STÉPHANE GALLAND - KANDA

  • Stéphane Galland: Kanda
(2025, cd, The Netherlands, challenge records)
For his latest project, Stéphane Galland is collaborating with Lúcia Pires (flute, EWI & electronics) and Louise van den Heuvel (bass & chompi).

I picked up the album after the CD release concert at De Singel in Antwerp a couple of days ago.
The concert was excellent, and the CD is even better.

In the liner notes, Stéphane explains Kanda:
It is the foundational pulse from which our music grows, a sacred space where three distinct voices meet in a common exploration.
adding
Our collaboration is a celebration of symbiotic differences: a trio spanning nations, generations, and roles, united by a shared curiosity for rhythm's infinite possibilities. This diversity is our strength. It si why we delve into uneven time signatures, polyrhythms, and morphing grooves, weaving in electronics and textures to mirror the complex, rich tapestry of human connection in sound.

The result can be enjoyed in 7 fascinating pieces.
It's quite a funny contradiction: the music is rhythmically complex, yet it has a calming and relaxing effect. At least, that's how I experience it.

Beautiful !!
Here's a live session from a earlier this year :

STEPHANE GALLAND & THE RHYTHM HUNTERS

Stéphane Galland & The Rhythm Hunters will be releasing their first album next month.

Today the first single of Stéphane Galland's upcoming album "Stéphane Galland & The Rhythm Hunters" was released. Stéphane about the first track, entitled "The Lindy Effect":

'A phenomenon that suggests that the longer a non-perishable thing has survived into existence, the longer its life expectancy. I started using quintuplets (a beat divided into 5) as a main subdivision many years ago, and today it’s becoming more and more common. This composition is built entirely on this principle, as is Transe Culture. Long live the quintuplets.'

With Stéphane Galland (drums), Shoko Igarashi (tenor saxophone), Sylvain Debaisieux (alto saxophone), Pierre-Antoine Savoyat (trumpet), Wajdi Riahi (piano) and Louise van den Heuvel (bass).

The debut album of Stéphane Galland & The Rhythm Hunters is coming your way April 26 on Challenge Records International.

DEEP IN THE DEEP - AU FOND DANS LA MER...

Somewhere during the early ninetees, bass clarinet player and composer Antoine Prawerman assembled a group of musicians to perform his compositions. This resulted in an ensemble that featured some of the best Belgian jazz musicians with Pierre Van Dormael on the guitar, Bo Van Der Werf on baritone sax, Kris Defoort on piano, Otti Van Der Werf on electric bass, Stéphane Galland on the drums, and Antoine Prawerman on the bass clarinet.

The ensemble released a second album, "Snake Ear", in 2000. Both albums are rather rare so you shouldn't hesitate when you come across them.

DEEP IN THE DEEP

If you like the music of Aka Moon and Greetings From Mercury, you should also check out Deep In The Deep, another Belgian jazz band that mixes complex rhythms, European tradition and African vibes.
It should come as no surprise that all of these bands have the same drummer: Stéphane Galland.

"Au Fond Dans La Mer" was the first album by Deep In The Deep. It got released in 1995 !
