MARK WINGFIELD

Mark Wingfield.

Moonjune records :
Challenging the millenniums-old 'nothing new under the sun' assertion, the nose thumbing at convention continues: as pioneering UK guitarist Mark Wingfield provides the second installment of live look-in's while recording his first ever solo album. The track's backdrop is an immediate Eastern meditative drone, with the guitarist weaving his magic throughout this musical homage to the majestic mountain range which sprawls across Northwestern India. Gliding through the atmosphere, high above, we find Wingfield's soaring electric guitar providing the narrative – once again, in appropriate fashion, eclipsing traditional tonal bounds. Buckle up, and enjoy your flight!

DEVIN TOWNSEND, MIKE KENEALLY, MORGAN ÅGREN, NATHAN NAVARRO

From Mike Keneally on YouTube:

Here's what Devin has to say about this video: "So this here is from the Empath Monnow Valley drum recording sessions. After one of the last days of tracking. Myself, Mike Keneally, Morgan Ågren and Nathan Navarro had our first jam, and this was it. Recorded live off the floor and mixed on the fly by the fantastic folks at Monnow Valley in Wales with Nolly Getgood and his team as well, it was straight in and out of a great old Neve mixing desk, and one take. Would be cool to continue with this and see where it goes when we're able again maybe."
I'm really grateful this moment was captured so well, and yeah I'm good to do more...

DAYS BETWEEN STATIONS TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM

From GlassOnyon PR :

Prog Duo Days Between Stations to Release New Album “GIANTS” Feat. Billy Sherwood, Colin Moulding and Durga McBroom!

Los Angeles - Prog duo Days Between Stations (DBS) is releasing their highly anticipated 3rd album titled “GIANTS” which features guest appearances by legendary XTC member Colin Moulding, Billy Sherwood of YES and backing vocalist for Pink Floyd Durga McBroom on Sept. 21, 2020!

Although firmly rooted in the progressive rock genre, the new DBS album “GIANTS” ventures into more rock-oriented material. Says guitarist Sepand Samzadeh, “'GIANTS' really brings the band through areas that we have not ventured before. Our debut album was instrumental, cinematic, atmospheric, experimental and more contemporary in vision and sound. The sophomore album had both elements with a classic prog sound. GIANTS is more aggressive, unabashed and raw. It is designed to sound as us as a 4 piece band. Billy had more creative and producer input and really pushed us to play better, faster, take more chances and recorded us in fluid/ unrepressed state of mind”

VARIOUS ARTISTS - SAILOR MOON - FRIENDS FOREVER - VOL. 7

My search for recordings with the music of Frank Zappa directed me to "Sailor Moon", a Japanese anime.
Money-making marginal phenomena included a series of CDs of which Volume 7 presented Double Up performing FZ's 'Bobby Brown'.
The original 1999 Double Up single release already left out some of the verses that were a bit too explicit but I don't have a clue if it was actually used in the anime series...

Remarkable wiki fact : Despite being intended for 4-year old girls (??), the original series has been censored in the U.S., removing lesbian scenes, upskirts, drunken characters,...

Here's the Double Up single:

GORESHIT - MEMESTREET

Goreshit (real name Leon Makepeace) released his “Memestreet” album through Bandcamp but also on CDR, in a limited edition of 100 copies. Both versions were the same and included Goreshit’s version of FZ’s ‘Flower Punk’ although the CD release misspelled it as ‘Flower Runk’.

DAVE MARTONE - GLEN DROVER - LIVE AT METALWORKS

“Live At Metalworks” presented two live sets: one by Dave Martone (with Glen Dover as a special guest on one song) and another one by Glen Dover (with Dave Martone as a special guest on one song).
These were live performances that were webcast over the internet on September 25, 2011. Glen’s set included his version of FZ’s ‘Filthy Habits’ as well as two pieces by Jean-Luc Ponty. The audio CD presented 14 tracks. The DVD had the same 14 tracks plus 4 bonus tracks. The recording of ‘Filthy Habits’ could be found on both the audio CD and the video DVD.

JIMMY CARL BLACK

I've updated the Jimmy Carl Black discography a bit.
Added info for :

ZAPPANALE

In more normal circumstances, I'd be enjoying the Zappanale festival in Bad Doberan, Germany: listening to the concerts, talking to friends, buying records,...
As it happens, Zappanale 30.5 is digital only. It's a pretty impressive online broadcast showcasing highlights from the previous years but it's, of course, not the same.

https://30-5.zappanale.de/#area-row

The only advantage is that I have some extra time to clean up my desk and some boxes with albums and CDs.
Still, looking forward to next year's edition.

SUR BAND - LIVE AT ZAPANALE

Kiev, Ukraine-based SUR band, or SЮR Band, recorded their concert at Zappanale on July 17, 2016. It featured Sherhii Radzetskyi (bass, vocals), Dmytro Radzetskyi (keyboard, radz-guitar, vocals), Antonina Radzetska (vocals), Ihor Bdichuk (trumpet, backing vocals), Rostyslav Yahodka (drums), Anton Boldenko (viola, percussion, backing vocals), Petro Bekleshov (guitar overdubs) and special guest Ian ‘Jumpy’ Jump (from The Muffin Men) (guitar).
Released in a cardboard package and presenting an all-Zappa set.
As a bonus, the album included an excerpt from an interview by Gernot Friedbacher.

The complete concert can be enjoyed on YouTube.
I remember that they played quite late but that I decided that I really wanted to watch this.
It's great to see it again.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - JAZZPRINT SAMPLER 2001

The 2001 sampler by the Jazzprint record label included the Zappatistas’ recording of a medley of Frank Zappa pieces as released on the Zappatistas’ “Live In Leeds” album.

SANNE WALLIS DE VRIES - STUK

Dutch comedien Sanne Wallis de Vries performed FZ’s ’Honey, Don’t You Want A Man Like Me?’ in concert during her 2003 shows. Recordings of the April 28 and 29 shows, including the Zappa piece, got released on her “Stuk” album.

CÉCILE NORDEGG - JAZZ PROCLAMATION

Actrice and vocalist Cécile Nordegg (also known as No-Ce) recorded Frank Zappa’s ‘Bobby Brown’ and released it on her “Jazz Proclamation Vol. 1” album. The album got released on vinyl only but got a combined CD release with Vol. 2 in 2018.

SH-BOOM FORSBERG - SH-BOOM FORSBERG

Ingo ‘Sh-Boom’ Forsberg’s 1992 eponymous album included his version of FZ’s ‘Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance’.
All instruments and vocals by Sh-Boom Forsberg.

SIMON BATES - AND ALL BECAUSE

Together with John Etheridge (guitar), Rob Statham (bass) and Mike Bradley (drums), UK saxophone and clarinet player Simon Bates recorded his arrangement of FZ’s ‘Let’s Make The Water Turn Black’. It got released on his “And All Because…” album.

CABALLERO REYNALDO - ANTOJOS VOL. 0-1-2-3-4

Caballero Reynaldo's latest release shows him from his most endearing side, performing jazz standards and classic pop tunes.
This is so much fun.

NURSE WITH WOUND - ROCK 'N ROLL STATION

This remastered reissue of “Rock ‘n Roll Station” included a previously unreleased mix of “Subteranean Zappa Blues’, a track that used the lyrics of FZ’s ‘Trouble Every Day’.

UNKLE - PSYENCE FICTION (SNEAK PREVIEW)

The album presented a track that sampled FZ's 'Apostrophe'.
It can also be found on this "Sneak Preview" 12". Both on the regular version and as on the instrumental version.

https://www.whosampled.com/sample/56487/UNKLE-Kool-G-Rap-Guns-Blazing-(Drums-of-Death-Pt.-1)-Frank-Zappa-Apostrophe/

YA HOZNA - YA HOZNA

Polish band Ya Hozna released their eponymous album in 1990.
The 1991 CD rerelease (and later reissues) got credited to lead vocalist Renata Przemyk.
The album included ‘Tortury’, a track that sounds like it was inspired by FZ’s ‘The Torture Never Stops’.

MORE INFO ON THE NEW ARKESTRA ALBUM

a message from the Strut record label

The planets align this October as the mighty Sun Ra Arkestra, under the direction of the maestro Marshall Allen, release their first studio album in over twenty years, ‘Swirling’.

Recorded at Rittenhouse Soundworks in Philadelphia, the new recording represents the continuation of a heartfelt rebirth of the Arkestra under Allen’s guidance since Sun Ra left the planet in 1993, gaining new generations of followers from their regular touring across the globe. With a big band line-up featuring long-standing Arkestra members including Danny Ray Thompson (RIP), Michael Ray, Vincent Chancey, Knoel Scott, Cecil Brooks, Atakatune (RIP), Elson Nascimento and Tyler Mitchell, the album is a full-blooded celebration of Sun Ra’s legacy.

Tracks include brand new arrangements of Arkestra staples ‘Angels And Demons At Play’, ‘Satellites Are Spinning’, ‘Door Of The Cosmos’ and ‘Rocket No. 9’ alongside lesser known gems; the rousing blues ‘Darkness’ is recorded here for the first time, resurrected from the Ra archives by Marshall Allen. Other highlights include an epic version of ‘Seductive Fantasy’ (first recorded on Ra’s ‘On Jupiter’ LP in 1979), the freeform sonic blast of ‘Infinity / I’ll Wait For You’ and a first ever recording of the Marshall Allen swing composition, ‘Swirling’.

“We truly hope that this recording brings much joy to a planet which is so deeply in need of a spirit sound and vibration,” states saxophonist Knoel Scott. “We hope it contributes to a change in the ominous direction of man’s journey through the cosmos.” “This new release is the Arkestra’s love offering to the world,” concludes Marshall Allen. “Beta music for a better world.”

Sun Ra Arkestra’s ‘Swirling’ is released on 9th October 2020 on Strut on all formats. The album was produced by Jim Hamilton at Rittenhouse Soundworks. Cover artwork is by Lewis Heriz.

GENTLE GIANT

From GlassOnyonPR

Gentle Giant Reunite Virtually For First Time In 4 Decades For New Video Along With Members of King Crimson, Yes and More!

Prog Legends Gentle Giant reunite for new version of “Proclamation” premiered by PROG Magazine

The classic Gentle Giant line-up have reunited for the first time since 1980 for a unique new video. Pieced together over the last few months, it’s a brand new performance of “Proclamation” (originally from the band’s 1974 album “The Power & The Glory”) including appearances from Gentle Giant alumni Derek, Ray and Phil Shulman, Gary Green, Kerry Minnear, John Weathers and Malcolm Mortimore. There are also guest appearances by numerous notable musicians including Jakko Jakszyk (King Crimson), Billy Sherwood (YES), Lee Pomeroy (ELO/Steve Hackett), Dan Reed (Dan Reed Network), Richard Hilton (Chic) and Mikey Heppner (Priestess).

“This terrible pandemic is being felt all over the world and with everyone being stuck at home, I figured now would be the perfect time to bring positivity out in the world, bring everyone together and celebrate our love of music and Gentle Giant,” explains Noah Shulman, son of Derek and mastermind behind this project tp Dom Lawson of PROG Magazine. “Over the years I was always amazed with how many people were filming their renditions of Gentle Giant tracks from all over the world on an array of instruments. So that sparked the idea of wanting to see them all in one place, blending sounds and instruments into a single track.”

Directed and edited by Noah Shulman and mixed by his uncle Ray, the video is likely to be remembered most for the momentous reuniting of the real Gentle Giant, albeit only briefly and via to the wonders of remote communication. Seeing that the band have never seemed likely to reform, this is a significant and exciting moment for Gentle Giant fans everywhere. Says Noah, “It’s a sort of thank you from the band to the fans.”

VARIOUS ARTISTS - THE SOUND ENGINEERING TAPES

The recordings on this lathe cut 10” disc were recorded and mixed in Dublin in 1987. Only a handful of copies were made.
Track 2 on side B featured a demo of Irish band Night Engines performing FZ’s ‘Cosmik Debris'.
Came in a plain white generic sleeve.

Needless to say that I'm pretty glad that I got hold of a copy.

ONE ALTERNATIVE - AIR SCULPTURE

Blending jazz, rock and folk music with classical styles, U.S. quintet Air Sculpture released their version of FZ’s ‘Son Of Mr. Green Genes’ on their “Air Sculpture” album.

Oboe and guitars.
Very  nice.
BTW, the liner notes mention that Air Sculpture was a term coined by Frank Zappa.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - 20 PER LUCA

This 2 CD compilation album was part of the “20 Per Luca – 1986-2006 – Chi Non Ha Memoria Non Ha Futuro” book, a publication to commemorate Luca Rossi.

The second disc featured the Orchestra Metropolis performing FZ’s ‘Trouble Every Day’.

SCOTT PARKER - DISCORPORATE!

  • discoprorate! - frank zappa in the studio 1966 - 1967
    by scott parker
(2017, book, usa, scott parker books / private release)

Scott Parker released his "Discorporate!" book a couple of years ago.
Subtitled "Frank Zappa In The Studio 1966 - 1967", it takes a closer look at the period when FZ was recording "Absolutely Free", "We're Only In It" and "Lumpy Gravy".
Almost 200 pages and excellent reading.

PLUME LATRAVERSE - PLUME POU DIGNE

Quebec, Canada-based songwriter Michel ‘Plume’ Latraverse released ‘Bonne Soirée’ on his ”Plume Pou Digne” album in 1974.
The track ends with Plume citing a couple of sentences from FZ’s ‘Cruising For Burgers’ !!

TONY ADAM - ZAPPA(S)

  • zappa(s)
    by tony adam
        (2020, book, usa, private release)
"Zappa(s)" is pocket-sized booklet that discusses various aspects of Frank Zappa: satirist, postmodernist, guitarist, composer, jazz-rocker, and outsider. Each aspect gets a couple of pages.
The booklet ends with, for me, the most interesting part : the influence of FZ's music on other bands and artists.

Interesting.

One of the bands that gets a mention in the book is Danish band Dr. Dopo Jam.

THIERRY MAILLARD TRIO AND PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA - ETHNIC SOUNDS

French composer and pianist Thierry Maillard released his "Ethnic Sounds" album in 2016. The album features his trio plus The Prague Philharmonic and a series of guests.
It's an impressive release.
Melodic with lots of different sounds and colours.

Track 3 is called "Zappa" and features special guest Nguyên Lê on the guitar. A beautiful tribute.

THE RETURN OF THE FRANK ZAPPA COLORING BOOK

  • frank zappa beautiful coloring book
    by giselle brooks
        (2020, book, usa, private release)

There's coloring books and there's coloring books...
This one's a joke showing black and white scans of familiar pictures...
A black and white scan of the cover of "The Real Frank Zappa Book" ??? As a coloring page ???
True, I don't intend to color any of these but I was hoping to see some (original) black and white drawings.
What a disappointment.

DA WERDZ

  • da werdz
(1980, book, germany, dwarf nebula productions)

I recently found (and bought) "Da Werdz", a 40-page booklet with lyrics of some FZ songs.
Published in 1980 by Dwarf Nebula Production(s).

Contrary to what Avo mentions on:
https://www.afka.net/Books/Da_Werdz.htm,
my copy does not have the Sheik Yerbouti sticker on the front cover.

A nice little find.

The same package also included two Japanese music mags from the early eighties.
I was pretty sure that I already had a copy of the mags but couldn't locate them...

COR VAN DIEJEN - STRAVINSKY UITGEBAGGERD

A couple of years ago, Cor van Diejen published "Modder Van Inventie", a book that collected all his musings about the music of Frank Zappa. More recently, he finished "Een Harlekijneend, Gans Wit Genekt, Kwaakt" about Captain Beefheart.

Prior to "Modder Van Inventie" en "Een Harlekijneend", Cor had already written "Stravinsky Uitgebaggerd", a comprehensive work about Stravinsky.
The references to Stravinsky's life and correspondence add some very interesting info.

The book, in Dutch, is available from:
https://www.boekenbestellen.nl/boek/stravinsky-uitgebaggerd/19310

Hmmm...
Maybe I should consider getting the below 56 CD box and dive into it.

TUMBLEWEED - THE WATERFRONT YEARS

Initially, Tumbleweed’s “The Waterfront Years” got released in 2010 on the Aztec Music label. It got a reissue in 2013 on the Sandman Records label in the Classic Australian Albums series.
Jewel case release in a slipcase.
“The Waterfront Years” compilation album included their version of FZ’s ‘Trouble Every Day’, a track that Tumbleweed had released on their 1993 “Daddy Long Legs” CD EP.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - VARIÉTÉ

The Orange Records “Variété” sampler included Supermoko Ultrabeaver & Olive’s version of FZ’s ‘Any Way The Wind Blows’, originally released in 2000 on 7”.
Presented in a jewel case, the album cover was a collection of four cards, each one of which could be used as the album cover. The first card had a hole in it, showing the flower on the second card. The album had no back cover.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - GRILLFEST 2007

The “Grillfest 2007” compilation 2 CD set included Alex Rosén’s recording of FZ’s ‘Bobby Brown’, originally released on Alex's “In Person” album in 1998.
