LIGRO - DICTIONARY 2

Everybody should know by now that Moonjune Records has an ear for talent.
Their latest discovery is a band called Ligro, a jazz-rock trio from Jakarta, Indonesia.

Ligro is Agam Hamzah (guitar), Adi Darmawan (bass guitar) and Gusti Hendy (drums). Read backwards, Ligro becomes "Orgil', which means 'crazy people' in the Bahasa language. It should give you an idea of the music that they produce.
According to their website, this jazz-rock powertrio released their first album in 2008, entitled "Dictionary 1". The sequel is now getting an international release on the MoonJune label: "Dictionary 2".

"Dictionary 2" presents eight powerful compositions. The record shows that all three musicians have great chops and that the band is very tight when it needs to be. The Ligro trio takes jazz-rock to another level. It's fast and accurate. Especially Gusi Hendy's drumming is all over the place.
With composition titles like 'Stravinsky', 'Etude Indienne' and 'Miles Away' the band shows that they are not afraid to show their influences.
High-energy fusion. I love it.

Ligro's "Dictionary 2" should be on every fusion-fan's want-list.
Highly recommended. Check it out.

THE GRANDE MOTHERS OF INVENTION - HAPPY MOTHERS DAY

The Grande Mothers released another album !!
It's no download or CDR, but a real, factory-pressed & good looking CD (with a fabulous cover by Don Preston).

"Happy Mothers Day" as the album is called, got recorded in concert earlier this year. Napoleon Murphy Brock, Don Preston, Christopher Garcia, Gahaes The Great (Robbie Mangano) and Anon E.Mous (Walt Fowler) did a great job.

An impressive setlist and an inspired performance. What else does one need?

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART AND THE MAGIC BAND - SON OF DUST SUCKER

"Son Of Dust Sucker" is a recent release by the U.K. Ozit / Dandelion record label.
It's another version of the Bat Chain Puller album and comes from Don's original tape.
It got released a couple of months ago.

http://www.spaceritual.net/tractor/cb-sonofdustsucker.htm
New updated version of the “Dust Sucker” album, which will be deleted after the current pressing has sold through. Captain Beefheart’s original tapes of the Bat Chain Puller album, sent to his friend Roger Eagle in the UK to make sure they got released in the UK, as in the USA the tapes were tied up in a dispute between Frank Zappa and his manager Herb Cohen. "Son of Dust Sucker" combines those original tapes with the surprise nine extra live bonus tracks from the Captain’s illustrious career.

SUN RA ARKESTRA IN CONCERT IN NYC ON 2012 12 13

The Sun Ra Arkestra under the direction of Marshall Allen travels onward toward the conclusion of its 2012 World Tour on Thursday, December 13, 2012 with a return visit to Nublu, 62 Avenue C between 4th and 5th Streets in New York City. Sets will be at 10:30 pm and midnight.

This appearance of the Sun Ra Arkestra is part of the Nublu Jazz Festival New York City. The Nublu show continues a legacy of New York City East Village club Arkestra manifestations that started with legendary events at the Five Spot and Slugs many decades ago.

Here's a 2 1/2 minute video segment of the June 7, 2012 Arkestra visitation to Nublu:

THE RESIDENTS - BAD DAY ON THE MIDWAY

  • the residents: bad day on the midway
(2012, book + cd, usa, the cryptic corp.)

"Bad Day on the Midway" initially got released in 1995. It was a CD-ROM game designed and scored by The Residents and a number of graphic artists, including Jim Ludtke.
One year later, The Residents released the soundtrack on CD as "Have A Bad Day".

And now there's the book version of the CD-ROM.
Haven't read it yet, but the CD has already been dancing in my CD player.
Nice.

RENE VAN BARNEVELD ON VRIJE GELUIDEN TV SHOW

Next Sunday morning, René van Barneveld will be performing at the Vrije Geluiden TV show.
National Dutch TV station NED 1, that is.

René van Barneveld will be performing at the Amsterdam Electric Guitar Heaven festival that kicks off on December 7. René played the guitar in Urban Dance Squad and in Sjako (who recorded two Zappa compositions !).

http://www.amsterdamelectric.com/nl

Former Zappa, Bowie and King Crimson guitarist Adrian Belew will also perform at this festival, as will Anton Goudsmit, Corrie van Binsbergen, Pieter Tiehuis, Andy Summers, and DeWolff's Pablo van de Poel...

GLENN HUGHES & JOE LYNN TURNER - HTP 2

"HTP 2" or "Huges Turner Project 2" is a typical AOR (Album Orientated Rock) album from almost ten years ago. It features Glenn Hughes and Joe Lynn Turner on lead vocals.
Special guest on track three, 'Losing My Head', is Steve Vai. It has a bit of an oriental flavour.
Data has been added to the United Mutations Archives.

UK - REUNION TOUR - HIGHLINE BALLROOM NYC USA 2011-04-11

April 2011, John Wetton and Eddie Jobson reformed U.K. to do a couple of concerts in Tokyo, San Francisco, New York City and Boston. The shows featured Alex Machacek on guitar and Marco Minnemann on drums.
This was followed by a world tour in 2012.
These concerts did not go unnoticed to bootleggers. A couple of bootlegs with recordings of these shows have already been spotted.
Here's a picture of the bootleg that has the NYC 2011-04-11 concert.
Said to be manufactured in Japan...

DOUBT - MERCY, PITY, PEACE & LOVE

douBt is back.
Alex Maguire, Michel Delville and Tony Bianco have recorded a second album.
On "Mercy, Pity, Peace & Love", the trio shows that progressive rock is more alive then ever. The listener is treated to 13 beautiful tracks on which Alex Maguire's keyboard and Michel Delville's guitar scream for your attention as they take you for a a wild ride. Guided by Tony Bianco's expressive drumming, the trio shows some great interplay.

"Mercy, Pity, Peace & Love" is an excellent album. (The album title was taken from William Blake's 'Songs Of Innocence And Experience' poem.)
The compositions are great. There's some great soloing going on, and the three of them sound as one.
My favorite piece is 'Jalal', although the trio's rendition of Jimi Hendrix' 'Purple Haze' should be mentioned as well.

Fans of jazz-rock or progressive rock should not hesitate.
This is essential listening!

ROYAL ACADEMY OF MUSIC MANSON ENSEMBLE - ZAPPA

The Manson Ensemble took part in the "Frank Zappa at the Roundhouse" festival that was held in London, UK from November 5 - 7, 2010.
The Ensemble also scheduled a performance of some Zappa compositions on November 13, 2010.

Conducted by Frank Ollu, who performed with the Ensemble Modern on the original Yellow Shark recording, the Manson Ensemble presented a selection of instrumental Zappa classics alongside new transcriptions by RAM Head of Composition, Philip Cashian, and current composition students.

Shortly after the concerts, the ensemble recorded this album. The result is stunning. A fine recording of a superb performance.

Essential listening for every Zappa fan.

A SHORT CHAT WITH WOLFRAM KLUG

Wolfram Klug went to L.A. a little while ago to record with Ed Mann, Ike Willis, Tommy Mars and Arthur Barrow.
He posted a couple of pictures on his blog
goforlife.wolframklug.com

Here's a short chat with Wolfram.

UniMuta : Hello Wolfram, can you tell us a bit about yourself? You're a musician, composer, ...?

Wolfram Klug : I am a musician. Bass Guitar mostly. Done file music (www.myspace.com/flabsound for example). Played in all sorts of bands in Germany and Switzerland where I live now.

UniMuta : On your blog you write that it is hard to find musicians in Europe to work with you. Can you tell us a bit more? What do you expect from the musicians that you work with?

Wolfram Klug : European musicians are worried about their reputation. So every project is carefully checked: what is it? Who is it? Do I risk anything? And does he pay me enough.
As I don’t have a huge track record people are quite resisitant to try out new things with me.

UniMuta : It's fascinating that you went to L.A. to record with musicians that were in Zappa's band. How did they relate to your music?

Wolfram Klug : They did like the music, however my approach while recording was new to them as I asked them to try this and that. Things which might not make sense to them musically in that moment but they trusted me that I will do the right thing in the editing and mixing process.
In any case they ARE open minded and experimental. I will have a video soon and you will see the fun we had.

UniMuta : Your new album will be called "Go For Live". Did you have all the basic tracks recorded before you left for L.A.? Can you explain how you work? Do you have all the parts on the computer and do you ask the
participating musicians to re-record these parts?

Wolfram Klug : All of the above and more. Each track was different. I had 50% of the tracks prepared in Logic Studio.
Some parts where written and I asked mostly Tommy to rerecord.
Words for Vocals where written by me and basic melodies. Ike and Tommy then added their feel.
One song was partially co-composed by T and I.

UniMuta : I was happy to read that the recording went fine. What's the next step for the album?

Wolfram Klug : A lot of editing now. Then mixing, mastering and CD promotion.
We also think of a tour in Europe next summer

UniMuta : Do you have some sort of schedule? When do you want the album to be released? Will it be a private release or do you have a label? I'm assuming and hoping that the album will be released in some sort of physical format like vinyl or CD, or will it be download only?

Wolfram Klug : To be decided. Best case all of the above. Spring 2013

UniMuta : I'm very curious to hear the result ! Keep us posted on your progress !

LIVING BY LANTERNS

Living By Lanterns is a band that consists of musicians from New York and Chicago.

They explore music, inspired by a previously unknown recording of Sun Ra.
The band features drummer Mike Reed and vibraphonist Jason Adasiewicz.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - FESTIVAL VOOR NIEUWE MUZIEK - HAPPY NEW EARS

In 2005, the Happy New Ears festival celebrated its 10th anniversary. For this occasion, the organisation joined forces with Gonzo Circus magazine and released a sampler for the upcoming edition, introducing the participating artists.
Track 4 is Peter Vermeersch's 'Heliogabal', performed by Flat Earth Society.

MIKE MILLER QUINTET - WORLD GOES ROUND

Guitar player Mike Miller's musical career is quite impressive. He recorded with The Yellowjackets, collaborated with Alphonso Johnson and was a part of Chick Corea's Elektric Band.
Next to these working with all these jazz cats, Mike also has numerous links to the Zappa universe. He recorded with The Fowler Brothers, he toured and recorded with The Grandmothers in the early eighties, and he was part of The Band From Utopia to name just a few.
Earlier this month, I saw him in concert with the Grande Mothers, performing the music of FZ together with Napoleon Murphy Brock, Don Preston, Dave Johnson and Chris Garcia.
It was at this very concert that I picked up a copy of "World Goes Round", one of his two solo albums.(The other one's called "Save The Moon".)

"World Goes Round" is a beautiful, jazzy album. The compositions are great, mixing rock, jazz and fusion, and the playing is superb.
The quintet features Mike Miller on guitar, Walt Fowler on trumpet, Albert Wing on tenor sax, Chad Wackerman on drums, and Jimmy Johnson on bass.

A must-have album.
Available from CDBaby.

Here's the Mike Miller Quintet in concert:

And here's Mike with Jeff Severson, performing Steely Dan's 'Josie'.

DWEEZIL ZAPPA - F.O.H. III - OUT OF OBSCURITY

I brought this one home after the Dweezil Zappa Plays Zappa concert in Brussels. It's the third release in Dweezil's "Front Of House" mixes of recent ZpZ tours.
This particular disc focusses on the February 2012 concerts, charactarized by the presence of Scott Thunes on bass. Scott played in Frank Zappa's band from 1982 until the very end in 1988. Later, he toured and recorded with Dweezil & Ahmet Zappa, and with Steve Vai. When the Zappa Plays Zappa band found themselves without a bass player earlier this year, Scott filled the void.

"Out Of Obscurity" is an excellent album. It presents an excellent choice of song from the Frank Zappa songbook. The band is in great shape, and Dweezil's guitar playing is really good.

Mandatory food for Zappa freaks.

PANZERPAPPA UPDATE

Thanks to Danny Mathys, I was able to add the Panzerpappa discography to the United Mutations Archives.
The first two albums were privately released CDRs.
"Farlig Vandring" was the band's first 'real' album.
"Astromalist" is the brand-new one.

SPACE ORPHANS IN CONCERT IN NEW HAVEN 2012 12 16

Red Blade and Space Orphans will be doing a concert at the 'Elm Bar' in New Haven, CT, on 2012 12 16.

WHAT A WEEKEND...

My previous weekend was a one-of-a-kind.

Friday, we went to see Steve Vai in concert in Tilburg at the 013 concert hall. Sunday was Grande Mothers day at the Paradox music club in Tilburg, and Monday evening we enjoyed Dweezil Zappa Plays Zappa in Brussels.
Fun was had by all. Especially by me.

Dweezil ZpZ show was good. We had nice seats (which is important) and the band played an impressive set from the Zappa catalogue. It was a bit too clean, maybe. I would have liked Dweezil to tell us some stories about the music, the compositions or whatever. Instead we got a silent tune-up break every time he switched guitars. It ruins the atmosphere when you have these silent moments. Too bad, 'cause the boys and girls can really play and Dweezil did a great job playing the lead guitar.
Goosebumps when Scheila recited "Music Is The Best !!
The annoying part happened after the show when I found out that they had run out of the Zappa albums that I wanted to bring home. So now I still don't have the first volume of Road Tapes...
And I know it's not the guy at the merch booth's fault, but answering me like "We ran out of these a couple of days ago but they should be back in tomorrow in Utrecht" did not help... I wasn't going to Utrecht. I came to Brussels...

The Grande Mothers performed at the Paradox. We were lucky to catch the last chairs and found ourselves sitting down about five feet from the stage. Great !! The band featured former Mothers Napoleon Murphy Brock and Don Preston, plus Mike Miller, Chris Garcia and Dave Johnson. These guys had fun, and they were able to pass their energy on to the public.
Very good.
Goosebumps all over the place.

Steve Vai still has it. Not only did he show up at the Sounds Record Store in the city of Tilburg in the afternoon, he brought a f*$£%/ three-hour show...
We were standing on the balkony, so maybe the sound wasn't perfect, but the show was and we could enjoy every second of it.
This was great. Steve mixed his beautiful ballads with material from his most recent album, and he gave all of his bandmembers a bit of room to showcase their music as well.
Tears in my eyes...

ZAUSS - NEULICH NEBEN DER GRENZE

July 2006, guitar player Francesco Zago and composer and saxophone player Markus Stauss got invited to Fabio Ceriani's place in Tradate, Italy. At the house, Francesco and Markus recorded a number of improvisations. Zauss (ZAgo & StaUSS) was born. "Neulich Neben Der Grenze" (Close To The Frontier) presents this music in the same order as it was recorded.

If I'm not mistaken, "Neulich Neben Der Grenze" was the first Zauss album. It got recorded in Tradate, which can be found near a village called Varese and is, indeed, close to the border with Switzerland. On the other hand, the album title fits the music as well. This is music for the adventurous listener. It's experimental, improvised music.

Markus Stauss' saxophone takes a journey in the soundscapes that are created by Francesco Zago's guitar.
This is the kind of music that asks for your complete attention.

Recommended listening.

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART - MERSEYTROUT

I'm still going through the things that I bought at Zappanale. Here's one of those Ozit / Dandelion releases.
I had already added the picture to the Archives, but now the line-up, links & tracklist have been added as well.

Is it good? It is essential?

Well, for most Beefheart fans, the man's discography only had few additions after "Ice Cream For Crow".
You need the "Grow Fins" box;  "I'm Going To Do What I Wanno Do" (Rhino, 2000); and the ZFT's "Bat Chain Puller" is essential, but that's about it.
Sure, a number of nice live recordings have been released as well and a couple of them are really nice, but the material that Ozit / Dandelion has been releasing is for die-hards only.

THE RESIDENTS - DEMONIC !

  • the residents: demonic ! - the residents live in oslo
        (2012, 2cd, usa, rz1207)

Initially, "Demonic" got released as luxurious 2 CD/ DVD set. And I'm pretty convinced that it's still available.
So maybe The Residents thought that this limited deluxe version would sell out soon as they released a regular 2 CD set more recently.
A great show, taken from the 2003 tour, live in Oslo.

It includes the beautiful and almost hypnotic 'Wonderful'.
Featuring Nolan Cook on the guitar !!

STEVE VAI

We saw Steve Vai in concert in Tilburg last Friday.
The show lasted three hours and we enjoyed every minute of it.

Here's two of my favorite SVYM's (Steve Vai Youtube Movies) to start the day.
The first one has Steve performing with the Metropole Orkest.
From an official release. Recorded in Groningen. Saw the same show live a little while later in Amsterdam.
Blew me away.

And here's Steve as special guest at the Zappa plays Zappa show in 2006. Also from an official release.
I was at a couple of these shows. Amsterdam, Brussels & Düsseldorf.
Goosebumps each and every time...

ANOTHER NEW ZAPPA RELEASE?

Over at Zappateers, there's a discussion going about a new possible Zappa release: "Finer Things".
Scheduled for release in December.

Gail mentioned it in her latest newsletter:

November/December:
You know You Can't Do That Onstage Anymore, volumes of times but what you can do at your next picnic with your friendly Playground Psychotics - always soooo Ahead Of Their Time that is almost annoying - is treat yourself to a large orchestral snack of The Yellow Shark. Whenever the question is Have I Offended Someone? you won't need an ocean of Läther to find that Mystery Disc. You will know the answer in all the Lost Episodes and in each, every and all the Finer Moments.

COPERNICUS - DEEPER

Copernicus is Joseph Smalkowski's alter ego. In the liner notes of "Deeper", Joseph Smalkoswski says: "Copernicus is not about music; he is about philosophy".

Joseph Smalkowski knows best, but I tend to disagree.
True, Copernicus tries to understand and to explain the cosmos, or the illusion of the macrocosmos as he calls it. His stories and ideas are fascinating to say the least. For Copernicus, only the atom exists.
What Joseph Smalkoswki forgets to mention is the music. The musical accompaniment is both supportive and reinforcing to Copernicus' stories.

"Deeper" is Copernicus' third album. Initially, it got released in 1987. It follows "Nothing Exists" and "Victim Of The Sky". Moonjune has now re-released this album in their reissue program.
It's a fine album, but if you'd like to give Copernicus a try, you might best do it in chronological order.

MAHOGANY FROG - SENNA

Winnipeg-based Mahogany Frog has released their sixth album. It's out on the Moonjune Records label. Melomaniacs know that every Moonjune release is worth investigating. Therefore, a large dose of enthusiasm and curiosity were present when I gave this album its first spin yesterday.

Two days and four listening sessions later, I am happy to say that "Senna" is an excellent album. Mahogany Frog's instrumental, fuzzy and psychedelic jazz-rock has taken hold of me.
I don't know whether it's the album title, or the picture of the motor on the album cover, but "Senna" sounds like an hypnotic version of a road movie.
"Senna" presents a lot of catchy melodies, wrapped in synthesizer soundscapes and distorted guitar lines. I love it.

Highly recommended !!
