NEW NIKS - PENGUIN VILLAGE

New Niks is drummer / composer Arend Niks' project. Arend had release a couple of solo albums previous to this one, but "Penguin Village" was the first release of his New Niks quartet.

Before I had listened to any of Arend's solo work, I had seen him performing a couple of times as part of Corrie van Binsbergen's Corrie en de Grote Brokken and with CRAM, and heard him on Drummers Double Bill. Arend's a good drummer. He's got a great groove going.

As a composer and a bandleader, he's a real discovery. His compositions are witty and imaginative. I love the unexpected changes in rhythm and the quirky melody lines.
The New Niks quartet consists of Arend Niks on drums, Erwin Hoorweg on electric piano, Jasper le Clercq on violin, and Andreas Suntrop on electric guitar. Great playing, nice arrangements and great solos.

Arend Niks produces music that makes you happy. This is new jazz (with a zappa-twist).
Higly recommended.

Here's 'Cookie Escape', from a 2009 concert.
