WE ARE THE OTHER PEOPLE

Classifying a couple of recent issues of the Arf Dossier, had me pick up "We Are The Other People", the book that celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Zappanale Festival a couple of years ago.

Compiled by Dieter Jakob, Burkhard Schempp and Robert Riedt and published in 2014, this still is a superb book to browse through.

Artwork by none other than Helmut King.

FRANK ZAPPA - MUNICH 1980

This semi-official release of a radio broadcast captures the last concert of Frank Zappa's 1980 Spring tour.
July 3, 1980, live at the 'Olympiahalle' in Munich, Germany and broacast in the King Biscuit Flower Hour series.
I discovered this superb show on a Zappa bootleg vinyl album way back in the days when I hadn't heard about tape trading (long before CDR's or Zappateers...).
Stored in my memory forever. Together with the excellent "Teenage Rocking Combo" bootleg set from the Paris show of the same tour.

FRED FRITH & HARDY FOX

Hardy Fox, composer for The Residents, says :

"It began in Big Sur. Fred Frith and I, sitting naked on two small wooden blocks, legs crossed, hands resting on our knees. A small clearing on a rise above the Pacific Ocean, waves pounding a steady beat against the rocks far below. I had arrived at the Zen retreat the previous afternoon and Fred was one of the first people I ran into. I’d met him in more formal situations at Ralph Records, but we had not previously hung out socially. Fred was the current artist-in-residence at Esalen, and had been there nearly six weeks. He’d invited me to join him in an "air bath" the next morning and so here we sat, bathing in the morning sea air. The glow of Fred's skin made me sadly aware of how much time I spent in a windowless studio. I could easily pass for an albino. Fred was not big on talking, so we sat in quiet contemplation. But soon I became aware of a humming sound and realized Fred was singing quietly to himself accompanied by the rhythm of the waves. I whispered, "What are you singing?" He apologized and whispered back that he was making up melodies. I might not have brought clothing with me, but my Walkman was a constant companion and asked if it were okay to record him. He said I could."

Released on CD in 2016 and made available on Bandcamp earlier this month.

THE TWO-BIT QUARTET

Before the Zappa Early Renaissance Orchestra, and before I played bass in Pojama People, I was making Zappa recordings at home as the Two-Bit Quartet. I figured out and recorded Cletus in 2010.

DWEEZIL ZAPPA UPDATE

Dweezil Zappa's "Live In The Moment Part II" is ready.
The digital version has been sent to the participants of the support campaign and the CDs have been shipped as well.

THE RESIDENTS PRESERVED

Next up in The Residents' Preserved series are "Fingerprince" and "Duckstab / Buster & Glen".
As with the previous two, both albums will be rereleased as remastered 2 CD sets, featuring lots of bonus material.

https://www.cherryred.co.uk/product/residents-fingerprince-2cd-preserved-edition/

https://www.cherryred.co.uk/product/residents-duck-stab-buster-glen-2cd-preserved-edition/

JOE SATRIANI - WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

Guitar virtuoso has just released "What Happens Next".
The digital version was made available a little while ago, but in the meantime, the CD's have shipped as well.
Together with Chad Smith (drums) and Glen Hughes (bass), Joe recorded 11 tracks.
More straight-forward as his previous albums. Less 'alien'.
But still a very fine album.

There was a bit of a fuzz when people saw that Joe will be touring with Mike Keneally, Bryan Beller and Joe Travers on his G3 tour, instead of Chad Smith and Glen Hughes with whom he recorded "What Happens Next", but I don't mind.

FRANK JOHNSON

The next project by The Residents will feature reworked coverversions of Rez' tunes.
It will be called "I Am A Resident".
Frank Johnson might be part of this.

JAY ROZEN - NAKED SINGULARITY - KILLER TUBA SONGS V.2

Tubist, composer and improvisor Jay Rozen has toured and recorded with Anthony Braxton and with Wadada Leo Smith, to name just two.
He also was at the Zappanale festival in Bad Doberan, Germany in 2002 where he performed with Candy (Frank's little sister) Zappa, Nigey Lennon, John Tabacco and Mike Keneally.

In the liner notes, Jay adds : "This particular festival was notable due to the dedication of a statue of Zappa in the town square. I smart-talked my way into having my arrangement of 'Sofa #2' (reworked for tenor sax, bari sax and tuba) played during this dedication. Try to imagine my excitement at playing my arrangement of my favorite Zappa tune played in front of hundreds of rabid Zappa fans while many ex-Mothers of Invention and other Zappa ex-band members stood behind us. These included Don Preston, Bunk Gardner, Jimmy Carl Black, Roy Estrada, Napoleon Murphy Brock, Ike Willis, Mike Keneally, among others. Definitely a high point of my career."

On "Naked Singularity - Killer Tuba Songs v.2", Jay Rozen shows a glimpse of his musical output: commissioned pieces, works for tuba, and more.
He even included recordings of three Zappa pieces : 'Sofa #2', 'Idiot Bastard Son' and 'Peaches En Regalia', featuring John Tabacco on various instruments and noises.
Great stuff !!

An excellent album.
Issued by Naxos / Composers Concordance Records, a label that you have to watch (and hear).

Here's Jay Rozen with the Low Frequency Tuba Band, playing some familiar sounding song.

FIRST CHERRY RED RESIDENTS RE-ISSUES HAVE ARRIVED

Pretty amazing.
Both "Meet The Residents" and "Third Reich 'N Roll" have been re-issued in the best possible way.

On CD, sounding great, in a beautiful package, and with lots of bonus material.
Can't do it any better than this.

  • the residents: meet the residents
        (2018, 2cd, uk, cherry red records nrt002)
Remastered re-issue of the mono and stereo edition of the 1974 album, the 1972 "santa dog" single, and lots of previously unreleased bonus material

  • the residents: the third reich 'n roll
        (2018, 2cd, uk, cherry red records nrt002)

Remastered re-issue of the 1976 album, various singles, and lots of previously unreleased bonus material

FRANK ZAPPA & THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION - BACON FAT - LIVE AT THE ROCKPILE '69

I'm not trying to promote these semi-official releases, but I do admit that some of these look nice and sound even better.
This "Bacon Fat" release (taken from the 1969/02/23 Toronto concert) is such an album.
So go to Zappateers and download the show for free.

BOBUCK'S "NINETEEN-SIXTY-SEVEN" AVAILABLE ON BANDCAMP

Released on CD by Klanggalerie last year,
and available on Bandcamp since Jan 12, 2018.

Hardy Fox adds:
I found the 50th anniversary of the Summer of Love - 2017 - far too great of a temptation. I was in my early 20s, in San Francisco, stoned out of my mind in 1967. But much of that music stayed with me. I really wanted to do a cover album of music I often heard live at the Fillmore West, or coming from a flat-bed truck in Golden Gate Park. It is easy to romanticize youth, but let me tell you, 1967 was not a normal year. I am so glad I was in the middle of it. -HF

RIZA ARSHAD / SIMAKDIALOG

A message from MoonJune Records

RIZA ARSHAD
Indonesian Pianist, Icon of the Indonesian Music Scene (1963-2017)

Dear Friends in Music

Exactly one year ago, a very dear longtime friend of mine, suddenly passed away. RIZA ARSHAD, Indonesian pianist, was the second most important artist in development of MoonJune Records, immediately after the iconic British saxophonist and Soft Machine alumni legend Elton Dean. While Elton was the one who hugely influenced me to start out of blue and pout of nothing my record label back in 2001, as well my booking activities, Riza Arshad introduced me to the wonderful world of Indonesian music. In 2007 I have released first of 4 albums of the seminal Indonesian band simakDialog, a brainchild of the late great Riza, which is also thee first of 20 albums of Indonesian musicians on my label. Riza was an extraordinary man and an extraordinarily gifted visionary artist. We had two unreleased albums that we wanted to release in 2017: another live album of simakDialog from their scone USA tour in 2014, and his Rhodes trio album with Ernest Tibbs on bass guitar and Chad Wackerman on drums. Eventually these albums will be released sometimes in the near future. Riza wanted his music to be heard, and his music deserves to be heard. In the near future, MoonJune plans to release a tribute album featuring Riza's music, performed by some of his friends and colleagues and by some of the iconic musicians who appreciated his extraordinary talent.

To remember my dear friend Riza Arshad, MoonJune is offering FREE DOWNLOAD of all simakDialog's albums (Patahan, Demi Masa, The 6th Story, Live At Orion) and for those who prefer physical format, 4 CDs are available for a symbolic price of $20 plus shipping.

https://simakdialog.bandcamp.com/merch/4-simakdialog-cds-for-20-shipping

https://simakdialog.bandcamp.com/

This generous offer is valid until January 31st.

THE WORD

The Word.

PRINCE

Here's two books that I picked up at a clearance sale.

  • Prince - De complete geïllustreerde geschiedenis
        (2017, book, nl, librero)
    by Jason Draper
This one's nice.
Beautiful pictures and a chronological overview of Prince's albums.

  • Prince - The Icon Series
(2017, book + dvd, nl, rebo productions)
A bit less convincing.
The book does have some fine pictures, but I expected more from the DVD.
The news report after Prince's demise, the low quality video clip material,... A missed opportunity.

CHEER-ACCIDENT - SALAD DAYS

To celebrate Cheer-Accident's appearance at the RIO festival, last September, Skin Graft Records re-released two albums in a remastered version : "Trading Balloons" and "Salad Days".

Originally issued on CD in 2000, "Salad Days" has been issued on both the CD and the vinyl format.

This is not the most accessible album of the Chicago-based band. Co-produced by Steve Albini, the listener is offered rock rhythms and progressive grooves mixed with dream-like psychedelic escapades.
The album ends with 'Salad Day', an 18-minute opus that will have you glued to your headphone.

Multiple listening sessions required.
Recommended listening !!

Merrell Fankhauser’s career began in the 1960s with the instrumental surf rock group The Impacts whose hit album Wipe Out is now revered as one of the era’s best surf rock albums. He later formed two other bands, Merrell and The Exiles and H.M.S. Bounty, before embarking on a formative move to the island of Maui in 1973 with his group MU. Later projects found Fankhauser collaborating with everyone from drummer Gary Malabar of Steve Miller Band and John Cipollina of Quicksilver Messenger Service.

KING GIZZARD & THE LIZARD WIZARD

Their fifth album in 2017 !!
"Gumboot Soup".

Australian band King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard will be doing a number of concerts in the UK next February.

DISCO BISCUITS UPDATE

Earlier this week, I heard through the FaceBook Grapevine that The Disco Biscuits have not just one recording ("Encephalous Crime") with Zappa's 'Pygmy Twylyte' on it, but also a more recent one : "Trance Fusion Radio Broadcast 02".

As it happens, the latter of these, has recently been issued on vinyl, together with "Trance Fusion Radio Broadcast 01".
As a 3 LP set.

http://blog.nugs.net/thediscobiscuitstfr/

How about that?

FROM THE ZAPPA VAULTS

Alex Winter says :

This clip is from the very last performance of the original Mothers of Invention in Ottawa CA 1969. I can only share a very short taste of it, so don’t start throwing digital tomatoes at your screen, but it’s super rare and it made my heart skip a beat and I’m sure it will for you too!

LIVE PHISH DOWNLOADS

Here's two more "Live Phish Downloads" albums that belong in The Others Of Invention section :

In concert in Hollywood, August 8, 2011, the band performed Frank Zappa's 'Peaches En Regalia' in their first set. Track 5 on this 3 CD set.

About one week later, Phish played a completely different set at the Outside Lands Festival in San Fran. They did, however, play 'Peaches En Regalia' again as the fifth song on their setlist.

Both albums are available as download and as CDR-on-demand.

TONY LEVIN - WORLD DIARY

Tony Levin (King Crimson, Peter Gabriel) released his first solo album in 1995 : "World Diary".
MoonJune Records recently made the record digitally available through bandcamp.
(CD copies are still available as well.)

"World Diary" is an extraordinary album.

Check out 'Chasms', his collaboration with L.Shankar !

Tony performs with Shankar, violin and vocal, in a room in the Atlantic Hotel in Hamburg, duets with King Crimson colleague Bill Bruford at Bruford's house. Tony plays electric double bass in the Hotel Royal Monceau in Paris with Levon Minassian on doudouk. Others with whom he collaborates on the CD are: Ayub Ogada - nyatiti & vocal, Brian Yamakoshi - koto, Bendik - tenor sax, Nexus - a five man percussion ensemble, Manu Katche - drums, and Jerry Marotta - drums.

THE RESIDENTS' WARNER BROS ALBUM TO BE RELEASED ON RECORD STORE DAY

From an intervieuw with Homer Flynn :

M[m]: What’s next lined up in this reissue series?
HF The plan, for now, seems to be going through the catalog chronologically, releasing several titles a year until all the major album have been re-released. As you mentioned Meet the Residents and The Third Reich ’n' Roll are set for release in January; Fingerprince and Duck Stab are currently in the works, although I’m not sure if a release date has been set or not. Also, The Residents’ legendary Warner Bros Album, the “audition” tape they sent to Warner Music in 1970 is set for release as an LP on Record Store Day in April, 2018.

PAUL HUBWEBER - 213

"213" sheds a light on the musical world of Paul Hubweber.
Experimental music / improvised jazz.
Housed in a beautiful cardboard booklet, one gets a CD with 18 tracks that feature Paul on trombone, on guitar, or on vocals. And maybe even on loop station(s)?
Beautiful.

As Paul also is the mastermind of The Yellow Snow Crystals, a couple of Zappa references fit this anthology perfectly. Track number 5, 'YSCATS', or 'Yellow Snow Cats' has German lyrics over Zappa's 'Crew Slut', 'Punchin' Pigs' includes various Zappa riffs, and 'So Far' has a link to FZ's 'Sofa'.
Very nice.

This release came in a very limited run of 50 signed and numbered copies.
If you can get hold one, you really should not hesitate.
Recommended listening !!

HARDY FOX

Hardy Fox is the composer for The Residents.
He is no longer using the Charles Bobuck moniker.
So far, starting December 27, he did put up three tracks on Bandcamp :

'Wink', with a nice oriental touch.

'Duet',

'Paying The Sun', a left-over from the "What Was Left Of Grandpa' (2015) album.

CUNEIFORM RECORDS

The Year 2018 will mark a New Era for Cuneiform Records.

Steve Feigenbaum is the brains behind Cuneiform. He is in charge of A&R (curating Artists and Repertoire), in addition to overseeing all business and legal matters, including sales, distribution, manufacture, licensing for media and more. For 2018, Steve will take a year sabbatical to determine what direction the label could or should take to be viable again in the future. Because sales of recorded music in every format - digital, cd, lps - have dramatically declined for everyone in the music industry, it is no longer feasible for us to run a record label in the same manner as we have for the past 35 years. For Cuneiform, 2018 will be a year to rethink, retool and evolve the label.

During his sabbatical, Steve will continue to maintain Cuneiform’s catalogue, oversee digital and physical album sales, pay twice-yearly artist royalties, oversee licensing and other legal matters, and keep Cuneiform Record’s official website updated, including updating the Tour page for concerts. But, while Cuneiform released an average of 15 albums a year for more than three decades, no new releases are currently scheduled. Cuneiform will remain in its current offices in Silver Spring, which it shares with Wayside Music, an internet-based record store that Steve founded in 1980 and continues to run with Simon Mertz and a part-time assistant.

KAPSALON - S/T

Nate Wooley, Jozef Dumoulin, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten and Teun Verbruggen.
Experimental, improvised music.
Recorded live at Jazz Middelheim in 2017.

Released on LP by Rat Records.

VANTOMME - VEGIR

Dominique Vantomme's latest project, aptly called Vantomme, features Michel Delville on electric guitar and Tony Levin on bass (and chapman stick).

Lovely.
Out on the MoonJune Records label.

YOWIE - SYNCHROMYSTICISM

  • yowie: synchromysticism
(2017, cd, usa, skin graft records)
Every once in a while, you get to hear a band that blows you away.
Yowie is such a band. They're a trio from St.Louis and they've just released their third album (on the Skin Graft Records label).

Intense.
Experimental
Math rock.
Right up my alley.

"Synchromysticism" presents five tracks. The total album clocks around 33 minutes.
It will have you searching for your breath.

Available from Mandaï.
www.mandai.be

CHEER-ACCIDENT - TRADING BALLOONS

Skin Graft (the comic book company that also produces records) has just released a remastered version of "Trading Balloons", the CDR / private release from 1999.
The album presents one song.
One 52-minute composition.

Surprising, varied, bombast but also explosive, the piece does generate both a progressive rock and a contemporary classical feeling.
Fascinating.

ZAPPACAST EPISODE 35

For Episode 35 of the ZappaCast - The Frank Zappa Podcast, Scott Parker talked to Ahmet Zappa.

They discussed the recent Halloween release, the possible future of the material from the vault, Gail's role, Frog's With Dirty Little Lips, Dweezil and the trust, the upcoming Zappa pin, Ahmet's view on Zappa-related projects, and much more.

You can listen to it here:

THE DISCO BISCUITS

I just added data for two more albums to the United Mutations Archives in the Others Of Invention albums- section.
http://www.united-mutations.com/z/frank_zappa/fz_ooi_albums.htm

It's two albums from the Disco Biscuits.
Both albums are still on my Want List as they're rather hard to find.

The first one was already listed, but without the album cover and extra info. It's the first edition of "Encephalous Crime".

The re-issue (from 1999) does no longer include 'Pygmy Twylyte'.
It's a pretty fine album (the second edition, that is), but I'd rather have that first edition...

The second album that I added is called "Trance Fusion Radio Broadcast 02". I only heard about this one a couple of days ago when someone mentioned it on FaceBook.
Not that old, but also out-of-print (and rather rare), so that's good for the second Disco Biscuits album on my Want List...

As the band does play a couple of Zappa tunes live from time to time, it's no wonder that a radio broadcast included one of these. "Trance Fusion Radio Broadcast 02" also includes 'Pygmy Twylyte'.

That's what makes collecting bands that have recorded Frank Zappa's music so much fun.
It's a never ending story.
And you get to listen to some interesting bands.

Here's Pygmy Twylyte by The Disco Biscuits with special guest Ed Mann,
September 10, 2016 at the Great North Music and Arts Festival

THEO AND THE WRISTBAND - ZAPPANALE 28

Romanian band Theo And The Wristband opened the 2017 edition of Zappanale.
Not the warm-up party on Wednesday, but the actual festival on Thursday.

I had never heard of them and they were a pleasant surprise.
They played a couple of original songs but all the rest was Zappa: My Guitar, Pygmy Twylyte,...
Fun opener.

Made available on DVDR in very limited quantity.

Check them out on Youtube :

KAZUTOKI UMEZU KIKI BAND - ZAPPANALE 28

A band performing at the main stage at Zappanale gets the opportunity to be recorded on video. The band gets the recording and can use it whenever they want for their own purpose, but they do have to agree that the video crew makes 20 copies to be sold during the festival (to cover expenses).
I like the idea. And I like the DVDR's even more.

Top band at the most recent Zappanale, Kazutoki Umezu's Kiki Band played an astonishing set.
I had the impression that Kazutoki Umezu was quite happy as well as he tossed his hat into the audience.

Kazutoki Umezo: alto sax
Natsuki Kido : guitar  (Bondage Fruit)
Takeharu Hayakawa: bass
Joe Trump: drums

STUDIO DAN - ZAPPANALE 28

Daniel Riegler's Studio Dan took part in edition numberr 28 of the Zappanale festival. It was their second appearance in Bad Doberan.
Dispite the terrible rain, the ensemble did a great job.
The audience was soaked, but kept on watching.

Released on DVDR in a very limited run of 20 copies and made available at the festival.

PIERRE VERLOESEM ON BANDCAMP

Guy Segers, owner of the (late) Carbon 7 record label, has been releasing various recordings through Bandcamp. All of these have Guy (bass) or Carbon 7 (label) as a common factor.

Last week, Guy re-released Pierre Vervloesem's "Home Made" album. Pierre's solo debut (from 1994). It's an album that everyone who stumbles on this blog from time to time should check out.
The album ends with a respectful minute of silence, entitled '04/12/1993'.

happy new year !!

Wishing you a healthy and happ 2018 !
