NEW ALBUM BY TODD RUNDGREN

  • todd rundgren: white knight
        (2017, cd, ??, cleopatra records)

TODD RUNDGREN SPANS GENERATIONS AND GENRES ON ‘WHITE KNIGHT’ OUT MAY 12 ON CLEOPATRA RECORDS

ALBUM FEATURES GUESTS ROBYN, TRENT REZNOR, DAM FUNK, DARYL HALL, DONALD FAGEN, JOE WALSH, BETTYE LAVETTE, JOE SATRIANI + MORE

Los Angeles - Todd Rundgren – the iconic songwriter, recording artist, producer and innovator – will release his newest album ‘White Knight’ on May 12 via Cleopatra Records. The 15-track collection features a dynamic range of original songs and deft studio work by Rundgren, with an incredible array of guests to match, including Dam Funk, Donald Fagen, Daryl Hall, Bettye Lavette, Robyn, Joe Satriani, Joe Walsh, and others. Recently Pitchfork unveiled album track “That Could Have Been Me” featuring Robyn.

The songs on ‘White Knight,’ all Rundgren originals or co-writes with some of the album guests, range from hip-hop flecked funk and dystopian synth rock to soaring ballads and crisp power pop. Album opener “Come” swirls with oscillating rhythms and sweeping layers of synths. More squiggling synths drive the feature with Daryl Hall, “Chance For Us,” giving way to a rich sax solo and a punchy, squelching bass line. Robyn soars on the pop anthem “That Could Have Been Me,” while Todd and Donald Fagen harmonize on the timely political jab “Tin Foil Hat.” “‘Cause the man in the tin foil hat / is sitting on the throne tonight / it kinda feels like a coup e’tat / but its gonna be great, tremendous, amazing and all that.”

"It's easy to get used to playing to your own audience, even if you are absorbing and experimenting with new ideas. I wanted to collaborate not just for the musical possibilities, but also to play for new audiences and expose my fans to the range of artists I enjoy working with." – Todd Rundgren

Says the New Yorker: “Over the course of his four-decade career, Rundgren has a been a prog-rock pioneer, a blue-eyed soul vocalist, an A-list producer, and above all, a restless presence, never willing to settle.” In addition to his own trailblazing catalog, Rundgren has produced critical landmarks and commercial smashes for artists ranging from New York Dolls, Patti Smith, and XTC, to Meatloaf’s ‘Bat Out Of Hell’ (with sales exceeding 43 million), Cheap Trick, and Hall And Oates. He has composed the music for a number of television series, including Pee Wee’s Playhouse and Crime Story, and been at the forefront of technology in the music industry for decades, whether hosting the first interactive television concert in 1978, offering the first commercially available music downloads, or launching the first direct artist subscription service.

Todd Rundgren will tour throughout 2017 with headlining dates kicking off in late April. Tour dates below with more to be announced shortly.

THE SUN RA ARKESTRA IN LEUVEN

Last week, at 'Het Depot' in Leuven, BE, Sun Ra's Arkestra (under the direction of Marshall Allen) was my guide to outer space.

From cool jazz to avant garde.
No need for chemical substances. Just music.

Here's some nice pictures (by Gieke Merckx) that I found on the net.

GODS & MONSTERS WITH JEFF BUCKLEY - LIVE IN BROOKLYN 1992

'Radio show' release.

Gods & Monsters with Jeff Buckley, live at St. Ann's Church, Brooklyn, New York on 13th March 1992

At a tribute concert to his late father in April 1991, Jeff Buckley met and impressed Captain Beefheart's former guitarist Gary Lucas. They began to collaborate on songs, and before long Buckley had joined his band, Gods And Monsters.

This remarkable set combines standards and songs they'd written together, including an early performance of the classic Mojo Pin.

Originally broadcast on FM radio, it's presented here together with background notes and images.

Fabulous music in an astonishing package : "The Unheard Tales Of... Helga Schröder".

Out on vinyl. Comes with a CD in the same package.

BRETT CLEMENT'S PAPER ON ZAPPA'S CHORD BIBLE

As mentioned on Zappateers :
Brett Clement wrote a paper on Zappa's Chord Bible.

http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/musa.12083/epdf

On the subject of Zappa's Chord Bible :

Zappa On Jazz From Hell
By Frank Zappa
Music & Sound Output, March 1987
Jeff Spurrier

Beltway Bandits is a really old one. The rhythm is a round, the parts are staggered. They're staggered so they interlock with each other. A simple rhythm becomes more complex, times four, when you copy the same part and stagger it a certain number of beats. The harmony that's used is all derived from this book called The Chord Bible. Every composer has notes, chords and rhythms that he likes to hear. Some people keep it all in their head and some people will jot down little sketches. Several years ago I made a classification of all of my favorite chords plus the order in which I preferred to hear the pitches in the chords arpeggiated. It's all broken down from three-note, four-note, five-note, six-note, eight-note chords. The chords are in different classifications, starting with those chords that have a minor second as the uppermost interval, major second, minor third, blah blah blah blah blah, all the way down to the fewest chords that have the minor ninth as the upper interval of the chord. There are real dense voice chords and chords that cover four or five octaves. There's a whole variety in the book. The harmony in "Beltway Bandits" is derived from Chord Bible harmony, and usually it's four- and five-note harmony. There are a couple of seven-note chords in there also.

THE TONE STONIES - NEEDLE IN THE TONE ARM

Released in 2016 as a download album and more recently as on CD, "Needle In The Tone Arm" is The Tone Stonies second album.
No original compositions on this disc, but one does get an excellent set of classic rock songs. Excellent versions, if I may say so.

  1. rocks off (m.jagger, k.richards)
  2. women vs men (david byrne)
  3. friday on my mind (g.vanda, g.young)
  4. i am waiting (m.jagger, k.richards)
  5. i'm gonna booglarize you (baby) (d.van vliet)
  6. it ain't me babe (b.dylan)
  7. heroin (l.reed)
  8. journey to the center of mind (s.farmer, t.nugent)
  9. these boots are made for walking (l.hazlewood)
  10. take your clothes off when you dance (f.zappa)

Talking Heads' 'Women vs Men" includes Sade's 'Why Can't We Live Together', Donnie Vliet's 'I'm Gonna Booglarize You Baby' presents superb vocals with the roaring guitar, Lee Hazlewood's 'Boots' gets a slow version with a great bass line, and FZ's 'Take Your Clothes Off' gets a teen bop surf make-over.
Love it.

CHICKENFOOT - BEST + LIVE

One CD that presents 11 best of tracks plus 3 bonus live tracks, and a second CD with live material, previously available on the "Get Your Buzz On" blu-ray / DVD.

JOE SATRIANI - ROBIN DIMAGGIO - MUSIC WITHOUT WORDS

(released on November 2015)

World-renowned guitarist, JOE SATRIANI and United Nations Musical Director ROBIN DIMAGGIO, recently teamed up to compose the song, “Music Without Words”. The song was first unveiled at the June 30th “Annual Presidential General Assembly of the UN 69th Session Gala” in New York City after being co-written by the two exclusively for the special event. The Assembly and Gala featured world dignitaries as well as the Heads of States from nations across the globe.

Accompanying the song is a dramatic music video directed by Ramin Ouladi, Los Angeles-based director, cinematographer, and editor, who developed the video concept, a variety of images featuring children from around the world. The goal of the song was to “touch the hearts of seven billion people, a call to humanity, a message of love,” according to SATRIANI.

A portion of all proceeds raised from downloads and streams will be donated to support UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund.

Available on iTunes.

CHICKENFOOT - DIVINE TERMINATION

ENSEMBLE MODERN PERFORMED THE MUSIC OF FRANK ZAPPA IN BERLIN 2017 02 22

The Ensemble Modern, conducted by Jonathan Stockhammer, recently did a concert in Berlin, performing the music of Frank Zappa.

I wasn't able to attend but, fortunately, my Zappateer friends made an audience recording for everybody to enjoy.

Just beautiful.
This brings back nice memories of seeing FZ and the EM in Frankfurt almost 25 years ago.

FLAT EARTH SOCIETY AT THE RED STAR LINE MUSEUM

A couple of months ago, Flat Earth Society did a remarkable concert. The band provided the music / soundtrack to a silent documentary at the Red Star Line Museum.
It was superb.

I was told that FES would be making a recording of this soundtrack and that the combination soundtrack + documentary would become part of the collection of the Red Star Line Museum. Visitors would be able to watch the documentary and to listen to the soundtrack at all times.

More recently, I learned that the soundtrack will be out on CD as well. That's excellent news as far as I'm concerned.

For those of you who want to experience the documentary screening with FES playing the music live, two dates have to be kept in mind :

April 20 - Red Star Line Museum, Antwerpen (S.S. Belgenland)
April 21 - Red Star Line Museum, Antwerpen (S.S. Belgenland)

VARIOUS ARTISTS - SONIC SCENERY - MUSIC FOR COLLECTIONS

About ten years ago, the Natural History Museum Of Los Angeles invited various artists to create and to contribute a musical piece that fits the art collection of the museum.
The Sun Ra Arkestra, led by Marshall Allen, contributed three pieces. One improvised, untitled piece and two performances of Sun Ra compositions, 'Mayan Temples' and 'Space Chord'.
All three recordings were made at the museum, in the hall of Ancient Latin America.

Next to the Arkestra, the album presents pieces by Autolux, Nels Cline, David J, Stephen Hartke, Jon Hassel, Languis, Matmos, Nobody And Mystic Chords Of Memory, and Ozomatli.
Lots of great music to be discovered.
Liner notes (and local audio system) intro by Esa-Pekka Salonen, music director of the LA Philharmonic Orchestra.

The Arkestra performances sound great, with Marshall Alen on his EVI (electronic valve instrument)!

I love the idea of adding music to the visit of a museum. Not that it has to be blasting out of the speakers at the museum, but that you get it as an audio option.
I guess it's a bit like Flat Earth Society adding music to silent movie / documentary at the Red Star Line Museum in Antwerp BE. And that was a fabulous sensation.

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART - - - ELECTRICITY 1967 - 1968

New 'radio show' album by Captain Beefhart.

"Electricity 1967-1968 is a collection of very rare recordings from Don Van Vliet AKA Captain Beefheart. The tracks were recorded live at MIDEM Pop Festival, Cannes Beach, France, at Frank Freeman's Dance Studio, Kidderminster, UK and Allegro Sound Studios, Los Angeles, CA. Track one, "Electricity" (1968 Live) Van Vliet's adaptation of the Howlin' Wolf vocal-construction device is in full frontal view, as is the evolving Magic Band rhythmic concept and French/Drumbo's incredibly responsive manifestation thereof as he shadows Van Vliet's singing; an outstanding version of one of the most innovative songs in the proto history of avant-rock. "Kandy Korn" (live) is structurally perhaps the most adventurous of the lot, it's interlocking parts peering past any jam-o-philic indulgences at the martial art to come."

THE WIZARDS OF OOZE

Adding data, days before the Wizards Of Ooze catalogue is to be re-released.

Here's a picture of the first 12" that got released by Vibes Ahead Alliance, later to be renamed Wizards Of Ooze.
Also released on CD EP around the same time.

STUFF.

First track from the upcoming Stuff. album.

TRABALHADORES DO COMMERCIO

The Trabalhadores Do Commércio released their "O Milhor Dos Trabalhadores Do Comércio" in 1995. Apparently, the album did well as it got re-released in 1996 already.

The re-issue had two bonus tracks, one of which was the band doing Frank Zappa's 'Bobby Brown'.

I recently found a copy of "O Milhor...".
Unfortunately, is the first edition. Probably the rarest one of the two, but without the Zappa tune...

I do have the album cover to share.

Here's what the band sounds like:

GOOD GOD

Good God recorded Frank Zappa's 'King Kong' and released it on their 1972 album.
It features a certain Robert Martin on french horn.

Also out on CD.

IT'S ALL IN A DAY'S WORK FOR MY MAILMAN

Upon my return from London last Thursday, I found a nice surprise in my mailbox.

True, I was in the UK but I was too early for the upcoming Muffin Men tour as it only kicks off in April.
Also true, the surprise is all about the upcoming Muffin Men tour.

I'll be happy to tell you more about the content, but first let me say that I appreciate my mailman's flexibility :-)

(Address blackened by me. You all know where I live, right?)

ARF-DOSSIER NO.91

Keeping up with traditions, the German Arf Society publishes the Arf-Dossier every three months.
A fanzine dedicated to Frank Zappa.
On paper.
In this latest issue, editor Peter Görs is wondering if there is still need for a paper version in this time and age of internet and social media.
He even says that he's calling it quits and that the only way for the fanzine to continue, is to find a new editor.
I understand the reasoning.
Personally, I like to browse through the pages but I admit that the 'news-value' is rather limited.
Maybe the format has to be re-thought.
Make each issue a photo-special. About a Zappa concert, about Zappanale, about another Zappa-related festival,...

It would be nice to get to issue #100...

LES BOUCLES ABSURDES - UN NOUVEAU PIED POUR NOËL

Last week, I received a small wooden box. The box had "Les Boucles Absurdes" written on top of it and it presented a USB stick. Never afraid to put a memory stick in my pc, I plugged it in to find "Un Nouveau Pied Pour Noël", the brand-new album by Les Boucles Absurdes.

Les Boucles Absurdes is Jean-Pierre Jonckheere and Pierre Vervloesem.
"Un Nouveau Pied Pour Noël" (A New Foot For Christmas) is their fourth release and it's superb.

The album presents six tracks. Every track is some sort of loop. (Les Boucles Absurdes = Crazy Loops).
Floating guitar tones, extraterrestrial voices, sampled synthesizer tones, the crackling of a vinyl album, contemporary classical percussive sounds and sirens, pulsing bass lines, a Gregorian choir, ...
"Un Nouveau Pied Pour Noël" will take you on an amazing journey.

I love it. I'm hearing new things all the time.

I don't have a clue on how they made it. Would love to know if they would be able to produce this live.

The digital / download version is out on the Off Records label:
