JOY AS A TOY - MOURNING MOUNTAINS

  • joy as a toy: mourning mountains
(2017, cd, bel, humpty dumpty records)
Joy As A toy is Gil Mortio (bass), Clément Nourry (guitar) and Jean-Philippe De Gheest (drums). "Mourning Mountains" is the trio's third album and it sounds really good. I really need to check out their previous albums. With album titles like "Valparaiso" and "Dead Like A Dodo", this can't go wrong.

You might be familiar with some of Gil Mortio's musical output as he is/was part of Kings Of Belgium with Pierre Vervloesem. Gil also performed and recorded with Bruno Vansina and with Teun Verbruggen on various occasions.

Anyway, "Mourning Mountains".
The album presents a beautiful mix of pop, rock, exotica and cinematic soundscapes.
"Mourning Mountains" has 8 tracks and all of them are impressive.

Check them out, and find the theremin !!

THE A-BONES - DADDY WANTS A COLD BEER AND OTHER MILLION SELLERS

Norton Records is an independent record label from Brooklyn, NYC. It was founded by Miriam Linna and Billy Miller in 1986. Next to garage punk, rockabilly and early blues bands, the label has also released some fine Sun Ra albums.
But let's get back to the subject.

Before Norton Records, Miram Linnan and Billy Miller were the duo behind The A-Bones, a (Brooklyn-based) garage band.
In 1992, the band recorded Frank Zappa's 'The World's Greatest Sinner'. It was put on a 7" by the Australian Giant Claw record label, with 'Shanty Tramp' on the B-side.
Jump to 2004 and the band has already released four albums and two EP's, all on the Norton label, when the label releases "Daddy Wants A Cold Beer", a compilation of singles and unissued material.

Nice.

WIZARDS OF OOZE - THE DIPSTER

The Wizards Of Ooze are not to be confused with The Wizards of Twiddly, the British band that once was 3/5 of The Muffin Men and that toured and recorded with Kevin Ayers.
No no no. The Wizards Of Ooze were a Belgian acid jazz ensemble that released their first album as Wizards Of Ooze in 1994. And this album was called "The Dipster".
Before Wizards Of Ooze, there was Vibes Ahead Alliance, but that's another story.

When I first heard about Wizards Of Ooze, the were compared to Jamiroquay and to Frank Zappa. Had to check that out and wasn't disappointed.

Wizards Of Ooze released three albums between 1994 and 1999. They called it a day in 2001.
Next March, the albums will be re-released together with a 'new' album with various demos and mixes. That'll be fun...

VARIOUS ARTISTS - SUPPER'S READY

So while we're on the subject of one of my favourite Zappa keyboard players, Tommy Mars, I added the data for "Supper's Ready", the Genesis tribute that got released by Magna Carta / Road Runner in 1995 to the United Mutations archives.

"Supper"'s Ready" has all different bands and line-ups performing early Genesis material.
One of these, John Goodsall with Michael Zentner, features none other than Tommy Mars on keyboards.

Here's the track :

FREEBO - THE END OF THE BEGINNING

Freebo's musical bio reads is quite impressive. He started his musical career in early seventies and he recorded and toured with Bonnie Raitt, Buddy Guy, Jerry Donahue, Paul Barrere,...
It took him until 1999 to release his first solo album, "The End Of The Beginning".

This is a fine album for a lazy Sunday afternoon.
Lots of familiar sounding names on this disc : Albert Lee, Paul Barrere, Bonnie Raitt, Sam Clayton, Valerie Carter,...
The album also features Tommy Mars on one track, Mike Miller on another track and Albert Wing on two tracks.

The below 'Trouble' track features Tommy Mars on synth strings.
Not really represantative as the rest of the album is quite bluesy and features a lot of guitar work, but it does feature Tommy Mars.

TRIANGULAR BENT - S/T

I think I first mentioned TriAngular Bent about six or seven months ago. TriAngular Bent consists of Don Preston (piano, computer, electronics and gong), Jeff Boynton (cello and custom bent circuit instruments) and Philip Mantione (computer, custom software, electronics and guitar). July 2016, the trio released their first album through Bandcamp. More recently, the recordings were released on CD as well.

If you haven't heard them yet, check them out on Bandcamp.

The trio produces an interesting mixture of electronic and acoustic sounds. The result is a beautiful search, or exploration.
This is great. Improvised music !
Higly recommended !!

Check it out, and buy the album. I received my copy signed by Don Preston : "Live Long and Prosper". I can only return the message. Live Long And Prosper, Don" !

Terry Bozzio Solo Project 1991:
I've never finished it over the years until now, because of technology problems (computer not fast enough to mix - midi and sync problems, and not enough track space to do overdubs etc!) but I always liked the compositional approach to the drum parts! I look at it as a missing link between guitarshop, and melodic drumming & the ostinato! The period after recording the drums included doing the lonely bears & polytown and changing to Mapex, then DW as well.
I have a new track to release. It's called “Advent”. It's the first in the Terry Bozzio Solo Project 1991 series. I went into Jeff Burton’s garage studio (he is the son of Elvis Presley's famous guitarist James Burton!), with Missing Persons' Live Sound Engineer (who has been my dear friend from the very beginning of that band), Gary Epstein. We recorded my drums on Jeff's 16 track 2” machine.

We managed to get 9-10 tracks down with a beatbox for a hybrid sound. With no idea of what it would ultimately be, I tried to improvise composed beats along with the beat box and create different sections, based on what felt was natural to do next. I had the concept of overdubbing the music on it later.

One thing we tried right away was to float in some vocal stuff I had done with Patrick O'Hearn in his studio at previous session a year before. The result was very good and inspired me to do more with other previous recordings. At that time I was living near Jeff in Studio City and had converted my garage into a little studio too. I called it White Rooms. I had a 3M 79 16 track 2” machine (bought from Gary Wright!) as well, and some early midi equipment and started to drag the midi overdubs via a sync tone from the 3M. A very slow and tedious process at the time!

But the magic was that 2 of my previously recorded vocal tracks, just done in free space up in Oregon w/ Pat, using my vocoder, synced up unconsciously, but perfectly with 2 of the drum track's structures! So it was meant to be.

I'm still not finished with all the tracks, but I have 4 almost ready to go, and coming soon! This is the first and it's called “Advent”. It means “a coming”. Burning drums, Bulgarian Folk Singing, and driving sequencer parts. I hope you like it!

THE WEST COAST POP ART EXPERIMENTAL BAND

In 1967, L.A. based band The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band released their second album. It included a coverversion of Frank Zappa's 'Help, I'm A Rock'. The track also got a 7" release.
The 2001 reissue on the Sundazed label not only presented the original album, but also the mono single mix of the Zappa tune.

THE UNIVERSE BY EAR

Taken from the upcoming album 'The Universe By Ear'
(Czar Of Revelations, March 2017)

Video/Edit by Pascal Grünenfelder & The Universe By Ear

Where is it written that there may only be one Big Bang? In Summer 2015, to the day 13,8 billion years after the first one, The Universe By Ear have initiated another big boom. Since then basses tear black holes into space, drums dart like unstoppable comets through zero gravity and guitars paint stripes of fire on the horizon. Three bold and daring musicians fom Basel/Switzerland have gartered for this mission, to lead rock to places no one has ever set foot before: a complex, colourful, suprising, hard and melodic landscape in a cosmos, in which improvised freefall and structured form coexist peacefully. Fasten your seatbelts, because we are off to explore The Universe By Ear! The debut-single 'Seven Pounds' was released in May 2016. The new selftitled debut album will be out on March 24th 2017 via Czar Of Revelations.

PATRICK LEONARD AND FRANK ZAPPA

Patrick Leonard's WIKI page,
over at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrick_Leonard,
mentions :

Leonard gained entry into the music business with late 1970s Chicago-based pop rock band Trillion, which featured future Toto singer Dennis "Fergie" Frederiksen on lead vocals. The early days of his career also featured short stints as a keyboardist in Frank Zappa’s band in 1976 and The Allman Brothers Band in 1980.

I did find a link to L.Shankar, but the collaboration with FZ is new to me...

Anyone?
