‘Ciaconne Alla Zappa’ was commissioned and written in 2014 for the Minkin-Shemer Harpsichord Duo. The piece is, by definition, of a somewhat odd nature. It emerges and exists on the narrow boundary between the classical Renaissance form known as the “chaconne” with its characteristically repeating patterns and the sharp raw sound, typical of rock-music of the 20th century. The work is a tribute to one of the great musicians of the late 20th century, Frank Zappa; a modest homage to a great “musical law breaker”, whose contribution to the development of music is yet to be appreciated and understood.
