PANZERBALLETT - ÜBERCODE OEUVRE

  • panzerballett: übercode oeuvre
        (2025, cd, Germany, hcd-pb01)
Jan Zehrfeld's Panzerballett band did it again.

There are only a few bands that have such a distinctive sound that you recognise them after three seconds (which is the same amount of time needed to turn your head to where the music is coming from).
Panzerballett is such a band.
And even more important than the recognisability is the amazing quality.
Technically sophisticated metal-jazz; quirky rhythms with beautiful melodies (spiced with lots of amusing and funny sidesteps).
My cup of tea.

Jan Zehrfeld's guitar playing had me listening in awe, but also definitely worth mentioning is the great sax playing by Florian Fennes and by Georg Gratzer, plus the incredible selection of drummers that participated on the different pieces: Virgil Donati, Marco Minnemann, Sebastian Lanser, Morgan Agren, and Anika Nilles !

Add Joe Doblhofer and Rafael Trujillo as guests guitar soloists, plus Andromeda Anarchia and Conny Kreitmeier donig th vocals on 'Ode To Joy', and you know that "Übercode OEuvre" is something you'll need to check out.
I did, and I wasn't disappointed. Quite the opposite, actually.

Highly recommended !

PANZERBALLETT - PLANET Z

Panzerballett's latest release is called "Planet Z" with the "Z" from Jan Zehrfeld, guitar player, composer and driving force behind Panzerballett.
I my opinion, the "Z" could also stand for Zappa as the music mixes virtuosity with unexpected surprises and a fine dose of humour.

"Planet Z" presents Jan Z. in his typical prog rock / jazz / metal approach: swerling, breathtaking, and tapping your foot at the same time.
For the occasion, Jan asked several top drummers to contribute. Virgil Donati, Marco Minnemann, Morgan Agren...
Great tunes. Original material and pieces by other composers.
Fine arrangements.
And superb drumming.

Here's 'Mind Your Head', with Morgan Agren on drums.

PANZERBALLETT - X-MAS DEATH JAZZ

To be honest, I'm quite fond of christmas music mutations. Take Vince Guaraldi's jazz approach in "A Charlie Brown Christmas", or the Steve Vai compiled "Merry Axemas" albums where various guitar players do classic christmas tunes.
And now there's "X-Mas Death Jazz" where a fine selections of Christmas songs get the Panzerballett treatment. Arranged by (guitarist and composer) Jan Zehrfeld and performed by Jan Zehrfeld, Sebastian Lanser, Heiko Jung, Alexander von Hagke and Joe Doblhofer.
I love it.

Special guests include two of my musical heroes : Mattias 'IA' Eklundh who adds vocals and a number of fine guitar solos, and Mike Keneally who does some great vocals on 'Let It Snow'.

Brilliant !!

I loved the idea of a "X-Mas Death Jazz" album when I first heard about it, and I love the final result even more.

MAKE WEIRD MUSIC

Just in case that you missed it, the Make Weird Music website has done fine interviews with none other than Steve Vai and Mike Keneally.
Check them out here : http://MakeWeirdMusic.com

More recently, Anthony Garone did an interview with Jan Zehrfeld (of Panzerballett fame).
http://www.makeweirdmusic.com/interview/jan-zehrfeld/
Nice. Really nice.

Furthermore, Anthony told me that he is working on an interview that, and I'm quoting, would excite me.
I'm holding my breath (figuratively, of course)...

PANZERBALLETT - BREAKING BRAIN

Jan Zehrfeld's Panzerballett quintet has a new album out.
We had to wait a couple of years for this one, as "Tank Goodness" got released in 2012, but it was worth the wait.
With "Breaking Brain" (a rather applicable title if you'd ask me), the band continues on their ultradynamic jazz-metal path.
Virtuoso performances, interspersed with a dose of humour (Piero Umiliani's / the muppet show's 'Mahna Mahna' and Henry Mancini's 'Pink Panther Theme' are included in the tracklist)

Indian percussionist and vocalist Trilok Guurtu is featured on two tracks, adding another layer to Panzerballett's polyrhythmic pallette.

Recommended !!
