ZAPPANALE #30 - HELMUT KING - LEAVE MY NOSE ALONE PLEASE, KING SIZE BOX

Artist, sculptor, painter Helmut King has become a well-established part of Zappanale.
His paintings and pictures are a perfect match to the Zappa Universe.

This year, Helmut presented "Leave My Nose Alone Please, King Size Box", a 3D box that presented an 80-page catalogue, postcards, buttons, fake money, and more.

Here's a side view (next to a mirror) :

It's a box with a 3D FZ on it.
Sort of a hologram catalogue box.
I love it ! And the contents is as impressive.

ZAPPANALE #30 - STEFAN KLEIBER - ZAPPATOWN

  • einmal zappatown

    by stefan kleibner
        (2019, book, germany, verlag regionalkultur)

"Einmal Zappatown und zurück" displays Stefan Kleibner's first visit to Zappanale. In words, pictures and interviews.

On first sight, the book did look rather interesting but I was rather disappointed once I started reading it. The story starts with a couple of pages about Hank Woods' Zappanale Club (??) and his scheduled, Ike-Willis-guided Zappanale visits (??).
Next up, Stefan walks us through his Zappanale experience. Snippets and interviews.

Unfortunately, no (or not enough) mention of Zappnoise (with Peter Görs), Flat Earth Society, Piniol, Alex Hand, Dietmar Bonnen, The Grandmothers, the expo concerts, the Zappateers, the visitors from all over the world, the shops at the festival ground,...

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that I expected a complete overview. I'm just disappointed that this 100-page book does not offer more...

A missed opportunity.

Completists only.

SNAFU

Bobby Harrison and Micky Moody started writing together and auditioning new band members. They found former Tramline drummer Terry Popple (previously with Van Morrison), bass player Colin Gibson (formerly of Ginger Baker's Airforce) and keyboard /fiddle player Pete Solley (later in Whitesnake). Gibson suggested the name Snafu, a term he lifted from a Captain Beefheart song "Big Eyed Beans From Venus" on their 1972 album, Clear Spot.
The musical influences were mainly American, and came from bands such as The Allman Brothers Band and in particular Little Feat, one of Bobby Harrison’s favourite bands.

ZAPPANALE #30 - ZAPPA BOOTZ, DA SOURCES - A FAN PROJECT, EDITED BY BURKHARD SCHEMPP

zappa bootz - da sources

a fan project, edited by burkhard schempp
    (2019, book, germany, private release)

I received this beautiful 180-page hardcover / bound book as a gift at Zappanale.
The book lists all of the circulating live recordings of Frank Zappa as we know it from the Zappateers website.
The digital version can be found here :
http://www.zappateers.com/fzshows/index.html

And now this list is also available in this fine book, edited by Burkhard Schempp.
He did a fine job !

Check out Burkhard's Zappa blog on :  http://www.vivavincent.de/

SAMPLERS AND COMPILATION ALBUMS

Here's a list of samplers / compilation albums that I've recently added to "The Others Of Invention" section.

Includes Blumentopf : 'Macht Platz' (samples Frank Zappa's 'The Grand Wazoo').

A video magazine on DVD, includes Blumentopf : 'Macht Platz' (samples Frank Zappa's 'The Grand Wazoo').

"Peter's Pop Show"... I like the sound of that...
Anyway, it includes Ostbahn-Kurti and Die Chefpartie : 'Bertl Braun' (= 'Bobby Brown' (Frank Zappa) with German / Austrian lyrics).

Includes Ostbahn-Kurti and Die Chefpartie : 'Bertl Braun' (= 'Bobby Brown' (Frank Zappa).

Compilation. Also includes 'Bertl Braun' (= 'Bobby Brown' (Frank Zappa).

Promotional and limited edition 2CD set. Includes Ostbahn-Kurti and Die Chefpartie : 'Bertl Braun' (= 'Bobby Brown' (Frank Zappa).

BLUMENTOPF - MACHT PLATZ!

In my quest for recordings of bands that perform (or use) Frank Zappa's music, I recently added a couple of Blumentopf singles to the list.
German rap band Blumentopf sampled Frank Zappa's 'Grand Wazoo' in their 'Macht Platz'' song. The track can be found on their 2003 release "Gern Geschenen".
The same track also got released on a promotional CD single, on a regular CD single (also featuring an instrumental version), on a promotional 12" vinyl single, and on a regular 12" single (also with the instrumental version).

KURT OSTBAHN - OIS WORSD BRAUCHST!

Kurt Ostbahn was the driving force behind Ostbahn-Kurti and Die Chefpartie, a band that recorded a German version of Frank Zappa's 'Bobby Brown' in 1992.
The track got re-released on this 3CD compilation album in 2011.

ZAPPANALE #30 - THE EXPO AND THE BOOK - THE ZAPPA ATLAS

Reading about a book that will draw out all of the tours of Frank Zappa and even of The Mothers of Invention, is one thing.
Holding the actual tome in one's hands and browsing through it, is quite another.

The book totals some 250 pages. It has over 120 pages with maps and schemes that show where FZ played during his career. And with whom he played.
Actually, it starts with the places where Frank lived: Where he grew up and the different places he moved to after leaving his parent's house.
The second part of the book, another 100+ pages, takes a look at FZ's official discography. One album per page : album cover, release date, recording dates, track listing, and some comments. Very nice.
Hardback, bound and huge. Exactly how an atlas should be done.

The Zappa Tour Atlas also was the main theme for this year's Zappanale Expo. Enlarged maps, tour posters,...
I was quite impressed.
Respect -> Mick Zeuner, Klaus Kühner and Andrew Greenaway.

THE MOFÜGLYS - A MURDER OF CROWS

Steve Welsh and Chris Witner are the guys behind The Mofüglys. As far as I know, "A Murder Of Ravens" is their first album.
Among the guest musicians that participated on this impressive release one finds Ike Willis, Bryan Beller, Rick Musallam (who performed with Mike Keneally) and Eric Svalgard (who was part of Project/Object).
Yes, I used the word "impressive", because that's exactly what this album is. I picked up my copy at the merch table at the Zappanale festival last week and if my memory serves me right, I think I even recall seeing a couple of people walking around in a Mofüglys t-shirt.
The band's name didn't ring any bells, although once back home, my notes told me that I had mentioned them on this very blog in 2013 already. I guess it took some time to finish the album.
Anyway, at the merch table at Zappanale, it was the list of guests (mentioned on the back cover of the album) that convinced me to buy it. An excellent decision, even if I say so myself.

"A Murder Of Crows" is a beautiful, Frank Zappa-inspired progressive rock concept album.
Fine compositions, a strong message, and impressive contributions by the guest artists, wrapped in great artwork.

Essential listening!

NTS - ZAPPORNO

"Zapporno" is the third release by Czech trio NTS. As the liner notes state (and the pictures on the front and back of the album show), "Zapporno" is NTS' tribute to Frank Zappa.

Progressive rock / contemporary jazz.
Produced by Simon Ratcliffe (of Basement Jaxx).

I only caught part of their Zappanale concert (during the warm-up party on Thursday) and that sounded really good.
So does this album.

Here's a band picture that I found on the internet :

Check the album out here :

ZAPPANALE #30 - AM KAMP

Wednesday was Hamburg where we saw the Ensemble Blue Marlin at the St.Katharinenkirche.

Ensemble Blue Marlin as the above picture shows a marlin and not a shark.

Thursday we drove into Bad Doberan.
The visit always starts the same way : park the car, walk past the statue, say hi to friends (inevitable as the complete town is crowded with familiar faces / music freaks), visit the expo, check in at the hotel, and be at the Kamp before the first concert starts (at 16h00).

Swedish duo Magnifznt opened.
Two guitars and two voices in the afternoon sun.
The perfect appetizer.

Next up were the NTS Trio and Bad Penny.
We went for "Kosmische Brocken" at the Kamp Kino Theater instead.
"Kosmische Brocken" is a movie / documentary about Zappanale. A fine introduction for those who have never been to Zappanale, and funny snapshots for the seasoned visitors. I loved it. Would be nice on DVD...

We stayed in the theater after "Kosmische Brocken" to catch the interview with Candy Zappa where Candy read fragments of her book My Brother Was A Mother.

ZAPPANALE #30 - PROMO TALKS

Zappanale is the perfect place to meet all sorts of people. Not just the average Zappahead, but also the freaks, musicians, writers, festival organizers, radio show hosts, blog hosts and whatever more.

In my case, it was the perfect opportunity to hand out some CDs by Bestiaplanete that I had received from Mariano Alvarez (lead singer of Bestiaplanete).

Bestiaplanete is a rock band from Buenos Aires, Argentina.
A band that, in their own words, wants to change the vibrational frequency of the earth through funk music.

ZAPPANALE #30 - THE HAMBURG EVENT

For the last eleven years, the Bach organ support group has been scheduling concerts at the St.Katharinenkirche in Hamburg as 'opener concerts' for the Zappanale Festival.
The Hamburg concert always takes place on Wednesday and the Zappanale festival starts on Friday (not counting the warm-up party in Bad Doberan on Thursday).

Initially, the concerts were set up as a fundraiser to repair the organ (that J.S. Bach once used to play).
Now that the organ has been restored, it's sort of a support for the Bach organ group.
Hence the title: "Zappa Spielt Für Bach".

This year's show consisted of three parts : a Frank Zappa set (by all the musicians), a Thelonious Monk set (by the jazz trio and with Napoleon doing vocals on one piece), and after the break, Fried Dähn's compositions (Fried Dähn and Laurenz 'light show' Theinert).
The show ended with another couple of Zappa pieces as encores (by everyone but Napoleon)

Here's a picture that was taken during the encores. If you look closely, you can see the band in the below center. The rest of the picture shows the walls (and ceiling) of the church.

Napoleon Murphy Brock: vocals, sax, flute
Chris Garcia: marimba, percussion
Matthaeus Winnitzi: piano
John Hughes: bass
Björn Lücker: drums
Fried Dähn: electric celle, arrangements, musical direction
Laurenz Theinert: visuals

Frank Zappa
  • Yellow Shark "Walk On Music"
  • Uncle Meat
  • Sleep Dirt
  • Twenty Small Cigars
  • Oh No
  • Son Of Orange County
Thelonious Monk
  • ...
  • Round Midnight
-- break --

Friedemann Dähn
  • Supercluster for 4 Players, Conductor and Grand Piano, feat. Chris Garcia, percussion in dialog
  • Die 'Sonografen' (with Laurenz Theinert)
  • Tango Poison
  • Add
  • Double Check
  • Bach on Mars (prelude nr.1 für cello bwv 1007)
  • Sch
  • Furado
Frank Zappa
  • Blessed Relief
  • King Kong
  • Son Of Mr. Green Genes
It was a very fine concert. It's never easy to make concerts sound good in a church, but this time, the sound guy did an excellent job.
The jazz trio made it swing; Napoleon was in fine shape; Fried Dähn gave me goosebumps with his oriental sounds and feedback on his electric cello (L.Shankar came to mind); and Chris Garcia showed why the marimba is such a beautiful sounding instrument.
Loved it.
The Zappa tunes were great.
The Monk pieces sounded fine, especially when Napi added the vocals.
And Fried's pieces (+ light show) were quite interesting.

That's what I call kicking off Zappanale..

The show got recorded by German national radio so we might get another CD release.

Here's some snippets from the latest ten years;

RESIDENTS UPDATE : SOUNDTRACK RELEASED TO THE BRICKEATERS BOOK

https://booksale.residents.com/

It’s been almost exactly a year since The Residents’ neo noir pulp masterpiece, The Brickeaters, was released by Feral House. We were celebrating the book’s success when it suddenly hit me – WE HAVEN’T OFFERED IT FOR SALE ON RESIDENTS.COM!?!?! Okay, the last year has been pretty crazy, but there’s really no excuse for not making it available to true fans on THE RESIDENT’S PERSONAL WEBSITE!!! My bad…

So, to make amends we have a ONE TIME ONLY SUPER SPECIAL MONDO COOL OFFER! You can buy The Brickeaters right here for 18 buckeroos – okay, that’s retail price, no big deal. But The Residents said we’ve got to add some music, which was a bit of a head scratcher until one of them said – HEY! What about the River of Crime soundtrack as a bonus? It’s perfect!

And of course The Eyeballs are always right. Now, the River of Crime Soundtrack was released in 2006 as part of the two CD ROC set which featured all five podcast episodes, but this is the soundtrack as it was originally composed and never released until NOW! – all 68 minutes of it.

(Some of you hardcore followers have heard several of these tracks on the Free! Weird! page on the website, but this is the first time they are all collected together and put on a CD.)

Compiled from a number of Sun Ra albums that got released in the late fifties / early sixties, plus a couple of inevitable unissued tracks, "Exotica" presents two discs of laid back jazz tunes.
Out on the Modern Harmonic label.

Comes with expanded liner notes, also discussing the music of Martin Denny and Les Baxter.

Also available as a 3LP set.

BELEW - FLUX VOLUME TWO

Adding one more album to the Adrian Belew discography...
"Flux Volume Two" got released in 2017. It's another set of 50 little songs and compositions, each one about one minute long...
Intended for shuffle playing.
Together with volumes one and two, I would guess.

ADRIAN BELEW - NEVER ENOUGH

Four tracks.
One was taken from the "Here" album, the other three were previously unreleased versions of album tracks.

SUN RA / HENRY DUMAS - THE ARK AND THE ANKH

"The Ark And The Ankh" documents a conversation / interview between Sun Ra and Henry Dumas.
Completists only.

The recording also got released on a 12" vinyl picture disc.

BELEW - FLUX 3

Adding data for Adrian Belew's recent "Pop Sided" album, I noticed that I still needed to add "Flux 3".
The Flux Series is an enormous collection of little musical pieces that are intended to be played in shuffle mode. Volume three got released last year and presents 50 pieces for the puzzle.
Beautiful.

ULTRA ZOOK

Data for Ultra Zook has been added to the United Mutations Archives.

Their first album got released a little while ago.
Essential listening.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - MAPPA ZAPPA EP

The Extended Play follow-up to the "Mappa Zappa" album and the perfect companion to Mick Zeuner's Zappa Tour Atlas.

Two new tracks plus two previously released ditties.

Fred Händl
Z.E.R.O., short for the Zappa Early Renaissance Orchestra
Caballero Reynaldo,
Jerry Outlaw & Friends

ZAPPA I NORGE

  • zappa i norge
by jon larsen, ulf hoberg, erlend sundin, erland bekkelund
        (2014, book, norway, kunstbokforlaget dgb)

I recently got hold of the first edition of this beautiful picture book, "Zappa In Norway".

I was / am very happy with my second edition (december 2014).
It wasn't limited / numbered but did have some extra pictures and a number of corrections. As a fine bonus, it has a number of signatures (printed) on the first page.

The first edition (november 2014), however, is a hardcover book (with a dust cover).
They make a nice pair.

BLUMENTOPF - GERN GESEHEN INSTRUMENTALS

This instrumental 3 LP version of Blumentopf's "Gern Gesehen" album got released as a teaser for the actual album.
It includes the track 'Macht Platz', with a Zappa sample all the way through the track.

TERRY BOZZIO & CHAD WACKERMAN

DW released Terry Bozzio's and Chad Wackerman's "Solos & Duets" on VHS tape in 2001.
The recording included  FZ's 'Black Page', performed as a duo.

Earlier today, I added the cover of the VHS release to the United Mutations Archives.

In 2004, the above video got released on a 2 DVD set, combined with a Terry Bozzio concert recording.

The cd, "Shake, Rattle and Roll", fits over the cover.

The mag included :

  • FZ on the cover,
  • FZ on the contents page,
  • "This Is What I Call Genius", a 6-page article by Malcolm Dome (also talking to Terry Bozzio and Adrian Belew)
  • "Zappa Lives Again", a 6-page article by David West (also talking to Ahmet and Dweezil Zappa)

LFANT - S/T

  • lfant: s/t
(2019, cd, france, dur et doux dd-040)
Gulheim Meier (Poil !!)'s LFant project released a first album for Dur Et Doux.
In the meantime, the physical copy arrived at the United Mutations headquarters.

Difficult to physically fit in on the CD shelves, but sounding fresh and exciting.

TABOR RADOSTI - JOYCAMP

  • tábor radosti: joycamp
        (2015, cd, austria, klanggalerie)

Initially released in 2001 and re-released by Klanggalerie, Tábor Radosti's "Joycamp" album is something special. Discogs calls it Czech Dark Ambient and that sounds pretty accurate as the Czech spoken parts add a lot of mystery.
New to me, received as a gift and very impressed.

Tábor Radosti is a fantastic band from the Czech Republic. Their debut album came out in 2001 as a self-released CDR that is now totally impossible to find. Tábor Radosti have created a very unique sound that includes drone, voice, samples, but also beats and analogue instruments. Their visuals and lyrics are very much centered around occult themes, if you have ever seen them live you will have been stunned. Klanggalerie is now very proud to start a re-issue program for the first two albums. Many of you have probably not heard of them before, but it is time that they gain popularity outside of their home country. The vocals are spoken in Czech - to Western European or American ears there is a certain similarity to early Laibach, they share the same roughness, but Tabor Radosti also include electronic beats which again is reminiscent of present day Laibach. On this re-issue, we bring back the first album, but also updated artwork and some bonus tracks.

EDDIE JOBSON - THE GREEN ALBUM - THEME OF SECRETS

The Green Album/Theme of Secrets contains two of Eddie Jobson’s most highly sought after solo albums.
The critically acclaimed Green Album, with studio band Zinc (and guest Gentle Giant’s Gary Green), was originally released in 1983 and represented a creative updating of Jobson’s unique Progressive Rock vision. Theme of Secrets - from 1985 - was a groundbreaking electronic music album performed entirely on the Synclavier Music Computer.
All tracks have been remastered for this special 3-disc 2CD and high-fidelity blu-ray audio re-release (24bit/96k stereo).

Eddie Jobson has recorded and performed with Frank Zappa, Roxy Music, U.K., and Jethro Tull. He also recorded two solo albums. The first one as Zinc, the second one as Eddie Jobson.
Both albums have now been remastered and re-released by Globe Music.
Beautiful package and the albums sound superb. (the CD's, that is. Haven't checked the blu-ray).

ROB CUCCURULLO - BY WAY OF CANARSIE

  • by way of canarsie
    by rob cuccurullo
        (2019, book, usa, private release)

Rob is Warren Cuccurullo's brother.
Warren was part of Frank Zappa's band, co-founded Missing Persons and eventually even played guitar in Duran Duran.
As Rob's book is about living in Brooklyn with the family, parts of this book are about Warren and also about Frank Zappa's visits to the Cuccurullo's.
Too bad Rob didn't include the pictures of Zappa's visit that he showed on facebook.
Still, nice reading, spectacular story and glad it turned out fine with Rob (getting addicted, serving in the army, being arrested,...).

I got my copy from Amazon.

THE ARISTOCRATS - YOU KNOW WHAT...?

Album number 7 (!!) by The Aristocrats.
Great band.
Technical wonderment.

Haven't looked at the DVD yet, but the album sounds amazing.
