ALLAN HOLDSWORTH

Borrowed from Facebook

A MESSAGE FROM STEVE VAI ON THE UPCOMING RELEASE OF THE COMPLETE YOSHI’S SHOWS:

“It’s an incredible honor for me to be involved with Eric Dorris, Chad Wackerman, Jimmy Haslip, Alan Pasqua, Manning Bartlett, and the Holdsworth Estate in bringing you all four historic performances of Allan and the band recorded at Yoshi’s in Oakland in 2006. Anything Allan-related that finds its way back into the light feels like a gift to all of us who have been inspired, bewildered, and joyfully humbled by his music over the years. These shows capture a truly special moment, and we’re thrilled to finally help make them available in a way that does them justice.” “We’re aiming for an early summer release and are carefully assembling two packages that will include high-resolution Blu-ray discs, CDs, and vinyl of the performances. In other words, plenty of ways to experience Allan’s brilliance—whether you prefer watching it, listening to it, or placing a lovingly pressed piece of vinyl on the turntable and letting the magic unfold. It’s been a real pleasure working with everyone involved in preserving and presenting this music, and I’m deeply grateful to be part of helping bring these remarkable performances back to the fans who appreciate Allan’s artistry as much as I do.”

“Stay tuned—there’s some beautiful Holdsworth energy on the way.”

Sincerely, Steve Vai

A MESSAGE FROM PRODUCER ERIC DORRIS
“We are currently in the approval stage of the packaging, artwork, authoring, etc. We are hoping to announce a release date in a few weeks, and it is looking like the release will happen sometime in June. I will send out the exact date as soon as I know it, and we will start taking pre-orders at that time. I know it's been hard to be patient, but this will definitely be worth it!”
Eric Dorris

ALLAN HOLDSWORTH - I. O. U. LIVE

  • Allan Holdsworth: I.O.U. Live
        (1997, cd, --, outer music)

Filling gaps in the Allan Holdsworth discography...
Released in 1997, "I. O. U. Live" was actually recorded in concert in Japan in 1984. It presented pieces from the "I. O. U.", "Road Games", and "Metal Fatigue" albums.

In 2018, "I. O. U. Live" would get re-released as a CD / DVD package called "Live In Japan 1984" by the Manifesto record label.

Allan Holdsworth on (breathtaking) guitar, Chad Wackerman on drums, Jimmy Johnson on bass, and Paul Williams on vocals.
Personally, I'm more in favor of the instrumental stuff, but this is a great album.
If you have the choice, go for the Manifesto release (with the DVD !!).

SOFT WORKS - ABRACADABRA IN OSAKA

  • Soft Works: Abracadabra In Osaka
        (2020, 2cd, --, moonjune records)
Discogs:
Soft Works was a first attempt to resurrect the legendary band Soft Machine, and was formed with ex-members of the band at the request of Leonardo Pavkovic for a Japanese tour in 2003. But soon, Allan Holdsworth would leave and history repeated itself when he was replaced by John Etheridge - who already replaced Holdsworth in Soft Machine in 1975 - and the band changed its name to Soft Machine Legacy.

Soft Works featured

  • Elton Dean
  • Allan Holdsworth
  • Hugh Hopper
  • John Marshall

and released "Abracadabra" in 2003.

Almost 20 years later, the MoonJune Records label released the recording of the 2003 Osaka concert.

Beautiful.

HOLDSWORTH, PASQUA, WACKERMAN & HASLIP - PROTO-COSMOS

  • holdsworth, pasqua, wackerman & haslip: proto-cosmos
        (2022, cd, usa,blue canoe records)
Taken from the same 2007 concerts (at Yoshi's) that resulted in "Blues For Tony" and "Live At Yoshi's", this beautiful "Proto-Cosmos" disc features Allan Holdsworth, Alan Pasqua, Chad Wackerman and Jimmy Haslip in top shape.

A posthumous release? A tribute?
All I can say is that this is an incredible album and that I'm very glad that Chad brought some copies to Zappanale with him.

Here's the opening track :

ALLAN HOLDSWORTH - TALES FROM THE VAULT

  • Allan Holdsworth: Tales From The Vault
        (2018, cd promo, --, pledgemusic)
Made available in 2016 as a digital download for contributors to Allan Holdsworth’s “Tales From The Vault” Pledgemusic project, the recordings eventually got released on CD in 2018 (for Pledgemusic contributors only).
As it turned out, Leonardo (MoonJune) had some copies left. He found them during his recent move from NYC to Spain...

‘Tokyo Dream‘, ‘Three Sheets to the Wind’, and ‘Material Real’ were mixed by Mark Pinske.

From the liner notes in the CD booklet:

The Mark Pinske Mixes : During this time, I met Frank Zappa, who was very kind to me. I told him my story about the WB problems (I don’t think he was a fan of WB either) and he very generously offered to let me use his amazing studio. He said go get a couple of 24 track tapes from WB which I did. I had to sneak them out as they were vaulted but I managed to get a couple of reels out.
I took them over to Frank’s house and he introduced me to his engineer Mark Pinske. He mixed 3 tracks in one evening.

ALLAN HOLDSWORTH & MANIFESTO

In my opinion, the Manifesto record label is doing a fine job releasing Allan Holdsworth concerts on CD/DVD combined sets.

The latest additions to the United Mutations Archives are "Warsaw Summer Jazz Days '98" and "Frankfurt '86".

"Warsaw Summer Jazz Days '98" featured Holdsworth / Carpenter / Novak. It was the 2nd Manifosto - Holdsworth release.
"Frankfurt '86" featured Holdsworth / Johnson / Husband / Akagi. It was the 3rd Manifesto-Holdsworth release.
Earlier this year, "Leverkusen '97" got released. Next up is "Leverkusen 2010".
