Saying that this new series by Crossfire Publications is of historical value, is an understatement. I've been cutting and pasting the various pieces of info (all taken from Greg Russo's liner notes) into the United Mutations Archives all day.
If you have additional info on any of the featured artists, don't hesitate to send it.

All the material is available from CDBaby, iTunes, and the likes.

THE BUFF ORGANISATION REVISITED

• the buff organization: studio 'a'
  (2010, download, -, crossfire publications)

• the buff organization: mono mixes
  (2010, download, -, crossfire publications)

While working at his PAL studio, Paul Buff and his wife Allison recorded a lot of material as The Buff Organization. Only one single got actually released.
"Studio A" is the album that they wanted to release, but never got around to.
"Mono Mixes" is a collection of edits meant for radio promo.

Both albums are part of the collection that Crossfire Publications is releasing. They're download only, and available from CDBaby, iTunes and more.

Tracklists and liner notes have been added to the United Mutations Archives.

21 BURNT WEENY SANDWICHES

Andrew says:
"20 artists were asked to condense the Mothers Of Invention's Burnt Weeny Sandwich album down to 5 minutes. Some succeeded. The results were handed over to Pete Brunelli, who produced a megamix - an excerpt from which provides most of the soundtrack to this 'promo video' for the 21 Burnt Weeny Sandwiches CD that Cordelia Records will unleash shortly to mark the 40th anniversary of the Mothers' album.

During the production of this wondrous music, our dear friend and original Mother, Jimmy Carl Black, sadly passed away. This project is now dedicated to his sweet memory, with mucho love. Read more at: http://idiotbastard.com/21xBWS.htm."

MAHALAI RAI BANDA - GHETTO BLASTERS

• mahala rai banda: ghetto blasters
(2009, cd, ger, asphalt tango records cd-atr 2509)

Mahala Raï Banda combines a number of well-known musicians from Romania. They play a mixture of balkan gypsy music and pop music, backed by a powerfull horn section.

The title says it all: "Ghetto Blasters".
This is party music.
The sort of music that you play loud and that will get the party started.

You can hear that these guys are good. They play good, they play fast, and I'm sure that they will indeed get the party started.
For my taste, however, this is a bit too predictable. There's no coloring outside the lines. And that's the little extra that I would like to have heard.

KOTTARASHKY - OPA HEY!

• kottarashky: opa hey!
(2009, cd, ger, asphalt tango records cd-atr 2609)

Here's another Asphalt Tango Records release, and this one is quite something else.
I mentioned Kottarashky a little while ago already, but I was able to give the entire album a listen.

As far as I can tell, the music on "Opa Hey!" is completely constructed from samples. Quite impressive as the result sounds like a fine mixture of balkan music, gypsy jazz and club beats.

Perfect music to start your day.

Asphalt Tango Records is a Berlin-based record company. They specialise in Balkan music, but as Kottarashky's "Opa Hey!" shows, they're into a more experimental approach as well.
