MUSIC ACROSS RADIO SHOW ZAPPANALE SPECIAL

The Music Across radio show will be doing another Zappanale special !

October 2, 2023
21h00
On radio ORANGE 94.0 in Vienna (Austria)

Internet Live Stream: http://o94.at (click on "Live Stream" (the green triangle)

Or listen afterwards to the archives:
http://cba.fro.at/series/music-across

From 13 to 16 July 2023, Zappanale #32 took place in Bad Doberan on the Baltic Sea. In the run-up to the festival, there was another "Zappa Plays for Bach" concert on 12 July in the main church of St. Katharinen in Hamburg, this time with Napoleon Murphy Brock and the Hamburg Jazz Trio.
"Music Across" was present at all the concerts and once again conducted numerous interviews with musicians.
This broadcast features the Bundespolizeiorchester Berlin and an interview with its director Gerd Herklotz. This orchestra opened the Warm-Up Party on 12 July in the tent at the festival site, and it was impressive to see how even a large classical orchestra with a wide-ranging programme was able to inspire the Zappa fans and bring them to frenetic applause. Also featured in this broadcast is French prog-rock band "Jack Dupon" including an interview with all 3 musicians, and the American Zappa cover band "Gozortenplat" with an interview with band leader Jon Liedke.

Future broadcasts about Zappanale 2023 will include music and interviews with Billy Cobham, Zappa alumni Chad Wackerman and Ray White (Banned from Utopia), as well as Paul Green (Paul Green Rock Academy), Conrad St. Clair (The Furious Bongos), Fred Händl (The All New Frankly Don't Wop Duo), Lutz Streun & Nico Stallmann (Bobby Rausch), Robbie Mangano and Jamie Kime (Banned from Utopia) and Serhii Radzetskyi & Dimytro Radzetskyi (Shor Band).

In the field, on the microphone, sound engineering & production: Gernot Friedbacher.

A RESIDENTS UPDATE

From the latest newsletter :

Meanwhile, the group are preparing a live album, as recorded at their SECRET SHOW in San Francisco back in January. It'll be called 'Documentary Evidence', and if all goes to plan there'll be a 2LP version and a CD/DVD set. Due as close to the first anniversary of the show as we can manage - watch the skies!

The group are also hard at work on pREServed editions of 'Demons Dance Alone' and 'Animal Lover' as we speak. The latter has proved so complicated that Renaldo Malpractice had been drafted in to help them remember it all and figure the whole thing out - that album went through more stages and evolutions than any album has the right to do. But fortunately Renaldo hasn't (yet) taken nearly as many mind-altering drugs as The Residents, and is thus able to remember more than a couple of weeks into the past.

You may have heard too that Klanggalerie are about to help The Residents realise a long-held ambition and release a complete 'Sam's Enchanted Evening' show to accompany their recent 'So Long Sam' set. One way or another that whole project came and went without the group properly documenting it, although it was all recorded at the time. You can find out everything you need to know on that one at klanggalerie.com.

Our friends at Psychofon are also currently putting the finishing touches to their set of Classic Series vinyl reissues too, featuring the usual stunning array of mind-bending collectables. And everybody knows The Residents do so LOVE a mind-bending collectable. You can check it all out psychofonrecords.com.

THE Z3 - FILIBUSTER FOR FRANK

  • the z3: filibuster for frank
        (2023, cd, usa, private release)
Releasing an album on CD, next to a more standard digital Bandcamp release, is quite an exercise.
I guess it's only worth the effort if you have a tour or a series of concerts scheduled where you want to be able to sell the album to the audience.

"Filibuster For Frank", the third album by The Z3 did get a CD release. Eventually, that is.
But I'm glad as this is indeed an album of which I need a physical copy nearby.

Twenty tracks on "Filibuster For Frank" and most of them (if not all) refer to the music of FZ.
  1. Be Kind, Please Rewind
    - incl. reference to Joe’s Garage
  2. Well That Was Quite An Experience
    - incl. reference to Hungry Freaks, Daddy
  3. Breezin’ With Beau
  4. Bow Tie Daddy
    - incl. reference to Hungry Freaks, Daddy
  5. Stink-Foot
  6. Spun Kids In The Stairwell
  7. Spirit Quest On The Bus
    - incl. reference to Fembot In A Wet T-Shirt & Toad-O-Line
  8. Excentrifugal Forz
  9. Dumb All Over
  10. Is This What It’s S’posta Do?
  11. Make America Alright Alright Alright Again
  12. Dealing With It Back Here
  13. Vision Quest
    - incl. reference to I'm So Cute & Inca Roads
  14. Beer Filibuster

NEW MUSIC BY ROBBIE SEAHAG MANGANO

Robbie Seahag Mangano just released Glacier Bay;

Robbie added:
“Hi! I have an new interesting guitar composition for your ears. It is a peaceful song with a peculiar melody that features only two guitars. I hope you like it and it inspires you.
Thanks for continuing to support my music and work.
Thanks to Anthony Garone for supplying rhythm guitar and Daniel Winer for creating the artwork."

SANDRO OLIVA - 48 ROTOLI

Sandro Oliva has just released "48 Rotoli Di Bugie (Worst Of)".
It's a compilation that has been made available on Spotify, iTunes and Amazon.

Alternative versions of older tracks, plus a preview of what's to come the next months.

Mother-esque to say the least !!
(some of the pieces even feature The Grandmothers)

VOLKER KRIEGEL - MAINZ STUDIO RECORDINGS 1963-1969

  • volker kriegel: mainz studio recordings 1963-1969
        (2021, 2cd, Germany, jazz house)
In 2013, the Jazz House record label, in corporation with SWR, released Volker Kriegel's "Lost Tapes - Mainz 1963-1969", collecting the complete Mainz Studio recordings.

The album got remastered and re-released in 2021 with different artwork, presenting the same music.
The final track on this excellent 2 cd set is from the February 26, 1969 session, featuring Volker Kriegel on guitar, Fritz Hartschuh on vibes, Gustl Mayer on tenor sax, Hans Rettenbacher on bass and Peter Baumeister on drums, and it's an excellent version of Frank Zappa's 'Mother People'.

Here is the Dave Pike Set's version (with Volker Kriegel on guitar !)

PAULINE BUTCHER'S FREAK OUT BOOK WILL GET A CZECH VERSION

The Czech Frank Zappa Fan Club is preparing a Czech version of Pauline Butcher''s "Freak Out! My Life With Frank Zappa" book. Of the 2nd version that is.

The book will be presented to the general public at the Book Trade Fair in Havličkův Brod on the 7th of October.

There will also be a 'fan club version' of the book. That one should be ready one week later, at the (last) meeting of the Czech Frank Zappa Fan Club.
Both Zappaz & Pappaz and The Witch Orchestra are scheduled to perform at the meeting.

FRANK ZAPPA - FRANK ZAPPA'S COMPLETE HALLOWEEN

  • frank zappa: frank zappa's complete halloween
(2015, 4cd-bootleg, europe, original master series)
The "Frank Zappa's Complete Halloween" bootleg box set got released around 2015. It presented both the Early and the Late concerts that Zappa did at the Palladium in New York City on October 31, 1981.

Parts of these concerts have been released officially. Both audio and video. And they have been bootlegged quite a lot.
But the concert took place in 1981 and that's about the time that I started listening to FZ...

Produced by the same team that did the "Frank's Day Off" and the "Pop History" box sets. 4 CD jewel case box set in a slipcase. In excellent quality.

PIERRE VERVLOESEM - THE RETURN OF LET FANS PAY SOME MORE

  • pierre vervloesem: the return of let fans pay some more
        (2023, download / streaming, --, bandcamp)
On his Bandcamp page, Pierre added:
The return of very old drums boxes, dub basses and weird and beautiful melodies, yes, it's a new album and it's my sonic masterpiece. "March For Has-Been's Rights" is the masterpiece of my masterpiece.

I don't know if it's Pierre's ultimate sonic masterpiece, but I did enjoy the album a lot.
Check it out !

And for the music freaks, two of the pieces on the album quote Stravinsky.

FRANK ZAPPA - A GRANDE MÃE

  • César Figueiredo: Frank Zappa - A Grande Mãe
(1988, book, Portugal, fora de texto / centelha)
I recently got hold of "Frank Zappa - A Grande Mãe".

Volume 12 in the Portugese "Rock On" book collection was a Frank Zappa special. The series had kicked off with a Jim Morisson special and had continued with The Stones, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, etc.

Pocket-sized, 174 pages with a handful of black and white pictures.
The book discusses FZ's discography, the music that influenced FZ, the social aspects, the orchestra adventures, and more.

Here's the entry over at Avo's site :

ALL MY LOVING

"All My Loving", the documentary that got released on DVD in 2007, is being sold for ridiculously low prices all over the place.

'Groundbreaking 60's TV documentary finally makes it to DVD.
Acclaimed at the time of its original broadcast on the BBC in 1968 as 'a psychedelic experience which 10 years from now will be the definitive document of its time', it's only now that acclaimed documentary filmmaker Tony Palmer's landmark film on the social and cultural significance of the then-emerging pop culture is getting its first commercial release.
Very much a product of its time, All My Loving uses the then-contemporary arts documentary style with its rapid cutting juxtaposing interviews with Paul McCartney, Frank Zappa, Pete Townshend, Donovan, Eric Burdon and Jimi Hendrix with live, on the road and behind the scenes footage of the Beatles, Cream, Pink Floyd, the Who, Hendrix and, by way of a historic counterpoint, newsreel images of the Vietnam war.
Additionally, a supporting cast of miscellaneous music biz movers, shakers and personalities including Lulu, George Martin, Derek Taylor, Manfred Mann, Kit Lambert, Anthony Burgess, George Harrison's mum, and the Maharishi are all glimpsed, however, the film's most incisive comments come from Messrs Zappa and Burdon.
On top of the original 55-minute film the DVD's bonus features include an interview with Tony Palmer and a gallery of vintage Ralph Steadman cartoons.
All said, All My Loving survives as a fascinating historical artifact especially when viewed with the hindsight of the subsequent complete corporatisation of what was once considered the counter culture.' Grahame Bent (Record Collector)

FRANK ZAPPA - FRANK'S DAY OFF

  • frank zappa: frank's day off
        (2015, 4cd, --, original masters series)
Another bootleg album entered the UM Headquarters today.
"Frank's Day Off" presents the early and late shows of the 1980/04/29 shows at the Tower Theatre in Philadelphia.
No clue why this release was called "Frank's Day Off" or what triggered the artwork to be used...
The shows, however, and the recordings sound great.

Released as a 4 CD jewel case that comes in a slipcase.

In case you haven't heard these, recordings of both shows can also be downloaded for free from Zappateers !

DAAU

The first album by the DAAU (Die Anarchistische AbendUnterhaltung) is getting re-released.
Both on CD and on vinyl.

Originally released in 1995, this is an essential album from the Belgian nineties scene.

from discogs:
Belgian modern classical folk band formed in in 1992 in Antwerp. Started as a quartet of 4 classically trained musicians: Brothers Buni Lenski (violin), Simon Lenski (cello), Han Stubbe (clarinet) and Roel van Camp (accordion), later adding pianist and composer Adrian Lenski (the eldest brother of the Lenski family) and drummer Janek Kowalski. Renowned on the European festival and jazz circuits for their virtuoso live performances, their music fuses pop, eastern-european folk and classical music, with jazz and punk attitude.

DARKO THE SUPER

Weirdo rap superstar Darko The Super keeps spicing up his lyrics with Frank Zappa references.

        (2016, download / streaming, --, bandcamp)
“Creepazoid!” was a Fan Club Exclusive release by Darko The Super. It is available only to the people who subscribe to his releases.
BothTrack 6, ‘Sugar Plum Fairy’, and track 9, ‘Global Warming’ mention Frank Zappa in the lyrics.

Sugar Plum Fairy
Listen all, boys and girls
Lizard people of the world
I’m a rock in a sea of pearls
You’re plastic, clean and shiny
I’ll tell yah what you can kiss my high-knee
Frank Zappa is the greatest
Frank Zappa is my favorite

Global Warming

STEFAN HÜFNER'S "ZAPPATA" - - - PERFORMING THE MUSIC OF FRANK ZAPPA

Stefan Hüfner's "Zapata!" will be performed in Essen, Germany on Friday, January 12, 2024.

https://www.theater-essen.de/spielplan/a-z/zappata-134515/

  • Napoleon Murphy Brock: vocals, sax, flute
  • Mara Minjoli: vocals
  • Werner Neumann: guitar
  • Berthold Matschat: harmonica, keyboards
  • Mark Kielmann: trumpet
  • Thomas Käseberg: sax
  • Raphael Klemm: trombone
  • Max Schmitz: bass
  • Mickey Neher: drums
  • Stefan Hüfner: keyboards, arrangements, direction

The starting signal for "Stefan Huefner's ¡ZAPPATA!" was given in 2011, when they celebrated the American rock rebel Frank Zappa with several concerts at the NOW! festival. Stefan Hüfner, professor of pop composition at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen, had arranged several Zappa songs from the 70s and 80s for his ten-piece band. And they promptly received invitations to the big European Zappa festival "Zappanale" and to the Jazzfest Bonn.
Then there was a call from California. Long-time companion, saxophonist and singer of Frank Zappa and Grammy Award winner Napoleon Murphy Brock had heard the band's recordings. Since then, ¡ZAPPATA! has been playing with the famous The Mothers of Invention musician as a star guest - and of course at the start of the tour at the Philharmonie!

LES BOUCLES ABSURDES - L'HOMME QU'ON OUBLIAIT VITE

  • les boucles absurdes: l'homme qu'on oubliait vite
        (2023, download / streaming, --, bandcamp)
Yes ! A new album by Jean-Pierre Jonckheere's Les Boucles Absurdes.
Beautiful minimalistic musical creations.
And then there's the final (15-minute) track where Bruno Vansina and Pierre Vervloesem put some extra layers on 'J'entend le sable murmurer' (I hear the sand whispering).

The new album from Les Boucles Absurdes is a new adventure mixing field recordings, prepared piano, heavy re-recorded loops, treated acoustic instruments and more.
Jean-Pierre likes to call his music (in French) "Musique acousmaticomique" which gives you a good idea of his humour when composing and assembling his tracks.
All tracks, except "J'entend le sable murmurer" are originally octophonic tracks who were remixed to stéréo for the digital release.

This is great !!
I love it.

SNARKY PUPPY BAND MEMBERS DEBUT PROJECT

Zach Brock's 'Drawing Song', performed by Brock, Lanzetti, Ogawa.

J.M. SMIG - FISTO FUCK

J.M. Smig's "Fisto Fuck" is some sort of electronic disco excursion.
I'm more in favor of his contemporary up-tempo material, but you can check this one out at :

IDRIS ACKAMOOR & THE PYRAMIDS

Brand new Missing Persons studio album coming in November of this year!

THE FUSION SYNDICATE

The Fusion Syndicate got mentioned on Andrews www.zappanews.co.uk website last week.

It's a project by Billy Sherwood, who previously did a similar exercise with The Prog Collective: bringing  together musicians from the progressive rock, jazz rock and fusion scene to record his music.
So it's not really a band as such, because there are different musicians on every track, but it sure is a display of talented musicians.

Their first (eponymous) album got released in 2012 (and was made available on Bandcamp in 2017).

  • Bass Guitar – Billy Sheehan 3, Colin Edwin 2, Jimmy Haslip 1, Justin Chancellor 7, Percy Jones 5
  • Drums – Asaf Sirkis 7, Billy Cobham 2, Chad Wackerman 6, Chester Thompson 4, Gavin Harrison 3
  • Guitar – Steve Hillage 7
  • Keyboards – David Sancious 3, Derek Sherinian 4, Jordan Rudess 2, Rick Wakeman 1, Scott Kinsey 7, Tony Kaye 6
  • Lead Guitar – John Etheridge 6, Larry Coryell 4, Steve Morse 5, Steve Stevens 2
  • Piano – Jim Beard 5
  • Saxophone – Eric Marienthal 4, Jay Beckenstein 3, Mel Collins 2, Nik Turner 1, Theo Travis  7
  • Trumpet – Randy Brecker 5
  • Violin – Jerry Goodman 1

This year will have two new releases:

"A Speedway On Saturn's Rings"

  • Bass - Jah Wobble 1, Bootsy Collins 5, Alphonso Johnson 8
  • Drums - Chester Thompson 1, Carmine Appice 5
  • Guitar - Al Dimeola 1, Chris Poland 2, Fernando Perdomo 5, Jan Akkerman 6, Steve Stevens 8
  • Keyboard - Rick Wakeman 3
  • Sax - Angelo Moore 3, Didier Malherbe 7
  • Flute - Brian Jackson 5

and very soon "Beautiful Horizon".

NEKTAR

Next up in the series of re-issues is Nektar's 1974 album "Remember The Future".

A 4 CD & blu-ray box set with a variety of audio variations / remixes plus a concert recording.

Being unfamiliar with Nektar's output, I checked out YouTube for some samples and I was pleasantly surprised !

DOLBY ATMOS, DTS-HD MA 5.1 SURROUND SOUND AND HIGH-RES STEREO REMIXES

"Dolby Atmos, DTS-HD MA 5.1 Surround Sound and Hi-Res Stereo Remix" by Steven Wilson.
That's what it says for the 50th Anniversary edition of King Crimson's "Lark's Tongues In Aspic".

Dolby Atmos, DTS-HD MA 5.1 Surround Sound and Hi-Res Stereo Remixes...

With the Zappa re-release of "Over-Nite Sensation" of which the Blu-ray will contain "the album newly mixed in Dolby Atmos & 5.1, Zappa's original Quadraphonic mix, the 192/24 & 96/24 2012 stereo remaster", I'm guessing that this will be the new flow of releases that will be coming our way...

PIERRE VERVLOESEM - 2020 (2023 REMIX)

  • pierre vervloesem: 2020 (2023 remix)
        (2023, download / streaming, --, bandcamp)
Two years ago, in 2021, Pierre Vervloesem released "2020", a mind-boggling album.

Instrumental, guitar-oriented progressive rock with lots of rhythmic twists and turns.
Nothing new for Pierre, one might say, but "2020" is very 'in your face': short tracks, distorted guitars, displaying some sort of unexpected anger (or at least hyperactive energy level).

Earlier this month, Pierre remixed the album.
"2020" is now available as "2020" in the 2023 version.
Through Bandcamp.

To achieve a better effect, I  listened to the album on my sound system this morning.
Through the speakers, contrary to the usual headphones.

Wow !!
Clear your mind and give it a listen.
You will not be disappointed.

FRANK ZAPPA AND THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION - POP HISTORY

  • frank zappa and the mothers of invention: pop history
        (2011, 4cd-bootleg, --, original masters series)
Burkhard's recent book on CD bootlegs had me searching for some of the missing titles in my collection.
One of these was the "Pop History" 4 CD set.
With artwork that was obviously inspired by the 1970's Polydor samplers, this set came in a jewel case / slipcase combination.

CD 1 - 1970/11/06 - Fillmore West, San Francisco
CD 2 - 1973/11/11 - William Patterson College, Wayne, NJ
CD 3 + CD 4 - 1978/09/21 - Mid Hudson Civic Center, Poughkeepsie, NY

Not the worst choice of concerts.

(AMBROSE) SLADE - BEGINNINGS

Ambrose Slade's first album got released in 1969.
Entitled "Beginnings" in Europe and released as "Ballzy" in the U.S., it included Ambrose Slade's version of FZ's 'I Ain't Got No Heart'.

The latest re-issue of "Beginnings" is on transparent yellow & red splatter and it looks great.

-

FYI, the "Ballzy" also saw a 'colored vinyl' re-issue last year. On transparent turquoise vinyl....

And Ambrose Slade later changed their name to Slade, hence the info on the hype sticker on the cover.

ORCHESTRA OF THE UPPER ATMOSPHERE - THETA FOUR

  • orchestra of the upper atmosphere: theta four
        (2018, 2cd, uk, discus music)
The fourth release of the orchestra of the Orchestra Of The Upper Atmosphere featured
  • Martin Archer – keyboards, electronics, saxophones, clarinets, flutes, recorders, melodica, voice

  • Jan Todd – vocals, lyrics, electronics, harp, harp, korg wave drum, keyboards,...

Again, the Orchestra Of The Upper Atmosphere produces beautiful soundscapes, mixtures of composed and improvised music.
Progressive / experimental

Check it out !

EIDON - AGITATO

Eidon explains:

A little experiment! I wrote a generative composition; then I disassembled it into equal-sized blocks; and then I assembled the blocks (with repetitions). I call this technique "recomposition", or "phenogestalt" if you prefer a fancier word XD

STRATOSPHEERIUS RETURNS WITH TWO LIVE SHOWS

a message from Joe Deninzon

People of the Earth!

After a nearly 4-month hiatus while I was touring with Kansas, Stratospheerius returns to the live stage with a show at Debonair Music Hall (Teaneck, NJ) on Thursday, September 28th and Kennet Flash (Kennet Square, PA) on Saturday, Sept 30th.

We are joined on the bill by our good friend and keyboardist Bill Hubauer and his incredible band, “We Came from Space.”

We’ll be playing music from our recently released LIVE ALBUM, our new music from our upcoming studio album, and some of the old Stratos “hits!” Our live appearance are rare these days, so don’t miss these shows. We guarantee that fun will be had and many many notes will be played.

Prog on, my friends!

FRANK ZAPPA - JOE'S CAMOUFLAGE

Frank Zappa's "Joe's Camouflage" album was compiled by vaultmeister Joe Travers.
It got released (CD only) in 2014.

As one might have expected, unofficial vinyl versions appeared later the same year.
Aimed at the Zappa collectors, these LP counterfeits were released on black, on blue, and on white vinyl. And even as a picture disc.

I recently came across the black vinyl version, which seemed a good enough reason to mention it here (and to give it another spin).

THE ECLECTIC MAYBE BAND - BARS WITHOUT MEASURES

The Eclectic Maybe Band is another amazing Belgian project.
Created by Guy Segers and albums released on the Discus Music label.

Their brand-new "Bars Without Measures" sounds great.

Eclectic Maybe Band is the creation of Guy Segers, a player / composer / producer first prominent as bassist with legendary band Univers Zero, and subsequently active in many live and studio projects.

“Bars Without Measures” continues the band's established tradition which brings together detailed studio work with the creativity of real time improvisation. Using different groupings from within a large ensemble cast, which includes many well-known names, Guy has created an album where tracks are drawn from live improvisation in the studio ate mixed with created from the ground up, with players adding their composed or improvised parts one at a time. In both cases Guy assumes the role of master arranger, taking the improvisations as raw material and sculpting them into finished pieces.

THE ORCHESTRA OF THE UPPER ATMOSPHERE

An ensemble that's named The Orchestra Of The Upper Atmosphere does create certain expectations.
Spacey, psychedelic, a horn section, long pieces with lots of improvisations and soundscapes,...

And that's all true for The Orchestra Of The Upper Atmosphere, the Sheffield-based band that features saxophone player Martin Archer (of the Discus record label).

I just finished listening to the ensemble's first two albums, "Theta One" and "Theta Two", and it was a very pleasant introduction.

Nice. Very nice.

A SHORT CHAT WITH JOE NEWMAN (THE RUDY SCHWARTZ PROJECT)

The Rudy Schwartz Project has a new album out, "Is That A Quadrijawed Sea Urchin Or Are You Just Glad To See Me?".
I've been enjoying this release a lot for the last couple of weeks, so I had to throw some questions at Joe Newman, the mastermind behind the RSP.

UniMuta: Hi Joe. Congrats with the new album. So the first thing that I've got to ask : How do you come up with the lyrics? Or even the titles of the songs or compositions?

Joe Newman: It varies. Sometimes they come from dreams. Sometimes I’ll hear a sequence of words that I like when I’m watching a movie. Sometimes I just think of them out of thin air. I keep a list of potential song titles, and if I’m working on an instrumental, I’ll scan the list to find a title that fits. Sometimes I’ll write lyrics starting from a title in the list. I’m frequently more interested in how words sound together than in whether they actually mean anything logical.

Lyrics can precede their music or vice versa. They can also follow a common rhythmic pattern, or not. They can also convey logical thoughts, or not. So if you accept the preceding three sentences, that means there are at least eight different approaches to writing lyrics.

For example, “Vladimir” and “Yellow Balloon” are both songs that follow a “normal” pop song structure, but the former, whether you agree with it or not, expresses an idea or a point of view, while the latter makes no fucking sense whatsoever. Then there’s the lyrics that don’t follow the music at all. “Puncture Wounds” and “Is That a Quadrijawed Sea Urchin or Are You Just Glad to See Me?” are both examples of this, but while the former is a linear, albeit fucked up story, the latter is complete bulldada. Finally, you can write lyrics with no regard for rhythmic regularity, then write music around them, which can give you unusual song structures. “Barbecue Bud’s” is an example of this.

UniMuta: You do everything in The Rudy Schwartz Project. You write, play, sequence, produce and even release all the music yourself. However, the album features a handful of guests. How does this work? I guess you did not put out ads on the local record store's message board? In other words: How did you meet or get to know them, and how do you record together?

Joe Newman: I do all of that except releasing it. The digital distribution is handled by my record label, DC-Jam Records, for which I am extremely grateful. These days I also do the cover art myself, but in the past I’ve had some talented people provide artwork. The guest musicians come from a variety of places. The new album has people who live in Oregon, Arkansas and Texas. Bob Jacobs and Dr. Astronaut Body are guys I’ve known for many years. I worked with Bob in Texas back in the 80s when we were both software engineers, and we both lived in Portland, Oregon for a while after that. Dr. Astronaut Body is one of the members of Reagan’s Polyp, and I met him through Subgenius circles. David Morrison is in Texas, but I recorded with him before I ever met him in person. He’s a much better vocalist and guitarist than I am, and he’s actually saved my ass a couple of times when I’ve written songs that I find I’m incapable of singing adequately. My vocal range isn’t what it used to be.

The way we record together is made simple through technology. In the old days, when Rev. Ivan Stang appeared on “Günther Packs a Stiffy”, he had to travel to my house in Austin to record his part. Today it’s easy for everyone to record their parts in their own home or studio, then email the stems for me to mix in. Although in Bob’s case on the new album I just had him record a MIDI sequence, which gave me the added flexibility of choosing any patch I wanted for his solo. He did this while vacationing in Costa Rica.

UniMuta: "Is That A Quadrijawed Sea Urchin" presents a beautiful mix of music styles: pop / rock, contemporary rock, doo wop, classical, contemporary classical,...
Today's favorite is 'Republican Toilet Stall Fantasia' where you have a playful and quirky melody over a club mix jazz groove. I love it.
When you're composing, do you have an idea what the finished piece should sound like, or is something that grows while you're working on it?

Joe Newman: I usually have an idea of what I want it to sound like, but to be honest, it rarely ends up that way. Sometimes I’m disappointed, and sometimes I like it better than what I thought I’d get. “Republican Toilet Stall Fantasia” is one I was especially pleased with, and the way it came about was unusual. A few years ago, I mixed an album for Dr. Astronaut Body called “Berfly Tutts”, which is absolutely fucking insane and hilarious. I really hope he gets around to releasing it some day. While I was doing this, I was mixing and matching a shit ton of material, including some vocal tracks that I loved, but had no place to put. So I kept an archive of this stuff and finally got around to asking Dr. Astronaut Body if I could use the vocal residue of “Berfly Tutts”. He graciously consented, so I began constructing music around this stuff, which I enjoyed very much. This is why he gets partial songwriting credit on that track, because I rarely write music with other people.

UniMuta: I think it's great that you're (still) releasing your music on CD. And I guess that the CDR-on-demand service that Kunaki is offering suits you fine?

Joe Newman: It’s really the only option I have for making this stuff available in some physical format for the people who want it. It’s just not practical or profitable to order hundreds of CDs, pay the shipping costs, then not sell enough units to break even, while cluttering up my closets. Not many people consume music that way anymore, and my music has very limited appeal anyway. So I’m glad a company like Kunaki exists for the few Luddites remaining who like it.

UniMuta: Thank you for taking the time for this short chat & please keep on making this beautiful music.
As someone once said: "Music is the best".

The Rudy Schwartz Project's "Is That A Quadrijawed Sea Urchin Or Are You Just Glad To See Me?" is available from Kunaki :

        (2023, cd, Europe, journeyman)
East coast southern rock band Robert Jon & The Wreck released "Ride Into The Light" earlier this year.
On CD and on LP (colored vinyl).

This is fun: laid back, guitar oriented & with the typical vocal harmonies.
"Ride Into The Light" was my introduction to RJ & TW. The band has been around for over ten years and has released quite a number of albums.
And it looks like they love Belgium :-)  as they recently released a concert they did at the Ancienne Belgique in Brussels !

PICCHIO DAL POZZO - IN CAMPORELLA

  • picchio dal pozzo: in camporella
(2023, download / streaming, USA, cuneiform)

Cuneiform Records is changing. Only the better selling artists are still being released on CD.
The other ones become part of the download / streaming catalogue.

That being said, Cuneiform is still a standard when it comes to the quality of the music, of the artists that they work with.

Italian quartet Picchio dal Pozzo is an excellent example.
Top notch improvised music by Aldo De Scalzi (keyboards, electronics), Claudio Lugo (soprano sax, electronics),  Paolo Griguolo (guitar, synthesizer), Aldo Di Marco (drums).

Four long, drawn-out musical excursions.
Beautiful.
