again P. !!)
Every week or so, I've been taking stuff from the box. Not too much at once. That would spoil the fun.
Last week, I came across this set of promo pictures for Frank Zappa's "200 Motels", the movie.
I'm happy to share them here.
Eight pictures in all. Almost A3 in size. Black and white, and looking as if they are over 40 years old (which is okay as they actually are over 40 years old !). Picture number 6 might look very familiar. This shot was used for the booklet / insert that came along with the 10 lp bootleg box "The History And Improvisations Of The Mothers..." on the Mud Shark label.
If everything works out fine, you should be able to click on the picture to enlarge it. Might even get you a new desktop image.
I first heard about Altertape during a concert of Sinster Sister when Mayaan Smith introduced Jan Ghesquière as the guitar player from Altertape.
I made a mental note that I had to investigate this at the next opportunity.
I didn't have to wait long as Altertape released "Nandrin Session", a brand-new 4 track EP. Actually, it's their second release, the first one being the "Glasstic Drops" album from 2014.
Altertape is Jonathan Callens' project. Next to playing the drums and the keyboards, Jonathan also composes all the pieces. Joshua Dellaert plays the bass in Altertape. And Jan Ghesquière completes the trio as the guitar player.
Jonathan Callens also plays the drums for Kiss The Anus Of A Black Cat and for Humble Grumble. Joshua Dellaert also plays the bass for the Skordature Punkjazz Ensemble.
"Nandrin Sessions" present four instrumental tracks. RifRaf magazine defined it as "Jazz meets ambient meets postrock".
I'm not good at labels, but I do think that it's fascinating.
It has been on replay all morning.

En försmak av ”From me to You – A George Duke Experience” - Napoleon Murphy Brock, Mats Öberg and friends – A Colour Flash
In 2007, Anode released "Midifications".
In Robert Carlberg's words : "A collection of MIDI files, downloaded off the internet, messed around with and assigned to new instrument combinations. Basically."
The CDR included 14 tracks, one of which was a fine reworked version of Frank Zappa's 'Peaches En Regalia". Originally released on CDR, this track can also be found on Soundcloud.
Trio Monne is bass player Simone 'Monne' Bellavia's jazz trio.
The album presents 11 tunes. A nice mix of original composition plus a number of excellent coverversions of compositions by Joe Zawinul, Wayne Shorter and Frank Zappa.
Jazz Rock Fusion.
The album ends with the Zappa composition 'Pound For A Brown'.
'Monne' Bellavia is quite familiar with the music of Frank Zappa as he also is the bass player for Ossi Duri, the Italian band that started out performing the music of Frank Zappa quite some years ago. Some of their Zappa concerts even featured former Zappa guitar player and vocalist Ike Willis.
"The Royal Dan Tribute" is the title of the Steely Dan tribute album that got released in 2006.

Composer, arranger, guitarist and DJ Gene Pritsker has just finished a project with saxophone player Yaacov Mayman. The result can be found on "2015 Annual Report", an album that combines Yaacov's jazz saxophone sounds with strong and heavy beats.
The album presents a couple of fine original tunes, next to a number of reworked classics.
My favourite tune on this album is 'Watermelon Beats', a composition that is a superb re-arrangement of Herbie Hancock's 'Watermelon Man', although I have to admit that 'Summer Beats' (in which George Gershwin's 'Summertime' plays an important part, and 'Car, Beats, Van' (as in 'Caravan') also sound great.
Fun.
A nice mix of original compositions and reworked / re-arranged classics.
Nice. Very nice.
Here's an alternate version (with cello) of 'Car, Beats, Van'.
Belgian experimental jazz band Labtrio was founded around 2007, featuring Lander Gyselinck on drums, Anneleen Boehme on double bass, and Bram De Looze on piano.
They released their first album, 'Fluxus' in 2013 on the Out Note Records label.
Last June, Labtrio recorded their latest album. These recordings took place in New Jersey and featured Michaël Attias on saxophone and Christopher Hofman on cello.
Both Lander and Bram had met Michaël and Christopher a couple of years earlier, while studying in New York City.
The result is entitled "The Howls Are Not What They Seem" and the quintet (Labtrio + guests) are touring Belgium at this very moment to promote this new album.
Yesterday, the band played at 'De Singer' in Rijkevorsel. It was a very impressive performance. The first set was rather experimental while the second set sounded more jazzy and had more of a drive.
A nice equilibrium.
I really liked it.
Check out the new album and try to catch the band in concert !!
Jan 20: Jazz Station, Saint Josse Ten Noode
Jan 21: Handelsbeurs Concertzaal, Gent
Jan 23: Kulturzentrum Jünglingshaus, Eupen
Next to the recent 'Who Are The Brain Police?' single from a couple of days ago, the Zappa Early Renaissance Orchestra (or Z.E.R.O. as they're also called) has also made their beautiful rendition of Frank Zappa's 'Montana' available.
Originally released some 40 years ago on Zappa's "Over-Nite Sensation".
Kevin Crosby adds: "Montana is one of the most popular songs by Frank Zappa. A light hearted, surreal story about a wrangler of dental floss and his pygmy pony. Z.E.R.O.'s rendition of Montana brings a little funk and swing into Montana. The band explores new territory in Montana with the help of the help of world-acclaimed drummer Prairie Prince (primarily known for his work with The Tubes and Todd Rundgren) and Wanz (Michael Wansley from Macklemore's "Thrift Shop")."
More secret info from Kevin Crosby: "The guitar solo has quotes from 007 and Mission Impossible underneath it and the ukuleles are playing a twisted version of beginning theme from Tubular Bells at the end."
A new DVD has been announced : Frank Zappa In His Own Words.
This DVD collects together over 90 minutes of video interviews and talking engagements with or undertaken by Zappa across his career, during which the great man is on form and on the money throughout. Talking on numerous subjects and displaying variously; charm, intelligence, humour and impatience - sometimes all within the same interview - this is Zappa away from the day job but at his fascinating, albeit at times fearsome, best.
The new year has only just started, and the Zappa Early Renaissance Orchestra has already released two singles.
Download only, and available from the obvious sources, 'Who Are The Brain Police?' is something that you definitely should check out.
Superb vocals by Juliana Brandon and lots of strings by Kevin Crosby and Rupert Kettle.
You'll love it.
Around 1966/67 Bowie had recorded Zappa's 'It Can't Happen Here' and 'Who Are The Brain Police') with his bands at the time, the Buzz and the Riot Squad.
During his 2003/10/30 concert in Vienna, Bowie referred to Zappa's 'It Can't Happen Here'. Asking the audience if anyone knew this song.
David Bowie as Frank Zappa and The Mothers...
Zappa's 'How Could I Be Such A Fool' performed by Ava Cherry, produced by David Bowie.
With The Astronettes (feat. David Bowie) on backing vocals.
"Stereopticon", the new album by Gary Lucas and Jann Klose got released (digital only) last week on Cosmic Trigger Records.
A physical CD release should follow soon.
Alex Machacek, Raphael Preuschl and Herbert Pirker are the Fabulous Austrian Trio (or FAT).
Their latest (second) album recently got released by Abstract Logix.
"FAT (Living The Dream)" is a very catchy, contemporary rock / fusion album.
Lots of changes in rhythms and tempos, combined with extraordinary melodies (and guitar work) from Alex Machacek.
Seven compositions by Alex Machacek, the other four by Raphael Preuschl, who also plays some amazing bass... Special guest on one of the tracks is Scheila Gonzales (Zappa Plays Zappa) !!
Just in case that you missed it, the Make Weird Music website has done fine interviews with none other than Steve Vai and Mike Keneally.
Check them out here : http://MakeWeirdMusic.com
Furthermore, Anthony told me that he is working on an interview that, and I'm quoting, would excite me.
I'm holding my breath (figuratively, of course)...
Tomorrow, January 11, 2016, The Zappa Early Renaissance Orchestra will release two new recordings through CDBaby : 'Who Are The Brain Police?' and 'Montana'.
Both compositions by Frank Zappa.

They are not satanic, they just make God cry. They don't play samba, they decompose samba. They are not a trio, they are a quintet. So definitely, they are Satanique Samba Trio! Imagine Tom Zé without vocals!! Or Captain Beefheart in a Brazilian mood!!!

Satanique Samba Trio was founded in 2002 with the sole purpose of posing as an idiosyncratic force on the Brazilian Music landscape. Two years later, the quintet released their debut EP, MISANTROPICALIA.
In 2007, the band unearthed the critically acclaimed LP SANGROU, which led its way into concerts on Brazilian soil that also featured names as big as Tom Zé and Naná Vasconcelos.
After a three year long recording hiatus, as they toured around Brazil (big country, you know the drill), BAD TRIP SIMULATOR #2 was released with undeniable success. The "putrefaction trilogy" had just started:
BAD TRIP SIMULATOR #1 from 2011 (yep, one year AFTER #2) and BAD TRIP SIMULATOR #3 (2013) would eventually follow the conceptual path of decay.
By the earlier months of 2014, the band put together a digital compilation called BADTRIPTYCH (Far Out Recordings – UK) intended to lump up the “catchier” songs from the aforementioned trilogy. Still in the wake of a creative spike, the quintet (remember: not a trio) released a 7-inch (45 RPM) vinyl record called MÓ BAD on 2015. Now they might be hitting your shores.
No Brazilian traditional rhythm remains unscathed on Satanique Samba Trio’s trail of desecration. From samba to forró, from bossa nova to lambada, this Brasília-based quintet, sometime sextet has been adding virulence, dissonance and provocation to Brazil’s musical heritage since 2002. Their music is driven by a simple but fertile aesthetic guideline: the deconstruction of the most recurrent clichés on Brazilian folk music. This very attitude (that some might describe as punk rock-ish) actually explains their name. You see, the word “Satan” is derived from the Hebrew term Ha-Satan, meaning “the accuser, the adversary”.
In other words, if you ever wanted to know how traditional Brazilian music would sound if it went infernal, Satanique Samba Trio is the fastest and coolest way find it out.
The boys from Satanique Samba Trio: Munha da 7 – electric bass and regency, Gustavo “Don Chavez” Elias – acoustic guitar, Jota Dale – cavaco, Lucas “Sombrio” Muniz – bass clarinet and Lupa Marques – drums.
On Sunday, December 20, 2015, a crazy bunch of freaks gathered in Heusden-Zolder (B) to celebrate the music of Frank Zappa.
Three concerts, an expo, a record shop and a bunch of nice people. What else would I need?
First up was Sinister Sister.
I had seen them a couple of days earlier in Ghent so I knew what to expect. Top musicians performing jazz / rock versions (and mash-ups) of various Frank Zappa tunes. This was the latest concert in their Jazzlab Series tour.
I loved it.

Warped Dreamer is Arve Henriksen (trumpet and electronics), Stian Westerhus (guitar and electronics), Jozef Dumoulin (Fender Rhodes and electronics) and Teun Verbruggen (drums and electronics).
Guy Peters adds : Warped Dreamer shares a fickle, mysterious city vibe with a few other bands these musicians are/were involved in. At the same time this project, which combines the talents of Belgian stalwarts Teun Verbruggen (drums) and Jozef Dumoulin (keyboards) with those of Norwegian experimentalists Stian Westerhus (guitar) and Arve Henriksen (trumpet), also has an entirely different identity. Free improvisation, jazz residue and electronic interventions/manipulations are woven together in an organically flowing crossover that hints at a Northern vastness and utilizes a complex inner map that guides the audience past labyrinthine panoramas, intricate textures and spontaneous interaction. As such, they incorporate both crackling, whirling walls of sound and claustrophobic whispers. Warped Dreamer looks toward the future in a way that makes the question whether it’s in or out completely irrelevant. It’s everywhere at once.
Here's Warped Dreamer in concert in Antwerp (B), February 2014.
The Belgian Rat Record label will release an album with material from the four concerts that Warped Dreamer did at 'Het Bos' in Antwerp and started a crowdfunding campaign. Check it out because there are some nice offers being made !! https://www.crofun.be/nl/project/warped-dreamer-live-1#.VoeLq_nhBhF
The German Psychofon Records label has released the latest Ostrich Von Nipple album.
It's a 2-track 10" vinyl album and it includes a CD (with the same tracks) and a button as a bonus.
The above picture is the cover of the CD.
I'll be adding a picture of the 10" tomorrow.
This is superb. Out of this world. Artwork by Poxodd.
For those unfamiliar with Ostrich Von Nipple, here's a sample of one of his previous albums :
Influenced by The Residents, and featuring Nolan Cook (of Residents fame) !!
