CELLETI / ROEDELIUS - SUSTANZA DI COSE SPERATA

Alessandra Celletti and Hans-Joachim Foedelius met online at a social network. Roedelius invited Celletti to participate in the "More Ohr Less" festival in 2007, and they have been working together ever since.

The result of their collaboration is entitled "Sustanza Di Cose Sperata", which should translate into something as "The Essence Of Hope", or "The Essence Of Desired Things".
It's a beautiful, lyrical piano album: an impressiv soundtrack of floating melodies.

Here's a YouTube clip of the first track:

Out on the Transparency label.

CHERYL HARDWICK & BOB CRANSHAW

Thanks to Jan van Kemenade, I was able to add a bit of extra info on Cheryl Hardwick and Bob Cranshaw.

Not only did both of them play with Zappa when he was performing at Saturday Night Live, they're both linked to Sesame Street as well...

NEW ZAPPA BOOTLEG

There's a new bootleg out on the Guitar Master label. It presents a recording of the 1974/11/23 Michigan concert.

DOMENICO SOLAZZO'S PANOPTICON

from the PaNoPTiCoN website:
"PaNoPTiCoN is Domenico Solazzo's most ambitious project.
The idea emerged while he was recording his multi collaborative album "Multiply" in 2006.
PaNoPTiCoN is not a band, so to speak. It's more like a collective of musicians who are open and ready to dive into the most mystical forms of electric jazz improvisation, not unlike the first Weather Report recordings, Herbie Hancock's "Crossings" or Miles Davis' "In A Silent Way".

Though somehow obvious, it is quite a bet to make it happen on stage : no rehearsals are planned, never, and the line-up changes at every performance, which guarantees the spontaneity of the music played which represents quite a challenge for both the audience and the musicians themselves !

In true, PaNoPTiCoN cannot be described as a mere jamming band ; it's the reunion of people who are really willing to elevate themselves through communion in music."

The list of particpating artists is quite impressive. It includes Bart Maris and Michel Delville, just to name two.

Over at http://enterpanopticon.blogspot.com you can listen to an enormous number of PaNoPTiCoN concerts. I'm listening to "Cycle Phase Two" right now.

GLAUCO VENIER - GLAUCO VENIER SUONA FRANK ZAPPA

Italian composer, pianist and arranger Glauco Venier has performed Zappa tribute concerts on several occasions. He also performed at least once at one of the Italian Zappa Festivals that were organised by Debra Kadabra.

The above mentioned "Glauco Venier Suona Frank Zappa" got recorded in concert in Cavalicco (Udine), Italy, in 2005. It got released on the Music Center label in 2008.

The choice of compositions is rather impressive. It's not just Zappa's typical 'jazz' material, but it includes a couple of nice surprises as well.

  1. the grand wazoo
  2. blessed relief
  3. big swifty
  4. zoot allures
  5. dupree's paradise
  6. black napkins
  7. city of tiny lites
  8. for calvin
  9. hot plate heaven at the green hotel
  10. king kong
  11. zomby woof
  12. the orange county lumber truck

Glauco Venier's 10-piece jazz band does a great job. You get top musicians playing fine arrangements with enough room for some excellent improvisations.

Favourite pieces: Riccardo Chiarion's performance on 'Black Napkins' ; Claudo Venier / Yuri Goloubev / Luca Colussi on 'Zoot Allures' ; and the horn section in the Wazoo pieces...

This is superb. If you're into Ed Palermo's approach, you'll love this!

Essential listening.

THE PLASTIC PEOPLE OF THE UNIVERSE

Spanish label Munster Records will be releasing "Magical Nights", a retrospective / anthology album by The Plastic People Of The Universe.
The album will be available as a 3LP or 2CD set.

"The Plastic People of the Universe (PPU) are the definition on underground music. Formed in 1968 with bands like The Velvet Underground, Frank Zappa and The Fugs as references, they progressively shifted towards more experimental music forms. In 1976 they were jailed by the Czechoslovak communist regime solely because they dared to play their music for a bunch of long-haired fans, indirectly causing an immense political effect for the years to come. Our collection brings together their best tracks from nearly two decades."
