NANCY - HOW DOES THAT GRAB YOU DARLIN ?

  • Nancy: How Does That Grab You Darlin?
        (1997, cd, Belgium, RCA)
Belgian pop band Nancy featured Hans Van Rompaey, Ief De Schepper, Mark Schrooten and Stefan Van Rompaey.
They released one album. Later they would change their name to Kamino.

"How Does That Grab You Darlin?" got produced by Peter Vermeersch and Pierre Vervloesem and featured Bart Maris, Peter Vandenberghe and Peter Vermeersch as guests.

I had never heard of Nancy, but I stumbled upon a copy last week.

JOSSE DE PAUW

  • josse de pauw, peter vermeersch, pierre vervloesem: weg
        (1998, cd, belgium, viakra)
Actor Josse De Pauw teamed up with Peter Vermeersch and Pierre Vervloesem to perform "Weg" in 1998.
The album got released on the Viakra label in 1998 and got re-released in 2010 on the Off Records label with different artwork.
Highly recommended, but you need to understand the Flemish language.

Josse has a great voice. When he starts talking, you listen. And for some reason, it merges beautifully with music.
Here's Josse with the Corrie van Binsbergen Band, from 2006.

FLAT EARTH SOCIETY - BOGGAMASTA III

The Flat Society Orchestra is a Belgian big band.
Think Tetzepi, or LeBocal, or the Ed Palermo Big Band, and add a Belgian flavour.

Last year, Flat Earth Society's "Boggamasta III" got released on vinyl on the Igloo Records label.
Fine album.

Last week, I came across a promotional CD copy of the same album.
So why Igloo didn't release the album on CD is a bit of a mystery to me. If they took the effort to print CD's as promotional items, why not make these available as a regular release?

Still, a very fine album.
Give it a listen.

PETER VERMEERSCH - CHARMS

Flat Earth Society is performing in Los Angeles and in San Francisco, and I'm listening to "Charms".

Writings by Daniil Charms, translated into Dutch by Jo Govaerts and by Arthur Langeveld, and put on music by Peter Vermeersch, "Charms" got produced by the Walpurgis music theatre in 1998 !
Very nice.
Added the data to the United Mutations Archives.

FLAT EARTH SOCIETY - UNTITLED #0

Last week, Flat Earth Society presented their latest album, "Untitled #0", performing concerts in Ghent and in Antwerp.
I attended their Antwerp show at 'De Singel' and went home quite happy after enjoying a fine concert (and with the new album in my pocket).

"Untitled #0" is what you expect from a band like FES. Two discs: one labeled "1", the other one "A"; and compositions with titles like 'Graveyard Scuba', 'Chrimatistikology' and 'Swatter Perspective'.
Most of the pieces were written by band leader and bass clarinet player Peter Vermeersch. Three pieces are by piano and keyboard player Peter Vandenberghe. And then there's the reworked / rearranged version of Gershin's 'Summertime'.

After Flat Earth Society's "Terms Of Embarrassment" / Zappa tribute album and the Boggamasta adventure, "Untitled #0" has them move back to the more jazzy corner. Quirky and funny. Plus some great solos (Peter Delannoye on the trombone !! Wow !!)

Love it !!

This avant-garde rock band only released one album. In 1994. "Ornithozozy".

FLAT EARTH SOCIETY - BOGGAMASTA

I saw Flat Earth Society in concert a little while ago. At 'De Roma' in Antwerp. It was one of the "Boggamasta" album-release-concerts.
I had seen them performing "Boggamasta" earlier this year (in Wilrijk if my memory serves me right) and for one reason or another, I wasn't convinced at the time. It was a fine concert, but I felt like I was missing something.
At 'De Roma', however, they had me on their rollercoaster from the first song on.
Maybe because I didn't (have to) use my earplugs ? Maybe because I heard it for the second time ? Maybe because the overall sound was better (and I could actually hear the rhythm secion) ?

"Boggamasta" is a project by David Bovée and Peter Vermeersch.
David Bovée played the guitar in the earlier FES-years but quit Flat Earth Society to tour the world with Think Of One.
And now he's back for a one-time project, "Boggamasta".
About half of the pieces were written by Peter Vermeersch. The other half by David Bovée, but all of the compositions mix Flat Earth Society's signature rhythms with world music elements.
Add some weird vocal effects and you get "Boggamasta".

The album sounds great. (Use headphones !! Dive into it !! )
Beautiful melodies, great rhythms...
Hints of a Zappa horn section, the Residents, Snakefinger, but also of Mulate Astatke.
This is modern jazz. Amazing.

Out on vinyl (with a selection of songs on the vinyl + a download code for the complete album),
and on CD.

MAGNUS - THE BODY GAVE YOU EVERYTHING

Belgian duo Magnus consists of CJ Bolland and Tom Barman.
(Tom Barman = dEUS, = Barman / Van Nueten, = TaxiWars)
Magnus is some sort of dance music project.
This first album, however, might be classified as some sort of rock album with dance beats.

It has been entered into the United Mutations Archives because it features Peter Vermeersch, Mauro Pawlowski and Tim Vanhamel.
