BLUES RECORD COLLECTOR PAYS RECORD PRICE FOR RARE TOMMYJOHNSON RECORD

Longtime Blues Record Collector Pays Record Price For Rare Tommy Johnson 1930 Blues 78 Rpm Record

Grants Pass, Oregon, Thursday, September 29th 2013:

Longtime Blues record collector and expert John Tefteller was the winning bidder at $37,100.00 for a super rare Blues 78 rpm record by Blues legend Tommy Johnson. This is highest price ever paid for a single 78 rpm Blues record and one of the highest prices ever paid for ANY record.

Bidding, on internet auction site eBay, was hot and heavy for the record, and stood at $16,800.OO until the final seconds when the price shot up to just over $37,000.00

The record, Tommy Johnson on the Paramount label from 1930, is one of only two known and verified copies. All other copies of this disc are presumed lost or destroyed. The two songs on this record "Alcohol And Jake Blues" and "Ridin' Horse" are considered masterpieces of the genre and Johnson is one of the Top Five legendary figures in early recorded Blues music, right along side Robert Johnson, Charley Patton, Skip James and Son House.

Tefteller, who has been collecting rare Blues records for over 40 years, already owns the only other known copy and has released the songs previously on one of his Classic Blues Artwork From The 1920's Calendar series...but this newly verified record is in vastly better condition than the other one and Tefteller says he "just had to have it." His original copy will be sold to help offset the cost of this new one and he says he is "going to remaster and re-release this new copy next year" for his 2015 Blues Calendar release. The Blues Calendars come complete with a 20 to 24 track CD that is included free with each Calendar.

Tefteller picked up his eBay win in person in South Carolina last Thursday. "I am happy to report to the record collecting world and admirers of great Delta Blues music worldwide that this newly discovered copy is in Excellent condition and will be able to be remastered to sound absolutely superb."  The seller was a local Columbia, South Carolina collector who found the record some years back at an estate sale. Tefteller says "He absolutely did not realize what he had and how rare it was until he put it on eBay. Within the first few hours of being listed on the auction site another collector tried to stop the sale by offering the seller $4,000.00 for the record. Fortunately, he let the auction proceed and I was able to win it in the final moments."

Tommy Johnson made a total of five records for the legendary Paramount label back in 1929 and 1930. He was a little known and very under appreciated singer/guitar player from Crystal Springs, Mississippi at the time. His legend and stature has grown tremendously over the years and his records, especially the Paramount's, are "Holy Grails" for Blues collectors. Johnson also recorded three records for the Victor label, which are desirable, but enough copies have survived so that they will "only" sell for $1,000.00 to $5,000.00 each. Johnson died in Mississipi in 1956.

This was the first public sale of a Tommy Johnson Paramount 78 rpm record. Tefteller says he was "blown away" when he saw it listed on eBay and knew that he had to bid "very seriously" in order to acquire it. A total of 29 bids were placed during the auction with Tefteller's final bid being the winner.

"I can't wait to have it properly re-mastered and share it with the world" say Tefteller, who resides in Grants Pass, Oregon and deals in rare Rock and Roll and Rhythm and Blues 45's and 78's while maintaining what has been called by those who have seen it as "the world's best collection of Blues records and memorabilia" and "The British Museum Of The Blues." Tefteller specializes in collecting the Paramount label, run out of a furniture factory in Port Washington, Wisconsin from the early 1920's to the early 1930's. Historians recognize Paramount as the most innovative and creative independent record label from that time and anything on the label is coveted by record collectors worldwide.

"The original masters for these recordings were all destroyed by World War Two. The only way we can hear them now is rescue the few remaining commercial copies which are in private homes," explains Tefteller. "We have to seek out the best or only copies that exist today and remaster from those." There are a number of legendary records by master Blues musicians of the time that have yet to be found. "Find me the missing Willie Brown or J.D. Short on Paramount label and you will see me writing REALLY big checks." Tefteller said.

SEBKHA-CHOTT & GALOOT FORMULA'S "THING FISH" PERFORMANCE AT ZAPPANALE

Sebkha-Chott's "Thing Fish" performance was one of the highlights of the latest Zappanale Festival.
A video recording of the concert was made available at the festival as a limited DVDR-release.
For those of you who weren't there, there's a set of Max Schindler's pictures as well.
All data have been added to the United Mutations Archives.

DANGEROUS KITCHEN UPDATE

At Zappanale, a number of concerts get recorded and released on DVDR in a very limited quantity. They're only available at and during the festival. As there are only 20 copies made, they normally sell out very quickly.

The second concert on the main stage was by German band Dangerous Kitchen.
Here's a picture of the DVDR.
It got added to the United Mutations Archives earlier today.

ZAPPOSTROPHE 125

Newsflash from the Czech Frank Zappa Fan Club.
Issue number 125 of their Zappostrophe zine has just been released.
Sounds like congratulations are in place.

LES BOUCLES ABSURDES - BOITE A TARTINES

I mentioned this new album by Les Boucles Absurdes a bit over a month ago in a short newsflash. In the meantime, I've received the shiny disc and I have played it like crazy.

"Boîte à Tartines" ('Brooddoos' in Dutch, or 'Bread Box' in English) is collection of catchy melodies. All of the melodies and its variations are repeated in loops (Boucles = Loops). Performed on guitar, synthesizer and tuned percussion.
Strange Music.
I love it.

Here's what my friend Harry replied after he had given the album a listen:
"having listened to the entire "Boite a tartines" album - let me say, it's one of the craziest albums I have ever listended to in my entire life:-) But I love it -  it's funny, crazy and beautiful. Fuck - forget about the Residents, Arthur Barrow and Marcoeur influences I mentioned in my Email earlier - it's beyond categorization. I heard a lot of Marcour references throughout the album on various pieces, but not him participating on the piece he is mentioned - it's probably just a "boucle" - the ringtones he offers on his site and that's on my mobile...But I heard a lot of Trent Reznor influences on the album as well. Some songs reminded me of "How to destroy angels" - Trent Reznor's side project...Goddammit,  we fucking Germans try to analyse things over...Analyzing is - auf gut deutsch: für'n ARSCH!"

DYLAN RYAN / SAND - SKY BLEACHED

  • dylan ryan / sand: sky bleached
        (2013, cd, usa, cuneiform)
Drummer and composer Dylan Ryan recruited Devin Hoffs (bass) and Timothy Young (guitar) to complete his Sand trio.
"Sky Bleached" is Dylan Ryan's debut album under his own name. It presents alternative, experimental rock, with a lot of jazz influences.
Nice.

Here's 'White Nights", one of the more jazz oriented pieces.

S.O.S. - LOOKING FOR THE NEXT ONE

  • s.o.s.: looking for the next one
        (2013, 2cd, usa, cuneiform)

British jazz trio S.O.S. formed in April 1973 and ceased to exist at the end of 1976. During that three year period, Mike Osborne, Alan Skidmore and John Surman only released one album as S.O.S..
This self-titled LP got released on the Ogun label.

Almost 40 years later, the Cuneiform Records label is bringing the band back into the spotlight with "Looking For The Next One", a 2CD-compilation of rare and previously unissued studio sessions and live recordings.
Actually, the second disc presents the July 1974 concert that S.O.S. did at the Balver Höhle Jazz Festival.

The trio was a saxophone trio, but as John Surman also played the synth and as Alan Skidmore could also handle the drums, multiple combinations were possible.
A synthesizer, saxophones and drums.
Worth investigating.

PANZERBALLETT - TANK GOODNESS

Rumour has it that metal-jazz band Panzerballett will be releasing a DVD of their recent Munich show.
Reason enough to bring their United Mutations entry up-to-date.

Exactly one year ago, Panzerballett released "Tank Goodness", their fifth album. Some might even call it their sixth release, counting the 2006 "Live At Backstage Munich" DVD. (if you happen to have / or know someone who has a copy for saly, let me know!).
Anyway, "Tank Goodness" is another fine release of the German quintet. Impressive original compositions, combined with amazing covers of familiar tunes. The album opens with 'Some Skunk Funk', the famous Breckers Brothers track, on which Randy Brecker is featured on trumpet, and it ends with Paul Desmond's 'Take Five'.
Now that I think of it, heavy metal be-bop would indeed be nice way to describe the music of Panzerballett.

Along the bumpy and multi-rhythmic ride, Mattias IA Eklund hosts on 'The Ikea Trauma', another breath-taking piece.

As Mattias IA Eklundh says in the liner notes: "I strongly believe Panerballett is good for the mental health of the planet. Respect and support these astounding, passionate young men. They deserve it. Oh boy, they do."

HUMBLE GRUMBLE - THE TOM AND GABOR SPECIAL

In 1996, the newly formed Humble Grumble quintet toured Switzerland and Germany and recorded two demos. The first one was called "The Golden Pile", and the second one "The Tom And Gabor Special".

These early recordings featured Tom Theuns and Gabor 'Humble' Vörös and the music is much more psychedelic / folk-oriented.
Ten years after the recording of "The Tom and Gabor Special" a limited edition was made available as a private release. With remarkable cover artwork by mortt.

ZAPPANALE 2013 - - - PART TWELVE : AUGUST 2 – DASCH2 // THE DANGEROUS KITCHEN // ALI N. ASKIN // SEBKHA-CHOTT

Recovering from Anton And The Headcleaners’ fabulous concert, I only caught a bit of Dasch2.
It sounded great.
Here’s Bazbo’s recording of one of their pieces.

After shaking hands with Reinhard Preuss again (after 20 years !) and checking out Freak Show Charlie’s Corner, it was time for the Dangerous Kitchen band.
Loved those vocals. If you ever want to start a band to perform Zappa’s music, keep it instrumental, unless you’ve got a vocalist like Holger Auer, that is.

'Montana' by Dangerous Kitchen, recorded by Luuk.

Next up was Ali N. Askin's band. On the small stage.
This was fabulous. After a couple of notes, I thought I was listening to Miles Davis' electric band, or to Weather Report. Superb!

Ali N. Askin: keyboard, compositions
Falk Breitkreuz: bass clarinet, soprano sax
Michael Weilacher: percussion
Eric Schaefer: drums and electronics
Oliver Potratz: double bass, electric bass

It Used to Start with a Volcano Loop * Piece #1 * Pinguins on TV * Welcome Back to Palestine * Ana's CV * Francis * Call of Beauty * Car Chase in the Desert

Another fine recording by Luuk.

I loved it and there were still two concerts to come.

Sebkha Chott had to do their show without Ike Willis, who had not been able to leave the u.s.a. due to a problem with his passport.
Too bad as they were performing the entire "Thing-Fish" opera. And just to show that things can always get worse, there were some major problems with the microphones that postponed the start of the concert with about half an hour...
Once that it had started, all of this was soon forgotten as the show was great. Out of this world. Best thing I saw all day.
I'm not saying that this was the best sounding concert, musically, but it sure was the best show.
Hard to believe that this was a one-time event.

The evening ended with Fried Dahn And The Brains at the Mystery Stage. From what I saw and heard while I was leaving the festival ground, they used Zappa speech samples and pictures during their concert. I was completely saturated and left.
What a day...

MATS / MORGAN BAND - RADIO DADA / THE TEENAGE TAPES

  • mats / morgan band: radio dada / the teenage tapes
        (2013, 2cd, usa, cuneiform)
Keyboardist, harmonica player and vocalist Mats Öberg and drummer Morgan Ågren are the Mats / Morgan Band.
Originally, the "Radio Dada" and "The Teenage Tapes" albums were released on the Swedish Ultimate Audio Entertainment label in 1998. The albums could be purchased at concerts, by mail, or in specialised shops.
The Cuneiform record label is bringing these and the other Mats / Morgan Band releases back to print.

The albums have been remixed and remastered and have been packed in a 2CD-set.
And there was still enough room for some bonus tracks.

If you're into the music of Frank Zappa, you should definitely check this out.
Essential listening !!

BLUE CRANES - SWIM

  • blue cranes: swim
        (2013, cd, usa, cuneiform)
Cuneiform released this brand-new album by Blue Cranes.
The quintet consists of Reed Wallsmith on alto saxophone, Joe Cunningham on tenor saxophone, Rebecca Sanborn on keyboards, Keith Brush on bass, and Ji Tanzer on drums.

Some might call this adventurous jazz or maybe even avant-garde new music. All that I can say, is that I like it.

Here's the album's second track: 'Everything Is Going To Be Okay'.
The perfect sample.

PIERRE VERVLOESEM HAS A NEW SOLO ALBUM OUT

Composer, producer and guitar player Pierre Vervloesem has a new album out !!

It's a digital-only release, entitled "Silence Science".

Pierre adds:
"The idea was (and still is) to use only one guitar and one bass connected directly to the computer without any additional effects but a reverb.
As for the guitar, I wanted to play the note one by one leaving them dying one after the other, but without limiting the number of overdubs.
The notes evolve like an animated movie, picture after picture. It was a fastidious work but I like that!"

JAZZENZO BENEFIT PARADOX TILBURG 2013 09 13

Jazzenzo is a dutch, on-line jazz magazine. As the support from the Dutch government disappeared, Jazzenzo is struggeling to survive.

http://www.jazzenzo.nl/

Last Friday, the Paradox jazzclub in Tilburg hosted a Jazzenzo benefit.

Three artists took part in this benefit : Rembrandt Frerichs, Corrie van Binsbergen and Yuri Honing.

Rembrandt Frerichs (piano) had brought Simin Tander (vocals) and Etienne Nillesen (drums) along. They played a fine set in which Simin Tander stood out.
Here's a recording of the Simin Tander quartet, live in 2010

Next up was Corrie van Binsbergen.
Solo.
During the little interview that Rinus van der Heijden did with Corrie, we learned that she is about to release her first solo album. Something to look forward to.
Corrie's set included a couple of improvisations, ending with her 'I'm Not Talking', her answer song to Zappa's 'Shut Up 'N Play Yer Guitar'.
Beautiful.

The evening ended with Yuri Honing and his band. Again, a beautiful concert, with a superb 'Space Oddity' !!
Here's a recording of the Yuri Honing quartet from Utrecht earlier this year.

I can't really tell you what the Extreme Music Library is about.
I think they offer music to professionals, like movie makers or companies who make advertisments.
Check out their website and be amazed:

Some of these compositions (or maybe even all of them) are also available on promotional CDs.
And now the fun part kicks in: Dweezil Zappa contributed a number of pieces to the Extreme Music Library, and these have been released on a number of CDs.

There’s all sort of visitors at Zappanale. Most people try to arrive one day in advance. It’s more relaxed and you do have the warm-up party to welcome you to town.
A whole lot of music freaks do, however, arrive on the first official day of the festival, the first day at the festival ground.
The biggest disadvantage for some of the people of this latter group, is that they usally arrive somewhere in the afternoon. In other words, they’re missing the first concert(s) of the day.
At Zappanale, that could be a pity.

Fortunately, the 2013 edition of Zappanale was more laid-back that its predecessor. The first band was scheduled to get on stage at 15:00 h.
I got there early. Early enough to go to the camping site and to stop at Steffen’s for a fine cup of coffee. Perfect.

This year, Swiss band Anton And The Headcleaners opened, and boy, they were good. Zappa-esque twists and turns, with the spotlight on the guitar. I loved it.
The set got spiced with a couple of Zappa tunes. I couldn’t have asked for more.
As my pal Steve said: “It’s like stepping on a motorbike and going for a ride. Love that drive.”

DR.CHADBOURNE

Standing in front of the closed door of the 'Bimbo Tower' in Paris, France, I noticed a postcard that said "Glöggerne & Martin Klapper: With Dr. Chadbourne".

It turned out to be a flyer for the Tonometer Music label.

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART'S TROUT MASK REISSUED ON VINYL

BENGT BERGER - BECHES BREW BIG

Swedish record label Country & Eastern is about to release "Beches Brew Big", another fine album by composer, drummer, producer and label manager Bengt Berger.

"Beches Brew Big" is an excellent follow-up to Bengt 'Beche' Berger's "Beches Brew". As the title of the new album suggests, the 5-piece ensemble has been extended to a nonet!
Livet Nord on violin and vocals, Jonas Knutsson on saxes, Mats Öberg on keyboards and harmonica, Göran Klinghagen on banjo and guitar, Thomas Gustafsson on saxes, Sir Thomas Jäderlund on vocals, saxes and clarinet, Max Schultz on vocals, banjo and guitar, Bengt Berger on drums, and Stefan Bellnäs on bass.
As one can expect from this incredible line-up, there is some great music to be enjoyed.

"Beches Brew Big" got recorded in concert in Stockholm and in Gothenburg last year, and it presents 11 highly enjoyable eclectic jazz or jazz-rock compositions.
And it's not just the compositions that are excellent, the soloing is superb.

Max Schultz's guitar sounds great in-between all the horns, and Mats Öberg's keyboard lines are great. If my ears don not deceive me, Mats even plays a (chromatic) harmonica solo and a keyboard solo at the same time in 'Babel Twist'. Amazing.

"Beches Brew Big" is a fine album. The following live fragment is from the same concert / recording session but it did not make the album. It will, however, give you a fine idea of what to expect from "Beches Brew Big".

LIL' GUITAR PIECES BY LILO

a message from LiLo /  HeLLo S.

HeLLo !

The first volume of my instrumental albums series "LIL' GUITAR PIECES" is ready.
On this occasion, I'll try a little experience... I won't put it for sale on the iTunes Store or any other plateform... I offer it to you.
But it still has a price: Its sale's price is... A Promise. By receiving it, you promise me to offer it to, at least, two friends of yours, who will also have to hold the same promise, and so on...
To receive it (Mp3 and .wav files) send a mail to: loswarn@yahoo.fr (you'll then be free to copy the album or give your friends this mail adress to receive it, which I'd prefer in order to follow its diffusion !). A CD version with visuals is on study, but it will be more expensive...

And here's fragments of LiLo's Zappanale concert from a couple of years ago.
