KAMEEL - VARIOMATIC

  • Kameel: Variomatic
        (2025, cd, Belgium, ppr)
We went to see Kameel in concert yesterday.
It was the album presentation for "Variomatic", their third release.
What a joy. And only not because of the presence of special guests Joppe Bestevaar, Tim Vanhamel, and Rudy Trouvé, but also because this new music that the band presented is just an amazing.
Experimental, jazzy music, with lots of improvisations and hints of exotica. Loved it.

I was happy to that I had been able to arrange a stool (well, two actually) as the venue had changed the setting from the (seated) theatre to the (standing room) podium only shortly in advance.
It did contribute to the 'club feeling', but I did see quite a number of the older folks looking for a seat at the surrounding raised platform while the concert went on.

We had caught Kameel in concert a couple of years ago already, at the Mosae Zappa festival in Heerlen. But that was on a Sunday afternoon, standing room only, and on day three of the festival.
There were only a handful of people in attendance, and I don't need to tell you that I did not stay until the end either. Not because of the music, but because of the circumstances.
If you want people to enjoy an experience, you have to create the perfect environment.
If you're a bit younger, that could mean having a bar nearby, or a mosh-pit, or whatever.
When you get a bit older, or when you really want to focus on the sound / the music, you appreciate a comfortable seat.

Anyway, it was a very fine concert by Kameel at CC De Werft in Geel.
And listening to "Variomatic", I can only add that the album is excellent !

Next to the CD, there are also two vinyl versions: a single LP, but also a second version that comes with an additional second LP, with an improvised set.
That one's still wrapped...

If you want to check out Kameel (and you should), go to their Bandcamp page.
Here's  the link to their first album:
