Where’s our equipment?
The 1971 European tour had several challenges. The show in Odense in Denmark was one. The fire in Montreux and the grim Rainbow concert are both well documented. Prior to those shows The Mothers played Fyens Forum Odense. Shortly before the concert started it was announced that amplifiers and the main part of the instruments belonging to Zappa and The Mothers, had been stuck in a snowstorm in Malmø, Sweden. It was announced that Zappa and his musicians would come and perform anyway using the equipment owned by the local warm-up bands Frank Steen Band and Love Story. According to Barry Miles’ book «Zappa told the band to relax and have a good time, allowed the band to have a few drinks before the show.»
The Mothers put on a outstanding and dynamic show. The setlist deviates with some new and rarely played songs with this line-up, like early versions of The Grand Wazoo and Sleep Dirt. Both possibly world premiers. The show continued and Frank told the audience to pretend that they were at the Fillmore East and hit the first chord to the Mud Shark.
