In this episode I continue to recall where the solos came from and my approach to playing them. I also discuss my overall approach to playing my dad's music and the way own style of guitar playing has developed.

Their latest release could not really convince me, but seeing The Golden Dawn Arkestra in concert should be quite an experience...

The Pandemic Dam Breaks for Prolific Bassist & Composer Steve Horowitz Releases Two Albums of New and Exciting Music!
Composer of the original score to the Academy Award Nominated film “Super Size Me” Steve Horowitz releases “Old Monsters Trio” and “Mr. E”
A creator of odd but highly accessible sounds and a diverse and prolific musician, Steve Horowitz is perhaps best known for his original Score to the Academy Award Nominated film “Super Size Me.” The artist behind Twenty Nine albums of mind bending original music, a Grammy, Webby and Kid Screen award winning composer producer, he currently resides in San Francisco.
Steve is now releasing two new albums “Old Monsters Trio” and “Mr. E”
“Old Monsters Trio”
“Old Monsters Trio” is an album featuring Jim Bove on drums, Scott Looney on piano and features the compositions and bass playing of Steve Horowitz. Recorded January of 2022 at studio 43 in SF.
The band New Monsters recorded three albums, the first one featuring the music of Dan Plonsey. The second album recorded live at studio 55 in San Rafael, and the third album “Point Cloud.”
For this album Steve reached back into his substantial back catalog of twenty-nine albums from different periods in his career and brought them to the band to recompose, rearrange and reimagine. The theme of this recording is transformation, where old becomes new again.
Let me explain…
The opening piece “Happy Eating Theme” is a reimagining of the theme from the academy award nominated indie hit documentary film “Super Size Me.” The second track “Aesthetic Nourishment'” is a trio version of a chamber piece written for the Red Desert Ensemble. “I Am No Ordinary Mortal,” the third cut, is a re-examination of a tune that was written for the television show “I Bet You Will” which ran on MTV. The fourth cut “Quasi-Eternity” is a re-orchestration of a graphic score from the 1990’s called “Party Of Four,” originally released on Steve’s third album San Francisco chronicled. “Bad Taste For High culture” the fourth cut on the album, is taken from a tune that Steve wrote in high school, a simple angular melody that he gave to Scott and he put new chords and new harmony to it. Number five “Strength Through Embarrassment” is another early 90s graphic score. “Wild Man The Throne God” is another tune from I Bet You Will, and the last piece on the album “The Expendable Man” is a trio exploration of concert music written for string quartet and trumpet.
And for the very first time, Steve is experimenting with releasing this album in a brand new way, in three different flavors. The first is the Deluxe Blend (Green) which features all the tracks and switches back and forth between monk-esq jazz and abstract contemporary compositions. The Jazzy Blend (Purple) features only the four jazzy cuts in an EP format. And the Abstract Blend (Orange) features only the contemporary compositions in EP format. Now listeners can experience the music from different angles and different points of view and listen based on taste and preference. Some people will only like the jazz stuff and some people will only like the abstract weird stuff and others will love them mixed together in a strange funky brew.
The album covers feature the artwork of Joseph Guillette also known as JTA, the amazing artist who has worked with Steve on most of his album covers since they met in early 2000s working together with Morgan's Spurlock on “I Bet You Will” and “Super Size Me.”

"Mountains Came Out Of The Sky" is the title of a new book by Will Romano.
Paperback and e-book.
From its artful beginnings (Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd, the Mothers of Invention and those progressive forebearers the Sgt. Pepper-era Beatles) through the towering guitar solos monumental synthesizer banks and mind-boggling special effects of the Golden Age of Prog (Rush, Pink Floyd, Yes, ELP, Genesis, Jethro Tull, King Crimson, UK) through the radio-friendly pop era (Asia, the Phil Collins-led Genesis and a reformed Yes) and right up to the present state of the art (Marillion, Spock's Beard and Mars Volta) this is a wickedly incisive tour of rock music at its most spectacular. This is indeed the book prog rock fans have been waiting for the only one of its kind as fantastic as the subjects it covers.

IN SHORT
You can’t find a more culturally diverse record label and booking agency than MoonJune, so it’s wholly fitting that the first in a planned series of international festivals will take place this June (wink) in MoonJune founder Leonardo Pavkovic’s native Bosnia-Herzegovina, a crucible and crossroads of myriad cultures since ancient times. Gathering a planetary cast of MoonJune musicians spanning the USA, Uruguay, Indonesia, France/Vietnam, Republic of Tuva, Russia, Germany, Italy, Spain/Portugal, and Israel, the inaugural event will be staged at historic public spaces in Leonardo’s hometown of Jajce, a famed beauty spot and UNESCO World Heritage Site candidate.
MEMORIES TO MAKE
The festival culminates a commemorative expedition where the “MoonJunit” – Leonardo Pavkovic himself, his earliest friend Borislav Boro Kresojević, musician/scribe Dennis Rea, and documentarians Vlad Oboronko and Anthony Garone – journey to portentous locales from Leonardo’s past where the seeds of the now global “MoonJunista” community germinated. The festival activities will be part of an illustrated biography of Leonardo in book form, and a documentary movie about Mr. MoonJune’s formation, present and future plans, plus audio/video documentation of the festival itself.
Mr. MOONJUNE
Born in Jajce in 1962 when Bosnia was still a part of Yugoslavia, from an early age Leonardo yearned to discover the unknown lands on the “other side of the mountain.” Gradually forging his own path with serendipity on his side, this polyglot citizen of the world relocated to NYC and went on to build an improbably successful one-man international music enterprise in defiance of standard music-biz practice – remarkably, with no concession of musical excellence and imagination. Along the way, he gathered around himself an ever-expanding constellation of adventurous musicians ranging from gifted lesser- known talents to such zeitgeist-defining figures as drum exemplar Bill Bruford, who hailed Leonardo’s abilities as an “enabler” of aspiring musicians, and guitar avatar Allan Holdsworth, who affectionately dubbed him “Nardini” and his singular approach to life “Nardinism.”
BACK TO THE ROOTS
In 2019, 39 years after he’d left Bosnia for distant shores, Leonardo tramped back over the mountain to Jajce to present a concert featuring MoonJune musicians Dwiki Dharmawan (Indonesia), Kamal Musallam (Palestine), Asaf Sirkis (Israel), and Boris Savoldelli (Italy). He and the assembled musicians met with an extended ovation from townspeople and municipal officials appreciative of the global connections he’d forged with their home. That homecoming concert, organized by lifelong friend and fellow son of Jajce Borislav Kresojevic, set the table for the First International MoonJune Music Festival, again organized by Borislav, sponsored by the town, and free to all in Jajce’s spectacular waterfall park and public square.
GUIDING PRINCIPLES
MoonJune’s guiding principles – or as Leonardo prefers, “modus moonjundi” – are in tune with what legendary British bass player Roy Babbington (Soft Machine and much more) memorably described as “poetic entanglement.” That is, the art of being alert to, and confidently acting on, the affinities and happenstances of the moment, in a spirit of openness, curiosity, and goodwill. In this anniversary year, the MoonJunit’s mission is to spread unity, joy, and hope through music, toward the elusive goal of peace and understanding on this troubled planet earth.

I missed the recent Arkestra gig in Belgium because I was abroad.
Fortunately, we've got the albums although it's not getting easier with all the different versions (LP, CD, expanded CD's, and different digital download versions,...)
Anyway, it looks like the Exystence blog is also putting Sun Ra in the spotlight:

The Italian Alma Saxophone Quartet released a Frank Zappa medley on their “Alma Likes To Be In America” album. The medley included ‘Peaches En Regalia’, ‘Son Of Mr.Green Genes’ and ‘Zomby Woof’ in an arrangement by Riccardo Nebbiosi.
Streaming all over, but also out on CD.
The entire CD is fun to listen to. Pieces by Bernstein, Gershwin, Glenn Miller, Chick Corea, and... Frank Zappa.
The Zappa Medley sounds very vidid and dynamic. Great playing, a beautiful arrangement, and a fine solo !
The Cherry Red record label has been issuing quite a number of compilation albums lately. Next up is "Darker Than Blue":
NEW 3CD CLAMSHELL BOXED SET OF THE ALBUMS AND SINGLES BY THE BAND BABE RUTH RECORDED FOR THE HARVEST LABEL BETWEEN 1972 AND 1975
FEATURING THE ALBUMS ‘FIRST BASE’, ‘AMAR CABALLERO’ AND ‘BABE RUTH’
Which means that it will also include the band's version of FZ's 'King Kong', as released on "First Base" in 1972.
As mentioned on Andrew's Idiot Bastard Son's Newspage:
A second teaser for the Zappa / Erie box set appeared a couple of days ago.
Saxophone and harp might not be an everyday combination, but it works.
Compositions by Anthony Braxton.
The world knows them as Andy Niven, Eric Klerks and Max Kutner, but we music freaks refer to them as the Android Trio.
And they have a new album out.
Download/streaming-only as it seems.
Great !!
