For the fifth year in a row, Le Micro Festival will take place in the mid-rural, mid-urban surroundings of Espace 251 Nord, within the area of Saint-Léonard (Liège), next August 1st and 2nd.
Five years of existence need to be celebrated! On the agenda, twelve different bands will make you travel through experimental disco, psychedelic pop, tribal indie or even electronic country! A WARREN CUCCURULLO UPDATE

Last Friday, Warren Cuccurullo did a Q & A session on Facebook.
Too late to participate, but you can still check out the page to read things like how he met Frank Zappa...

and for those who aren't on Facebook:
i used to go to alot of shows on the east coast of the us...14 or more per tour... i got to know some of the crew members & bodyguard...one evening after a felt forum show the soundman saw me outside & asked if i could watch his roadcase for a few minutes...i said no problem & he came back about 20 min. later saying thanks but you know how frank is, & i said, no i don't know how frank is...he was like 'you never met frank??" he said tomorrow after the first show he'd 'test the waters' & see if i could get a chance to meet my ultimate idol...the greatest modern day composer himself! this was a dream. couldn't be anything else...well; i guess the waters were calm & warm...µ

ZU - GOODNIGHT CIVILIZATION

I've mentioned this new Zu EP a couple of times already and I have finally managed to put the data in the United Mutations Archives.
Amazing music in an impressive package (a one sided vinyl 12" album; the other side has a drawing on it !!)
Plus an excellent coverversion of The Residents' 'Easter Woman'. What else does one need?

THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION - FREAKING OUT IN 1969

  • the mothers of invention: freaking out in 1969!
        (2014, 4lp + 3cd -bootleg, ??, ??)

Following the trend that was set by "King Of Prussia" and "Europe 1980", "Freaking Out In 1969!" is another bootleg box that combines vinyl and CD.
This time, the box contains recordings from Toronto and Appleton, both from 1969.
400 copies on 2 blue and 2 red vinyl discs, plus the same recordings on 3 CD's.
Food for collectors.

CHAD WACKERMAN - DREAMS, NIGHTMARES AND IMPROVISATIONS

During the recent Band From Utopia tour, Chad Wackerman had brought along a beautiful reissue of his 2011 "Dreams, Nightmares and Improvisations" album.
It's a heavy 12" cardboard box that includes a double vinyl (with fold-out cover) album plus a digipack version of the CD. The above picture shows a(n upper left-corner) signed copy of the box.

The album itself is excellent and features Jimmy Johnson on bass, Allan Holdsworth on the guitar and Jim Cox on keyboards. Yep, that's Jim 'Frankie's Coming To Town' Cox.

HAES & BLAES - S/T

Danish band Haes & Blaes recorded their version of Frank Zappa's 'No No No' on their 1976 debut album.

Another fine addition to the Others Of Invention, artists recording the music of Frank Zappa.

THE STUDIO DAN DISCOGRAPHY

I've mentioned it earlier today: my biggest surprise at the Zappanale 24 festival was Studio Dan.

http://studiodan.weblog.mur.at/en/

Studio Dan was founded by Daniel Riegler in 2005 for the JazzWerkstatt Wien’s first festival. The ensemble consists of 25 members who perform in various permutations, depending on the project. The group operates on the borders between diverse subgenres of contemporary music: improvisation, new music, jazz and rock, to name only a few.
Studio Dan is the only Austrian large ensemble belonging neither to the jazz big band mainstream nor the strictly interpretive contemporary chamber music culture. Instead, the ensemble has developed a new musical method organically combining composition and improvisation, exploring beyond the bounds of simplistic, easily marketable categories.
In 2008 Studio Dan was chosen as the “stage band” for a six-month residency in the Vienna jazz clubPorgy & Bess and became an integral part of the Austrian music scene. In 2009, the ensemble released its debut (double) CD, “Creatures & Other Stuff”, which subsequently won the German Record Critics’ Award. In 2010 a second album followed, featuring singer Nika Zach and entitled “Things”; the CD release tour included a performance at JazzFest Berlin. In 2011 the ensemble received a grant from the Ernst-von-Siemens Music Foundation for their collaboration with Elliott Sharp. Their third album, “Dekadenz”, and the associated internet art project (www.dekadenz-cd.at) were released in 2012. In the same year, Studio Dan premiered “Fanfare III” for 16 musicians distributed throughout the performance space, featuring soloist Michel Doneda. 2013 saw the premiere of “Musik für 11”, a spatial-sound composition developed for the Arnulf Rainer Museum.
The Studio Dan albums have been added to the United Mutations Archives :

VARIOUS ARTISTS - ZAPPANALE 24 GOOD-BYE SESSION

Each edition of the Zappanale festival ends with a so-called "Good-Bye" session. It's sort of a jam where members of various bands and ensembles join on stage to jam a bit.
It's always a good occasion to see some of the special guests and invitées on stage once more.

Last year, the session followed the Pojama People concert which meant that bass, drums and mallets of Pojama People (Kevin Crosby, Glenn Leonard and Ali Bach) were at first joined by the guitar player of Z3 (Tim Palmeri), and later on by Albert Wing, Mike Miller, Robert Martin and Tom Fowler.
And yes, they played some of their favourite Zappa tunes.

If my memory serves me right, this was the first time that a "Good-Bye" session got recorded on video and was made available on DVDR.

GARGANTUA

Polish band Gargantua performed at Zappanale on 2012/08/02. The concert featured Robert Martin as special guest.

In 2012, Gargantua had released two album. A self-titled debut album, and a second one entitled "Kotegarda".

The concert was fascinating. The albums are excellent.
Data have been added to the United Mutations Archives.

Here's Gargantua at the RIO festival in 2011:

MASTER OF MAYA - REINCARO : DARK SIDE OF THE LOVE VOL.2

Russian duo Master Of Maya recorded Frank Zappa's 'Zomby Woof' and released it on their "Reincarno : Dark Side Of The Love Vol.2" album.
Zomby Woof. In Russian.

All seven tracks on this disc are covers: Zappa, Genesis, ELP, King Crimson and Led Zeppelin.

STUDIO DAN - ZAPPANALE 24

A lot of my personal memorable memories can be retraced to the Zappanale festival.
One of those events took place in 2014 when I enjoyed a concert of Studio Dan.

Named after an album by a composer that we all know, Studio Dan had already recorded four albums when they came to Bad Doberan.
For the occasion, the ensemble had rehearsed some Zappa material as well a a bunch of original stuff. To put it mildly, those who were there, were blown away.
When I talked to conductor / composer Daniel Riegler later that day, he told me that he had brought a bunch of CDs with him and that he had sold out.

POJAMA PEOPLE - ZAPPANALE 24

The inimitable Glenn Leonard and his lovely partner Ali Bach were the backbone of Pojama People.
Pojama People featured Ike Willis on vocals and guitar and the band toured on an almost yearly basis through Oregon and Washington, performing the music of Frank Zappa.

Pojama People performed at Zappanale in August 2013 and it was their last show as Glenn Leonard passed away a couple of weeks later.
The concert should have included Ike Willis, but he had some passport issues at the airport and couldn't make it in time.
Anyway, Glenn, Ali, Kevin and Ted did deliver a fine show.

Here's a youtube video that Glenn put up shortly after their Zappanale adventure:

COOGANS BLUFF - ZAPPANALE 24

There's always a video crew present at the Zappanale festival. The Arf Society (who organizes the festival) makes it possible for bands to get their show recorded on video. When that happens, it's not just the band that gets the recording, but a small number (20) of copies get sold during the festival.

The above picture shows the DVDR with the recording of last year's Coogans Bluff concert.

The below fragment is taken from this recording.

In 2012, Coogans Bluff released their "Poncho Express" album. One of the tracks on "Poncho Express" was entitled 'Beefheart'. Here's the official video clip:

JAMES LAWLESS & THE RATBASTARD ORCHESTRA - PASSED PROGRESSIVELY

One-man-band James Lawless has released some twenty albums the last couple of years. All through Amazon's cdr-on-demand service.
This "Passed Progressively" album is from 2011 and includes James' take on classics by Queen, Dream Theater, Led Zeppelin, The Cream, (but also Styx and Judas Priest) ... and Frank Zappa.

"Passed Progressively" opens with a slow version of 'What's New In Baltimore' and ends with a re-arranged version of 'The Girl In The Magnesium Dress'.

PIERRE VERVLOESEM'S DIGITAL SERIES

The Off record label is re-releasing all of Pierre Vervloesem's solo albums. Remastered and with bonus material.

Second in a chronological series of 11 digital only remastered releases (6 solo (5 augmented with bonuses, lives and remixes), 1 duo, 1 unreleased duo and 3 pots-pourris (with absolutely every tunes possible ever recorded by Pierre and never released)) and coming at the pace of one every month is the fabulous second solo album from Pierre Vervloesem: Fiasco (1996).

Check it out:

BLUE BROTHERS - RAUSGEH'N UND BESORGEN!

Party band the Blue Brothers, ot the Blue Brothers Rhythm 'n' Blues Revue, released an album entitled 'Rausgeh'n und Besorgen!" (Go Out and Deliver") around 1992. Although not mentioned on the tracklist, the album includes a three-minute version of 'Love Of My Life', segueing into 'Paul & Paula', the Hildebrand classic that Zappa re-wrote as 'Ned & Nelda'.
Party band, party album.
Not easy to find, though...

Another fine addition to the Others Of Invention:
