LAZULI - 4603 BATTEMENTS
- lazuli: 4603 battements
(2011, cd, fr, eclats - bzz 035)
Earlier this year, French prog-rock band Lazuli released their fifth album.
Dark, melodic, poetic and powerful.
I saw them at the Zappanale festival a couple of weeks ago, where they performed at the mainstage at midnight. Fabulous.
ERASMUS QUINTET - SERIOUS FOLLY
- erasmus quintet: serious folly
(2010, cd, usa, nhic records)
On "Serious Folly", the ensemble presents improvised music, where rigid, almost machine-like rhythmic patterns are the basis for group improvisations.
Add to this that the instrumentation (two guitars, accordion, sax and percussion) does not include a bass and drum rhythm section, and you will understand that the result does not really sound like something that one encounters very often.
Contrary to the recent improvised jazz "Lubricity" release by the Mayhem Circus Electric (that shares quite a number of members with the Erasmus Quintet), "Serious Folly" has a more straight-forward, modern / classical approach.
Both ensembles are into improvisation, and yet have a completely different sound.
"Serious Folly" is challanging, and not easy, but worth your attention.
If you're in to experimental, improvised music, you should give this a try.

MAYHEM CIRCUS ELECTRIC - LUBRICITY
- mayhem circus electric: lubricity
(2010, cd, usa, nhic records)
Mayhem Circus Electric (MCE) is a music ensemble from New Haven, CT.
The group found its origin in the New Haven Improvisers Collective.
On "Lubricity", we catch the MCE on November 7, 2009, at the 'Firehouse 12'. At that time, the ensemble consisted of Pete Brunelli (bass), Jeff Cedron (guitar), Bob Gorry (guitar), Paul McGuire (sax & djembe), Nate Trier (keyboards & djembe), John Venter (bass clarinet), and Stephen Zieminski (drums & percussion).
Improvised jazz. An excellent rhythm section. Nice themes and fine improvisations. Quite impressive.
The album got released by NHIC Records and you can find some audio samples of the disc over at the website: http://www.nhic-records.com/CD_NHIC-005/MCE_Lubricity.html
Here's a (raw) clip of what the MCE is about:

PALERMO, KENEALLY & NAPOLEON MURPHY BROCK
A message from Ed Palermo:
Folks, this is a big one.
October 5, 6 and 7. That's THREE nights, the Ed Palermo Big Band will join forces with Napoleon Murphy Brock and Mike Keneally at the IRIDIUM nightclub in Manhattan.
My band has played many times with Napoleon, including a sold out night a month ago at Iridium.
When we played at the BOTTOM LINE for 9 years, Mike Keneally would periodically grace us with his genius. Every time was pure magic.
Both Mike and Napoleon performed with Frank Zappa and were VERY important to the Zappa bands they played in.
And now we have both Napoleon AND Mike. I'm thrilled beyond words.
