KLANGGALERIE RELEASES DELUXE VERSION OF SNAKEFINGER'S "GREENER POSTURES"
Saturday, August 24, 2024
THE RESIDENTS PRESENT BUY OR DIE
Featuring key singles, vital album tracks and a number of recordings appearing on CD for the first time, as well as previously unheard material from Schwump, Snakefinger, MX-80 Sound and Gary Panter, ‘Buy Or Die!’ is not only an insight into The Residents’ world but also into the workings of their DIY mindset, with most of the tracks here being recorded in the group’s own studio, and released in artwork produced by their own graphics department. From established names such as Yello and The Residents themselves, to lesser-known gems by Fred Frith, Tuxedomoon et al, this is a distinctive snapshot of that experimental and open-minded time and place, as seen through the lense of one of America’s most adventurous artists.
Complete with a 7,500 word first hand account essay from The Residents’ Mysterious Archivist, plenty of unusual and rare imagery and many tracks sourced directly from the Ralph tape archive, all overseen by The Residents (enabled by RA), ‘Buy Or Die!’ will entertain, enthral and infuriate in equal measure.

SNAKEFINGER - CHEWING HIDES THE SOUND (DELUXE)
Klanggalerie's deluxe reissue of Snakefinger's "Chewing Hides The Sound" arrived last week.
"Chewing Hides The Sound" came out in 1979 on Ralph Records. It includes classics such as his Kraftwerk cover "The Model", "What Wilbur?" and "Picnic In The Jungle". The songs on the album were co-written with The Residents. The music showcased Lithman's distinctive slide guitar playing and often surreal imagery. At the same time, a string of singles was released. All tracks that were exclusive to these releases are added as bonus tracks here. Very recently, a so far unknown remix of the whole album was discovered in the Residents' archive. It was made in 1987 in preparation for the Snakey Wake by The Residents and has never been published in any form. Klanggalerie are now proud to present you this lost gem for the first time ever.

This one is really doing it for me this morning. Two of these weirdos are gone now. We'll be releasing an LP by each of them soon (maybe July / Aug?). Grab a copy of this album while you can. There's a few mint, unnumbered copies for sale that we had locked up in the archives. Both the purple and black and the yellow inside clear vinyl editions are there if ya want one. https://secretrecords.bandcamp.com/track/walter-westinghouse

SNAKEFINGER'S VESTAL VIRGINS - NIGHT OF DESIRABLE OBJECTS
- snakefinger's vestal virgins: night of desirable objects
(2018, cd, austria, klanggalerie gg258)
"Night Of Desirable Objects" was a project of Snakefinger's Vestal Virgins, a band that featured Eric Drew Feldman on keyboards and synthesizers. It got released in the year that he passed away.
Klanggalerie has done a superb job in making a number of Snakefinger albums available again. Housed in beautiful digipacks, they already released "Chewing Hides The Sound", "Greener Postures" and "Manual of Errors". "Night Of Desirable Objects" fits in perfectly.
Klanggalerie:
Snakefinger surely needs not much of an introduction. Born Philip Charles Lithman in London, he moved to San Francisco in 1971. His roots lie in the British blues scene, but he soon became friends with The Residents who also gave him the name Snakefinger based on a photograph of Lithman performing, in which his finger looks like a snake about to attack his violin. In 1972 Lithman returned to England and formed the pub rock band Chilli Willi and the Red Hot Peppers. After the lack of success of the second album, he returned to the states and work on his solo albums co-written and produced by The Residents began. Night of Desirable Objects was Snakefinger's fourth and final studio album, recorded with the Vestal Virgins and released by Ralph Records in 1987. It featured a variety of styles including jazz, folk, rock, gospel and polka, and displayed a compositional maturity. Snakefinger suffered a heart attack and died on 1 July 1987 in Linz, Austria while touring in support of the album, on the same day the album's first single was released: "There's No Justice In Life". As with all previous re-issues by us, this album will come remastered and with bonus tracks.

SNAKEFINGER - CHEWING HIDES THE SOUND
- snakefinger: chewing hides the sound
(2016, cd, austria, klanggalerie gg220)
All three, "Chewing Hides The Sound", "Greener Postures" and "Manual Of Errors" have recently been re-released by Klanggalerie.
True, the album is from 1979 and it has been re-released on both vinyl and CD in the late eighties and nineties, but just in case that you don't already have it (or that you need an extra copy), this Klanggaerie re-issue is excellent.
Perfect sound, great package and a couple of bonus tracks (from early singles).

Re-released by Klanggalerie with a number of live bonus tracks from the 1981 Melbourne concert.

CHILLI WILLI AND THE RED HOT PEPPERS
Snakefinger's band.
Press note for the soon to be released 2CD anthology, "Real Sharp" :
When it came to recording their first LP "Chilli Willi and the Red Hot Peppers - Kings Of The Robot Rhythm" in 1972, duo Martin Stone and Philip Lithman asked various members of Brinsley Schwarz (Nick Lowe, Billy Rankin and Bob Andrews) to join them just for the sessions.
The result led the pair to recruit a bushel of full-time Red Hot Peppers in the form of Paul "Diceman" Bailey, Paul "Bassman" Riley and Pete Thomas to hit the road.Incredibly, not even the ensuing 400 gigs in two years and the release of a second album Bongos Over Balham by the expanded line-up, was enough to sustain the enterprise. Arguably, at their peak after the Naughty Rhythms Tour of 1975, (with other British "pub rock" groups, Kokomo and Dr. Feelgood), the band broke up.
In 1974, Zig Zag editor Andy Childs wrote "The number of English bands who are currently performing and perfecting the many eclectic styles of American music can be counted on the thumb of one hand…they are Chilli Willi and the Red Hot Peppers. To see them live is an experience. Their music melts your heart, invites you to dance and sing along, and when it's all over, you feel a rush of energy and exhilaration pulsing through your blood…like you don't quite believe what you've heard or seen, so come back and shout for more and you come back and see them again and again.” "REAL SHARP" is a thrilling two CD anthology from the epicentre of pub rock, packed tight with rare and original recordings plus twenty-four pages of antics and Barney Bubbles artwork – and still only for the price of a pint and a packet of fags. This collection is dedicated to the memory of Martin Stone, Phil Lithman and Barney Bubbles.
