MUFFIN MEN TOURDATES


Somehow I thought this was going to happen in October.
Couldn't have been more mistaken.

DAVID BOWIE - WELCOME TO THE BLACKOUT (LIVE LONDON '78)

"Welcome To The Blacout (Live London '78)" captures Bowie in concert in June/July 1978.
The album was recorded live by Tony Visconti in 1978 and was produced by David Bowie.
The vinyl (3 LP) version got released at record store day earlier this year. The 2 CD version is even more recent.

The show included a lot of great songs, AND features Adrian Belew on lead guitar.
During the presentation of the band, David mentions the bands that the came from : "Sean Mayes from Fumble", "from Hawkwind, Simon House", "from Todd Rundgren's Utopia, Roger Powell", and "later Frank Zappa, Adrian Belew".
Great.

Just listened to 'Station To Station' again. With Adrian doing the train whistles and stuff. Wow !! An intro of four minutes !!

This is one great album.
Recommended.


THE WRONG OBJECT

Rumor has it that The Wrong Object might be presenting their Zappa tribute album during the Mosae Zappa Festival, November 23 - 24, 2018...

The band did confirm that they will be doing a gig at L'An Vert in Liège, BE, on November 16...

Dweezil Zappa is in the neighbourhood with his Zappa Plays Zappa band.

The Antwerp gig was simply amazing.
We arrived home on Monday from Zappanale were we saw a bunch of fine shows.
Then we saw Dweezil on Thursday, showing how his dad's music has to be performed.
We are the lucky / happy people.

CAMEMBERT - SCHNÖRGL ATTAHK

After a first EP that got released in 2009, Camembert got their first album out in 2011.
On the Italian Altrock record label.

The album was recommended to me by Chato during my Zappanale visit and he couldn't have been more right.
Camembert produces instrumental experimental jazz-rock. The ensemble makes fine use of marimba and brass and has (to my ears) listened to a lot of Zappa music.

Essential listening.
Saturday, Sept 22, the band will perform at the Freakshow Artrock Festival.

I go right to Vancouver after leaving Europe to work with Devin Townsend on demos for his upcoming album. I feel real privileged to be a part of this new phase of Dev's career and am really relishing the thought of the album sessions in a couple of months. He's been sending me TONS of stuff he's working on and it's just incredible, how creative and prolific he is.

Bryan Beller is also phenomenally creative, if not quite so prolific, but his next album IS a double-album opus so it's definitely worth the long wait since Thanks In Advance came out (TEN YEARS AGO, goodness gracious). I'll be jumping right into the studio with him when I get back from working with Devin – and it will be Double Time studio with Jeff Forrest engineering, same location where Dust Speck and Nonkertompf and all sorts of my stuff was recorded back in the day. Always a pleasure to go back to the scene of those crimes (I use the term lovingly) and do stuff with Jeff, and I'm excited to add my input to the intricate latticework Beller is creating.

But really I came here to say that if you haven't listened with headphones to all of 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 by Midnight Oil recently, just, I mean, just DO IT. NOW.

ZAPPANALE #29 FLASHBACKS

Wednesday was our second day in Hamburg.
Pretty nice place.
Beautiful shops, restaurants and bars (and lots of record stores).
Two of the record stores were complete filled with dj / remix / drums 'n bass / experimental stuff.
I didn't recognize one name in the shelves. Except maybe for DJ Koze.

The main event, however, was the concert at the St Katharinenkirche.
Inventionis Mater, expanded to a trio for the occasion, performed among other pieces, the music of Frank Zappa.
Special guest Napoleon Murphy Brock added vocals and saxophone to some of the tunes.

An acoustic setting and a fine choice of compositions.
I liked it.
I saw a lot of people with recording gear walking around, so a recording should turn up soon.
(Viva Zappateers !!)

MULATU ASTATKE

We continue our work with the “Godfather Of Ethio Jazz”, Mulatu Astatke, with the first official reissues of his early classics ‘Afro Latin Soul’ Volumes 1 and 2 from 1966, recorded as The Ethiopian Quintet.

The albums were the first experiments in Astatke’s pioneering sound, fusing Ethiopian cultural music with Afro Latin and jazz forms. “I have always felt a deep connection between Latin and African music,” he explains. “I travelled to Cuba and listened to their musicians; the tempo, rhythm and feeling was very similar to different African forms.”

Astatke would start to perfect his Ethio jazz sound on his later album for Worthy in 1972, ‘Mulatu Of Ethiopia’ (STRUT129) but the two volumes of ‘Afro Latin Soul’ stand as important recordings documenting his early career.

Steve Allen from the 1963 tv-show where Frank Zappa played his bicycle concerto.

ZAPPANALE #29 FLASHBACKS

It's the best festival that I know. It's as simple as that.
I get to enjoy some of my favorite artists. Some play the music of Frank Zappa, some don't.
And I get to hear bands that I have never heard of before. And they're amazing.

One of the biggest surprises was Alex's hand.
They used to live in the States, but moved to Berlin, Germany.

Next, The Residents are pleased to report that their new album, ‘Intruders’, has been completed and is now being prepared for release. Of course, we’re here to hype it, but it really is a remarkable record, and, dare we say, the work of a refreshed Residents. Eleven songs in all, each of them framed within its own vaguely paranoid soundscape, and featuring several guest contributors old and new. It seems the album will be available in your usual favourite formats, alongside some special offerings from our friends at Psychofon too. ETA is currently sometime around October, so watch the skies for an official announcement via Cherry Red and MVD.

And lastly, a reminder that the ‘I AM A RESIDENT!’ album will be released commercially worldwide on August 24th. There’s the regular 2CD version, featuring the IAAR suite and a selection of hand-picked cover versions of all your Residents faves, alongside a very special vinyl edition featuring even more exclusive fan versions. As you probably know, The Residents were overwhelmed by the standard of material submitted by almost two hundred fans for this project, and were moved to produce a remarkable and enduring suite in return. The results may be weird, but it’s an essential addition to The Residents’ canon.

Yeah, they have a canon. Get used to it.

There’s more of course – always more – including ‘Commercial Album’ and ‘Eskimo’ pREServed news – but that can wait. For now, The Residents hope you enjoy ‘The Brickeaters’ and wish you all the best in trying to understand the ‘I AM A RESIDENT!’ and ‘Intruders’ records.


A NOVEL BY THE RESIDENTS


The Brickeaters is an absurdist buddy movie of a story featuring a very tall and young internet content screener teamed up with an aging career criminal whose primary companions are an oxygen bottle and .44 Magnum. After a short crime spree cementing their unhinged partnership, they work together to prevent a middle-aged lottery winner from polluting the LA water supply with massive amounts of fluoride. Their adventures unfold via a wholly unreliable alcoholic narrator desperately avoiding the reality of spousal abandonment.


THE SONICS - UNRELEASED

This 1980 "Unreleased" album by The Sonics collects material from some rare 7" records as well as some indeed unreleased studio material.
It includes their version of 'Any Way The Wind Blows' (Frank Zappa) from 1967, but also a fine version of 'Diddy Wah Diddy' (W.Dixon).



BURNT WEENY SANDWICH

Earlier this month, The Mothers Of Invention's "Burnt Weeny Sandwich" got re-released.
On 180 g vinyl. Comes with the poster.

This was the second Zappa album that I discovered, the first one being "Weasels"...
Both from the local library...
Must have been 1980.



ITZA UCHEN - (THEY'LL) MIX YOU UP / LASSITUDE

This little 7" might well be the first recording that features Pierre Vervloesem.
Playing the electric bass guitar.

Next week, Pierre will be playing the electric bass again. With Flat Earth Society.
There's a gig scheduled at The Gentse Feesten, but the band will also be playing at Zappanale !!




MAMARONECK HIGH SCHOOL STAGE BAND - SIDE GLANCES



Jazz and rock classics performed by a high school band.
Here's the Mamaroneck High School Stage Band.
Next to some original material and some Beatles classics, "Side Glances' includes FZ's 'Peaches En Regalia' in an arrangement of Joe Boerst,, and the 'Hairy Medley', which in fact is 'Little Umbrellas', 'It Must Be A Camel' plus 'Son Of Mr. Green Genes', also arranged by Joe Boerst.
Very fluent. Great dynamics. And an excellent percussion intermezzo during 'Son Of Mr. Green Genes'.
Superb !!

ALTERNATIVE TV - SPLITTING IN 2

This "Splitting In 2" Alternative TV compilation album includes the band performing Frank Zappa's 'Why Don't You Do Me Right?'.
It got previously released on the 1978 "The Image Has Cracked" album.

A.S.H. PELIKAN - FALSCH AGEBOGEN



German rocker A.S.H. Pelikan has been making music since the early '70's. In 2008, A.S.H. started releasing a series of retrospective albums.
As A.S.H. used to play a lot of coverversions, a lot of them can be found on these albums.
Album number 6 in this series, "Falch Abgebogen", includes A.S.H. performing two Frank Zappa tunes : 'More Trouble Every Day' and 'Big Leg Emma'.


FREAK KITCHEN - NOBODY'S LAUGHING

Around the time of the release of "Move", Freak Kitchen's fifth album, a promotional CD got released in France.
"Move" was the first album with the new line-up. Guitarist Mattias IA Eklundh was still part of the band, but Christer Örtefors (bass) and Björn Fryklund (drums) had only recently replaced Christian Gronlund (bass) and Joakim Sjoberg (drums).

The CD presented and audio and the video clip for 'Nobody's Laughing', plus a medley of all the "Move" tracks.


LISA LESTANDER, JONAS KNUTSSON, MATS ÖBERG - SÅNGER FRÅN NORR

Lisa Lestander recorded a number of traditional folk songs from the upper northern part of Sweden.
With the aid of jazz saxophonisht Jonas Knutsson and keyboard / harmonica genius Mats Öberg, she produced a beautiful album.
Very nice.

The album got released in 2014 on the German WestPark Music label.

MATTIAS IA EKLUNDH - FREAK GUITAR

Mattias IA Eklundh released his first solo album in 1999 (not counting his Mr.Libido album from 1996).
As you might know, "Freak Guitar" included a dizzying version of Frank Zappa's 'The Black Page'.
The Japanese edition of "Freak Guitar" had a slightly altered album cover (pictured above), plus one bonus track : 'Our Man In Baijing'.



STUDENTORKESTERN TONGANGARNA - EGEN BLANDNING

I remember talking to Lennart Gustafsson at the Zappanale festival quite some years ago. He told me about this recording and he sent me the necessary data (band, album title, year of release, country and label) so that I could start looking for it.

It took me quite some years to find this particular release, but I finally did.
Too bad that Lennart isn't around anymore. He passed away a couple of years ago.
Thank you, my friend. I'm happy to have known you.

Tongangarne is a student orchestra from Sweden.They're like a brass band, but do include percussion and a guitar. They perform rock and jazz classic in a rather straight-forward way.
There are two medleys to be found on "Egen Blandning". The first one, 'Popen', includes the theme of Frank Zappa's 'I'm The Slime'.
I like it.

As I just added a picture of Charles Ulrich's "The Big Note" to the United Mutations Archives, I thought it was only appropriate to add the cover of the very first book that was written about Frank Zappa as well.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - ELECTRIC MONSTER ROCK SHOW

Jean-Luc Ponty released his (Frank-Zappa-produced) "King Kong" album in 1970.
Later the same year, one of the tracks, 'The Idiot Bastard Son', got released on the "Electric Monster Rock Show" sampler.

The latest album in the series of re-issues by The Rudy Schwartz Project is the 2013 "Full Frontal Klugman" album.

Prog ensemble 41POINT9 is premiering their second video titled “These Four Lands” from their forthcoming album “Mr. Astute Trousers” on Sonic Perspectives! The band has two albums being released internationally on September 21, 2018. One is the brand-new sophomore release “Mr. Astute Trousers” and the other is a remixed and remastered version of their debut album “Still Looking For Answers.” The band has been busy creating a series of high quality concept videos to help get word about the album out.



THE RUDY SCHWARTZ PROJECT - DON'T GET CHARRED... GET PUFFY!

Released in 1992 on the Musical Tragedies record label (from Germany, remember them?).
Re-issued in 2012 with a different album cover on the DC-Jam record label as a CD and as a download.
And finally re-released a couple of weeks ago as a CDR by DC-Jam / Kunaki.

If you need one album by The Rudy Schwartz Project (and you do, believe me), this is it.

Not only does it include quite a lot of weird and catchy tunes, the album also presents one of the best coverversions of a Frank Zappa composition that I have ever heard.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - AUDIO CD-7

Audio Magazine (from Greece) used to include a free CD with the magazine.
I don't know if they still do this. I don't even know if the magazine still exist, but the person who compiled these little albums (in 1995 !)  did have a good taste in music.

CD number 7, from the April 1995 issue, included Harmonia's 'Barking Playful Sandwich' which is a mix of 'T'Mershi Duween' (F.Zappa), 'Igor's Boogie, Phase Four (O.Odori), 'Aerobics In Bondage' (F.Zappa) and 'Lumpy Gravy' (F.Zappa)

Originally issued on the "Harmonia Plays Zappa" album (from 1994).

Here's the Harmonia Ensemble live, in 2010, with their adaption of 'Alien Orifice'.

Meanwhile, planning for The Bizarre World of Frank Zappa 2019 tour is ramping up considerably. The core band for the tour has got me, Joe Travers, Scott Thunes, Ray White, Robert Martin and Ed Mann. Holy cow.



NEW ALBUM BY SOFT MACHINE




Hidden Details is a new studio album of Soft Machine, recorded at the late great Jon Hiseman's Temple Studio in Surrey, England, last December 2017, and it will be released in September 2018 on MoonJune Records (North America; on CD and HD Download), on John Etheridge's Dyan Records (UK/Europe on CD, and iTunes), and on Vivid Records (Japan), exactly 50 years since the release of the band's 1968 debut album The Soft Machine. Limited and highly collectible vinyl edition of only 200 coloured vinyl (orange, blue and tour edition orange & blue marbled) will be released on the Dutch label Tonefloat, on September 8, 2018.
