DEVIN TOWNSEND - LIGHTWORK

  • devin townsend: lightwork
(2022, 2cd, europe, inside out music)
As I take recommendations from my musical friends pretty serious, I just had to check out Devin Townsend's "Lightwork" album.
I went for the "Lightwork (Deluxe Edition)" which in this case implies that there is a second, companion disc entitled "Nightwork".

And, yes, I'm quite happy with "Lightwork".
Every review that I had come across mentioned that this was Devin's most accessible albums up until now. I'm not familiar enough with Devin's complete discography to agree or to disagree, but I do know that it has (t)his typical and easily recognisable sound. A bit bombastic at times, and vocals that can switch to screaming every once in a while, but I like it lot and it fits the music perfectly.

Track number six has Jonas Hellborg on bass and features a guitar solo by none other than Mike Keneally. The perfect additional spicing.

Steve Vai and Mattias Eklundh also contributed to "Lightworks", as did  Anneke van Giersbergen.

Recommended listening.

Here's 'Starchasm, Pt.2' with a Steve Vai touch and Anneke van Giersbergen on vocals !

FREAK KITCHEN - NOBODY'S LAUGHING

Around the time of the release of "Move", Freak Kitchen's fifth album, a promotional CD got released in France.
"Move" was the first album with the new line-up. Guitarist Mattias IA Eklundh was still part of the band, but Christer Örtefors (bass) and Björn Fryklund (drums) had only recently replaced Christian Gronlund (bass) and Joakim Sjoberg (drums).

The CD presented and audio and the video clip for 'Nobody's Laughing', plus a medley of all the "Move" tracks.

MATTIAS IA EKLUNDH - FREAK GUITAR

Mattias IA Eklundh released his first solo album in 1999 (not counting his Mr.Libido album from 1996).
As you might know, "Freak Guitar" included a dizzying version of Frank Zappa's 'The Black Page'.
The Japanese edition of "Freak Guitar" had a slightly altered album cover (pictured above), plus one bonus track : 'Our Man In Baijing'.

MR. LIBIDO - SENSUALLY PRIMITIVE

In 1995, Freak Kitchen mastermind and guitar wizard Mattias IA Eklundh wrote and recorded all the music for "Sensually Primitive". He released the album in 1996, using the moniker Mr. Libido.

Despite the fact that there is no guitar on this recording (!!), the album does sound very 'Mattias IA Eklundh'.
Food for Zappa freaks.

PANZERBALLETT - X-MAS DEATH JAZZ

To be honest, I'm quite fond of christmas music mutations. Take Vince Guaraldi's jazz approach in "A Charlie Brown Christmas", or the Steve Vai compiled "Merry Axemas" albums where various guitar players do classic christmas tunes.
And now there's "X-Mas Death Jazz" where a fine selections of Christmas songs get the Panzerballett treatment. Arranged by (guitarist and composer) Jan Zehrfeld and performed by Jan Zehrfeld, Sebastian Lanser, Heiko Jung, Alexander von Hagke and Joe Doblhofer.
I love it.

Special guests include two of my musical heroes : Mattias 'IA' Eklundh who adds vocals and a number of fine guitar solos, and Mike Keneally who does some great vocals on 'Let It Snow'.

Brilliant !!

I loved the idea of a "X-Mas Death Jazz" album when I first heard about it, and I love the final result even more.
