CHICKENFOOT - III

Chickenfoot consists of Sammy Hager (Van Halen lead singer), Michael Anthony (Van Halen bass player), Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer) and guitar wizard Joe Satriani. It even includes Mike Keneally somewhere on a little keyboard part (says Joe in one of the videos).
"III" is their brand-new, second album, and it rocks. The american release date is set for September 27, but we Yuripean folks can already find it in our stores.
My copy includes a set of 3-D pictures, a pair of 3-D glasses, and a bonus DVD ("Making Of The Album").
It rocks.

Fun. Straight-forward rock 'n' roll.

"Aphrodite Nights"
Chris Opperman

Musicians:
Ryan McCausland, gourd tree (invented by Harry Partch)

Produced by Chris Opperman.
Recorded, mixed, and mastered by Stephen Kolakowski.
Artwork by Tony Akins.
Recorded at the Harry Partch Institute at Montclair State University with special permission from Dean Drummond.

“Aphrodite Nights” was composed for the gourd tree, one of many unique instruments invented by American composer Harry Partch (1901 – 1974). The instrument was built on a bough of eucalyptus to which several gourds with bells have been attached, each resonating a different microtonal pitch.

While studying microtonal music at the Harry Partch Institute in Montclair, NJ, professor and composer Dean Drummond showed us some videos of gamelan music that I found to be very fascinating and I decided to compose something that was reminiscent of that style on the gourd tree.

As wonderful, imaginative, and flexible language is, and although words carry tremendous meaning, I often find it difficult to use words to truly attempt to “explain the unexplainable.” The benefit of instrumental music is that you can communicate feelings and ideas with pure sound, from the world of the wordless into another plane, using music as a way to transport the listener into that plane.

One of the most powerful benefits of music is its ability to conjure up past memories and feelings, and remind them of the past in the present.

“Aprhodite Nights” is about the wild magic of love and about those moments when two people become lost in one another, each partner being in awe of the other and giving themselves over completely to those feelings, exploring each others minds, hearts, and bodies with equal measures of caution and abandon. Those evenings when time seems to stand still and that they are the only two beings in existence, subtly guided in their movements by instinct and by the power of the Goddess of Love, Aphrodite, love being the driving force behind existence and creativity.

SUN RA ARKESTRA - LIVE IN OAKLAND

You're probably thinking: 'Didn't I see these DVDs mentioned before in this very blog?', and you're right. I most probably flashed these covers to you earlier.
But as I'm getting ready for the Sun Ra Box that is to be released on Transparency, I'm adding snippets of data to the various Sun Ra releases.

"Live In Oakland" was the latest Sun Ra DVD that got released on the Transparency label. It presents the two sets that the Arkestra played in Oakland on November 2, 1991.

An excellent recording of a superb concert. You need to see this. Period.

And, no, the following fragment is not from the Oakland DVD.

SUN RA ARKESTRA - LONE STAR ROADHOUSE AND AFRICAN STREET

"Lone Star Roadhouse and African Street Festival" is the fifth volume in the Transparency Sun Ra DVD series. Released in 2006, the DVD offers two concerts from 1989.

Both concerts were video-taped from the audience which means that the audio isn't perfect, and that the video images move around a lot. The good thing, however, is that the quality is very good. This is no third generation copy. My guess is that it's taken from the master recording.

I just love these recordings. The Arkestra does not just play a concert. They bring a show. It's DVDs like this that enable us to experience what these shows were (and are) like.

SUN RA ARKESTRA / RUFUS HARLEY QUINTET - WASHINTON DC

Volume four in Transparency's Sun Ra series presents two concerts that were recorded at the WMFW Pacifica Radio Cap City Jazz Festvial in Washinton DC in 1987.
The first part is a Sun Ra Arkestra concert, the second part captured Rufus Harley.

This DVD is a turning point in the Transparency Sun Ra video collection, as the quality is quite good.
Obviously taken from the master recording, this is a must-see.
It's a one-camera audience recording, but a pretty good one.
And the concerts rock !!

Essential stuff.

SUN RA - SOLO PIANO & MONTREUX AND LUGANO

Adding bits and pieces to the immense Sun Ra discography, I just added some data for this 2005 DVD-release on the Transparency label.

Volume three of the Transparency Sun Ra series presented three recordings that were originally broadcast on tv:

  • Sun Ra : solo piano -- a concert in Venice from 1978

  • The Sun Ra Arkestra -- the Montreux Jazz Festival concert from July 9, 1976

  • The Sun Ra Arkestra -- a concert in Lugano from 1985

It's a quite interesting collection, but as the video quality isn't top, this is for hardcore fans only.

GLENN FERRIS

Glenn Ferris played the trombone in Zappa's Petit and Grand Wazoo tours.
He could also be heard on LeBocal Zappa tribute album in 2003.
A little while ago, Jan van Kemenade came across this ad / poster in France:

June to September 2011, Glenn Ferris toured with Stéphane Belmondo, Cecil McBee, Baptiste Trotignon, Jean-Jacques Quesada, Billy Hart, Manuel Rocheman, Jean Tousaint and Kirk Lightsey as part of a Jazz & Wine tour.

FAMILIAR LOOKING ARTWORK?

"Tango From Obango", an album by the Wiener Art Orchester.
But does a part of this album cover not look familiar to you?
Maybe it's some sort of Gary Panter tribute?

THE ZAPPANALE REPORT - PART 5

For me, the latest edition of Zappanale lasted five days. I arrived on Wednesday (the 17th), and went back home on Monday morning (the 22nd).
As always, Zappanale is quite an absorbing experience. I can tell you a bit about what I did and what I saw and heard, but that's only a part of the story.
Zappanale is like being on another planet, but it's also like coming home.
So many likeminded people and so much great music...
So here's part 5 of this year's Zappanale tale.
Wednesday had been a fine start. I had already seen some friends, and I had enjoyed Chris Opperman's concert a lot. So I was ready for Thursday.
After a Zappateers breakfast downtown Bad Doberan, and checking out the camping site and putting up the Zappateers tent, I returned to the little village for a visit of the Zappanale Expo. I had already given it a look on Wednesday, but I wanted to give it all a closer examination.
This year, Dieter Jakob had gathered works from Cal Schenkel, Carlos Zerpa, Lothar Taube, and Helmut King. A pretty impressive line-up.

Entering the expo hall, the immediate eye-catcher was Cal Schenkel's series of Zappa & Beefheart album covers: a beautifulseries of 7 giclée prints.
The hall on the right had some fine pieces by Helmut King, including a Beefheart tribute.
Here are some pictures of the Helmut King artworks (pics by Steffen Schindler).

The room on the left had works by Carlos Zerpa, and by Lothar Taube. I wan't impressed by Lothar Taube's work, but Zerpa's pieces were excellent.

Here are some shorts of Lothar Taube's work (again by Steffen Schindler):

And here are some pictures of Carlos Zerpa's work. I like this. Great size (they were huge), great colours and alienating subjects. I like this a lot. (thanks for the pictures, Steffen !!)

LAZULI - REPONSE INCONGRUE A L'INELUCTABLE

Here's another fine album by Lazuli. (You should be able to tell by now that I was really impressed by the Lazuli concert at Zappanale.)
"Réponse Incongrue à l'Inéluctable" got released in 2009 and it was the band's fourth release.
The title might be translated into something like "a inapropriate (or bizarre) response to the inevitable" and it fits the package. One of the most impressive pieces on this disc is "On Nous Ment Comme On Respire" (They Lie To Us Like They Breathe) about global warming, pollution and G8. And it's not just a strong message, the song is very powerful as well: a great rock song with eastern influences, samples and a children choir.
Actually, the entire album is very good. I've been giving it a couple of spins that last couple of days, and it asks for more.

Here's 'On Nous Ment', Live in Montreux, from a little while ago.

DEVIN FLYNN AND GARY PANTER - DEVIN AND GARY GO OUTSIDE

Mini-album by Devin Flynn and Gary Panter. The album featues Gary Panter on guitar and vocals and Devin Flynn on bass, keys and percussion.

It's sounds like a psychedelic hobby or project, but that doesn't mean that I don't like it.

And during 'Behind The Sunglass' the theme of Zappa's 'Take Your Clothes Off' is quoted. Reason enough to check it out.

-- info: Nikolai Zaharov

KEEN - I DON'T LIKE THIS MUSIC

I don't know much about this band. My best guess is that this is a private release by an italian quartet.
Garbriele Ferro on guitar and vocals, Sandro Berri also on guitar and vocals, massimiliano Miotto on bass and vocals, and Claudio Zerbo on drums and vocals.

The music is great: Frank Zappa & Steve Vai - inspired, mostly instrumental, mid-eighties (heavy) rock music.
Probably not the easiest album to find, but it's worth putting on your list.

Fun.

LAZULI - AMNESIE

Adding data and pictures of my favourite recordings to the United Mutations Archives, here's Lazuli's second album. Released in 2003, "Amnésie" shows what Azuli sounded like about 8 years ago.
Comparing this disc with the more recent releases, this is a less powerful, more poppy album.
Lots of electronics, samples and even some soundscapes. Still worth your attention.

PLANET D NONET - WE TRAVEL THE SPACEWAYS

This review needed a couple of modifications, so instead of changing the old entry, I made a new one (and deleted the previous one)

The Planet D Nonet is a Sun Ra tribute band from around Detroit (planet D). Founded in 2007, the band has done a series of annual Sun Ra tribute concerts, each time with a special guest.
In 2009 the band featured professor of Jazz Studies at the Brooklyn College Conservatory of Music, Dr.Salim Washington on oboe and on tenor sax.
In 2010, avant-garde saxophonist and ICP-member Kenny Millions guested with the band.

The Planet D Nonet is lead by James O’Donnell and RJ Spangler. In the liner notes, Rick Steiger and RJ Spangler explain how the both of them started listening to Sun Ra's music over thirty years ago. It’s a fine description of how they became Ra-ophiles, and how they started to play Sun Ra's music. A great story.

On "We Travel The Spaceways: The Music Of Sun Ra", the Planet D Nonet performs an exquisite selection of tunes.

Disc one opens with 'Velvet', a classic Sun Ra tune', followed by the Hobart Dotson penned 'You Never Told Me That You Cared' and 'Enlightenment'. We get beautiful arrangements with impressive solos. Side one continues with 'Interstellar Low Ways', another composition that emerged from the 1950's. This is my favourite track of side one. It has a perfect pace and, again, great solos, featuring Salim Washington.
Next up is (another excellent arrangement) of 'Love In Outer Space'. Both 'Love In Outer Space' and the subsequent 'Kingdom Of Not' were arranged by Brian Casey.
Disc one rounds up with another and quite different version of 'Interstellar Low Ways', and with a high-energy 'Ancient Aiethopia'.

Whereas disc one was recorded in 2010, disc two takes us back to 2009. Firm versions of 'Saturn' and 'Kingdom Of Not', plus the exuberant 'Ancient Aiethopia' set the tone. Again, excellent arrangements combined with fine solos.
'Love In Outer Space' and 'Lights On A Satellite' follow, and show the added value of Kenny Millions. This is great. Really great.
The party continues with a great swing version of 'King Porter Stomp / Big John Special'. And disc two ends with another vigorous 'Ancient Aiethopia'.

Fellow Saturnians, you really need to hear this.
"We Travel The Spaceways: The Music Of Sun Ra" is a great album.
This is a must-have.

This CD is available at CDBaby.com & Dusty Groove America.

CONLON NANCARROW

The German Wergo record label has released a new Conlon Nancarrow album: "As Fast As Possible" (WER 6733).

"American composer Conlon Nancarrow is best known for the groundbreaking compositions he wrote for player piano. Nancarrow was one of the first composers to use musical instruments as mechanical machines, making them play far beyond human performance ability. His central works in this new genre were the Studies for Player Piano, written between 1948 and 1992."

ZAPPANALE 2012

a message from the Arf Society regarding Zappanale 2012

Starting Shot for Zappanale 2012

Dear friends of good music,

just a couple of days ago we had the starting shot for Zappanale #23. The preparations for the pre-sale are going on high level, pre-sale will start in October. The first bands are already booked.

First of all here is the most important news you need for making plans:

Date: Wednesday, august 15th 2012 – Saturday, august 18th 2012
Place: Racetrack Bad Doberan !!!

Yes you’r right, the next Zappanale will end on Sunday morning. We don’t know up to now if there will be more performances on Sunday.

Yes you’r right again, Zappanale starts right away on Wednesday on the Racetrack. There won’t be any performances downtown Bad Doberan. We will start on Wednesday on the Truckstage. Concerts on the main stage will start already on Thursday.

Lectures will be held in the “Green Tent”, it will be much more comfortable for all of you to listen to Jim Cohen and Ben Watson while you are on the Racetrack.

Campinggrounds will already be open on Monday, august 13th 2012, so all of you will have the chance to make a whole week holiday on the beach in Bad Doberan.

Please note: The campingground is only open for festivalticket holders.

More information t.b.a – don’t forget to register for the newsletter.

Arf!

THE ZAPPANALE REPORT - PART 4

The great thing about the Zappanale warm-up parties / concerts, is that everybody knows that it’s the place to be. If you’re already in town on Wednesday or Thursday, you can do whatever you want, wherever you want, but late afternoon is the time to go to the Kamptheater.
Killmenoc kicked off Wednesday on the outside Truckstage, followed by Oozin Goo. I didn’t catch any Oozin Goo, however, as Chris Opperman was to do a (last minute announced) concert inside the Kamptheater.
Chris played a 40-minute set, and was joined by Elizabeth Cary on violin on a couple of tracks.

Chris Opperman: piano
Elizabeth Cary: violin on tracks 4, 5 & 6

For me, this was the real opener of the festival. We got to hear a very fine concert. Too bad that Elizabeth had a bit of trouble playing the beautiful ‘Miles Behind’, but other then that, a very fine concert.

Inside the Kamptheater, I also saw a video & soundcollage by Tonlast, in tribute to Don Van Vliet.
Unfortunately, the video snippets and pictures were a bit blurry. Disturbingly blurry, but I did like the soundscapes. I heard a lot of free jazz, noise, Residents-like music, and more. I’m not 100% sure that this was on Wednesday. Could have been Thursday as well...
Hot Fur was also scheduled to perform on Wednesday. Outside, on the Truckstage. And they did. And just didn’t catch any of it as I was talking to friends. From a distance, I could hear that they sounded pretty good and that they included at least one Zappa composition in their set.
End Day One.

BARNES & BARNES

Earlier today, Belgian cartoonist and painter Kamagurka and his daughter Sarah Yu talked music on Belgian national radio.
We were treated a dose of Zappa, Ween, The Butthole Surfers, and, Barnes & Barnes (with 'Fishheads')!

Barnes & Barnes' famous 1980 short film. Video digitized from the LaserDisc "Bizarre Music Television" (Rhino Video/Image Entertainment, 1992) with audio transferred from the digital soundtrack of the disc. Until this video sees an official DVD release or something similar, what you see here is as good as it will get.

Directed by Bill Paxton. Photographed by Rocky Schenck. Featuring Bill Paxton, Dr. Demento, Bill Mumy, and Robert Haimer.
