FRENCH COMIC BOOK ON UNDERGROUND MUSIC

French publishing house Glénat released a comic book entitled:

"Undergound : Rockers Maudits & Grandes Prêtresses du Son"

My journey into the world of Krautrock continues with Can's "Live In Stuttgart 1975".

Wikipedia adds:
Can (stylised as CAN) was a German experimental rock band formed in Cologne in 1968 by the core quartet of Holger Czukay (bass, tape editing), Irmin Schmidt (keyboards), Michael Karoli (guitar), and Jaki Liebezeit (drums). The group cycled through several vocalists, most prominently the American-born Malcolm Mooney (1968–70) and the Japanese-born Damo Suzuki (1970–73), as well as various temporary members.

Coming from backgrounds in the avant-garde and jazz, the members of CAN blended elements of psychedelic rock, funk, and noise on influential albums such as Tago Mago (1971), Ege Bamyasi (1972) and Future Days (1973). CAN also had occasional commercial success, with singles such as "Spoon" and "I Want More" reaching national singles charts. They have been widely hailed as pioneers of the German krautrock scene, and a considerable influence on subsequent rock, post-punk, ambient, and electronic music.

"Live In Stuttgart 1975" features Holger Czukay, Jaki Liebezeit, Michael Karoli and Irmin Schmidt, the four founding members of the band.
Lots of classical elements, psychedelic sounds and jazz drumming.

HORACE TAPSCOTT AND THE PAN AFRICAN PEOPLES ARKESTRA

Starting out on the trombone and later switching to the piano Horace Tapscott founded the Pan African Peoples Arkestra in the early sixties.
They didn't release their first album until 1978.

Mothers of Invention keyboard legend Don Preston and his Trio will be performing a free-form Virtual Concert at The World Stage on July 2, 2021!

Don Preston leads a life filled with music, innovation, and experimentation. “Groundbreaking” is a phrase that is clearly overused…with Don it rings true. One of the first performers to drag a pile of oscillators and filters onstage, he brought his classical training to the avant-garde. In the early 60s a weird guy named Frank Zappa would come to see Don’s “electronic music with films of bacterial life” shows in Los Angeles. Don was soon in Zappa’s radical new group The Mothers Of Invention, touring and playing on classics like “We're Only In It For The Money” and “Roxy & Elsewhere” from 1966 to 1973.

Don’s played with everyone from Elvin Jones to The Residents, Jack Bruce and Robbie Krieger. His keyboard solos on Zappa albums, as well as countless soundtracks like Coppola’s Apocalypse Now, are considered ground-breaking moments in synthesizer music history.

Still very active in his 80’s, Don was there for the dawn of electronic musical performance, and today grafts new technologies into his experimental palette with software synths & iPhone apps, blending jazz, rock, comedy, magic and ambient synths into a captivating performance.

Don has performed with artists like: Frank Zappa, Lou Rawls, Al Jarreau, Nat King Cole, Billy Daniels, Johnnie Ray, Vaughn Monroe, Connie Francis, Herbie Mann, Elvin Jones, Charlie Haden, Art Davis, Paul Bley, Carla Bley, Joe Beck, Shorty Rogers, Leo Sayer, Charles Lloyd, Nelson Riddle, J.R. CORI JACOBS RECORDED A FRANK ZAPPA TRIBUTE

L.A.-based keyboard player and composer Cori Jacobs released a track entitled ‘Zappa’ on his “O.1.K” mini album.
Cori added:
“Frank Zappa is an influence of mine because he was a visionary. Self taught, in the beginning, like me, he learned to read and write his compositions down. I named track 3 on my "O.1.K" album 'Zappa' in tribute to Frank.
Frank also employed another huge influence of mine, George Duke. My favorite track, with George Duke on it, is Inca Roads.
I met Dweezil Zappa auditioning for a tour with him playing his fathers music and it was a joy to jam Inca Roads with him.”

KATHREPTIS - THIRD DEMO

Costa Rica-based black metal and grind band Kathreptis released two versions of FZ’s ‘Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance’ on their “Third Demo” Bandcamp album. 

Both tracks were also made available on the “Carnicería!: 6 Ways Of Disgusting Noise” compilation that got released through Bandcamp in 2020.

“Third Demo” recently got CDR release, presenting the alternate version of the FZ composition as a bonus track (not listed on the track listing).

MIKEYELDEY - THE ALBUM FOR SEGA GENESIS

Michael Elder, also known as mikeyeldey released “The Album For Sega Genesis” on a game box cartridge (!!). The bandcamp download version presented a set of bonus tracks, including Michael’s rendition of Frank Zappa’s ‘Peaches En Regalia’, performed on a Sega Genesis Model 2.

FRED HÄNDL & MARK WATSON - BOY WONDER, I LOVE YOU

Check out Fred Händl & Mark Watson's version of Burt Ward's 'Boy Wonder, I Love You', written by F.Zappa and released in 1966.

It's actually a reworked version of the piece that Fred did for Andrew Greenaway's "Lost Meat" collection in 2019. This time with Mark on vocals.

FRANK ZAPPA - ZAPPA '88: THE LAST U.S. SHOW

The latest Zappa release by the ZFT.
Recorded on March 25, 1988 at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, USA, this 2 CD set presents the complete show. Well, minus the two tracks that Dweezil performed on as Dweezil wasn't happy with his performance. These tracks were replaced by recordings of those same tracks, but from another show.

I'm quite pleased with this album.
Sure, Frank would never have released this. He would have picked or put together the best versions from different shows, but that doesn't mean that this isn't a great concert.
And it brings back nice memories of seeing the band in Ghent in 1988 where they also performed The Beatles Medley : Norwegian Jim / Louisiana Hooker With Herpes / Texas Motel
(= Norwegian Wood / Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds / Strawberry Fields Forever, lyrics by FZ)

I recently got hold of a physical copy of The Headshakers' first EP.
Released around 2010 (discogs says 2009, bandcamp says 2010).

Only three tracks, but excellent.

You might remember The Headshakers as the band that supported the Orchestre Philhamonique de Strasbourg during the two "200 Motels, The Suites" concerts in France in 2018.
Furthermore, the band released their version of FZ's 'I'm The Slime' as a hidden track on their 2012 "We Jazz, We Rock, We Funk" CDEP.

This 2010 CD EP is also available on Bandamp.

I posted a picture of these twins on Facebook a couple of weeks ago but I only added them to the UM Archives earlier today.
The Japanese version is a first edition and came from the collection of the late Tom Brown.
Very happy with that one.

You might know music enthusiast Cor van Diejen as the writer of the Slikdrek columns in the late Dutch Black Page fanzine.
In more recent years, Cor updated and re-released these columns in "Een Modder Van Inventie" but he also produced writings on Don Van Vliet ("Een Harlekijneend,...") and on Stravinsky.

Never afraid to challenge himself, Cor recently produced "Grove Bonken" in which he gives his unvarnished opinion on 182 composers of the 20th century.
Peppered with anecdotes, this 500-plus page hardback book will tell you things you didn't know about Guus Janssen, Sun Ra, Frank Zappa, Olivier Messiaen, George Gerswin, Morton Subotnick, Raymond Scott, Peter Eötvös, and many, many more.

Fascinating.

RAOUL PETITE - LE GRAND TOUT

A couple of years ago French band Raoul Petite released two compilation albums : 80 tracks on four discs.
The perfect introduction to the band.

The first album, "Le Grand Tout (Ou Presque)" included 'Mister Z', previously released on the band's "Têt De Krän" album. 'Mister Z' was their tribute to Frank Zappa.

French band Raoul Petite performed at the Zappanale festival in 2011. At the time, I had never heard of them.
Pop music with a twist.
In French.
And inspired by Frank Zappa.
(Gruppo Sportivo comes to mind)

The "Lives 1980 - 2007" 2 CD set presents material that got recorded in concert in 1984, 1986, 1988, 1992, 1998 and 2007.

TIM BUCKLEY

Tim Buckley only released a handful of albums between 1966 and 1974, some of which were on Frank Zappa / Herb Cohen's DiscReet record label.

Several live recordings have been released after his passing in 1975.

The latest one is called "Merry-Go-Round At The Carousel".

MILES DAVIS & PRINCE

July 1991, Miles Davis performed at the "Jazz At Vienne" festival.
He included two Prince compositions in his setlist: 'Penetration' and 'Jailbait'.

The concert will be released on the "Merci Miles! Live At Vienne" album.
2 CD or 2 LP set, on the Rhino Records label.

THE RESIDENTS - GINGERBREAD MAN

Originally released on CD in 1994, The Residents' "Gingerbread Man" has been made available on LP by Cherry Red last month.

The music is fantastic and the artwork fits the content.

Love it.

European freaks might need to be reminded that Cherry Red operates from the UK, which is no longer part of the EU.
In my case, Belgian melomaniac, that implied that I had to pay an additional 36.63 euro (taxes and custom fee), while the actual order, LP & CD plus postage, was 30 euro.
Mind you, this will even get worse starting on July 1 when

1) there will no longer be an exception for package with a value below 22 euro

2) the customers fee will increase...

Nevertheless, an amazing album.

THE RESIDENTS - GINGERBREAD MAN PRESERVED

The Preserved edition of The Residents' 1994 "Gingerbread Man" album counts 3 discs.
Next to the (amazing) original album, the set presents live performances of "Gingerbread Man" pieces, "The Fat Boy" tape that eventually evolved into "Gingerbread Man" and "Hunters", instrumental versions, material from "Hunters", and the "Prelude To The Teds'.

Voices for the characters were provided by not only The Residents, but also Laurie Amat (The Weaver), Diana Alden (The Confused Transsexual), Molly Harvey (The Old Woman), Isabelle Barbier, and Todd Rundgren (The Sold Out Artist, The Ascentic, and The Aging Musician).

Amazing.

DWEEZIL ZAPPA RELEASED "CUP OF JOE" MINI ALBUM

The last couple of months, Dweezil made quite a number of podcasts on the subject of the late Edward Van Halen, called "Runnin' With The Dweezil". It featured Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Nuno Bettencourt, to name just three.

A couple of days ago, Dweezil started releasing music again. 
"Cup Of Joe" is a Mini Concert series that uses the Zappa Plays Zappa concerts as a source of material.

Your Old Droog has sampled (or referred to) Frank Zappa's music on several of his albums.

Listening to his 2019 album (that includes a Frank Zappa reference and a Wild Man Fischer sample), I was browsing the internet and stumbled on YOD's "It Wasn't Even Close" album.

STEVEN DELANNOYE'S NEW YORK TRIO + FRANK VAGANEE - HERE COMES TOMORROW

In 2009, after having finished his conservatory studies, Steven Delannoy received a scholarship to continue his study at the Manhattan School Of Music.
It was in New York that Steven met bass player Desmond White and drummer Jesse Simpson, with whom he formed the Steven Delannoy Trio.
They toured extensively and invited fellow saxophone player Frank Vaganée for a number of concerts, resulting in the "Uptown" album.
In 2013, they recorded "Here Comes The Tomorrow", a beautiful and energetic album.

Manuel de la Fuente is professor Audo-Visual Communication at the Valencia university.
His "Frank Zappa - Music refuses to die" got released by the Alianza publishing house about a week ago.
In 2014, Manuel did the translation for the Spanish version of The Real Frank Zappa Book. In 2016, he translated Pauline Butcher's book.
