A LITTLE KE$HA UPDATE

Remember last week's "KE$HA and her Residents dancers" topic ?
Well, there's more.

Andrew added: KE$HA co-wrote and sang with Alice Cooper on 'What Baby Wants' from "Welcome To My Nightmare".

Here's a youtube video of Alice Cooper joining Ke$ha on stage, perfoming 'School's Out'.

And Nikolai found this nice picture from http://blog.cbuy.tv/klashing-keha-style/ :

Ke$ha is rocking a Vintage Frank Zappa T-shirt, Pink Pattern Mui Mui Pants (she own’s the full pant suit), and Cat Socks, walking outside Los Angeles’s Chateau Marmont.

Seems like a girl with good taste.

STRATOSPHEERIUS - ONE FOOT IN THE NEXT WORLD

Here's the official video for 'One Foot In The Next World' by Stratospheerius.

The track is taken from the excellent "The Next World" album.

  • Joe Deninzon: violin, lead vocals
  • Jamie Bishop: electric bass, vocals
  • Aurelien Budynek: guitars, vocals
  • Lucianna Padmore: drums

Here's a picture of "The Next World".

A MAGIC BAND UPDATE

In addition to The Grandmothers and The Banned From Utopia, concert promoter  GYGX (http://gygx.ch/) also represents The Magic Band in Europe.

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART'S MAGIC BAND
  • John French (Drumbo) - vocals, harmonica, sax, drums (on instrumental songs)
  • Mark Boston  (Rockette Morton) - bass
  • Denny Walley (Feelers Reebo) - (mostly slide-) guitar
  • Eric Klerks - guitar
  • Craig Bunch - drums (on vocal songs)
Drumbo co-founded the Magic Band in 1966, and he was much more than just it's drummer. Since the Captain didn't play any instruments, John French had a crucial part in composing the music: Up until the second to last Beefheart album "Doc At Radar Station" in 1980 he's always been the one who turned the master's wild ideas into actual songs and did the music-transcribtions for the other members of the band.

Rockette Morton made his debut in 1969 on the epochal "Trout Mask Replica". And on the four following albums Mark Boston was the Magic Man on bass and second guitar also.

Feelers Reebo was on board the Captain's ship with his guitars from 1975 until '78. On the Zappa/Beefheart double header "Bongo Fury" Denny Walley was even serving on vocals.

How to put this music into words, though? For sure it's rooted in the Delta Blues, but rampantly overgrown by a - psychedelic, experimental, avant-garde - Dadaism of sound which only allow rudimentary circumscription. It's certainly much easier to pick a few names from the endless list of Captain Beefheart's  great admirers. Be it Jack White, PJ Harvey, Nick Cave or Tom Waits (who, when called a Beefheart copy time and again, would gladly confess: "Once you've heard Beefheart, it's hard to wash him out of your clothes").

For more than twenty years this music was lying completely fallow. Don Van Vliet retired in 1982, dropped his Beefheart moniker and painted himself to a gloriuos second career in art. And with his illness progressing, it became obvious before too long that his life would remain in total seclusion until he sadly died.

Thus it wasn't until 2003, when new opportunities came about to re-witness these unique musical creations live - thanks to the resurrection of the Magic Band. For almost another decade however, this scpectacle was reserved to Britain's stages. There the reunited Beefheart originals caused thrills at Glastonbury or London's Royal Festival Hall, there they're selling out the houses to this very day. But last year the five Americans made it to continental Europe at last. And even though they had rarely played here in Beefheart's days, their first tour this side of the channel has been met by audience receptions of the kind that drove away any scepticism within the band. Just as it had happened to the professing Beefheart fan John Peel who originally wasn't fond of any comeback plans. Until he heard just how astonishingly Drumbo has mastered Don Van Vliet's way of singing - which prompted Peel to immediately invite the new Magic Band to his studio for a live recording.

"You don't need to have Beethoven on stage to play his ninth symphony". These were the words that John Peel found, praising the return of the Magic Band to his listeners in that show which turned out to become one of the radio legend's last. And us continental Europeans, we will get to enjoy the second visit of this truly magic band for it's ten year anniversary!

A RUDY SCHWARTZ PROJECT UPDATE

A little while ago, the DC-Jam Records label started re-issuing material by the Rudy Schwartz Project.
An excellent idea, if I may say so.

I remember discovering the music of The Rudy Schwartz Project and I enjoy listening to the various albums from time to time. The music sounds still as fresh, funny and weird as the first time I heard it.
In the meantime, DC-Jam Records has also released a couple of albums with new material. If you haven't heard those yet, better hurry over to the DC-Jam Records website (http://dcjamrecords.com/).

The most recent accomplishment by DC-Jam is the re-release of Günther Packs A Stiffy, originally released in 1995.
The album has been remastered and retweeked and will be available on iTunes real soon, if it isn't already.
I'm listening to a CDR-promo version right now (available for the first ten buyers who bought two RSP titles over at DC-Jam), and it does indeed sound great. There's two additional tracks, and one has been left out, making the album clock in at about 70 minutes.

Essential listening !!

Here's 'Frank', a tribute to you know who.
By The Rudy Schwartz Project.
From "Günther Packs A Stiffy".
The 1995 edition.

A picture of the CDR-promo has been added to the United Mutations Archives.

BANNED FROM UTOPIA UPDATE

Concert promoter  GYGX (http://gygx.ch/) represents The Banned From Utopia in Europe.

BANNED FROM UTOPIA
  • Robert (Bobby) Martin - vocals, keyboards, sax, french horn (Frank Zappa 1981-88)
  • Ray White - vocals, guitar (Frank Zappa 1978-86)
  • Ed Mann - xylophone, percussion (Frank Zappa 1977-88)
  • Tom Fowler - bass, violin (Frank Zappa 1973-75, 1978)
  • Albert Wing - tenor sax, flute (Frank Zappa 1988)
  • Morgan Agren - drums (Frank Zappa 1988)
  • Mike Miller - guitar
Frank Zappa is one of the twentieth century's most important composers. His effect on modern music is undeniable, his works the most voluminous and versatile of the entire generation rock - encompassing of course jazz as well as avant-garde, electronic, contemporary experimental and orchestral music. And the list of his collaborators and band members is a who's who of incredible musicians.Twenty years after his untimely death on December 4 1993, half a dozen of Zappa's most popular alumni are back on the mission to bring his multi-dimensional music to the world's stages again. Amongst them Zappa's longest running band member (Ed Mann), two lead singers who the great master also held in high esteem for many years (Bobby Martin and Ray White) and the man who opened Zappa's door for three (!) brothers of his before he went on to play with Ray Charles for well over a decade (Tom Fowler).

Alltogether they name themselves Ban(ne)d From Utopia, referring to the Zappa album "Man From Utopia" - but having played on almost every Mothers / Zappa album between them, they're performing classics from all eras. With their virtuoso creativity and deep history, Banned From Utopia authentically recreate the live Zappa experience, please the connoisseurs and convert the curious into dedicated fans.

They can do that on stage !

COPERNICUS - WORTHLESS

Performance poet Corpernicus (real name Joseph Smalkowski) states that nothing exists, the esception being the subatomic level. Everything you see and hear is just an illusion.
Copernicus says:

You are not your body.

You are not your mind.
Your are not you.
There is no you.

In 'What Is Existence', he continues:

Existence means that there is the capacity to remain the same fromon moment to the next.

Nothing can remain the same from on moment to the next.
The atoms in your blood are spinning at the speed of light.
The atoms in your bones are spinning at the speed of light.

and he concludes:

Nothing can remain the same from one moemt to the next. Nothing exists. Nothing can exist. Nothing will ever exist.

Copernicus' lecture is accompanied by a(n answering) backing vocal and by free jazz / improvised music.

Contrary to Copernicus' previous albums, the music is much more prominent. Nice.

The album ends with Copernicus' statement that everything is worthless. After saying that everything is an illusion, he dictates:

I must live with the awareness that all human endeavor is probably worthless.

I like this. A Copernicus album asks for all your attention. The reward is a fine journey.

OSTRICH VON NIPPLE - OH, FEARSOME! NIPPLE?

Ostrich Von Nipple, r0b0t and Shitty Bedford present "Oh, Fearsome! Nipple?".
It's a 15-minute epos that got released by the German Psychofon Records label.

The piece is inspired by Vel Fritt's "Oh, Fearsome! Head'".
The mighty web lets us take a peek at some pictures from the "Oh, Fearsome! Head!" performance.
http://ohfearsomehead.tumblr.com/

Imagine walking on a fair on a different planet. This is what you might see and hear.
I like it.

This mini-album comes in a limited release of 100 CDRs and the CDR itself looks like if it's made of vinyl: black on both sides, and with a label.
There's also a a collector's edition of 33 copies that includes a nipple-bag and buttons.
Check it out here:

DREAM THEATER IMAGES AND WORDS REISSUED ON VINYL

Dream Theater's "Images And Words" album, on which they sample Zappa saying 'Wait A Minute' has been re-released on vinyl by the Dutch Music On Vinyl label.

THE AVENGERS - ON A MISSION

Wowie zowie !! If you like the music of Joe Zawinul and Weather Report, Allan Holdsworth, Pat Metheny or Mike Stern (to name a few fusion icons), you're in for a treat.

The Avengers are Beledo (guitar and compositions), Adam Holzman (keyboards), Lincoln Goines (bass) and Kim Plainfield (drums).
All four of them are accomplished jazz musicians. Adam Holzman worked with Miles Davis in the late 80's; Lincoln Goines has recorded with Michael Brecker and Mike Stern; and Kim Plainfield's credentials include Bill Connors and Edgar Winter.
Beledo, the main composer and the leader of The Avengers, hails from Uruguay where he led progressive rock bands Maytreya and Siddhartha.

NIGEY LENNON & JIMMY CARL BLACK

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
http://www.muffinrecordsproductionsusa.net/

MUFFIN RECORDS SIGNS NIGEY LENNON TO EXCLUSIVE CONTRACT
First Release Will Be Jimmy Carl Black's Final Recording

AUSTIN -- Muffin Records Productions USA has inked an exclusive distribution contract with composer/producer/musician Nigey Lennon, label head Reinhard Preuss has announced. Muffin will handle distribution of digital downloads and physical CD's for the artist.

Lennon's first release on Muffin will be an exclusive digital download of her song "Stolen Cadillac", which features a duet vocal between the late Jimmy Carl Black and Candy Zappa. The song was originally performed at the Zappanale festival in Germany, and Jimmy Carl Black liked it so much he asked Nigey Lennon, who lives in New York, to send him instrumental tracks so he could add his vocal from his home base in Europe. Sadly, the song wound up being the last thing he recorded before his death in 2008. "I'm very proud that Jimmy liked the song as much as he did," says Lennon. The project was recorded in New York, Italy, and Los Angeles. Lennon arranged and produced the recording as well as creating and programming the basic tracks. Also appearing on the release are Jay Rozen (tuba), Laura Kass (fiddle), and Paul Lacques (guitar).

Following the release of "Stolen Cadillac", Muffin will offer Lennon's legendary solo CD, "Reinventing the Wheel", which has been unavailable for several years. The CD features performances by Frank Zappa band member Mike Keneally, Candy Zappa, John Tabacco, and many others.

Nigey Lennon has several recording projects lined up for the near future, which will be announced on the Muffin website as soon as they are confirmed;

THE WRONG OBJECT - AFTER THE EXHIBITION

The Wrong Object has a new album out. It has been a while and it was worth the wait. If my notes are correct, this is album number six for TWO. Yes, I do count the excellent "Brewed In Belgium" by the Alex Maguire Sextet as an album by The Wrong Object, and I also added the beautiful "Live at Zappanale 2008" album that got released on the Fazzul Music label.
So this is album number six, entitled "After The Exhibition", and a lot has happened. For one thing, the quintet turned into a sextet, but even more important, there's four new members in the renewed band. Besides Michel Delville (guitar) and Laurent Delchambre (drums) the sextet is completed by Antoine Guenet (keyboard and occasional vocal; from Sh.tg.n !!), Marti Melia (sax), Francois Lourtie (sax) and Pierre Motet (bass). Furthermore, Susan Clynes added vocals on one track, and Benoît Moerlen added marimba and electric vibraphone to six of the tracks.

"After The Exhibition" is a beautiful album. One can tell that the various bandmembers know their classics. The Canterbury Scene, prog rock and Frank Zappa are never far away.

I like "After The Exhibition" a lot. The album does remain in line with the previous recordings, but it does make clear that The Wrong Object has taken another step forward.
The fact that all (or many) of the musicians also wrote some of the material does certainly add to the variety and the richness of the album.
Favourite tracks: 'Jungle Cow' (M.Delville), Yantra (L.Delchambre) and 'Glass Cubes' (A.Guenet).

Essential listening.

Here's a live snippet

Next week, June 29, The Wrong Object will be celebrating the new album in Liège (B).
At 'Le Fiacre'.

ANNE SOLDAAT, CORRIE VAN BINSBERGEN, HANS HASEBOS AND HERMINE DEURLO

Corrie van Binsbergen recently moved from Amsterdam (NL) to Ottersum (NL), near Nijmegen. Corrie contacted the local concert programmer and got carte blanche to do a couple of concerts.
One of these was a cross-over concert: singer-songwriter Anne Soldaat meets jazz improvisers Corrie van Binsbergen, Hans Hasebos and Hermine Deurlo.
Anne Soldaat plays the acoustic guitar and sings.
The jazz trio has Corrie van Binsbergen on electric guitar, Hans Hasebos on marimba and Hermine Deurlo on sax and chromatic harmonica. Corrie van Binsbergen and Hans Hasebos have been performing and recording together for years in Corrie en de Grote Brokken. Hermine Deurlo has been part of the Willem Breuker Collectief.

The concert took place on April 21, 2013.
It got broadcast on June 20, 2013, and can still be found through the Radio 6 website.

Beautiful.

UGLY RADIO REBELLION IN CONCERT AND ON VIDEO

Detroit-based Ugly Radio Rebellion performs the music of Frank Zappa. The band started out as Uncle Meat but morphed into Ugly Radio Rebellion a little while after that.
Guitar player Scott Schroen has been the common factor these last ten years. Various musicians have been in and out of the trio. Former Zappa bandmember Ike Willis has been a welcome guest and has participated in a couple of tours with Ugly Radio Rebellion.

Last year, Ugly Radio Rebellion celebrated their 10th birthday AND their 200th concert.
Congratulations are in place !!
Last week, I received three DVDR's from Ugly Radio Rebellion. As URR has never toured outside the USA, this was a nice opportunity to check them out.

"Live At The Backstage Lounge" shows the band in concert in Gainsville on 2012/01/26. You get 70 minutes of classic Frank Zappa songs, performed by Scott Schroen (guitar, vocals), Daniel Paschall (drums, vocals) and Andrew Walley (bass, vocals). Sound and image quality aren't top, and it's a one camera angle, but it does give an impression of what an Ugly Radio Rebellion concert is about.

1. five-five-five
2. camarillo brillo
3. muffin man
4. catholic girls
5. tell me you love me
6. joe's garage
7. crew slut
8. pygmy twylyte / echidna's arf
9. dirty love
10. bobby brown
11. i'm the slime
12. dinah-moe-hum
13. willie the pimp
14. cosmik debris
15. apostrophe

The "2012 - 10 years - 200 shows" DVD consists of two parts. The first one is a registration of the 2012/06/23 concert at The Wormhole in Savannah, GA, the second one has some songs of the 2012/06/24 concert at The Music Room in Atlanta, GA.

The overall sound and image quality on this disc is even worse than on the previous one. A pity.
On the other hand, the setlist is quite different from the Gainsville gig, and that's a plus.
As the vocals aren't the strongest point of URR, I can imaginge that they sound a lot more impressive with Ike Willis on stage.
Both of these DVDs should be nice for those who have seen URR in concert, like some sort of souvenir. I am not convinced that these recordings are good enough to survive as stand-alone items.

Now here's a nice idea. Take a coupe of musician that are experienced in performing the music of Frank Zappa and let them talk about Zappa's music. Preferably with their instrument at hand.
June 21, 2012, URR guitar player Scott Schroen and drummer Daniel Paschall hosted such an event.
On this 50-minute recording both musicians mainly talk about the different rhythms that are used by Zappa, demonstrating it to the audience by playing (parts of) songs.
I like the idea.

Next month, URR will be touring with Ike Willis.
This should be nice. So if you're in the neighbourhood, check them out !

SUN RA - CONTINUATION

Originally released in 1970 on Sun Ra's Saturn label, the "Continuation" album finally did get a CD release.
It's an impressive re-release as it contains a full CD of bonus material.
Not the easiest of Sun Ra albums, but still worth checking out. Nice package, excellent liner-notes, and music from another planet. What else does one need?

Here's the info from the Corbett vs. Dempsey website:

LEX BRONKOWITZ ORCHESTRA - PLAYS THE MUSIC OF FRANK ZAPPA / STRICTLY GRAVY

I first heard of Lex Bronkowitz at the Zappanale festival in 2002 when I got two of his early CDR demos, entitled "Get Dressed Or Arrested" and "I'm Only On Him For The Money". On these demos, Bronkowitz mastermind Alexander Debus displayed an original view in arranging the music of Frank Zappa. I was flabbergasted and each time that I saw Alexander at Zappanale I was hoping that he had recorded some more material.

Seeing the Lex Bronkowitz Orchestra in concert in Heerlen (NL) at the Mosae Zappa festival in June 2012 was an impressive continuation. It was a fantastic concert that also proved that Alexander's arrangements could be played by a band.

And now there's the "Lex Bronkowitz Orchestra Plays The Music Of Frank Zappa - Strictly Genteel" album.
In my humble opinion, there are two ways to perform the music of Frank Zappa. The first one is the endeavour to reproduce the music as FZ once intended it. This can be highly enjoyable and these concerts do not exclude a certain emotional factor. Bands like Dweezil Zappa Plays Zappa, Sheik Yerbouti, Bogus Pomp or Project/Object, possibly joined by former Zappa sidemen, fall into this category. I like them. I like them a lot. They keep Zappa's music alive.
The second way to perform the music of Frank Zappa is implemented by bands and / or artists that try to add a personal touch, a personal view to Zappa's music. I'm thinking of the beautiful arrangements and instrumentation of The Meridian Arts Ensemble, The Ambrosius Ensemble, the surprising arrangement of 'The Black Page' by The Rudy Schwartz Project, Stefano Bollani's jazz improvisations, the Doot! experiments, Dietmar Bonnen, or LeBocal, just to name a few.
The Lex Bronkowitz Orchestra belongs to the second group, and they just raised the bar a few inches...

This is top. The arrangements and transpositions are beautiful. The instrumentation is superb. I love the  sound of Lex's guitar, Peter Thomas' marimba, Katharinia' vocals, drums, bass, the horn section,... All of it.
And most of all, I like the puzzle. To give you an example: the first piece 'Catholic Fembot' is a medley of 'Don't You Ever Wash That Thing?', 'Fembot In A Wet T-Shirt', and 'Catholic Girls'. There's little hints and references everywhere. I love it.

Highly recommended.

MAD KAP - LOOK MA DUKE, NO HANDS

MARCO MINNEMANN - SYMBOLIC FOX

I brought Marco Minnemann's "Symbolic Fox" home after the Joe Satriani concert last week. It's his latest solo album (in quite a series), released in October 2012.
Besides playing and recording with a bunch of different artists and participating in various projects, Marco also finds the time to write and record solo material.

"Symbolic Fox" is a fine album. There's a large variety to be found in the various songs. It goes from 80's pop to zappa-esque exercises.
Nice. Very nice.
In a beautiful package. Love the artwork.

Marco Minnemann does all the instruments and vocals on "Symbolic Fox", with the exception of two (fabulous !!) guitar solos by Guthrie Govan.

Uncompromising.
Available at concerts, or at CDBaby.

Here's an introduction:

Dialeto is a progressive rock band from São Paulo, Brazil. The trio is led by guitarist and composer Nelson Coelho and also features Jorge Pescara on touchguitars and Miguel Angel on drums.

"The Last Tribe" is the band's third studio album and it's their international debut. The disc sounds pretty impressive. "The Last Tribe" presents instrumental, lyrical, guitar-oriented progressive rock.

I like it. Great melodies, a slow but powerful beat,.. An excellent discovery.

The album got released on Leonardo Pavkovik's Moonjune Records. Check it out.

ADDITIONS TO THE DOCTOR NERVE DISCOGRAPHY

I've added the last batch of data for the Doctor Nerve discography in the United Mutations Archives.
Listening to these album while typing, copying and pasting. Fun.
This is great stuff. Everyone should check this out.

"Out To Bomb Fresh Kings" got released as a vinyl album in 1984 on Punos Records. The German No Man's Land label picked it up and released it in Europe in 1985. Also on vinyl. With a smashing cover !

"Armed Observation" got released in 1987 on the Cuneiform label. On vinyl.
In 1992, Cuneiform released the first two Doctor Nerve albums on one CD.
Here's the cover:
  • doctor nerve: armed observation / out to bomb fresh kings
(1992, cd, usa, cuneiform rune 38x)

"Did Sprinting Die?" got released in 1990 on both the Wayside and the Cuneiform label. Both had a different cover. The album features a couple of computer generated pieces !! Excellent stuff.

Kicking off with 'Splinter', "Beta 14 OK" is another must-hear album.
Beta waves are brainwaves with a frequency of 14 beats per second.
Frequency? Freakency? Essential listening. Your brain will love it. And now you know why.

DOCTOR NERVE - DID SPRINTING DIE?

Doctor Nerve's third album, "Did Sprinting Die?" got released on the Cuneiform label in 1990.
Most of the tracks were recorded live at 'The Knitting Factory' in New York City in 1989, but the album also presents a number of computer generated pieces. Nice. Very nice.
The computer generated pieces go together very well with the live tracks.
"Did Sprinting Die?" offers eleven short but very powerful pieces.
If you're into experimental / avant-garde / zappa, you should definitely check this out.
It's hard to believe that this album got recorded almost fifteen years ago. This is as contemporary as it gets.

Data and picture have been added to the United Mutations Archives.
