ZAPPANALE 2025 FLASHBACKS - - - FRIDAY - - - HOPSCOTCH

Friday morning, we visited the exhibition.
Located at the Zappanale Headquarters in the center of Bad Doberan, the expo focussed on graphic artist Wittek and on experimental photographer Bent Szameitat.
Both have been working with Clémence Manachère (Hopscotch) and have even participated during gigs, providing live artwork.

In his art, Wittek (real name Thomas Wittke) combines different styles and techniques.
The below drawing / collage was used for Hopscotch's "White Page" project.
I love the fine balance between structure and chaos, and how he highlights certain details.
Beautiful.
(Witek was present during the entire festival and provided live drawings during different concerts - more on that later)

Bent Szameitat captures movement and sound in one picture, or in one moving picture. Impossible to explain but quite adventurous to look at, or to experience.

Our visit to the expo dovetailed seamlessly with the Hopscotch concert that took place later in the day. On the festival grounds.

Hopscotch mastermind Clémence Manachère (flute, soprano sax) was joined by Björn Lücker (drums), Tristan Xavier Köster (cello), Niklas Werk (guitar / electronics), and Ludvig Søndergaard (drums).

The ensemble performed works by Frank Zappa, as well as original pieces by Clémence.
Between the pieces, Clémence explained how she is fascinated by numbers (which is proven by the titles of her compositions).

I just loved how Clémence showed a similar approach as the graphic artists she's working with.
Too bad that there was no beamer present at the concert. It would have given the concert an extra dimension.

But even without any graphic support, the concert was great.
It was structured chaos. Like a collage.

Parts were like clockwork, like different gears in a watch: all turning and setting each other in motion. Other parts consisted of different layers, stretched out, sometimes repetitive but also expanding.

Here's 'II.2', recorded about a month ago. It's also one of the pieces that got performed at Zappanale.
