THE HELIOCENTRICS
"Led by the relentless drummer Malcolm Catto, the UK collective's objective lays quite a ways beyond what ordinary listeners know or expect. In an alternative galaxy, where the orbits of Hip-Hop, Funk, Jazz, Psychedelic, Electronic, Avante-Garde and Ethnic music all revolve around “The One” – that's where you might find The Heliocentrics. "

Named after a Sun Ra album, UK band The Heliocentrics have recently released a couple of albums.
"Fallen Angels - The Singles Collection" does indeed collect their previous singles;
"Out There" is the band's first 'real' album
And then there's the Mulatu Astatke / Heliocentrics collaborations entitled "Inspiration Information 3". Ethiopian jazz...
Intrigued? I sure am.

OTTO - LITTLE PIECES
- otto: little pieces
(2008, cd, usa, diversions ddv62401)
Otto, or the Otto Chamber Quartet as they might also be called, recorded two Frank Zappa compositions on their "Little Pieces" album that came out in 2008.
Otto is:
- jim hoke: pedal steel, autoharp
- kirby shelstad: vibes
- robbie shankle: flute, clarinet, sax
- austin hoke: cello
and it's of course Jim Hoke's Pedal Steel that makes this quartet stand out.
Nice coverversions of 'Mom And Dad', and of 'Aybee Sea'.
BLORP ESETTE
In the late seventies, early eighties, the LAFMS released two volumes of "Blorp Esette". Both albums were samplers / compilations of alternative, experimental, outsider music from and around Los Angeles.
Both albums featured Don Van Vliet artwork.
In 1999, the Transparency label released a 4 CD box set, that included all the material of the LAFMS releases.
This box was never easy to find, not even when it just came out, and it has been out-of-print for a long time.
Michael, from the Transparency label, told me that a re-release of this box is scheduled.

HAMILTON STERLING & JIMMY HASLIP - MIGRATION
- hamilton sterling & jimmy haslip: migration
(2009, double layer dvd-audio, usa, helikon sound 2005he)
I knew Jimmy Haslip from his fusion group, the Yellowjackets, and from his collaboration with Allan Holdsworth, Alan Pasqua and Chad Wackerman.
Hamilton Sterling's name didn't ring a bell, but he's probably best know for having contributed (sound editing) to two Acadamy Awards winning films: "The Dark Knight" and "Master and Commander".
So this is quite an unusual team-up, and a pretty good one.
"Migration" is the duo's first release. The music on this album is one big soundscape. The liner notes describe it as "A world-ranging, dark-ambient journey from the rural to the urban and beyond. It was conceived as a journey in sound."
"Migration" will take you on a trip, and every effort is made to make it as enjoyable as possible.
This is no jazz or prog-rock. This is contemporary music that will make you close your eyes and travel in space.
Bass, percussion, synths and computer programming.
I love it.
Did I mention that this disc is food for audiophiles: side 1 has a DVD-video 5.1 Dolby Digital version, and a 2 channel PCM 24bit 48kHz version. Side 2 contains a DVD-audio 5.1 24 bit 48kHz version.
And just to show you how serious these guys are: the cover and inside pictures of "Migration" are courtesy of NASA !!

EVERYTHING BUT THE GIRL - I DIDN'T KNOW I WAS LOOKING FOR LOVE
- everything but the girl: i didn't know i was looking for love
(1993, cd5", uk, warner music / blanco & negro neg64cd)
A bit over fifteen years ago, Everything But The Girl recorded three songs to accompany their 'I Didn't Know I Was Looking For Love' single on an EP release.
One of these songs was Don Van Vliet's 'My Head Is My Only House Unless It Rains'.
All the tracks on this EP, have the typical jazzy, poppy EBTG sound. It fits the Van Vliet composition very well.

BEPPE CROVELLA - WHAT'S RATTLIN' ON THE MOON?
- beppe crovella: what's rattlin' on the moon?
(2010, cd, usa, moonjune mjr030)
With (The) Soft Machine, Mike Ratledge performed and recorded a typical mix of psychedelic music, progressive rock and jazz. And he was not just the keyboard player of the band. He signed for a lot of the compositions as well.
It was 2009 when MoonJune's Leonardo Pavkovic suggested to Italian progressive rock keyboard wizard Beppe Crovella to do something with the compositions of Mike Ratledge. Beppe Crovella didn't hesitate and pulled out his keyboard orchestra: Mellotron, Wurlitzer E200 electric piano, Fender Rhodes Stage 73 electric piano, Hammond Organ M102, Hohner electric piano, Hohner Clavinet D6, Rösler Grand piano, and the Farfisa Professional.
The result is entitled "What's Rattlin' On The Moon?", referring to Ratledge and to MoonJune. It includes three tracks that Beppe Crovella wrote and recorded right after he had decided to do the project. It also has ten Ratledge compositions that got the experimental, spacy jazz-rock Beppe Crovella treatment, plus three more tracks that Beppe did after he had done the ten Ratledge pieces.
Beppe Crovelle is a superb musician and his compositions fit the album nicely.
In all, this is a great tribute: fine artwork, excellent concept and brilliant music.
Recommended listening.

ZAPPATIKA AT THE NEXT ZAPPANALE
Here's Zappatika!
UniMuta: Hard to imagine that the readers of United Mutations do not know who Zappatika is, but could you introduce yourself / the band?
mcinnes / Zappatika: i am Mcinnes, a sort of British musician....i moved to europe in 96 to 'expand horizons' and found myself (surprise, surprise) in Amsterdam......our drummer ,Batta-Tutti, and i started out together in another band back then (97-98), called Purple Void, but after a while realised that we were both pushing things to a very 'zappa-esque' edge which some of the other members of PV didn't really like/couldn't really get into......
and at that time, (2002) after Purple Void split, we decided to start our "dream" project whereby we would play only our own music (no matter how obscure or tricky it might be written) and of course, our favourite Zappa numbers and try to create a damn fine 21st century extremely alternative band with no clear genre or industry-influenced boundaries....a band where 'anything is possible'
The original line up was sketchy and temporary to say the least, but then ,over time and trials, we found the right muso's for the gig (Zomby Woof,Bongo Fury,The Kid) who added the right ingredients to start baking the perfect Z-cake !
This gradual organic development continue to this day and we have just become a 7-headed monster with an additional (3rd) guitarist, Daddo, and a very talented violinist.(K)..whom i believe your informed readers will know very well !
UniMuta: So you're headlining Zappanale on Saturday! Performing at midnight. How do you feel about that?
mcinnes / Zappatika: Can i swear ? ...yea, well fucking amazing is the only thing i can say. When Thomas called and asked if we would play some of our own music too ,it really blew me away. I spend half my life plugged into a recording consol ,and writing ....so when you get asked to perform some of that at a gig like Zappanale it is ....well,quite humbling.
We would have been happy to play the Carpark on Monday morning...but Saturday nite Midnite is a bit of a dream come true really. We promise EVERY person in the place that we will do whatever we can to make it a fine, funny and memorable show !
UniMuta: Will the fact that you'll be playing at midnight have an effect on the setlist? And will the addition of a violin and an extra guitar turn Zappatika into a jam band?
mcinnes / Zappatika: Well we will be on stage for a long.....long set (nearly 2 hours) and we will cover LOTS of stuff ranging from many "sing-a-long-a-Zappa" favourites to our own little ditties and also, for the first time live on stage, some of the "blended' FZ / Zappatika stunt-guitar-dance-rock stuff on our Dodo album...we are now working hard on the new 7-piece arrangements ,which is all going extremely well, and the sound at Zappanale will just be massive....
the show starts at midnite so we will probabaly be pretty well stimulated and, shall we say, uninhibited ,by then.....and honestly.........we have no idea what may happen !
UniMuta: Listening to Zappatika originals, I can tell that you're not only in to Frank Zappa & The Mothers. Who are your main musical influences?
mcinnes / Zappatika: my first big influence was actually Bolan, the Electric Warrior album turned me on to electric guitar at the age of 10...it was a masterpiece for its time and i still listen to it even now....also Alex Harvey ,Bowie and Alice Cooper had a strong 'emotional' influence on my eventual attempts to write stuff.....as a guitarist i was Jimi's as a teenager and FZ was a kind of vague spectre .....when i was 17, i sat through Live in NY and Overnight Sensation ...........since then.....well i dont need to tell you...
UniMuta: Looking at the future, how do you see Zappatika evolving the next couple of years?
mcinnes / Zappatika: there are lots of plans in the mix....we will release the Strictly Frankly DVD Tribute (100 % FZ material) sometime this year...working on that now.....might be ready for Zappanale, and we are in negotiation with some really interesting countries (like Latvia ,Hungary and Romania) about festivals and shows...we will probably keep doing short tours in North Europe where possible ,but we have been very busy the last 2 years so we are starting 2010 in a relaxed way, just working on the new material and working the new players in....we will be back out on stage toward the Summer....also there is a vague plan forming about doing something in the US in 2011...but we will have to see about that.....apart from that The Kid (Bassist) and i just cut the first parts on some stuff for the next studio album....
UniMuta: Zappanale will have another great line-up. Are there bands that you really want to see?
mcinnes / Zappatika: well, Ray White is one of our heroes ,so it would be gret if he makes it ! Of course, JL Ponty is an interesting one...and it would be nice to hear Bobby Martin on one or two FZ classics ........but i think probably EVERY band who has been booked will be great -actually Lilo played with us at our Acoustic FZ set in Paris in '08, (there is a video of that somewhere online) he is a cool guy and a good player....
i guess, right now, we are just looking forward to being a part of it.
UniMuta: I, for one, am really looking forward to the Zappatika concert.
Thanks for your time & see you at Zappanale!
mcinnes / Zappatika: thanks for your support man, and your great site
we, for 7, are looking forward to it too- see you there !
cheers
-zap mcinnes

GREG RUSSO AND CROSSFIRE PUBLICATIONS
This week, the first 6 of 32 download-only albums taken from Paul Buff’s recordings made at Pal Studios and Original Sound Studios will be available at CDBaby.com.
iTunes and all the other companies will get these albums soon.
Note the stereo mix of “Grunion Run” on the stereo edition of “Drums A-Go-Go” which is being released for the first time. Besides all three mixes of “Grunion Run,” FZ appears on Brian Lord & The Midnighters’ “The Big Surfer” (which of course he wrote!).
Read on!!
Click on album titles for tracklists.
THE BONGO TEENS & PRESTON EPPS - SURFIN' BONGOS
- the bongo teens & preston epps: surfin' bongos
(2010, download, -, crossfire publications)
Laboe's idea was to combine three tracks from Preston Epps (of "Bongo Rock" fame) with whatever Paul Buff could come up with. Including Preston Epps' #14 hit "Bongo Rock" and his #78 hit "Bongo Bongo Bongo," "Surfin' Bongos" was completed that summer and was originally issued by Original Sound in September 1963.
March 2010 sees the first official reissue of that album from the original mono and stereo album masters, along with many rarities and unreleased tracks drawn from master tapes and acetates. In addition, The Bongo Teens' version of "Bustin' Surfboards" (originally by The Tornadoes) was featured in the film "Aloha Summer."
The 2010 edition is a download only release and is available in separate MONO and STEREO editions with the same bonus tracks.
As part of the bonus rarities of the 2010 re-release, both sides of The Rotations' single ("Heavies"/ "The Cruncher") and the Brian Lord & The Midnighters single ("The Big Surfer"/ "Not Another One!") are included along with extremely rare tracks ("Baja Rhythm" and "La Gran Ola") that were only released in Mexico. "The Big Surfer" was written by Frank Zappa, who played guitar and portrayed a surfer on the track.
THE HOLLYWOOD PERSUADERS - DRUMS A-GO-GO
- the hollywood persuaders: drums a-go-go
(2010, download, -, crossfire publications)
When Paul Buff came up with a Mexican-sounding instrumental entitled "Tijuana Surf" at his Pal Studios in Cucamonga, California, he asked fellow Pal musician Frank Zappa to write a B-side. Zappa turned in the brilliant, fuzz-toned instrumental "Grunion Run," and Buff sold the recordings to Art Laboe's Original Sound label. The Hollywood Persuaders became Buff's performing name, but they were not a band! With very few exceptions, Paul Buff would play all the instruments.
When Original Sound released "Tijuana" in the summer of 1963, the record became a big regional success. In fact, the record was released twice: as "Tijuana Surf" by The Persuaders, and as "Tijuana" by The Hollywood Persuaders. "Tijuana" was released in Mexico and Argentina as by Los Persuaders and went on to spend 16 weeks at #1 in Mexico - even preventing The Beatles' "I Want To Hold Your Hand" from reaching the top spot!
The success of "Tijuana" enabled Buff to create more Hollywood Persuaders recordings, and back royalties from the record also helped bail Frank Zappa out of jail after he was arrested in March 1965!
The following single "Persuasion"/ "Juarez" did not stir up the same kind of sales as "Tijuana", but Paul Buff was working on an idea which showcased drums in the arrangement. Buff's first attempt was entitled "Drums" and simply featured drums with his wife Allison's backing vocals. This version was released on an extremely rare promotional single with "Yes, I Want To Dance" as the B-side. Paul Buff went back and completely re-recorded the track with an extremely powerful drum presence, more instrumentation and a sax replacing Allison Buff's vocal. This version became "Drums A-Go-Go," and it was an even bigger local success. It also just missed hitting Billboard's single chart, but it generated even more attention through cover versions by the likes of Sandy Nelson and Hal Blaine. The flipside of "Drums A-Go-Go" was "Agua Caliente (Hot Water)," another Mexican-styled instrumental. The belated Mexican success of "Tijuana" led to the release of a unique LP containing tracks from The Hollywood Persuaders, The Rotations and The Teen Beats. "Drums A-Go-Go" has become The Hollywood Persuaders' most recognizable song, and it was also included in the film "Natural Born Killers."
In the late spring of 1965, Art Laboe of Original Sound gave Paul Buff the go-ahead to do a "Drums A-Go-Go" album. It was released in August 1965. Aside from the title track and a new mix of "Tijuana," the album included reworkings of "Persuasion" as well as The Bongo Teens' tracks "Last Night" and "Forget It." Buff did some more recordings by himself and called in fellow Original Sound artist Adam Saylor's backing band (Brian Blanchard, Bob Husband and Mike Martin) to do the tracks "Eve Of Destruction," "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" and "Hollywood A-Go-Go." The third song by this lineup was backed by the first song for The Hollywood Persuaders' final single.
Paul Buff went on to do the Original Sound-released solo single "She's Got A 60 Cycle Brain"/ "Cause I Love You" and many tracks with Allison Buff as The Buff Organization. These tracks are available as part of Paul Buff's 20-volume Pal Studio/ Original Sound series. Buff also engineered many recordings by other artists at Original Sound Studios, including The Music Machine, The Strawberry Alarm Clock and Sugarloaf, to name just three.
This brand-new download-only release presents the original 1965 album, plus 5 bonus tracks. And the entire album is available in seperate mono and stereo editions.

MIKE JOHNSON - WHAT WOULD YOU DO
- mike johnson: what would you do
(2002, cd, usa, up records)
"What Would You Do" is the fourth album by singer / songwriter Mike Johnson.
My attention was caught, because Stanley Jason Zappa plays tenor sax on this album.
Unfortunately, Stanley's input was minimal. He had to blow some background chords together with Max Shue (on trumpet).
Don't get me wrong, "What Would You Do" is an excellent album, but I had hoped for some nice jazz soloing or for some bebop notes...
Now THAT would have raised some eyebrows...

MYTH-SCIENCE - LOVE IN OUTER SPACE
- myth-science: love in outer space
(1995, cd, usa, knitting factory works kfw 183)
from the liner notes, by Reuben Radding:
"My forming a band of my own to play nothing but Sun Ra's tunes came about for the reason that I couldn't just pick one or two of his songs to play! I hate tribute bands. I would never have wanted to ape the Sun Ra Arkestra and wear costumes and chant, and dance. It would feel exploitive and disrespectful, like wearing blackface. Besides, as Steve Lacy has said, "Musicians want to play the way they want to play." I wanted the guys to feel like they could play like themselves and not be bound to imitating the Arkestra. After all, what made (and makes) the Arkestra a great band is the collection of strong personalities.
Why shouldn't we present ours?"
The result is beautiful. Myth-Science takes a fine series of Arkestra classics and treats them as jazz standards. 'Discipline', 'Love In Outer Space', 'Kingdom Of Not', 'Springtime In Chicago', ...
I love it.
You get the familiar sounding, swinging melody lines, and some out-of-this-world improvisations on top. Just beautiful. And hard to imagine that Myth-Science can create this sound with just two saxes, an organ, drums and a double bass...
GERONIMO BLACK - WELCOME BACK GERONIMO BLACK (REVISED)
- geronimo black: welcome back geronimo black (revised)
(2010, download, -, crossfire publications)
Greg Russo has been busy. Not only did he finish the Paul Buff Cucamonga series, he also revamped three albums that Crossfire released previously in 2008.
Next to Bunk Gardner's "It's All Bunk" and Jimmy Carl Black "Where's My Waitress?", he also remasted one of my favorite albums: Geronimo Black's "Welcome Back".
Recommended!

BUNK GARDNER - IT'S ALL BUNK! (RELOADED)
- bunk gardner: it's all bunk! (reloaded)
(2010, download, -, crossfire publications)
"It's All Bunk!" was made available (as a download-only album) in 2008.
Greg Russo has remastered and revised the album, and this new version is available from CDBaby at this very moment.
"This freshly remastered collection spans 1959 to 1981, including three tracks that have never appeared in digital form. Regardless of whether he's playing big band jazz, melodic instrumentals, experimental works or solo flute (all represented on "It's All Bunk!"), Bunk Gardner always makes it interesting."The album also includes a lot of pieces of the 1959 Bud Wattles album, Bunk's first album appearance.

VINYL IS NOT DEAD - IT JUST SMELLS FUNNY
"I’m going to write my third book about Zappa records. While the first two have been dealing with Zappa bootlegs, the new project shall mainly deal with the official singles of Frank Zappa.
The working title is “Vinyl is not dead - it just smells funny, Volume 1: The Singles”. This book will be - similar to “You Can’t Do That On Bootz Anymore Volume 1 and 2” - a private release and most probably and due to the nowadays only limited request on Zappa books a low numbered edition. A book made from a collector for fans and collectors."
If you're a 7" vinyl fetishist, this might just be the thing for you.
Dieter is still looking for pictures or scans of rare singles, so if you think that you might be able to help him out, drop me a line and I'll forward the message.

WILLY'S WEEKLY CHOICE
Here's a live snippet to give you an idea:
Vijay Iyer: piano
Stephan Crump: bass
Marcus Gilmore: drums
Rudresh Mahanthappa: alto saxophone
R.I.P. HERB COHEN
After beginning his professional career as an L.A. club booker and operator, Cohen branched into management in the mid-'60s. His biggest clients were Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention, the outre band that became a top attraction in venues on the Sunset Strip.
After the Mothers released their initial albums on Verve, Cohen and Zappa established their own imprints, Straight, Bizarre and Discreet. The labels issued material by the Mothers and such off-the-wall, Zappa-produced L.A. acts as Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band, groupie unit the G.T.O.'s and itinerant songsmith Wild Man Fischer, as well as singer-songwriter Tim Buckley, hard rock unit Alice Cooper and comic Lenny Bruce. The partners' association collapsed amid an exchange of lawsuits in 1976.
Cohen also handled beat-styled singer-songwriter Waits, who secured a contract with David Geffen's Asylum Records in 1972.
THAT PETROL EMOTION - CELLOPHANE
- that petrol emotion: cellophane
(1988, cd5", uk, virgin vscd 1116)
Adding all the pictures of the old Beefheart singles made me pick out another related item. Just to keep the equilibrium.
Here's That Petrol Emotion's "Cellophane" single from 1988. It also included their version of Don Van Vliet's 'Hot Head'. It's the track that they also contributed to the "Fast 'N' Bulbous" Beefheart tribute album.
RAYMOND SCOTT
http://scottdoc.com/
For those of you who don't know who Raymond Scott is, here's a fine quote from Andy Partridge:
"What can you say about a man who inspired cartoon melodies and bebop, invented Frank Zappa and electronic music, and still found time to work for-Motown?"
- Andy Partridge, songwriter & leader of XTC
JIMMY CARL BLACK - "WHERE'S MY WAITRESS" (REVISED)
- jimmy carl black: "where's my waitress?" (revised)
(2010, download, -, crossfire publications)
About two years ago, Greg Russo's Crossfire Publications released "Where's My Waitress?", a Jimmy Carl Black approved compilation of songs that Jimmy Carl Black contributed to.
Recently, the album got remastered and one track got replaced. The new track is the Jimmy Carl Black / Tom Leavey penned 'Dead Lead'. It's the last song that Jimmy Carl wrote.
the liner notes:
"If you want to hear really hard-to-find and excellent recordings by Jimmy Carl Black, you've come to the right place. Two very rare tracks by Black Olive (Jimmy Carl Black and Sandro Oliva) join other prime rarities like the 1976 Lo Boys single "Play Your Music"/ "Funny Money" to create a fascinating glimpse of Jimmy's career after The Mothers Of Invention. This remastered edition includes the last song that Jimmy Carl Black wrote, "Dead Lead," as recorded by co-writer and former Geronimo Black/ Lo Boys bassist Tom Leavey."
Crossfire Publications has done another excellent job.
Available (download only) from CDBaby.

In a few days -- I will be on a short run with my occasional trio
Come on out and check out our often odd, but weirdly soothing mix of rock, pop, electronics and guitar instrumentals.
This run concludes with and is inspired by the Second in a series of benefits for my other half - Cheri Jiosne. Many of you know she has been VALIANTLY fighting breast cancer -- and you have helped us out over the last several months and we really appreciate that more than words can convey.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR KIND SUPPORT, POSITIVE ENERGY and CONCERN!!!
The fight continues -- but the good news is-- her new treatment protocol since Nov 2009 is working well -- we are seeing significant shrinking of the tumor, and new cancer growth that was showing up in oct/nov is now gone!! Recent blood tests have also been great. More info on what she's doing : www.burzynskimovie.com
So we continue on the same regimen, working towards the next three-month checkup. I continue to work overtime and to reach out to friends and family for any help they can offer, since our small amount of insurance ran out long ago.
Stand by -- I have two major tour announcements I am proud to be a part of, I'll be very busy for the next 6-8 weeks.....in the USA, Canada ( a tiny bit), and Europe........

ST.PATRICK'S DAY
The cultural legacy of Laurdine “Pat’’ Patrick, who died of leukemia in 1991, is like gold for music historians, said officials at the Berklee College of Music, who announced yesterday that they have received a vast collection of the musician’s archives as a gift from his son, Governor Deval Patrick.
...
Pat Patrick was best known for his 40-year association with band leader and composer Sun Ra, whom he accompanied on overseas tours and collaborated with on albums. Patrick also played with jazz greats such as Duke Ellington, John Coltrane, and Thelonious Monk.

PHONOMETAK 07
- various artists: phonometak series 7: on fillmore / pupillo, kazuhisa, yasuhiro
(2010, 10", italy , wallace records 123)
On Fillmore makes a good impression with ‘Fever Dream’, a psychedelic, exotic soundscape for which the title fits perfectly. Bass player Darin Gray and drummer Glenn Kotche aren’t afraid to experiment.
http://www.myspace.com/onfillmore
The Pupillo, Kazuhisa, Yasuhiro setting takes it a bit further and goes for a free form exercise. Their ‘In the Realm Of The Hungry Ghosts’ was recorded live at the Copenhagen Jazz Festival in 2008 and the guitar / bass / drums trio performs an experimental rock composition.
Impressive.

ROLLERBALL - TWO FEATHERS
- rollerball: two feathers
(2010, cdr-promo, usa , north pole records)
The band has been around for fifteen years, has released fourteen albums and has toured Europe five times. Rollerball’s music is defined as a mixture of experimental / progressive rock with gothic and jazzy undertones.
Reason enough to give this a closer listen.
The first thing that makes “Two Feathers” stand out, is the exceptional artwork. The album cover is a nice, plain fold-out cardboard sleeve, but the graphics are fascinating. It’s sort of a collage of artwork of ancient cultures.
And then there’s the font. I’ve never seen anything like it. It looks like some sort of hieroglyphic or arabic writing, but after a closer look, it's just weird letters, so I was able to read it. Very nice.
It made me even more curious about the music.
The first notes of “Two Feathers” set the tone: dark, melancholic jazz. Against this slow and groovy background, Mae Starr’s voice is a powerful addition. It has an almost hypnotic effect, dragging you into the world of Rollerball.
I’ve played the album a couple of times in a row, and I can only say that it’s good. It’s really good.
Rollerball’s music is difficult to define, and yet, it has a very recognizable, distinctive sound.

PHONOMETAK 06
- various artists: phonometak series 6: miss massive snowflake / gianni gebbia
(2010, 10", italy, wallace records)
Side A is reserved for avant-garde / experimental saxophone player (but also oil-painter and zen-buddhist) Gianni Gebbia. On 6 tracks, he improvises and experiments with all the sounds a saxophone can make. It’s a wild, impressive ride…
http://www.myspace.com/giannigebbia
http://giannigebbia.blogspot.com/
Side B hosts Miss Massive Snowflake with three sweet short pop songs. Well, they’re not really pop songs in the commercial meaning of the word, but you’ll catch my drift.
They’re short, funny, melodic, and do have vocals. I might as well call it pop songs.
I like this.
